Critical evaluation of sampling and gas chromatographic analysis of halocarbons and other organic air pollutants

Problems connected with the analysis of ultra-trace amounts of halocarbons in air are discussed in terms of trapping procedures, interferences and chromatographic columns. A suitable column for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of C1-C2 halocarbons is described, and examples of applications are given. High-efficiency micropacked columns have been used for the analysis of hydrocarbons in the open atmosphere.

Environmental applications of mass spectrometry

The 1976 publications reporting organic and spark source mass spectrometric studies on environmental samples were compiled. Emphasis was placed on pollutants identified rather than methods and techniques used, and reports that did not incorporate data obtained by a technique's application were not included. The 349 reports cited vary from those reporting hundreds of identified pollutants to those describing the analysis of only one sample containing one or a few pollutants. The following sample types were not considered to be environment samples: forensic samples, synthetic or 'standards' samples, and samples analyzed for drug residues.

Environmental trace analysis of organics in water by glass capillary column chromatography and ancillary techniques. Products of ozonolysis

A method employing a polymeric sorbent has been used for analysis of volatile organic components in water. Trace level organics are sparged from water with nitrogen gas and are concentrated on Tenax GC prior to analysis with either flame ionization gas chromatography or gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Glass capillary columns were used to obtain maximum resolution of chromatographic peaks. Specifically, the method has been applied to a qualitative and quantitative study of the products which result from ozonization of secondary treated domestic wastewater. The principal volatile products of ozonolysis are n-hexanal, n-heptanal, n-octanal and n-nonanal. Representative samples contained 0.7 ppb** of n-heptanal and less than 1 ppb of any of the volatile compounds.
