Abstract
An accurate, fast, easily applicable, and cost-effective method for the determination of nitrate and nitrite was developed. This method was much more reliable than the cadmium column reduction method, which is a tedious and time-consuming procedure and not easily applicable. The principle of the method was reduction of nitrate to nitrite with cadmium acetate solution and zinc powder and then treatment with Griess reagent. Recovery of the method changed from 92.9 to 102.8%, and detection limit was found as 31.4 mg/kg. Coefficient of variation was 3.16% for intraday precision. Nitrate and nitrite contents of 10 types of leafy vegetables native to the Aegean region of Turkey were determined. Wild radish, chicory, fennel, blessed thistle, blue mallow, and chard were analyzed for the first time. Nitrate contents were found between 354.8 mg/kg for iceberg lettuce and 4653 mg/kg for wild radish. Tested vegetables contained <26.33 mg/kg nitrite.

Spectrophotometric determination of nitrite based on its catalytic effect on the reaction of nuclear fast red and potassium bromate. JOURNAL OF THE SERBIAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY 2009. Abstract
A highly selective and sensitive catalytic spectrophotometric method was developed for the determination of nitrite in water samples. The method is based on its catalytic effect on the nuclear fast red-potassium bromate redox reaction in acidic medium. The reaction was followed spectrophotometrically by measuring the change in the absorbance at 518 nm of nuclear fast red 5 min after initiation of the reaction. In this study, the experimental parameters were optimized and the effects of other cations and anions on the determination of nitrite were examined. The calibration graph was linear in the range 2.0-45 ?g mL-1 of nitrite. The relative standard deviations for the determination of 15 and 30 ?g mL-1 of nitrite were 3.1 and 1.75 %, respectively (n = 8). The detection limit calculated from three times the standard deviation of the blank 3Sb was 0.7 ?g mL-1. The method was successfully applied to the determination of nitrite in spiked tap, natural and wastewater samples.

Abstract
A rapid, simple, and most economical spectrophotometric method was proposed for the determination of nitrite in various water samples, soil samples, and roots of leguminous plants. The method is based on decolorizing effect of nitrite on complex formed between hydrogen peroxide and vanadate in acidic medium. The decolorization of that complex by nitrite was exploited to monitor the reaction spectrophotometrically at 470 nm. The method was optimized for effect of concentrations of ammonium metavanadate, hydrogen peroxide, various acids, concentrations of sulphuric acid, order of reagents addition and color stability. The color of the complex was found to be stable for about 2 days, and the stability constant of the complex was also calculated by modified Job's method. The linearity range of the calibration graph was over 6.67-66.7 microg ml(-1) of nitrite with molar absorptivity, 0.276 x 10(3) mol(-1) l cm(-1) and Sandell's sensitivity, 0.1667 microg cm(-2). The method was applied successfully for the determination of nitrite in soil samples, various wastewater samples and roots of leguminous plants.

Abstract
A simple flow injection spectrophotometric method for the determination of nitrite is described. Nitrite injected into the flow system reacts with thiourea in acidic medium and the generated thiocyanate ion reacts with Fe(III) in the reagent solution to produce a highly colored product. The influences of chemical and physical parameters including reagent concentrations, sample volume injected, flow rates of the carrier and reagent solutions, reaction coil length and reaction temperature, were studied and optimum values of these parameters were established. Under the optimum conditions, the calibration curve for nitrite was linear over the concentration range 0.36 - 90 microg ml(-1) without preconcentration and over the range 3.8 - 500 ng ml(-1) with a simple online preconcentration step using an anion exchange column. The corresponding detection limits were 0.36 micro ml(-1) and 3.8 ng ml(-1), respectively. Up to 25 samples can be analyzed per hour, with an average relative standard deviation of < or = 1.2%. Interferences by various foreign ions were studied and the method was applied to the determination of nitrite in water and spiked water samples.
