Abstract
A general and simple strategy for the site-selective thiolation of various pharmaceutically relevant electron-rich heteroarenes with thiols is reported. This mild and reliable photocatalytic protocol enables C-S coupling at the most electron-rich position of the (multi)halogenated substrates, complementing established methodologies. Experimental and computational studies suggest a radical chain mechanism with the key step being a homolytic aromatic substitution of the heteroaryl halide by an electrophilic thiyl radical, highlighting an underdeveloped reactivity mode.

Abstract
9-Substituted 2-chloro-6-sulfonylpurines provide 6-azido-2-sulfonylpurine derivatives with 61-83% yields when treated with sodium azide. Under optimized reaction conditions, the title compounds are obtained in a one-pot process, which involves a sequential treatment of 2,6-dichloropurines with a selected sodium sulfinate and sodium azide. Such a sulfonyl group dance (functional group swap) results from a cascade of SNAr reactions, which are facilitated by azidoazomethine-tetrazole (azide-tetrazole) tautomeric equilibrium. The formation of Meisenheimer-type intermediates as tetrazolopurine tautomers was supported by various spectroscopic methods, including 15N NMR.

Abstract
Herein, a visible-light photochemical approach for practical helicene functionalization at very mild reaction conditions is described. The photochemical reactions allow for the regiospecific and innate late-stage functionalization of helicenes and are easily executed either through the activation of C(sp2 )-Br bonds in helicenes using K2 CO3 as inorganic base or direct C(sp2 )-H helicene bond functionalization under oxidative photoredox reaction conditions. Overall, using these transformations six different functional groups are introduced to the helicene scaffold through C-C and four different C-heteroatom bond-forming reactions.

Abstract
Bis-enolates with extended π-conjugation, prepared by alkali metal-mediated reduction of several aromatic and unsaturated diesters, can be efficiently and regioselectively alkylated with very hindered C-electrophiles, such as neopentyl, secondary and tertiary alkyl halides, and tosylates. A one-step synthesis of 4-alkyl phthalates was derived from the reductive alkylation of a phthalate diester with hindered halides followed by rearomatization with oxygen. Additionally, synthetic protocols have been developed to efficiently prepare complex fused- or spiro-bicycles from diisopropyl phthalate in just one or two steps.

Abstract
Upon UVA irradiation, aryl halides can undergo dehalogenation in the presence of bases and methanol as a hydrogen donor. This catalyst-free photochemical dehalogenation is furnished through a facile radical chain reaction under mild conditions. The chain reaction follows UVA irradiation of the reaction mixture in a transition-metal-free environment. Mechanistic studies support a chain mechanism in which initiation involves absorption by a methoxide-bromoarene complex facilitated by halogen-bonding interactions. The methoxide-bromine interaction leads to a weakened Br-C bond that is prone to facile cleavage during the initiation and propagation steps.

Abstract
Recent developments in experimental and computational chemistry have identified a rapidly growing class of nucleophilic aromatic substitutions that proceed by concerted (cSN Ar) rather than classical, two-step, SN Ar mechanisms. Whereas traditional SN Ar reactions require substantial activation of the aromatic ring by electron-withdrawing substituents, such activating groups are not mandatory in the concerted pathways.

Abstract
Transition-metal-catalyzed cross-couplings between aromatic electrophiles and nucleophiles have revolutionized modern chemical syntheses. Nevertheless, transition-metal-free approaches are preferable, considering the various issues caused by metal catalysts. This Minireview summarizes the recent progress in the light-enabled transition-metal-free formation of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds in aromatics, which opens a new avenue in aromatic reactions. From the mechanistic perspective, it classifies different reaction types of aryl electrophiles in an excited state with various nucleophiles. We believe this will provide more rationales for metal-free aromatic substitutions and cross-couplings with light, and guide the development of novel transformations of aromatic compounds facilitated by light.

Abstract
Stereogenic main group elements are clearly generating interest in the enantioselective catalysis field. Surprisingly, while chiral organoboron reagents are very useful in stereoselective transformations, few scaffolds stereogenic at boron and configurationally stable have been reported to date. Herein, we describe an original library of chiral NHC-boranes, stereogenic at the boron atom, that has been prepared in only a few steps and in good yields (up to 93%). Key steps involve a chlorination/arylation sequence in the presence of simple Grignard reagents from bicyclic NHC-boranes. The high and unprecedented diastereoselectivity observed during the second step (up to 99 : 1 dr) has been rationalized through a plausible SRN1 mechanism thanks to EPR observations and DFT calculations.

Abstract
The fluoroalkylation of various nucleophilic reagents with (phenylsulfonyl)difluoromethyl (PhSO2CF2)-substituted phenanthridines was achieved to give fluorinated phenanthridine derivatives, which enables the construction of both carbon-heteroatom and carbon-carbon bonds via the substitution of the phenylsulfonyl group. Mechanistic studies indicated that these reactions proceed through a unimolecular radical nucleophilic substitution (SRN1) mechanism. It is worthwhile noting that in the cases of O-nucleophiles ( t-BuO- and PhO-), the addition of t-BuOK/PhCHO could significantly promote the reactions, due to the in situ formation of a highly reactive electron donor species through the interaction of t-BuOK, PhCHO, and the solvent DMF, which can effectively initiate the single electron transfer process.

Abstract
Catalytic chemistry that involves the activation and transformation of main group substrates is relatively undeveloped and current examples are generally mediated by expensive transition metal species. Herein, we describe the use of inexpensive and readily available tBuOK as a catalyst for P-P and P-E (E = O, S, or N) bond formation. Catalytic quantities of tBuOK in the presence of imine, azobenzene hydrogen acceptors, or a stoichiometric amount of tBuOK with hydrazobenzene, allow efficient homodehydrocoupling of phosphines under mild conditions (e.g. 25 °C and < 5 min). Further studies demonstrate that the hydrogen acceptors play an intimate mechanistic role. We also show that our tBuOK catalysed methodology is general for the heterodehydrocoupling of phosphines with alcohols, thiols and amines to generate a range of potentially useful products containing P-O, P-S, or P-N bonds.

Abstract
Transition-metal-catalyzed cross-couplings to construct C-C, C-O, and C-N bonds have revolutionized chemical science. Despite great achievements, these metal catalysts also raise certain issues including their high cost, requirement of specialized ligands, sensitivity to air and moisture, and so-called "transition-metal-residue issue". Complementary strategy, which does not rely on the well-established oxidative addition, transmetalation, and reductive elimination mechanistic paradigm, would potentially eliminate all of these metal-related issues. Herein, we show that aryl triflates can be coupled with potassium aryl trifluoroborates, aliphatic alcohols, and nitriles without the assistance of metal catalysts empowered by photoenergy. Control experiments reveal that among all common aryl electrophiles only aryl triflates are competent in these couplings whereas aryl iodides and bromides cannot serve as the coupling partners. DFT calculation reveals that once converted to the aryl radical cation, aryl triflate would be more favorable to ipso substitution. Fluorescence spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry investigations suggest that the interaction between excited acetone and aryl triflate is essential to these couplings. The results in this report are anticipated to provide new opportunities to perform cross-couplings.

Abstract
Herein, we report a protocol for direct visible-light-mediated Minisci C-H alkylation of heteroarenes with unactivated alkyl halides using molecular oxygen as an oxidant at room temperature. This mild protocol is compatible with a wide array of sensitive functional groups and has a broad substrate scope. Notably, functionalization of (iso)quinolines, pyridines, phenanthrolines, quinazoline, and other heterocyclic compounds with unactivated primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl halides proceeds smoothly under the standard conditions. The robustness of this protocol is further demonstrated by the late-stage functionalization of complex nitrogen-containing natural products and drugs.

Abstract
Bimolecular nucleophilic substitution (SN2) plays a central role in organic chemistry. In the conventionally accepted mechanism, the nucleophile displaces a carbon-bound leaving group X, often a halogen, by attacking the carbon face opposite the C–X bond. A less common variant, the halogenophilic SN2X reaction, involves initial nucleophilic attack of the X group from the front and as such is less sensitive to backside steric hindrance. Herein, we report an enantioconvergent substitution reaction of activated tertiary bromides by thiocarboxylates or azides that, on the basis of experimental and computational mechanistic studies, appears to proceed via the unusual SN2X pathway. The proposed electrophilic intermediates, benzoylsulfenyl bromide and bromine azide, were independently synthesized and shown to be effective.

Abstract
Enantioselective total syntheses of the anticancer isocarbostyril alkaloids (+)-7-deoxypancratistatin, (+)-pancratistatin, (+)-lycoricidine, and (+)-narciclasine are described. Our strategy for accessing this unique class of natural products is based on the development of a Ni-catalyzed dearomative trans-1,2-carboamination of benzene. The effectiveness of this dearomatization approach is notable, as only two additional olefin functionalizations are needed to construct the fully decorated aminocyclitol cores of these alkaloids. Installation of the lactam ring has been achieved through several pathways and a direct interconversion between natural products was established via a late-stage C-7 cupration. Using this synthetic blueprint, we were able to produce natural products on a gram scale and provide tailored analogs with improved activity, solubility, and metabolic stability.

Abstract
A novel approach for the synthesis of tetracyclic indoles and 7-azaindoles is reported. The strategy involves four steps, with a fast rt intramolecular α-arylation of ketones as key step. The reaction was inspected synthetically to achieve the synthesis of 11 novel tetracyclic structures with moderate to very good yields (39-85%). Theoretical combined with experimental studies led us to propose a probable polar mechanism (concerted SNAr).

Abstract
A visible-light-initiated α-perfluoroalkyl-β-heteroarylation of various alkenes with perfluoroalkyl iodides and quinoxalin-2(1 H)-ones is presented. This three-component radical cascade reaction allows an efficient synthesis of a range of perfluoroalkyl containing quinoxalin-2(1 H)-one derivatives in moderate to excellent yields under mild conditions. Reactions proceed via acidic aminyl radicals that are readily deprotonated to give the corresponding radical anions able to sustain the radical chain as single electron transfer reducing reagents. Hence, the overall cascade classifies as an electron-catalyzed process.

Abstract
The rich legacy of arenediazonium salts in the synthesis of unsymmetrical biaryls, built around the seminal works of Pschorr, Gomberg and Bachmann more than a century ago, continues to make important contributions at various evolutionary stages of modern biaryl synthesis. Based on in-depth mechanistic analysis and design of novel pathways and reaction conditions, the scope of biaryl synthesis with arenediazonium salts has enormously expanded in recent years through applications of transition metal/photoredox-catalysed cross-coupling, thermal/photosensitized radical chain CH-arylation of (hetero)arenes and arylative radical annulation reactions with alkynes. These recent developments have provided facile synthetic access to a wide variety of unsymmetrical biaryls of pharmaceutical, agrochemical and optoelectronic importance with green scale-up options and created opportunities for late-stage modification of peptides, nucleosides, carbon nanotubes and electrodes, the details of which are captured in this review.

Abstract
An eco-friendly and direct arylation of hydroxyaryls in water using photoinduced reactions with different substrates (1-bromo-2-naphthol, 1-iodo-2-naphthol, N-(2-iodophenyl)acetamide, 5-bromouracil, 2-iodo-N-methylbenzamide, and 2-iodobenzamide) was studied. For example, π-expanded coumarins, compounds with potential optical applications, were synthesized in very high yield, without the use of toxic reagents, in a one-pot reaction. In addition, we demonstrate that the irradiation source (halogen lamp) can be efficiently replaced by an LED without altering the reaction yield.

Abstract
A new protocol for the preparation of N-substituted indole-3-carboxylates has been developed. The key C-N bond formation occurs under transition-metal-free conditions employing a t-BuOK/DMF system without special initiators or additives. Across a number of substrates, indoles were afforded in yields higher or comparable to those obtained under transition-metal-catalyzed conditions. While demonstrating high functional group tolerance, new conditions are particularly attractive for manufacturing halogenated indoles that cannot be made in a pure form using other metal-based catalytic methods.

Abstract
The effective removal of haloacetamides (HAMs) as a group of emerging disinfection by-products is essential for drinking water safety. This study investigated the degradation of 10 HAMs, including chlorinated, brominated, and iodinated analogues, by sodium sulfite (S(IV)) and the mechanism behind it. The results indicated that all HAMs, excluding chlorinated HAMs, decomposed immediately when exposed to S(IV). The reductive dehalogenation kinetics were well described by a second-order kinetics model, first-order in S(IV) and first-order in HAMs. The degradation rates of HAMs increased with the increase of pH and they were positively correlated with sulfite concentration, indicating that the reaction of S(IV) with HAMs mainly depends on sulfite. The rank order and relative activity of the reaction of sulfite with HAMs depends on bimolecular nucleophilic substitution reaction reactivity. The order of the reductive dehalogenation rates of HAMs versus the substitution of halogen atoms was iodo- > bromo- >> chloro-. During reductive dehalogenation of HAMs by sulfite, the α-carbon bound to the amide group underwent nucleophilic attack at 180° to the leaving group (halide). As a consequence, the halide was pushed off the opposite side, generating a transition state pentacoordinate. The breaking of the C-X bond and the formation of the new C-S bond occurred simultaneously and HAM sulfonate formed as the immediate product. Results suggest that S(IV) can be used to degrade brominated and iodinated HAMs in drinking water and therefore should not be added as a quenching agent before HAM analysis to accurately determine the HAM concentrations produced during water disinfection.

Abstract
In the past years, the activations of aromatic nitriles for radical arylations under photoirradiation have been developed. We here report the first example of radical arylations using aromatic nitriles without the assistance of photoirradiation. Importantly, with this method, the direct arylation of C(sp3)-H in benzyl amines provided a practical method for the synthesis of diarylmethylamines without the use of precious transition metal catalysts.

Abstract
The mechanism of the Ullmann-type reaction between potassium thioacetate (KSAc) and iodobenzene (PhI) catalyzed by CuI associated with 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) as a ligand was explored experimentally and computationally. The study on C-S bond formation was investigated by UV-visible spectrophotometry, cyclic voltammetry, mass spectrometry, and products assessment from radical probes. The results indicate that under experimental conditions the catalytically active species is [Cu(phen)(SAc)] regardless of the copper source. An examination of the aryl halide activation mechanism using radical probes was undertaken. No evidence of the presence of radical species was found during the reaction process, which is consistent with an oxidative addition cross-coupling pathway. The different reaction pathways leading to the experimentally observed reaction products were studied by DFT calculation. The oxidative addition-reductive elimination mechanism via an unstable CuIII intermediate is energetically more feasible than other possible mechanisms such as single electron transfer, halogen atom transfer, and σ-bond methatesis.

Abstract
Enantioselective α-arylation of racemic ketones containing existing α'-stereocenters is reported for the first time via base-induced dynamic kinetic resolution. Bridged bicyclic rings are formed in good ee values, which are difficult to obtain otherwise. Furthermore, reactions in DMSO-d6 resulted in extensive deuteration of both α- and α'-positions in the products, thus supporting a pathway involving rapid, reversible deprotonation of ketones under catalytic conditions.
