Abstract
We evaluated the effect of cocoa pod husk (CPH) processing (microwave [MW], forced-air drying [FAD], and FAD plus extrusion [FAD-E]), and in vitro gastrointestinal digestion on the in vitro human colonic fermentation metabolism, in vitro bioactivity on human HT-29 colon cancer cell, and the in silico mechanism of selected compounds. CPH as a substrate for human colonic microbiota significantly decrease local pH (MW -0.7, FAD -0.2, and FAD-E -0.3, 24 h) and modifies their metabolic activity (short-chain fatty acids [SCFAs] production). FAD-E generated the highest butyric (7.6 mM/L, 4 h) and FAD the highest acetic and propionic acid levels (71.4 and 36.7 mM/L, 24 h). The in vitro colonic fermented FAD-E sample (FE/FAD-E) caused HT-29 colorectal cancer cells death by inducing damage on membrane integrity and inhibiting (up to 92%) histone-deacetylase (HDAC) activity. In silico results showed that chlorogenic acid, (-)-epicatechin, and (+)-catechin, followed by butyric and propionic acids, are highly involved in the HDAC6 inhibitory activity. The results highlight the potential human health postbiotic benefits of CPH consumption, mediated by colonic microbiota-derived metabolites. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The enormous amount of CPH (10 tons/1 ton of dry beans) generated by the cocoa industry can be used as a removable source of bioactive compounds with physicochemical functionality and health bioactivity. However, their potential applications and health benefits are insufficiently explored. CPH represents a serious disposal problem; practical and innovative ideas to use this highly available and affordable material are urgent. Research exploring their potential applications can increase the sustainability of the cocoa agro-industry. This paper highlights the value addition that can be achieved with this valuable industrial co-product, generating new functional products and ingredients.

Abstract
Eucommia ulmoides seed oil with high health potential is prone to oxidative rancidity due to its rich unsaturated fatty acids. In this work, three natural antioxidants were selected for exploring the oxidation resistance of the oil compared with the common synthetic antioxidant BHT. Antioxidant activity and its dispersion and migration as well as oxygen barrier performance were predicted via the bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE), mean square displacement (MSD), binding energy (Ebinding) and permeability coefficient (S). The predicted comprehensive performance is as follows: myricetin > epicatechin > caffeic acid > BHT. Free radical scavenging assay and Rancimat assay confirmed the antioxidant activity and protective effect on oil. That is the protective effect of three natural antioxidants on Eucommia ulmoides seed oil is better than BHT and myricetin shows the optimal comprehensive performance. The induction period of myricetin/lipid system increased 164.5% compared with the control. The experimental results are in good consistent with the simulation predictions.

Abstract
Edible nuts are an important component of a healthy diet, and their frequent consumption has beneficial impact on human health, including reducing the risk of cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Moreover, various factors, including cultivar, climate, soil characteristic, storage and treatment have influence on the chemical composition of nuts. Therefore, nine tree nut types and peanuts commonly available on Polish market were evaluated for phenolic profile and mineral elements content. The concentration of individual phenolic compounds, including flavonoids, aromatic acids and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) was determined by ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography, while the content of macro-elements and trace minerals was analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry. The phenolic profile of analyzed nuts substantially varied depending on the type of nut. The highest total content of all analyzed flavonoids was determined in walnuts (114.861 µg/g), while the lowest in almonds (1.717 µg/g). In turn, the highest total content of all tested aromatic acid was determined in pecans (33.743 µg/g), and the lowest in almonds (0.096 µg/g). Epicatechin and cinnamic acid were detected in the highest concentration in tested nuts. Moreover, in examined nuts (except walnuts and Brazil nuts), the presence of CAPE was confirmed. The tested nuts were also characterized by wide variation in element concentrations. Almonds contained high concentration of macro-elements (13,111.60 µg/g), while high content of trace elements was determined in pine nuts (192.79 µg/g). The obtained results indicate that the tested nuts are characterized by a significant diversity in the content of both phenolic compounds and minerals. However, all types of nuts, apart from the well-known source of fatty acids, are a rich source of various components with beneficial effect on human health.

Abstract
(-)-Epicatechin (EC) is one of the most popular polyphenols present in various food products in daily life. Upon intake, it is intensively metabolized by microbiota in the large intestine. In the present study, intra- and inter-individual variations in this gut microbial conversion of EC and the concomitant formation of its major metabolites, including 5-(3′,4′-dihydroxy phenyl)-γ-valerolactone (3,4-diHPV), were identified and quantified via liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-TQ-MS) in anaerobic fecal incubations. In addition, the bioactivity of EC and 3,4-diHPV in activating Nrf2-mediated gene expression was tested quantifying their effects in the U2OS Nrf2 CALUX assay (a reporter gene assay that is used to test the potency of chemicals in activation of Nrf2 signaling), and on the expression levels of Nrf2-related proteins in Hepa1c1c7 and Caco-2 cells via nanoLC-MSMS. A quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was carried out to confirm selected Nrf2-regulated gene expressions at the mRNA level. Results obtained show that both intra- and inter-individual differences exist in human gut microbial EC degradation and 3,4-diHPV formation, with inter-individual differences being more distinct than intra-individual differences. The metabolite, 3,4-diHPV, showed higher potency in the U2OS Nrf2 CALUX assay than EC itself. Among the obviously altered Nrf2-related proteins, 14 and 10 Nrf2-associated proteins were upregulated to a higher extent upon 3,4-diHPV treatment than in the EC treated group for Hepa1c1c7 and Caco-2 cells, respectively. While only three and four of these Nrf2-associated proteins were induced at a higher level upon EC than upon 3,4-diHPV treatment for Hepa1c1c7 and Caco-2 cells, respectively. RT-qPCR results showed that indeed Nrf2-mediated genes (e.g., Nqo1 and Ugt1a) were only induced significantly in 3,4-diHPV treated and not in EC treated Hepa1c1c7 cells. Taken together, the results suggest that the major colonic EC metabolite, 3,4-diHPV, was more capable of inducing Nrf2-mediated gene expression than its parent compound EC. This implies that the evident inter- and intra-individual differences in the microbial conversion of EC to this major metabolite 3,4-diHPV may affect the overall health-promoting effects of EC consumption related to the Nrf2 pathway activation.

Abstract
Sepsis-associated encephalopathy is a common neurological complication of sepsis. Despite advances in pathological and diagnostic investigations, its treatment remains a major challenge. In sepsis-associated encephalopathy, neuroinflammatory overactivation and mitochondrial damage are thought to contribute to cognitive and behavioral impairments. In this study, we found that administration of (−)-Epicatechin, a dietary flavonoid of the flavan-3-ol subgroup, improves memory deficits and behavior performance by ameliorating neuroinflammation, regulating mitochondria function, enhancing synaptic plasticity, and reducing neuronal loss in a mouse model of lipopolysaccharide-induced sepsis. We further show that the AMPK signaling pathway might be among the mechanisms involved in the beneficial memory effects. Our data demonstrated the potential of (−)-Epicatechin as a new drug candidate for the treatment of sepsis-associated cognitive impairment by targeting AMPK.

Abstract
Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is a phenolic compound that is widely distributed in honeysuckle, Eucommia, fruits and vegetables. It has various biological functions, including cardiovascular, nerve, kidney, and liver protection, and it exerts a protective effect on human health, according to clinical research and basic research. The intestine and brain are two important organs that are closely related in the human body. The intestine is even called the "second brain" in humans. However, among the many reports in the literature, an article systematically reporting the regulatory effects and specific mechanisms of CGA on the intestines and brain has not been published. In this context, this review uses the regulatory role and mechanism of CGA in the intestine and brain as the starting point and comprehensively reviews CGA metabolism in the body and the regulatory role and mechanism of CGA in the intestine and brain described in recent years. Additionally, the review speculates on the potential biological actions of CGA in the gut-brain axis. This study provides a scientific theory for CGA research in the brain and intestines and promotes the transformation of basic research and the application of CGA in food nutrition and health care.

Abstract
Background: Gouty arthritis is a common and complex inflammatory disease that will reduce the life quality of human beings (-)-Epicatechin (EC) is famous for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of EC on gouty arthritis and its mechanisms. Methods and results: EC was added into a monosodium urate (MSU)-stimulated THP-1 cell that was induced by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in advance to establish a gout model in vitro. The efficiency of EC on acute gouty arthritis mice induced by MSU was further investigated. The results showed that EC concentration-dependently improved the cell viability of LPS and MSU stimulated THP-1 cells, and significantly alleviated MSU-induced ankle edema in mice in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, EC inhibited the infiltration of inflammatory cells and local cascular congestion in ankle joint tissue. Furthermore, the secretion of inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-18, IL-6, and TNF-α) activation of NLRP3 inflammasome and NF-κB signaling pathway were markedly suppressed by EC in vitro and in vivo. Conclusion: These results indicated that EC could effectively improve MSU-induced acute gouty arthritis via inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome and the NF-κB signaling pathway in vitro and in vivo, which suggested that EC might be a promising active ingredient for the prevention and treatment of gouty arthritis.

Abstract
Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is a pro-atherosclerotic product of dietary choline metabolism generated by a microbiome-host axis. The first step in this pathway is the enzymatic metabolism of choline to trimethylamine (TMA) by the gut microbiota. This reaction could be targeted to reduce atherosclerosis risk. We aimed to evaluate potential inhibitory effects of select dietary phenolics and their relevant gut microbial metabolites on TMA production via a human ex vivo-in vitro fermentation model. Various phenolics inhibited choline use and TMA production. The most bioactive compounds tested (caffeic acid, catechin, and epicatechin) reduced TMA-d9 formation (compared to control) by 57.5 ± 1.3 to 72.5 ± 0.4% at 8 h and preserved remaining choline-d9 concentrations by 194.1 ± 6.4 to 256.1 ± 6.3% at 8 h. These inhibitory effects were achieved without altering cell respiration or cell growth. However, inhibitory effects decreased at late fermentation times, which suggested that these compounds delay choline metabolism rather than completely inhibiting TMA formation. Overall, caffeic acid, catechin, and epicatechin were the most effective noncytotoxic inhibitors of choline use and TMA production. Thus, these compounds are proposed as lead bioactives to test in vivo.

Abstract
Herein, we developed a new Pd NP from the aq extract of Elsholtzia blanda Benth. flower that showed efficient peroxidase mimetic activity. The catalytic mechanism was confirmed through colorimetric analysis. The optimizations of temperature, concentration, PH and time were done to find out the best procedure to implement the intrinsic catalytic activity in practical applications. Michaelis-Menten constants were evaluated for both TMB and H2O2 substrate to investigate the affinity of Pd NP towards them. Km was observed to be 42.35 mM for H2O2 and 0.0076 mM for TMB. Antioxidants were sensed using the peroxidase mimetic property up to nanomolar levels with a LOD = 0.78 nM for Gallic acid 0.85 nM for Tannic acid. The method was further implemented in comparing the radical scavenging power of different phenolic compounds. Smart-phone based analysis was done for observing the change in colour which could further be utilized as an analytical tool for study the antioxidant activity. R-Square values of 0.97 and 0.96 for detection of gallic acid and tannic acid respectively suggest good linearity of the plot. Lastly, the system was utilized in the evaluation of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total phenolic content (TPC) in commercially available juices and beverages.

Abstract
Tea polyphenols (TPs) are among the most abundant functional compounds in tea. They exhibit strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer effects. However, their instability and low bioavailability limits their applications. Nanotechnology, which involves the use of nanoscale substances (sizes ranging from 1 to 100 nm) to improve the properties of substances, provides a solution for enhancing the stability and bioavailability of TPs. We reviewed the preparation, performance, effects, and applications of different types of TPs nanocarriers. First, we introduced the preparation of different nanocarriers, including nanoparticles, nanoemulsions, nanomicelles, and nanolipids. Then, we discussed various applications of tea polyphenol-loaded nanocarriers in functional ingredient delivery, food quality improvement, and active food packaging. Finally, the challenges and future development directions of TPs nanocarriers were elucidated. In conclusion, a nano-strategy may be the “key” to break the application barriers of TPs. Therefore, the use of nano-strategies for the safe, stable, and efficient release of TPs is the direction of future research.

Abstract
Ischemic stroke (IS) is one of the most fatal diseases. Neuroimmunity, inflammation, and oxidative stress play important roles in various complex mechanisms of IS. In particular, the early proinflammatory response resulting from the overactivation of resident microglia and the infiltration of circulating monocytes and macrophages in the brain after cerebral ischemia leads to secondary brain injury. Microglia are innate immune cells in the brain that constantly monitor the brain microenvironment under normal conditions. Once ischemia occurs, microglia are activated to produce dual effects of neurotoxicity and neuroprotection, and the balance of the two effects determines the fate of damaged neurons. The activation of microglia is defined as the classical activation (M1 type) or alternative activation (M2 type). M1 type microglia secrete pro-inflammatory cytokines and neurotoxic mediators to exacerbate neuronal damage, while M2 type microglia promote a repairing anti-inflammatory response. Fine regulation of M1/M2 microglial activation to minimize damage and maximize protection has important therapeutic value. This review focuses on the interaction between M1/M2 microglia and other immune cells involved in the regulation of IS phenotypic characteristics, and the mechanism of natural plant components regulating microglia after IS, providing novel candidate drugs for regulating microglial balance and IS drug development.

Abstract
Campania is the most important region of Italy in the apricot cultivation, present mostly in the Vesuvio area. At least to the best of our knowledge, no studies are reporting the biochemical characterization of the considerable number of traditional apricot varieties present on this territory, including the qualitative and quantitative profile of the polyphenols present. Our work evaluated the content of β-carotene, total phenolics, phenolic profiles, ascorbic acid and antioxidant activity of 23 traditional varieties of apricots of the Campania region. Principal component analysis (PCA) highlighted that, in the two main groups, the antioxidant activity was strongly affected by the content of ascorbic acid (-0.89), or slightly affected by the content of total polyphenols (-0.67), respect to the content of ascorbic acid (-0.55), never by β-carotene. Chlorogenic acid (up to 55.07 μg g-1) and catechin (up to 96.15 μg g-1) resulted the most abundant polyphenols recognized through the chromatographic analysis. PCA, extended to the polyphenol profile, confirmed the distribution of the varieties in two large groups, evidencing once again the hierarchical distance of four varieties ("Panzona", "Paolona" "Baracca" and "Boccucia Eboli") compared to the others.

Abstract
Methylxanthines and polyphenols from cocoa byproducts should be considered for their application in the development of functional ingredients for food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations. Different cocoa byproducts were analyzed for their chemical contents, and skincare properties were measured by antioxidant assays and anti-skin aging activity. Musty cocoa beans (MC) and second-quality cocoa beans (SQ) extracts showed the highest polyphenol contents and antioxidant capacities. In the collagenase and elastase inhibition study, the highest effect was observed for the SQ extract with 86 inhibition and 36% inhibition, respectively. Among cocoa byproducts, the contents of catechin and epicatechin were higher in the SQ extract, with 18.15 mg/100 g of sample and 229.8 mg/100 g of sample, respectively. Cocoa bean shells (BS) constitute the main byproduct due to their methylxanthine content (1085 mg of theobromine and 267 mg of caffeine/100 g of sample). Using BS, various influencing factors in the extraction process were investigated by response surface methodology (RSM), before scaling up separations. The extraction process developed under optimized conditions allows us to obtain almost 2 g/min and 0.2 g/min of total methylxanthines and epicatechin, respectively. In this way, this work contributes to the sustainability and valorization of the cocoa production chain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While the bioavailability of cocoa polyphenols, particularly of the monomer (-)-epicatechin, has been investigated after a single-dose intake, the effect of sustained cocoa consumption on the metabolic profile of the structurally related (-)-epicatechin metabolites (SREMs) has not been investigated. METHODS A randomized, controlled crossover clinical trial in healthy young adults (18-40 year) was conducted to evaluate SREMs after consumption of a single-dose and after daily consumption of 1.3 g of polyphenol-rich cocoa powder for 28 days. The circulating SREMs were measured by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). RESULTS Twenty subjects (eleven males and nine females) were enrolled. The SREMs concentrations increased to 1741 ± 337 nM after a single-dose and to 1445 ± 270 nM after sustained supplementation. Sulfate conjugates showed higher levels in females (p < 0.05). The epicatechin-3'-glucuronide (E3'G) and epicatechin-3'-sulfate (E3'S) were the most abundant metabolites in all subjects. A high intra-individual correlation (r = 0.72, p < 0.001) between SREMs concentrations after single-dose and sustained supplementation was observed. The antioxidant capacity of plasma did not change in response to the intervention and was not correlated with any of the SREMs. CONCLUSION The individual SREMs profile and concentrations after a 28-day supplementation are comparable to those after a single dose.

Abstract
Yunnan Province has a very wide diversity of tea germplasm resources. A variety of special tea germplasms with outstanding traits have been discovered, including tea germplasms with high anthocyanin content and low caffeine content. Albino tea cultivars generally have higher contents of theanine that contribute to the umami taste, and the quality of tea brewed from it is higher. The catechin index (CI), the ratio of dihydroxylated catechins (DIC) to trihydroxylated catechins (TRIC), is a crucial index of suitability for processing tea. In this study, the albino tea plant Menghai Huangye (MHHY) with yellow leaves was identified. Analysis of the biochemical components revealed that MHHY was enriched in theanine and the total catechins (TC) were lower than Yunkang 10 (YK10). In addition, the CI value of MHHY was extremely significantly higher than that of YK10. Metabolic profile of catechins and the related gene expression profile analysis found that the coordinated expression of the key branch genes F3'H and F3'5'Ha for the synthesis of DIC and TRIC in tea plant was closely related to the high CI and low TC of MHHY. Further analysis of the F3'H promoter showed that a 284-bp deletion mutation was present in the F3'H promoter of MHHY, containing the binding sites of the transcriptional repressor MYB4 involved in flavonoid metabolism, which might be an important reason for the up-regulated expression of F3'H in MHHY. Overall, this study provides a theoretical basis for understanding the characteristics of albino tea germplasm resources and efficiently utilizing high-CI tea germplasm resources.

Abstract
Alpinia oxyphylla (A. oxyphylla) fruit has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine. In our study, the bioactive components of its roots, fruit, and leaves were investigated, and their potential medical value was predicted. The root, fruit, and leaf samples were analyzed using a UPLC-MS/MS system. The mass spectrometry outcomes were annotated by MULTIAQUANT. The “compound-disease targets” were used to construct a pharmacology network. A total of 293, 277, and 251 components were identified in the roots, fruit, and leaves, respectively. The fruit of A. oxyphylla had a higher abundance of flavonols. The roots of A. oxyphylla were enriched in flavonols and phenolic acids. The leaves of A. oxyphylla exhibited high contents of flavonols, phenolic acids, and tannins. Furthermore, network pharmacology analysis showed that flavonoids are the most important effectors in the fruit of A. oxyphylla and phenolic acids are the most important effectors in the roots and leaves. Moreover, the results suggested that the tissues of A. oxyphylla might play a role in the regulation of disease-related genes. The whole plant of A. oxyphylla is rich in natural drug components, and each tissue has high medicinal value. Therefore, comprehensive utilization of A. oxyphylla can greatly improve its economic value.

Abstract
Flavonoids are secondary metabolites that are widely distributed in plants. These phenolic compounds
are classified into various subgroups based on their structures: flavones, flavonols, isoflavones, flavanones, and
anthocyanins. They are known to perform various pharmacological actions like antioxidant, anti-inflammatory,
anticancer, antimicrobial, antidiabetic and antiallergic, etc. Diabetes is a chronic progressive metabolic disorder
that affects several biochemical pathways and leads to secondary complications such as neuropathy, retinopathy,
nephropathy, and cardiomyopathy. Among them, the management of diabetic neuropathy is one of the major
challenges for physicians as well as the pharmaceutical industries. Naturally occurring flavonoids are extensively
used for the treatment of diabetes and its related complications due to their antioxidant properties. Moreover,
flavonoids inhibit various pathways that are involved in the progression of diabetic neuropathy like the reduction
of oxidative stress, decrease in glycogenolysis, increase glucose utilization, decrease in the formation of advanced
glycation end products, and inhibition of the α-glucosidase enzyme. This review entails current updates on the
therapeutic perspectives of flavonoids in the treatment of neuropathic pain. This manuscript explains the pathological
aspects of neuropathic pain, the chemistry of flavonoids, and their application in amelioration of neuropathic
pain through preclinical studies either alone or in combination with other therapeutic agents.

Abstract
Microparticles play a role in cardiovascular disease pathology. The flavanol-like epicatechin is increasingly considered due to its cardioprotective effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of epicatechin on microparticle generation, phenotype and procoagulant properties. Plasma samples from 15 healthy subjects were incubated with increasing concentrations of epicatechin (1 to 100 μM). Then, the expression of glycoprotein IIb, phosphatidylserine (PS), glycoprotein Ib (GPIb) and P-selectin was assessed by flow cytometry analysis after (or not) platelet stimulation. Microparticle procoagulant activity was determined using ZymuphenTM MP and ZymuphenTM MP-TF for phospholipid and tissue factor content, and with thrombin generation (TG) assays for procoagulant function. Platelet microparticles that express GPIb (/µL) decreased from 20,743 ± 24,985 (vehicle) to 14,939 ± 14,333 (p = 0.6), 21,366 ± 16,949 (p = 0.9) and 15,425 ± 9953 (p < 0.05) in samples incubated with 1, 10 and 100 µM epicatechin, respectively. Microparticle concentration (nM PS) decreased from 5.6 ± 2.0 (vehicle) to 5.1 ± 2.2 (p = 0.5), 4.5 ± 1.5 (p < 0.05) and 4.7 ± 2.0 (p < 0.05) in samples incubated with 1, 10 and 100µM epicatechin, respectively. Epicatechin had no impact on tissue factor-positive microparticle concentration. Epicatechin decreased TG (endogenous thrombin potential, nM.min) from 586 ± 302 to 509 ± 226 (p = 0.3), 512 ± 270 (p = 0.3) and 445 ± 283 (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that epicatechin affects microparticle release, phenotype and procoagulant properties.

Aging and muscle diseases often lead to a decline in the differentiation capacity of myoblasts, which in turn results in the deterioration of skeletal muscle (SkM) function and impairment of regeneration ability after injury. Theaflavins, the "gold molecules" found in black tea, have been reported to possess various biological activities and have a positive effect on maintaining human health. In this study, we found that among the four theaflavins (theaflavin (TF1), theaflavin-3-gallate (TF2A), theaflavin-3'-gallate (TF2B), and theaflavin-3,3'-digallate (TF3) monomers), TF1 (20 μM) significantly promoted the fusion index of myoblasts, number of mature myotubes, and degree of myotube development. By combining transcriptomics, bioinformatics, and molecular biology experiments, we showed that TF1 may promote myoblast differentiation by (1) regulating the withdrawal of myoblasts from the cell cycle, inducing the release of myogenic factors (MyoD, MyoG, and MyHC) and accelerating myogenic differentiation and (2) regulating the adhesion force of myoblasts and mechanical properties of mature myotubes and promoting the migration, fusion, and development of myoblasts. In conclusion, our study outcomes show that TF1 can promote myoblast differentiation and regulate myotube mechanical properties. It is a potential dietary supplement for the elderly. Our findings provide a new scientific basis for the relationship between tea drinking and aging.

Abstract
Bioactive compounds of different Campania native sweet pepper varieties were evaluated. Polyphenols ranged between 1.37 mmol g-1 and 3.42 mmol g-1, β-carotene was abundant in the red variety "Cazzone" (7.05 μg g-1). Yellow and red varieties showed a content of ascorbic acid not inferior to 0.82 mg g-1, while in some green varieties the presence of ascorbic acid was almost inconsistent. Interrelationships between the parameters analyzed and the varieties showed that ascorbic acid could represent the factor mostly influencing the antioxidant activity. Polyphenol profile was different among the varieties, with a general prevalence of acidic phenols in yellow varieties and of flavonoids in red varieties. Principal Component Analysis, applied to ascorbic acid, total polyphenols and β-carotene, revealed that two of the green varieties ("Friariello napoletano" and "Friariello Sigaretta") were well clustered and that the yellow variety "Corno di capra" showed similarity with the green varieties, in particular with "Friariello Nocerese". This was confirmed by the interrelationships applied to polyphenol composition, which let us to light on a clustering of several red and yellow varieties, and that mainly the yellow "Corno di capra" was closer to the green varieties of "Friariello".
