Development and Characterization of Citrus Junos Pomace Pectin Films Incorporated With Rambutan (Nephelium Lappaceum) Peel Extract

New packaging materials using biopolymers have been studied to substitute synthetic packaging materials that lead to environmental pollution. In this study, a new biodegradable packaging material was developed using the pectin extracted from Citrus junos pomace, which is considered a food processing byproduct. Rambutan peel extract (RPE), at different concentrations (0.25%, 0.5%, and 1.0%), was added as an active material, and the functional properties of the C. junos pectin (CJP) films were evaluated. The incorporation of RPE enhanced the extensibility of the CJP films and their light-blocking ability by decreasing light transmittance. As the concentration of RPE increased, antioxidant activities of the CJP films increased, along with an increase in total phenolic content. Subsequently, the CJP prepared in this study can be used as a low-cost active biodegradable film material, and RPE can be added as a natural antioxidant for the CJP films to confer antioxidant activity.

Characterization and functional properties of a pectin/tara gum based edible film with ellagitannins from the unripe fruits of Rubus chingii Hu

Edible films are popular for the development of food packaging. The suitable additive is the key point for the improvement of edible film performance. In this study, edible films (LTEFs) based on blends of ellagitannins (ET) from the unripe fruits of Rubus chingii Hu, low methoxyl pectin (LMP) and tara gum (TG) were characterized and evaluated. The results showed that the thickness and water resistance were increased with the addition of TG and ET. The content of TG and ET obviously influenced its mechanical properties. FT-IR and SEM results suggested that there were interactions between ET and the film substrates, which modified its structure and connection mode. Moreover, the LTEF showed effective antioxidant activity and antimicrobial activity. These results suggested that TG and ETs had the potential to improve the performance of the pectin film and the LTEF could be used as a functional edible film for application in food industries.

In-vitro antibacterial effect of tea polyphenols combined with common antibiotics on multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae

BACKGROUND

To investigate the bactericidal effect of tea polyphenols on multidrug resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae and its antibacterial efficacy in combination with common antibiotics, and to explore its mechanism.

METHODS

The VITEK 2 Compact automatic microbial identification system was used to identify 20 strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from clinical isolates. The KB method was used to detect sensitivity of common drugs such as imipenem, piperacillin, piperacillin/tazobactam and cefepime, cefotaxime and ceftazidime; agar dilution method was used for detection of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of tea polyphenols; the variation of the diameter of the antibacterial ring after different concentrations (0.25 MIC, 0.5 MIC) of tea polyphenols in combination with commonly used antibacterial drugs was detected to judge the feasibility of the inhibition of the multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae by the combination of tea polyphenols and commonly used antibacterial drugs. Congo red and crystal violent staining was used to detect the impact on bacterial biofilm formation and extracellular mucus-like substance (slime).

RESULTS

The K-B values of 20 strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae against common antibiotics were 6-14 mm; the MIC of tea polyphenols against 20 strains of multi-drug resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae was 1024 ug/mL; 0.5 MIC tea polyphenols can increase the diameter of the bacteriostatic ring of imipenem, piperacillin, piperacillin/tazobactam, cefepime, cefotaxime and ceftazidime by 3-28 mm. Tea polyphenols at sub-inhibitory concentrations significantly inhibited the production of Klebsiella pneumoniae biofilm and extracellular mucus (slime).

CONCLUSIONS

Tea polyphenols could be used in combination with commonly used antibiotics (imipenem, piperacillin, piperacillin/tazobactam, cefepime, cefotaxime and ceftazidime) against multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae. It has a synergistic bactericidal effect and affects the formation of bacterial outer membrane and the production of extracellular slime-like substances (slime).

Preparation and Characterization of UV-Curable Acrylic Membranes Embedding Natural Antioxidants

We examine the behaviour of acrylic resin-based membranes containing natural anti-oxidants, such as Galla chinensis tea powder extract (TP) and Taiwanese green propolis (TGP), in different concentrations ranging between 5 and 20 wt %. Membrane morphology was investigated by means of Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM), while the UV-curing reaction was monitored by Fourier-Transform Infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy. In most cases Thermogravimetric (TG), Differential Scanning Calorimetric (DSC) and Dynamo-mechanical Thermal (DMT) analyses showed that the desirable characteristics of the UV-cured acrylic resin are not substantially altered by the presence of the organic fillers. The release kinetics of polyphenols and flavonoids, determined in water for TP-containing membranes (ETx) and in ethanol/water mixture (7:3 v/v) for TGP-containing ones (EPx), was satisfactory, reaching a plateau after 24 h. Finally, preliminary antibacterial tests against S. epidermidis were performed on the membranes with higher additive amount and gave positive results for ET-type; on the contrary, no inhibitory effect was observed for the tested EP-type membranes.

Recent Trends in the Use of Pectin from Agro-Waste Residues as a Natural-Based Biopolymer for Food Packaging Applications

Regardless of the considerable progress in properties and versatility of synthetic polymers, their low biodegradability and lack of environmentally-friendly character remains a critical issue. Pectin is a natural-based polysaccharide contained in the cell walls of many plants allowing their growth and cell extension. This biopolymer can be extracted from plants and isolated as a bioplastic material with different applications, including food packaging. This review aims to present the latest research results regarding pectin, including the structure, different types, natural sources and potential use in several sectors, particularly in food packaging materials. Many researchers are currently working on a multitude of food and beverage industry applications related to pectin as well as combinations with other biopolymers to improve some key properties, such as antioxidant/antimicrobial performance and flexibility to obtain films. All these advances are covered in this review.
