Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory skin disease. Systemic treatment is usually mandatory in moderate-to-severe AD of the adult; these patients need to be informed about safe and effective management of AD also regarding the reproduction. Treating a pregnant woman with AD with systemic drugs may affect the unborn child. While effects of traditional systemic treatments for AD on female fertility, pregnancy, and breastfeeding are largely known, data about new emergent therapies for AD are still poor. Treating pregnant or lactating women with AD can be a challenge since no large clinical studies on its possible effects and side-effects on conception, pregnancy, the unborn child and lactation are currently available for new AD treatments.

Abstract
Allergic dermatitis (AD), associated with pruritus and itchiness, is one of the major stressful conditions early in life. AD also influences the incidence of neuropsychiatric disorders and developmental disorders through neuro-immune interactions. To the best of our knowledge, there is no report that assesses the effects of early childhood dermatitis on psychiatric disorders later in life using an animal model. Here, we developed an oxazolone (Ox)-induced AD model in the early life of male C57BL/6J mice whose ears were challenged by Ox repeatedly from postnatal days (PD) 2 to PD30. On PD30, the Ox-treated ears were remarkably thickened and showed epidermal hyperplasia coupled with increased expression of T helper 2 cytokines, interleukin (IL)-4, and IL-13 in the ear tissue. Additionally, serum immunoglobulin E levels and serum corticosterone levels were higher in the Ox-treated mice than those in the control mice. Although Ox-treated PD40 mice showed neither behavioral abnormalities nor increases in pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in the brain, this study revealed that they experienced downregulation of CD200R1 expression in the amygdala under basal conditions and that additional lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration induced enhanced neuroinflammatory reaction as the priming effect was accompanied by an increase of Iba-1-positive microglia in the amygdala and hippocampus. Furthermore, the Ox-treated PD40 mice showed depressive-like behaviors 24 h after LPS administration, whereas the control mice did not. Interestingly, the expression of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase and kynurenine 3-monooxygenase, key rate-limiting enzymes of the kynurenine metabolism pathway, was upregulated in the hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, and amygdala of the Ox-treated mice 4 h after LPS administration. Based on these results, we suggest that early life stress from AD aggravates susceptibility to systemic inflammation in the adolescent brain, leading to depressive behaviors with abnormal kynurenine metabolism.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There are few atopic dermatitis (AD) incidence cohort studies in young adults, the etiology of this disease remains obscure, and AD risk factors in adults are not well understood. The objective of this study was to estimate AD ten-year incidence and prevalence in a cohort of adolescent aged 14-16 at inception in Castellon province in Valencia Region, Spain and describe related risk factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS From 2002 to 2012, a population-based prospective cohort study was carried out. Questionnaires from the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) were used with an additional questionnaire for related factors completed by participants and their parents, respectively, in 2002. In 2012 the same questionnaires were completed by the participants' through a telephone interview, and incidence and prevalence of AD were estimated. Directed acyclic graphs, Poisson regression and inverse probability weighted regression adjustment were used. RESULTS The participation rate was 79.5% (1435/1805) with AD lifetime prevalence of 34.9% and AD incidence of 13.5 per 1000 person years. Females presented higher prevalence and incidence than males. After adjustment significant risk factors were being female, history of asthma or allergic rhinitis, family history of AD, history of respiratory infections, history of bronchitis, history of pneumonia, history of sinusitis, and birthplace outside Castellon province. The highest AD population attributable risks were female, 30.3%, and history of respiratory infections 15.3%. Differences with AD childhood risk factors were found. CONCLUSIONS AD incidence in our cohort was high and several risks factors were related to AD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many patients with atopic dermatitis seek care from both primary care physicians and dermatologists. However, little is known regarding topical corticosteroid prescribing patterns among these specialties. OBJECTIVE We sought to determine if differences exist in topical corticosteroid prescribing patterns among dermatologists, family medicine physicians, and internal medicine physicians. METHODS We conducted a population-based, cross-sectional analysis using data from the U.S. National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey from 2006 to 2016. RESULTS Compared to dermatologists, internal medicine physicians were 22 times less likely to prescribe a topical corticosteroid for atopic dermatitis (52.2% versus 5.1%, p = .001; adjusted OR 0.045, 95%CI 0.007-0.277). There was not a statistically significant difference in the rate of topical corticosteroid prescriptions for atopic dermatitis between family medicine physicians and dermatologists (39.1% vs. 52.2%, p = .27; adjusted OR 0.468, 95%CI 0.174-1.257). Family medicine physicians had a higher rate of prescribing topical corticosteroids for atopic dermatitis than internal medicine physicians (39.1% vs. 5.1%, p = .002). LIMITATIONS Severity of atopic dermatitis was not assessed. CONCLUSIONS Atopic dermatitis patients seen by internal medicine physicians are much less likely to receive topical corticosteroid prescriptions as compared to those seen by dermatologists.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To discuss the efficacy and safety of novel and emerging topical and systemic therapeutic agents for atopic dermatitis (AD). DATA SOURCES The review of the published literature was performed using the PubMed database, published abstracts and virtual presentations from scientific meetings, posted results on ClinicalTrials.gov, and data from industry press releases. STUDY SELECTIONS Primary manuscripts with trial results, case reports, case series, clinical trial data from ClinicalTrials.gov, and articles highlighting expert perspectives on management of AD were selected. RESULTS Emerging topical and systemic therapies primarily target the type 2 immune pathway. Moreover, 2 newer targeted medications are now approved by the Food and Drug Administration for both children and adults, crisaborole 2% ointment and dupilumab, with several others in the therapeutic pipeline. New directions in developing topical medications include Janus kinase inhibitors, tapinarof (an aryl hydrocarbon receptor agonist), and agents to correct microbial dysbiosis. In addition to the subcutaneously injected monoclonal antibody targeting the interleukin (IL) 4 receptor (dupilumab), other biologics targeting IL-13, IL-31, IL-33, OX40, and thymic stromal lymphopoietin are currently being tested. Oral Janus kinase inhibitors are showing outstanding efficacy and no serious safety signs, but safety concerns remain. CONCLUSION Given the tremendous burden of AD on physical, mental, and social health, the need is high to develop new, targeted therapies. Advances in our understanding of AD pathogenesis have paved the way toward the development of new therapies that promise to revolutionize our management of AD. Future research will focus on long-term efficacy and safety and creating predictive models for choosing best management options on a personalized basis.

Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a multifactorial disease associated with alterations in lipid composition and organization in the epidermis. Multiple variants of AD exist with different outcomes in response to therapies. The evaluation of disease progression and response to treatment are observational assessments with poor inter-observer agreement highlighting the need for molecular markers. SHARPIN-deficient mice (Sharpincpdm) spontaneously develop chronic proliferative dermatitis with features similar to AD in humans. To study the changes in the epidermal lipid-content during disease progression, we tested 72 epidermis samples from three groups (5-, 7-, and 10-weeks old) of cpdm mice and their WT littermates. An agnostic mass-spectrometry strategy for biomarker discovery termed multiple-reaction monitoring (MRM)-profiling was used to detect and monitor 1,030 lipid ions present in the epidermis samples. In order to select the most relevant ions, we utilized a two-tiered filter/wrapper feature-selection strategy. Lipid categories were compressed, and an elastic-net classifier was used to rank and identify the most predictive lipid categories for sex, phenotype, and disease stages of cpdm mice. The model accurately classified the samples based on phospholipids, cholesteryl esters, acylcarnitines, and sphingolipids, demonstrating that disease progression cannot be defined by one single lipid or lipid category.

Abstract
Erythroderma is characterized by erythema and scaling affecting more than 80% of the body surface area. It is potentially life-threatening, and diagnosis of the underlying disease is a challenge. Despite laboratory improvements, many cases remain idiopathic. We aimed to analyze clinical and laboratory findings of 309 erythrodermic patients to find clues to the etiologic diagnosis. We performed a prospective study at the University of São Paulo Medical School, from 2007 to 2018, with patients with acquired erythroderma. Clinical, laboratory, histology, and molecular biology data were collected. The median age at diagnosis was 57 years, with a male-to-female ratio of 2.2. Eczema was the most frequent etiology (20.7%), followed by psoriasis (16.8%), Sézary syndrome (12.3%), drug eruption (12.3%), atopic dermatitis (8.7%), and mycosis fungoides (5.5%). Other diagnoses (6.8%) included pemphigus foliaceous, paraneoplastic erythroderma, adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma, dermatomyositis, pityriasis rubra pilaris, lichen planus, bullous pemphigoid, and leprosy. In 52 patients (16.8%), it was not possible to elucidate erythroderma etiology. Atopic dermatitis developed erythroderma at an earlier age (median 25 years; P = 0.0001). Acute onset was associated with drug reactions and atopic dermatitis (median time from erythroderma to diagnosis of 1 and 1.5 months, respectively; P = 0.0001). Higher immunoglobulin E levels were observed in atopic dermatitis (median 24,600 U/L; P = 0.0001). Histopathology was helpful and was consistent with the final diagnosis in 72.4%. Monoclonal T-cell proliferation in the skin was observed in mycosis fungoides (33.3%) and Sézary syndrome (90.9%). At the last assessment, 211 patients (69.3%) were alive with disease, 65 (21.7%) were alive without disease, and 27 (9.1%) died with active disease. Erythroderma is a challenging syndrome with a difficult diagnostic approach. Younger age and higher immunoglobulin E levels are associated with atopic dermatitis; acute onset is observed in drug eruptions and atopic dermatitis. Histopathology and molecular biology tests are essential tools in the investigation of erythroderma.

Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory disease with increasing global incidence, which has a multifactorial pathogenesis and a variable expressivity. Clinical features of AD are different in adults compared to children, but it is well recognized the substantial impact of the disease on patients' quality of life at any age. Indeed, little is known about AD in adolescence, a period of life generally associated with high psychological burden and vulnerability to depression. Guidelines for the management of AD are available for both children and adults but specific guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of AD in adolescents are lacking. Seven Italian scientific societies of dermatologists, allergists, and pediatric allergists joined in a specific meeting to provide practical guidance for the diagnosis and management of moderate-to-severe adolescent AD suitable for the Italian clinical practice. Through a modified Delphi procedure, consensus was reached by 59 Italian experts in the management of AD on 20 statements covering five areas of interest about adolescent AD, including disease complexity, burden and social impact, diagnosis and definition of severity, current treatments, and new biologic therapies. This paper reports recommendations for the diagnosis and management of AD specifically in adolescents, pointing out some peculiar clinical features and focusing on the choice of medications. Dupilumab, the first biologic approved for the treatment of adolescents with AD, represents a useful treatment option due to its efficacy and reassuring safety profile.

Abstract
Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) are stromal-derived non-hematopoietic progenitor cells that reside in and can be expanded from various tissues sources of adult and neonatal origin, such as the bone marrow, umbilical cord, umbilical cord blood, adipose tissue, amniotic fluid, placenta, dental pulp and skin. The discovery of the immunosuppressing action of MSCs on T cells has opened new perspectives for their use as a therapeutic agent for immune-mediated disorders, including allergies. Atopic dermatitis (AD), a chronic and relapsing skin disorder that affects up to 20% of children and up to 3% of adults worldwide, is characterized by pruritic eczematous lesions, impaired cutaneous barrier function, Th2 type immune hyperactivation and, frequently, elevation of serum immunoglobulin E levels. Although, in the dermatology field, the application of MSCs as a therapeutic agent was initiated using the concept of cell replacement for skin defects and wound healing, accumulating evidence have shown that MSC-mediated immunomodulation can be applicable to the treatment of inflammatory/allergic skin disorders. Here we reviewed the pre-clinical and clinical studies and possible biological mechanisms of MSCs as a therapeutic tool for the treatment of atopic dermatitis.

Abstract
Introduction: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a heterogeneous disease. Recent advancements in understanding AD pathogenesis resulted in the exponential expansion of its therapeutic pipeline, particularly following the success and FDA-approval of dupilumab. Different phenotypes of AD by age and ethnicity have also recently been described and clinical studies of emerging treatments will further clarify the role of each cytokine pathway in AD.Areas covered: We review the impressive repertoire of biologics for treatment of moderate-to-severe AD, including those targeting Th2, Th22, Th17/IL-23 and IgE. We highlight the scientific rationale behind each approach and provide a discussion of the most recent clinical efficacy and safety data.Expert opinion: AD is a complex disease and recent research has identified numerous endotypes, reinforcing the rationale for developing targeted therapeutics to antagonize these factors. Dupilumab has revolutionized AD treatment and its mechanistic studies also offer crucial insight into AD pathogenesis. Nevertheless, this biologic does not work for everyone, highlighting the need for a more precise approach to address the unique immune fingerprints of each AD subset. Ultimately targeted therapeutics will complement our understanding of the AD molecular map and help push AD management into an era of personalized medicine.

Abstract
Although the prevalence of atopic dermatitis is high in nurses, there is a lack of research on the relationship between atopic dermatitis and depressive symptoms and sleep disturbance among female nurses. This study aimed to determine the effects of atopic dermatitis on depressive symptoms and sleep disturbance in female nurses. We analyzed the data of the Korea Nurses’ Health Study, a large-scale prospective cohort study. A total of 20,613 female hospital nurses aged 20–45 years who participated in the Module 1 of Korea Nurses’ Health Study between July 2013 and November 2014 were included. The chi-square test, t-test, and multivariate ordinal logistic regression analysis were conducted for statistical analysis. The prevalence of atopic dermatitis among female nurses was 11.6%. The levels of depressive symptoms and sleep disturbance were higher in nurses with atopic dermatitis than those without atopic dermatitis. Nurses with atopic dermatitis were 1.16 times more likely to have depressive symptoms and 1.35 times more likely to have sleep disturbance than those without atopic dermatitis after adjusting for confounding variables. The results of this study suggest that additional support should be considered for nurses with atopic dermatitis to improve the occupational environment for managing and preventing the exacerbation of symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to gather information on the current assessment and management of patients with moderate-to-severe AD in routine daily practice. METHODS A cross-sectional two-round Delphi survey with the participation of dermatologists and allergologists throughout Spain was conducted. They completed a 46-item questionnaire, and consensus was defined when responses of ≥80% of participants coincided in the categories of a 5-point Likert scale for that item. RESULTS A total of 105 specialists (aged 40-59 years) completed the two rounds. Participants agreed regarding the consideration of AD as a multifaceted disease and the differences in clinical presentation of AD according to the patient's age. It is recommendable to perform a skin biopsy to exclude early stage T-cell cutaneous lymphoma, psoriasis, or dermatitis herpetiformis, among others (99.1%). Also, consensus was reached regarding the use of the SCORAD index to quantify the severity of the disease (86.7%), the use of wet wraps to increase the effect of topical corticosteroids (90.4%), the usefulness of proactive treatment during follow-up (85.6%) and tacrolimus ointment (91.2%) to reduce new flares, and the fact that crisaborole is not the treatment of choice for severe AD (92.4%). AD was not considered a contraindication for immunotherapy in patients with allergic respiratory diseases (92.4%). In patients with severe AD, the use of immune response modifier drugs (97.6%) or phototherapy (92.8%) does not sufficiently cover their treatment needs. Consensus was also obtained regarding the role of the new biologic drugs (93.6%) targeting cytokines involved in the Th2 inflammatory pathway (92.0%) and the potential role of dupilumab as first-line treatment (90.4%) in moderate-to-severe AD patients. CONCLUSION This study contributes a reference framework to the care of AD patients. There is no diagnostic test or biomarkers to direct treatment or to assess the severity of the disease, and many therapeutic challenges remain.

Abstract
Background Atopic dermatitis (AD) is recognized as a common inflammatory skin disease and frequently occurred in Asian and Black individuals. Objective Since the limitation of dataset associated with human severe AD, this study aimed to screen potential novel biomarkers involved in mild AD. Methods Expression profile data (GSE75890) were obtained from the database of Gene Expression Omnibus. Using limma package, the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between samples from AD and healthy control were selected. Furthermore, function analysis was conducted. Meanwhile, the protein-protein interaction (PPI) network and transcription factor (TF)-miRNA-target regulatory network were constructed. And quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to validate the expressions patterns of key genes. Results In total, 285 DEGs including 214 upregulated and 71 downregulated genes were identified between samples from two groups. The upregulated DEGs were mainly involved in nine pathways, such as hematopoietic cell lineage, pertussis, p53 signaling pathway, staphylococcus aureus infection, and cell cycle, while tight junction was the only pathway enriched by the downregulated DEGs. Cyclin B (CCNB)1, CCNB2, cyclin A (CCNA)2, C-X-C motif chemokine ligand (CXCL)10, and CXCL9 were key nodes in PPI network. The TF-miRNA-target gene regulatory network focused on miRNAs such as miR-106b, miR-106a, and miR-17, TFs such as nuclear factor kappa B subunit 1, RELA proto-oncogene, Sp1 transcription factor, and genes such as matrix metallopeptidase 9, peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma , and serpin family E member 1. Moreover, the upregulation of these genes, including CCNB1, CCNB2, CCNA2, CXCL10, and CXCL9 were confirmed by qRT-PCR. Conclusion CCNB1, CCNB2, CCNA2, and CXCL9 might be novel markers of mild AD. miR-106b and miR-17 may involve in regulation of immune response in AD patients.

Abstract
Clinically, it has been reported that atopic dermatitis (AD) has been linked with negative emotional problems such as depression and anxiety, thereby reducing the quality of life, but little is known about the molecular mechanism that underlies AD-associated emotional impairments. We sought to determine whether AD could induce anxiety- and depressive-like symptoms in mice and to identify pertinent signaling changes in brain reward circuitry. AD-like lesions were induced by the repeated intradermal application of MC903 into the cheek of the mouse. We assessed dermatitis severity with scratching behavior, histopathological changes, anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors using the elevated plus maze, open field and tail suspension tests, and serum corticosterone levels. In the nucleus accumbens (NAc), dorsal striatum (DS) and ventral tegmental area (VTA), protein levels of dopamine- and plasticity-related signaling molecules were determined by Western immunoblotting assay. Intradermal administration of MC903 into mouse cheek provoked a strong hind limb scratching behavior as well as the robust skin inflammation with epidermal thickening. MC903-treated mice also displayed markedly increased anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors, along with elevated serum corticosterone levels. Under these conditions, enhanced cAMP response element binding protein (CREB) and dopamine and cAMP-regulated phosphoprotein, 32 kDa (DARPP32) phosphorylation, significantly higher brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and ΔFosB, but reduced tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and dopamine D1 receptor (D1R) protein expression were found in the NAc, DS and VTA. Striatal BDNF, phospho-DARPP32 and phospho-CREB levels were significantly associated with the levels of depressive-like behavior in these mice. Taken together, these findings demonstrate that AD-like skin lesion elicits anxiety- and depressive-like phenotypes that are associated with neuroplasticity-related changes in reward circuitry, providing a better understanding of AD-associated emotional impairments.

Abstract
Recent epidemiological studies found the US prevalence of atopic dermatitis in adults to be approximately 7%. In particular, one in four adults with atopic dermatitis report adult onset of their disease. Adult-onset compared to child-onset atopic dermatitis is associated with distinct risk factors, lesional distribution and morphology, associated signs, genetics, and comorbidities. Adult-onset atopic dermatitis is a clinical diagnosis, and must be distinguished from other entities in the differential diagnosis, e.g., allergic contact dermatitis and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Further research is necessary to better understand the pathogenesis and optimal treatment approaches in adult-onset/recurrent atopic dermatitis.

Abstract
Background SCORing for Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) is a tool developed by the European Task Force on Atopic Dermatitis (AD) which is used by physicians to assess AD severity during consultations with their patients. Patient‐Oriented SCORAD (PO‐SCORAD) is a self‐assessment tool for use by patients which has been validated in a study performed in European countries. However, there is currently no adapted tool for evaluating AD severity in black skin. Objective To evaluate the performance of the version of the PO‐SCORAD specifically adapted for black skin patients (children and adults) with AD. Methods In this multicenter, cross‐sectional and non‐interventional study, children and adults with AD were recruited during regular consultations. This international study was performed in seven sub‐Saharan countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Mali and Senegal). During the consultation, AD severity was assessed by the physician using SCORAD score and by the patients or parents using PO‐SCORAD. Results One hundred and thirteen patients were included, 72 children and 41 adults, mainly females (61.6%). SCORAD assessed by physicians and PO‐SCORAD assessed by patients/parents were well correlated (r = 0.66, P < 0.0001). Correlation coefficients for SCORAD and PO‐SCORAD subscale scores were also good, except for symptom intensity criteria. Conclusion Altogether, these data indicate that PO‐SCORAD for black skin correlates well with SCORAD and is therefore a valuable tool, which requires no specific level of education, for use by black skin patients with AD.

Abstract
Atopic eczema is one of the most prevalent diseases worldwide. It is a common dermatological disorder that affects 17.8 million individuals in the USA, up to 20% of children and up to 3% of adults. Recent data show that the incidence of the disease is still rising, both in children and adults, especially in low-income countries. Atopic dermatitis in adults consists of childhood-onset (COAD) and adult or late-onset types (LOAD). Prior research has described differences in clinical features, laboratory data, and response to treatment between COAD and LOAD. Most studies have been done on an ambulatory population that mostly contains patients with mild to moderate disease. OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to describe the differences between adults hospitalized with COAD and LOAD. METHODS Data were analyzed from a retrospective cohort of 107 adult AD patients who were hospitalized from 2009 to 2017. Analysis of data included epidemiology, clinical and laboratory characteristics, and response to treatment. RESULTS Of the total sample, 87 (81%) patients were diagnosed with LOAD, and 20 (19%) patients were diagnosed with COAD. The median age was 66 years for all patients, 42 years for COAD patients, and 77 years for LOAD patients. The prevalence of atopy was lower in the LOAD group than in the COAD group (33.8 vs. 68.8% for family history, 35.5 vs. 84.8% for personal history). A higher incidence of head, neck, and flexural involvement was found in COAD patients. LOAD patients had lower immunoglobulin E levels and responded better to phototherapy. CONCLUSIONS Elderly patients with LOAD constitute the majority of adults hospitalized with AD. As in ambulatory AD patients, there are significant differences in medical background, clinical picture, laboratory characteristics, and response to treatment between hospitalized LOAD and COAD patients. There is a need to determine diagnostic criteria and treatment guidelines for these patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Symptoms of anxiety and depression appear to contribute to the overall burden of atopic dermatitis (AD). However, the burden of mental health symptoms and psychological distress in AD have not been fully elucidated. OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence and predictors of depressive symptoms and psychological distress among US adults with AD and how they compare with psoriasis and other disorders. METHODS We analyzed the 2004-2015 Medical Expenditure Panel Surveys, a representative sample of US adults. Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2) and Kessler-6 index (K-6) scores assessed depressive symptoms and psychological distress, respectively. RESULTS Atopic dermatitis in adults is associated with increased odds of screening positive for depressive symptoms (PHQ-2 ≥2) (44.3% vs 21.9%; adjusted odds ratio [aOR] [95% confidence interval (CI)]: 2.86 [1.14, 7.16]) and severe psychological distress (K-6≥13) (25.9% vs 5.5%; 6.04 [2.28, 15.99]). Adults with vs without AD had increased K6 scores overall (linear regression, P = .04) and severe psychological distress in particular (K-6≥13; logistic regression; adjusted odds ratio [95% CI]: 6.04 [2.28, 15.99]). K-6 scores were associated with lower household income (linear regression; adjusted beta [95% CI]: 6.22 [0.88, 11.56]) and middle income (4.49 [0.39, 8.59]), but inversely associated with black (-7.36 [-11.70, -3.03]) and multiracial/other (-2.85 [-5.67, -0.03]) race/ethnicity. CONCLUSION Atopic dermatitis is associated with more depressive symptoms and psychological distress overall, and even worse than many other chronic diseases. These findings highlight the need for clinicians to consider screening for and monitoring mental health symptoms in AD patients. Future studies are needed to develop interventions to reduce psychological distress in AD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Adherence to topical corticosteroids (TCS) for inflammatory skin conditions is sub-optimal. This Australian study aimed to test the hypothesis that patients who are more satisfied with the level of information they receive about TCS, are less concerned about using TCS and more adherent to healthcare professionals' instructions. METHODS Individuals who were prescribed or had used TCS in the past month were invited to complete an online cross-sectional survey. Reliability and validity of multi-item scales were tested using confirmatory factor analysis. Self-reported adherence to TCS was measured with MARS-5. Multivariate regression with mediation analyses was used to explore relationships between variables. RESULTS Mediation analyses of 195 survey (64.4%) responses was performed. Overall satisfaction with information about TCS action and usage (SIMS-AU) (mean = 60.7%) was higher than potential concerns (SIMS-PC) (mean = 48.2%). Analysis revealed that the SIMS subscales were highly correlated (α = 0.57, p < 0.05). Higher overall SIMS scores were predictive of stronger beliefs that TCS was beneficial, fewer concerns about TCS and better adherence. CONCLUSION Being more satisfied with TCS information was associated with having more favourable disposition towards TCS and higher adherence. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Healthcare professionals should identity areas of dissatisfaction with medication information and tailor their counselling accordingly.
