Abstract
Purpose The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the association between dental implants in the posterior region and traumatic occlusion in the adjacent premolars, using data collected during from 2002 to 2015. Methods Traumatic occlusion in the adjacent premolars was assessed by examining clinical parameters (bleeding on probing, probing pocket depth, fremitus, and tooth mobility) and radiographic parameters (loss of supporting bone and widening of the periodontal ligament space) over a mean follow-up of 5 years. Clinical factors (gender, age, implant type, maxillary or mandibular position, opposing teeth, and duration of functional loading) were evaluated statistically in order to characterize the relationship between implants in the posterior region and traumatic occlusion in the adjacent premolars. Results The study inclusion criteria were met by 283 patients, who had received 347 implants in the posterior region. The incidence of traumatic occlusion in the adjacent premolars was significantly higher for splinted implants (P=0.004), implants in the maxillary region (P<0.001), and when implants were present in the opposing teeth (P<0.001). The other clinical factors of gender, age, and duration of functional loading were not significantly associated with traumatic occlusion. Conclusions This study found that the risk of traumatic occlusion in the adjacent premolars increased when splinted implants were placed in the maxillary molar region and when the teeth opposing an implant also contained implants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the outcomes of implant therapy in partially dentate patients treated for aggressive periodontitis (GAgP) in comparison to periodontally healthy (HP) and patients treated for chronic periodontitis (CP) utilizing radiographic and clinical parameters. MATERIAL AND METHODS An electronic search of databases, supplemented by hand searching, was conducted to identify relevant clinical studies. Sequential screenings at the title, abstract and full-text levels were performed independently and in duplicate. A random effects meta-analysis was conducted and bias corrected bootstrap 95 % confidence intervals were estimated for group comparisons. RESULTS The search strategy revealed a total of 899 results. After title screening, abstract scanning, and full-text reading, seven articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The 3-year survival rate for CP and HP patients was 100 % while in GAgP subjects, the respective value was 97.98 %; this difference being statistically significant. The 3-year mean marginal bone loss (MBL) was 1.07 mm for the GAgP group, 0.47 mm for the CP group, and 0.69 mm for the HP group. A significant difference between the GAgP and CP groups was identified (p < 0.05). The weighted mean differences of MBL concerning the above groups were also calculated and examined for statistical significance in both 1 and 3 years. CONCLUSIONS The 3-year survival rate and peri-implant marginal bone loss was found statistically significantly lower in GAgP subjects (SR 97.98 % vs 100 %) in comparison to HP and CP individuals. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The outcome of implant therapy in terms of survival rate and marginal bone loss is considered very important for the clinician in decision making when placing implants in patients with a history of aggressive periodontitis.

Abstract
Extraction, periodontitis, or trauma can cause a reduction on the alveolar ridge. This could result in an insufficient alveolar bone width and height. Different techniques of vertical bone augmentation are described in literature. However, nowadays there is not enough evidence against lateral augmentation procedures to verify if these techniques are stable over a long period of time.

Abstract
Oral symptoms are among the most distressing manifestations for patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS). The feeling of dry mouth is unpleasant, and hyposalivation may contribute to difficulty in speaking, chewing and swallowing and reduced quality of life. Reduced salivary flow increases the risk for dental caries and problems with prosthetic replacement. It seems that SS is not as frequently occurring as previously anticipated. Population-based prevalence studies on primary SS in Europe, conducted on large background populations and in accordance with the AECG criteria, reported of a prevalence of 1-9 cases per 10,000 people. This gives a combined prevalence of nearly 39/100,000 (~0.04 %). The cause of Sjögren's syndrome is even now not fully understood, and the treatment of oral symptoms is still mostly palliative. Hopefully, useful information will appear from the new methods that are now available for genome wide association studies, epigenetics, DNA methylation studies, and proteomics. Similarly, this is anticipated for the immunological side of the story. The interferon signature, the interferon γ/interferon α mRNA ratio, and CXCL13 are among the proposed biomarkers of active disease. In this review, we provide an update on oral aspects of Sjögren's syndrome with emphasis on the latest publications on these topics.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dental implants are one of the common lines of treatment used for the treatment of missing tooth. Various risk factors are responsible for the failure of the dental implants and occurrence of postoperative complications. Bruxism is one such factor responsible for the failure of the dental implants. The actual relation between bruxism and dental implants is a subject of long-term controversy. Hence, we carried out this retrospective analysis to assess the complications occurring in dental implants in patients with and without bruxism. MATERIALS AND METHODS The present study included 1100 patients which were treated for rehabilitation by dental implant procedure at 21 dental offices of Ghaziabad (India) from 2004 to 2014. Analyzing the clinical records of the patients along with assessing the photographs of the patients was done for confirming the diagnosis of bruxism. Clinical re-evaluation of the patients, who came back for follow-up, was done to confirm the diagnosis of bruxism. Systemic questionnaires as used by previous workers were used to evaluate the patients about the self-conscience of the condition. Estimation of the mechanical complications was done only in those cases which occurred on the surfaces of the restoration of the dental implants. All the results were analyzed by Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software. Student's t-test and Pearson's chi-square test were used to evaluate the level of significance. RESULTS In both bruxer and non-bruxers, maximum number of dental implants was placed in anterior maxillary region. Significant difference was obtained while comparing the two groups for dimensions of the dental implants used. On comparing the total implant failed cases between bruxers and non-bruxers group, statistically significant result was obtained. Statistically significant difference was obtained while comparing the two study groups based on the health parameters, namely hypertension, diabetes, and smoking habit. CONCLUSION Success of dental implant is significantly affected by bruxism. Special attention is required in such patients while doing treatment planning. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE For the long-term clinical success and survival of dental implants in patients, special emphasis should be given on the patient's deleterious oral habits, such as bruxism as in long run, they influence the stability of dental implants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of the current study is to assess which vertical bone augmentation techniques are most effective for restoring atrophic posterior areas of the mandible with dental implants and compare these procedures with alternative treatments. METHODS Electronic literature searches in PubMed (MEDLINE), Ovid, and the Cochrane Library were conducted to identify all relevant articles published up to July 1, 2015. Eligibility was based on inclusion criteria, and quality assessments were conducted. The primary outcome variables were implant and prosthetic failure. After data extraction, meta-analyses were performed. RESULTS Out of 527 potentially eligible papers, 14 randomized clinical trials were included. Out of these 14 studies, four trials assessed short implants (5 to 8 mm) as an alternative to vertical bone augmentation in sites with a residual ridge height of 5 to 8 mm. No statistically significant differences were found in implant (odds ratio [OR]: 1.02; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.31 to 3.31; P = 0.98; I2: 0%) or prosthetic failure (OR: 0.64; 95% CI: 0.21 to 1.96; P = 0.43; I2: 0%) after 12 months of loading. However, complications at treated sites increased with the augmentation procedures (OR: 8.33; 95% CI: 3.85 to 20.0; P <0.001; I2: 0%). There was no evidence of any vertical augmentation procedure being of greater benefit than any other for the primary outcomes (implant and prosthetic failure). CONCLUSIONS Short implants in the posterior area of the mandible seem to be preferable to vertical augmentation procedures, which present similar implant and prosthetic failure rates but greater morbidity. All the vertical augmentation technique comparisons showed similar intergroup results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this questionnaire study was to investigate patient satisfaction 8-14 years after dental implant therapy and complications influencing the degree of satisfaction. MATERIALS AND METHODS A questionnaire was sent by post to 587 patients at a specialist clinic of periodontology. The questionnaire consisted of 19 statements or questions such as the degree of satisfaction with the implants and knowledge of complications. In nine of the questions, respondents were asked to grade the extent of their agreement with a statement by selecting from fixed answers. Three of the questions were designed to be answered using a visual analog scale. RESULTS In total, 400 individuals (81%) responded to the questionnaire. The mean time elapsed since implant installation was 10 years. A great majority (81%) experienced a high chewing comfort and was satisfied or sufficiently satisfied (94%) with the aesthetic aspects of their implant restorations, while 32% of the individuals had experienced problems with their implant reconstructions. The disadvantage that patients remarked on was the cost of the treatment. Those who had experienced problems with their implant reconstructions were also less satisfied with the treatment. CONCLUSION A great majority of the patients expressed a high degree of satisfaction with their dental implants 8-14 years after the treatment. Patients were less satisfied if they had experience of problems with their implant reconstructions and in cases when the clinicians were unable to resolve their complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To the best of the authors' knowledge, there is very limited clinical data on the outcomes of simultaneous guided bone regeneration (GBR) for horizontal and/or vertical bone gain for the reconstruction of severely atrophic edentulous maxilla. Therefore, the purpose of the clinical series presented herein was to clinically evaluate long-term horizontal and vertical bone gain, as well as implant survival rate after reconstruction of severely atrophic edentulous maxillary ridges. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixteen patients (mean age: 64.6 ± 14.6 years of age) were consecutively treated for vertical and/or horizontal bone augmentation via GBR in combination with bilateral sinus augmentation utilizing a mixture of autologous and anorganic bovine bone. Implant survival, bone gain, intraoperative/postoperative complications and peri-implant bone loss were calculated up to the last follow-up exam. RESULTS Overall, 122 dental implants were placed into augmented sites and have been followed from 12 to 180 months (mean: 76.5 months). Implant survival was 100% (satisfactory survival rate of 97.5%). Mean bone gain was 5.6 mm (max: 9 mm; min: 3 mm) While vertical bone gain was 5.1 ± 1.8 mm; horizontal bone gain was 7.0 ± 1.5 mm. No intraoperative/postoperative complications were noted. Mean peri-implant bone loss values were consistent within the standards for implant success (1.4 ± 1.0 mm). At patient-level, only one patient who had three implants presented with severe peri-implant bone loss. CONCLUSION Complete reconstruction of an atrophied maxilla can be successfully achieved by means of guided bone regeneration for horizontal and/or vertical bone gain including bilateral sinus augmentation using a mixture of anorganic bovine bone and autologous bone.

Abstract
Background The existing information on oral rehabilitations with dental implants in VIH-positive patients is scarce and of poor quality. Moreover, no long-term follow-up studies are available. Hence, the aims of this study were to describe the long-term survival and success rates of dental implants in a group of HIV-positive patients and to identify the most common postoperative complications, including peri-implant diseases. Material and Methods A retrospective case series of HIV-positive subjects treated with dental implants at the School of Dentistry of the University of Barcelona (Spain) was studied. Several clinical parameters were registered, including CD4 cell count, viral load and surgical complications. Additionally, the patients were assessed for implant survival and success rates and for the prevalence of peri-implant diseases. A descriptive statistical analysis of the data was performed. Results Nine participants (57 implants) were included. The patients’ median age was 42 years (IQR=13.5 years). The implant survival and success rates were 98.3% and 68.4%, respectively, with a mean follow-up of 77.5 months (SD=16.1 months). The patient-based prevalence of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis were 22.2% and 44.4% respectively at the last appointment. Patients that attended regular periodontal maintenance visits had significantly less mean bone loss than non-compliant patients (1.3 mm and 3.9 mm respectively). Conclusions Oral rehabilitation with dental implants in HIV-positive patients seems to provide satisfactory results. In order to reduce the considerably high prevalence of peri-implant diseases, strict maintenance programmes must be implemented. As titanium (Ti) continues to be utilized in great extent for the fabrication of artificial implants, it is important to understand the crucial bacterium–Ti interaction occurring during the initial phases of biofilm formation. By employing a single-cell force spectroscopy technique, the nanoadhesive interactions between the early-colonizing Streptococcus sanguinis and a clinically analogous smooth Ti substrate were explored. Mean adhesion forces between S. sanguinis and Ti were found to be 0.32±0.00, 1.07±0.06, and 4.85±0.56 nN for 0, 1, and 60 seconds contact times, respectively; while adhesion work values were reported at 19.28±2.38, 104.60±7.02, and 1,317.26±197.69 aJ for 0, 1, and 60 seconds, respectively. At 60 seconds surface delays, minor-rupture events were modeled with the worm-like chain model yielding an average contour length of 668±12 nm. The mean force for S. sanguinis minor-detachment events was 1.84±0.64 nN, and Poisson analysis decoupled this value into a short-range force component of −1.60±0.34 nN and a long-range force component of −0.55±0.47 nN. Furthermore, a solution of 2 mg/mL chlorhexidine was found to increase adhesion between the bacterial probe and substrate. Overall, single-cell force spectroscopy of living S. sanguinis cells proved to be a reliable way to characterize early-bacterial adhesion onto machined Ti implant surfaces at the nanoscale.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to conduct a literature review on the potential benefits with the use of Morse taper dental implant connections associated with small diameter platform switching abutments. A Medline bibliographical search (from 1961 to 2014) was carried out. The following search items were explored: “Bone loss and platform switching,” “bone loss and implant-abutment joint,” “bone resorption and platform switching,” “bone resorption and implant-abutment joint,” “Morse taper and platform switching.” “Morse taper and implant-abutment joint,” Morse taper and bone resorption,” “crestal bone remodeling and implant-abutment joint,” “crestal bone remodeling and platform switching.” The selection criteria used for the article were: meta-analysis; randomized controlled trials; prospective cohort studies; as well as reviews written in English, Portuguese, or Spanish languages. Within the 287 studies identified, 81 relevant and recent studies were selected. Results indicated a reduced occurrence of peri-implantitis and bone loss at the abutment/implant level associated with Morse taper implants and a reduced-diameter platform switching abutment. Extrapolation of data from previous studies indicates that Morse taper connections associated with platform switching have shown less inflammation and possible bone loss with the peri-implant soft tissues. However, more long-term studies are needed to confirm these trends.

Abstract
Background The aim of the present study was to evaluate clinically and radiographically, the efficacy of immediate ridge augmentation to reconstruct the vertical and horizontal dimensions at extraction sites of periodontally hopeless tooth using an autogenous chin block graft. Material and Methods A total of 11 patients (7 male & 4 female) with localized advanced bone loss around single rooted teeth having hopeless prognosis and indicated for extraction were selected for the study. The teeth were atraumatically extracted and deficient sites were augmented using autogenous chin block graft. Parameters like clinically soft tissue height - width and also radiographic ridge height -width were measured before and 6 months after augmentation. Obtained results were tabulated and analysed statistically. Results After 6 months of immediate ridge augmentation, the mean gain in radiographic vertical height and horizontal width was 7.64 + 1.47 mm (P = 0.005) and 5.28 + 0.46 mm (P = 0.007) respectively which was found to be statistically significant (P < 0.05). Mean change of width gain of 0.40mm and height loss of 0.40mm of soft tissue parameters, from the baseline till completion of the study at 6 months was observed. Conclusions The present study showed predictable immediate ridge augmentation with autogenous chin block graft at periodontally compromised extraction site. It can provide adequate hard and soft tissue foundation for perfect 3-Dimensional prosthetic positioning of implant in severely deficient ridges. Abstract
PURPOSE This retrospective study aims at the evaluation of implant-supported overdentures (IODs) supported by ceramo-galvanic double crowns (CGDCs: zirconia primary crowns + galvano-formed secondary crown). MATERIALS AND METHODS In a private practice, 14 patients were restored with 18 IODs (mandible: 11, maxilla: 7) retained by CGDCs on 4 - 8 implants and annually evaluated for technical and/or biological failures/complications. RESULTS One of the 86 inserted implants failed during the healing period (cumulative survival rate (CSR) implants: 98.8%). During the prosthetic functional period (mean: 5.9 ± 2.2 years), 1 implant demonstrated an abutment fracture (CSR-abutments: 98.2%), and one case of peri-implantitis was detected. All IODs remained in function (CSR-denture: 100%). A total of 15 technical complications required interventions to maintain function (technical complication rate: 0.178 treatments/patients/year). CONCLUSION Considering the small sample size, the use of CGDCs for the attachment of IODs is possible without an increased risk of technical complications. However, for a final evaluation, results from a larger cohort are required.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine possible risk factors for postoperative infections after implant surgery, explain their effects on the occurrence of such infections, and assess the relation between postoperative infections and early implant failure. PATIENTS AND METHODS A case-and-control study was performed. Postoperative infections were defined as purulent drainage or fistula in the operated region with pain or tenderness, localized swelling, redness, and heat or fever before prosthetic loading. Bivariate and multivariate analyses of the data were performed. RESULTS Eighty-eight outpatients (22 patients in the infection group and 66 controls) were selected. Male gender and submerged healing were meaningfully associated to the development of postoperative infections (bivariate analysis). Healing type and location were the independent variables included in the final logistic regression model. Postoperative infections during the osseointegration period considerably increased the risk of early failure (odds ratio = 78.0; 95% confidence interval, 9.12 to 666.90). CONCLUSIONS Patients undergoing dental implant placement in the mandible with submerged healing are more prone to postoperative infections. This complication is relevant because it is associated with a considerable and almost 80-fold increase in the risk of early implant failure.

Abstract
The aim of this paper is to describe a case of implant-prosthetic rehabilitation in a patient with periodontitis, focusing on the different timing of implant placement. After initial periodontal treatment, teeth with advanced mobility degree and severe bone resorption were extracted. At different healing time oral implants were placed in a prosthetic-guided position. After osseointegration period the implants were loaded and the results at one year of follow-up are presented.

Abstract
Preclinical research in a sheep tibia model has been conducted to evaluate the underlying mechanisms of the nontraumatic implant explantation of failed implants, which allow placing a new one in the bone bed. Twelve dental implants were placed in sheep diaphysis tibia and once osseointegrated they were explanted using a nontraumatic implant explantation approach. Implant osseointegration and explantation were monitored by means of frequency resonance, removal torque, and angle of rotation measurement. The host bone bed and the explanted implant surface were analyzed by conventional microscopy and scanning electron microscope. Results show that osseointegration was broken with an angular displacement of less than 20°. In this situation the implant returns to implant stability quotient values in the same range of their primary stability. Moreover, the explantation technique causes minimal damage to the surrounding bone structure and cellularity. This nontraumatic approach allows the straightforward replacement of failed implants and emerges as a promising strategy to resolve clinically challenging situations.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The positioning of implants in the jaw bones with contextual graftless lateral approach sinus lifting is finding an increasingly broad consensus in the literature. Since the 1970s, various clinical research projects have been conducted on applications of biological and synthetic biomaterials in bone regenerative surgery, both in sinus lift procedures and in cystic cavity filling after cystectomy or in bone defects in regenerative periodontal surgery. Currently, we are finding that there is an increasing trend of clinicians aiming to adopt graftless techniques, with satisfactory results in terms of implant survival in the long term. In our study, through a case report, we describe a variant of graftless sinus augmentation technique with contextual implant placement, emphasizing the role of the blood clot, combined with collagen sponges, as a natural scaffold and the osteogenic potential of the subantral membrane in guided bone regeneration, with reduced morbidity of the patient. CASE PRESENTATION To describe the surgical technique, the clinical case of a 38-year-old Caucasian woman with a lateral posterior edentulism was selected. The rehabilitation was solved by a graftless sinus augmentation technique with a contextual implant placement. For each implant, a resonance frequency analysis evaluation was reported as implant stability quotient values. The performance of the implant stability quotient values followed a gradual increase from time zero to the sixth month, as the clot was differentiated into osteoid tissue and then into bone tissue, due to the scaffold effect conferred by the equine collagen sponge. The stabilization phase took place between the fourth and the sixth month, according to the implant stability quotient values. CONCLUSIONS Our graftless sinus augmentation technique seems to be very predictable thanks to the osteoconductive principles on which it is based, and in association with the proper management of peri-implant soft tissue, so as to increase the amount of keratinized tissue, which could represent the new gold standard for this type of rehabilitation in the future.

Abstract
AIM To compare clinical and radiographic outcomes of implants with a Laser-Lok®-microtextured collar to implants with a resorbable blast textured (RBT) collar after a 5-year follow-up period. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-four implants with a Laser-Lok®-microtextured collar (test group [TG]) and 31 implants with an RBT collar (control group [CG]) were placed in 45 non-smoking, periodontally healthy patients. The full-mouth plaque score, full-mouth bleeding score, number of sites with plaque, and the number of sites with bleeding on probing (BOP) were recorded at baseline, and at 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-year follow-up. Probing depth (PD) and mucosal recession were assessed at baseline and after the 5-year follow-up period. The radiographic marginal bone loss (MBL) was calculated by subtracting the bone level at the time of crown insertion from the bone level at the 5-year follow-up. RESULTS An implant survival rate of 94% and of 90% was reported for the TG and the CG, respectively. No statistical differences were found between the study groups for presence of plaque (10.1% vs. 25%) or for number of sites with BOP (10.3% vs. 23%). The differences between both study groups were statistically significant for mean MBL (0.81 ± 0.24 vs. 2.02 ± 0.32 mm), mean PD (2.32 ± 0.44 vs. 4.25 ± 0.87 mm), and mean mucosal recession (0.16 ± 0.3 vs. 0.22 ± 0.3 mm). CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of this study, results suggest that the laser-microtextured implant collar surface may provide more favorable conditions for the attachment of hard and soft tissues, and reduce the level of MBL.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this 10-year follow-up study was to evaluate the implant survival and complication rates of fixed restorations supported by locking-taper implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS Over a 10-year period (January 2002 to December 2011) all patients referred to a single private practice for treatment with fixed restorations (single crowns, SCs; fixed partial prostheses, FPPs; fixed full arches, FFAs) supported by dental implants were considered for inclusion in the study. At each annual follow-up session, clinical, radiographic, and prosthetic parameters were assessed. The surviving implant-supported restorations were defined as "complication free" in the absence of any biological or prosthetic (mechanical or technical) complication. The cumulative implant survival and the "complication-free" survival of fixed implant-supported restorations were identified using the Kaplan-Meier method. The Log-rank test was used to identify correlations between the study variables. RESULTS In total, 1494 locking-taper implants (727 maxilla, 767 mandible) were placed in 642 patients (356 males, 286 females). Nineteen implants (12 maxilla, 7 mandible) failed. Implant failures were attributed to lack of osseointegration (14 implants), peri-implantitis (4 implants), and mechanical overloading (1 implant). An overall 10-year cumulative implant survival rate of 98.7% (98.3% maxilla, 99.1% mandible) was found. The implant survival rates did not significantly differ with respect to implant location, position, bone type, implant length and diameter, and type of restorations. Among the surviving implant-supported restorations (478 SC, 242 FPP, 19 FFA), a few biological (11/739: 1.4%) and prosthetic (27/739: 3.6%) complications were reported. The incidence of mechanical complications was low (3/739: 0.4%), with three loosened abutments in three SCs (3/478: 0.6%), and no abutment fractures; technical complications were more frequent (24/739: 3.2%), with an incidence of decementation of 2.0% (SC 2.0%, FPP 1.6%, FFA 5.2%) and ceramic/veneer chipping/fracture of 1.2% (SC 0.0%, FPP 2.8%, FFA 10.5%). A 10-year cumulative "complication-free" survival of restorations of 88.6% (SC 91.7%, FPP 83.1%, FFA 73.8%) was reported. The complication rates differ significantly with respect to the type of restoration (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Fixed restorations on locking-taper implants seem to be a successful procedure for the rehabilitation of partially and completely edentulous arches.

Abstract
UNLABELLED While the clinical science of managing peri-implant diseases is progressing, careful monitoring and preventive care of peri-implant tissue health during maintenance is paramount. BACKGROUND Implants have become a routine treatment option for missing dentition. The biological complications of restored dental implants and associated supra-structures share similarities with the biofilm infections of natural dentition. Our existing paradigms of periodontal disease treatment can partially be applied to management of peri-implant disease. APPROACH A critical analysis of the peri-implant disease literature was conducted, anchored by a search on the MEDLINE database (2005 to present) by way of Ovid Medline(®). Search terms peri-implantitis, peri-implant mucositis and peri-implant diseases were utilized. Select references within bibliographies of review articles were sought. CONCLUSION The dental team must play a critical role in educating patients to control plaque-biofilm associated with peri-implant tissues and associated restorations. Routine assessments at maintenance appointments allow early treatment intervention to prevent escalation of peri-implant disease. Given the infancy of clinical science surrounding peri-implantitis treatment, further, high-quality evidence based studies are expected.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Retrospective evaluation of the biological and technical complications in implant-supported single-tooth molar restorations performed in a private practice after functional periods of ≥4 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty-five patients (34 females, age 51.7 ± 10.6 years) with 112 implants received annual follow-up examinations and participated in a maintenance program. The survival (in situ) and success (complication-free) rates of implants and superstructures were evaluated. Time-dependent peri-implantitis rates were calculated, and the influencing factors were identified using a multiple Cox regression. RESULTS The implant survival rate was 100%. Three of 112 crowns required replacement (prosthetic survival rate = 98.1%). Thirty technical complications were observed: loss of retention (16), ceramic fracture (10), and screw loosening (4). The success rate of the superstructures was 79.0% after 7 years. Overall, 9.2% of the patients developed peri-implantitis (probing depth ≥5 mm, BOP, suppuration, bone loss ≥3.5 mm); (smokers: 41.6%, non-smokers: 1.8%). After 7 years, the time-dependent implant success rate (free of peri-implantitis) was 100% for non-smokers and 58.6% for smokers. Multiple analysis showed a significant effect of smoking (hazard ratio, 19.5; P = 0.008) on peri-implantitis. CONCLUSIONS Implants with cemented single-tooth restorations in the molar region constitute a reliable treatment in private practice. Smokers have a significantly increased peri-implantitis rate.

Abstract
This report describes the case of a patient who underwent osseointegrated dental implant placement. The implants were misplaced inside the nasal fossae and in the right maxillary sinus, causing chronic purulent sinusitis. CT scan without contrast showed signs of right maxillary sinusitis and confirmed the misplacement of four dental implants that surfaced into the nasal cavities. The imaging also revealed the presence of another implant that emerged inside the maxillary sinus. The patient underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery with complete symptom remission at the long-term follow-up. We propose that sinusitis caused by protrusion of implants and by sinus floor lift procedures could share common physiopathological patterns and predisposing factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE To examine the microbial diversity associated with implants with or without peri-implantitis and to identify differences between the bacterial communities in these clinical conditions. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty subjects were assigned to a Control group consisting of subjects with healthy implants and a Test group consisting of subjects with peri-implantitis sites, as well as a healthy implant site (n = 10/group). In the Test group, subgingival biofilm samples were taken from the deepest sites of the diseased implant. In both groups, samples were collected from one site around a healthy implant. DNA was extracted and the 16S rRNA gene was amplified and sequenced, and the phylotypes were identified by comparison with known 16S rRNA sequences. RESULTS The phylogenetic identity of 1387 16S rRNA gene clones was determined. Healthy implants demonstrated higher proportions of Actinomyces, Atopobium, Gemella, Kingella and Rothia and lower levels of Campylobacter, Desulfobulbus, Dialister, Eubacterium, Filifactor, Mitsukella, Porphyromonas and Pseudoramibacter (Mann-Whitney U-test; P < 0.05). Fusobacterium nucleatum, Dialister invisus, Streptococcus sp. human oral taxon (HOT) 064, Filifactor alocis and Mitsuokella sp. HOT 131 presented a higher mean proportion, while Veillonella dispar, Actinomyces meyeri, Granulicatella adiacens showed lower mean proportions in the peri-implantitis sites when compared with healthy implants in both the Control and Test groups (Mann-Whitney U-test; P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Marked differences were observed in the composition of the subgingival biofilm between healthy and diseased implants. The biofilm associated with peri-implantitis harbored more pathogenic bacterial species from the orange complex and other "unusual" putative pathogens, such as F. alocis, D. invisus and Mitsuokella sp. HOT 131.

Abstract
Implant treatment has become the treatment of choice to replace missing teeth in partially edentulous areas. Dental implants present different biological and biomechanical characteristics than natural teeth. Occlusion is considered to be one of the most important factors contributing to implant success. Most literature on implant occlusal concepts is based on expert opinion, anecdotal experiences, in vitro and animal studies, and only limited clinical research. Furthermore, scientific literature regarding implant occlusion, particularly in implant-supported fixed dental prostheses remains controversial. In this study, the current status of implant occlusion was reviewed and discussed. Further randomized clinical research to investigate the correlation between implant occlusion, the implant success rate, and its risk factors is warranted to determine best clinical practices.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among subjects who received implant-supported crowns (ISC) and 2-unit cantilevered resin-bonded bridges (cRBB) in a bounded single tooth space (BSTS) after at least 5 years and to investigate factors associated with their OHRQoL. METHODS A case-control study among 78 subjects who received ISC or cRBB rehabilitation at a teaching hospital (39 ISCs and 39 cRBBs). OHRQoL was measured using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-49) and compared between treatment modality. Variations in OHIP scores with respect to "minor complications" (repair of the original "survived" restorations) and "major complications" (replacement of "failed" restorations); and number of complications were determined in bivariate and multivariate analyses (negative binominal regression) controlling for socio-demographic and clinical factors. RESULTS Oral Health Impact Profile scores were similar among those who received ISC and cRBB (P = 0.53). Among subjects with complicated restorations, those with major complications reported significantly higher OHIP scores (poorer OHRQoL) than those with minor complications (P = 0.02). Subjects who experienced multiple complications had significantly higher OHIP scores (poorer OHRQoL) than those with a single complication (P = 0.04). In regression analyses (which considered OHIP scores of those with complications), the nature of complications (P < 0.01), treatment modality (P = 0.04), and gender (P = 0.02) emerged as significant factors. CONCLUSION In the rehabilitation of a BSTS patients, OHRQoL was similar irrespective of treatment modality (ISC or cRBB). Among those who experienced complications their OHRQoL was associated with the nature of complications, treatment modality and gender.
