Extended 2,2'-Bipyrroles: New Monomers for Conjugated Polymers with Tailored Processability

The synthesis of 2,2′-bipyrroles substituted at positions 5,5′ with pyrrolyl, N-methyl-pyrrolyl and thienyl groups and their application in the preparation of conducting polymers is reported herein. The preparation of these monomers consisted of two synthetic steps from a functionalized 2,2′-bipyrrole: Bromination of the corresponding 2,2′-bipyrrole followed by Suzuki or Stille couplings. These monomers display low oxidation potential compared to pyrrole because of the extended length of their conjugation pathway. The resulting monomers can be polymerized through oxidative/electropolymerization. Electrical conductivity and electrochromic properties of the electrodeposited polymeric films were evaluated using 4-point probe measurements and cyclic voltammetry to evaluate their applicability in electronics.

High residue bio-based structural–functional integration epoxy and intrinsic flame retardant mechanism study

Research on structural–functional integration of polymers has become an inevitable trend and development orientation in modern materials science. An intrinsic flame-retardant epoxy with superior mechanical properties and reusability is of great application value as a composite matrix and structural material. We newly synthesized two bio-based epoxy resins, VSE and VDE, the Young's modulus of product cured by DDM (4,4-diaminodiphenyl methane) achieve 5013 MPa and 4869 MPa, respectively. The LOI values of VSE and VDE were 38.7% and 34.5% respectively and both meet UL-94 V-0 rating. High char residue at 800 °C (34.5% and 28.0%, respectively) means a superior thermal stability which conventional epoxies are unreachable. Besides, cured VDE have convenient processability which can be re-shape as heating up and retain complete structural performance after cooling to room temperature. Furthermore, thermogravimetric analysis coupled with infrared spectroscopy (TGA-IR) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used to assist scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to investigate the intrinsic flame-retardant mechanism. In this work, the effect and process of nitrogen–phosphorus synergy on flame retardant is revealed finally. These results indicate the newly prepared epoxy has excellent flame retardancy, mechanical properties and recyclability which opens new possibilities in practical applications of epoxy such as coatings, potting or composite matrix in the near future.

Urchin-like NiO-NiCo2O4 heterostructure microsphere catalysts for enhanced rechargeable non-aqueous Li-O2 batteries

Urchin-like NiO-NiCo2O4 microspheres with heterostructures were successfully synthesized through a facile hydrothermal method, followed by thermal treatment. The unique structure of NiO-NiCo2O4 with the synergetic effect between NiCo2O4 and NiO, and the heterostructure favour the catalytic activity towards Li-O2 batteries. NiCo2O4 is helpful for boosting both the oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction for the Li-O2 batteries and NiO is likely to promote the decomposition of certain by-products. The special urchin-like morphology facilitates the continuous oxygen flow and accommodates Li2O2. Moreover, benefitting from the heterostructure, NiO-NiCo2O4 microspheres are able to promote the transport of Li ions and electrons to further improve battery performance. Li-O2 batteries utilizing a NiO-NiCo2O4 microsphere electrode show a much higher specific capacity and a lower overpotential than those with a Super P electrode. Moreover, they exhibit an enhanced cycling stability. The electrode can be continuously discharged and charged without obvious terminal voltage variation for 80 cycles, as the discharge capacity is restricted at 600 mA h g-1, suggesting that NiO-NiCo2O4 is a promising catalyst for Li-O2 batteries.
