Finger agnosia and cognitive deficits in patients with Alzheimer's disease

The purpose of this study was to examine the presence of finger agnosia in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and to determine if level of finger agnosia was related to cognitive impairment. Finger agnosia is a sensitive measure of cerebral impairment and is associated with neurofunctional areas implicated in AD. Using a standardized and norm-referenced approach, results indicated that patients with AD evidenced significantly decreased performance on tests of bilateral finger agnosia compared with healthy age-matched controls. Finger agnosia was predictive of cognitive dysfunction on four of seven domains, including: Crystallized Language, Fluid Processing, Associative Learning, and Processing Speed. Results suggest that measures of finger agnosia, a short and simple test, may be useful in the early detection of AD.

Are there volumetric brain differences associated with the use of cocaine and amphetamine-type stimulants?

While a large number of studies have examined brain volume differences associated with cocaine use, much less is known about structural differences related to amphetamine-type stimulant (ATS) use. What is known about cocaine may help to interpret emerging information on the interaction of brain volume with ATS consumption. To date, volumetric studies on the two types of stimulant have focused almost exclusively on brain differences associated with chronic use. There is considerable variability in the findings between studies which may be explained in part by the wide variety of methodologies employed. Despite this variability, seven recurrent themes are worth noting: (1) loci of lower cortical volume (approximately 10% on average) are consistently reported, (2) almost all studies indicate less volume in all or parts of the frontal cortex, (3) more specifically, a core group of studies implicate the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (including the medial portion of the orbital frontal cortex) and (4) the insula, (5) an enlarged striatal volume has been repeatedly observed, (6) reports on volume differences in the hippocampus and amygdala have been equivocal, (7) evidence supporting differential interaction of brain structure with cocaine vs. ATS is scant but the volume of all or parts of the temporal cortex appear lower in a majority of studies on cocaine but not ATS. Future research should include longitudinal designs on larger sample sizes and examine other stages of exposure to psychostimulants.

Neuropsychological consequences of traumatic brain injury in children and adolescents

The study of the relationship between neuroscientific information and cognitive function and dysfunction is clearly a widely expanding field. In particular, there has been a growing body of research on traumatic brain injury (TBI) in children and adolescents. This article conveys recent findings concerning cognitive outcomes, with a particular focus on age differences with TBI, suggests a relationship between specific learning disorders and brain dysfunction, addresses differential hemisphere functioning with TBI, and alludes to recent developments in assessment of TBI.

Hemispheric differences for P300 amplitude from an auditory oddball task

The P3(00) event-related potential (ERP) was elicited in 80 normal, right-handed male subjects using a simple auditory stimulus discrimination task, with electroencephalographic (EEG) activity recorded at 19 electrodes. P300 amplitude was larger over the right compared to left hemisphere electrode sites primarily at anterior-medial locations (F3/4, C3/4) for both target and standard stimuli. The N100, P200, and N200 components also demonstrated several similar, albeit less robust, hemispheric asymmetries. No hemispheric effects for P300 latency were observed, with few consistent latency findings for any of the other components obtained. The results suggest that the discrimination process underlying P300 generation may originate with right frontal activation.

P3 amplitude was larger over the right than over the left hemisphere electrode sites primarily at anteromedial locations (F3/4, C3/4) for target, novel, and standard stimuli. The N1, P2, and N2 components also demonstrated hemispheric asymmetries. The strongest P3 hemispheric asymmetries for all stimuli were observed at anterior locations, suggesting a frontal right hemisphere localization for initial stimulus processing, although target stimuli produced larger P3 amplitudes at parietal locations that did novel stimuli. The relationships of hemispheric asymmetries to anatomical variables, background EEG activity, and neurocognitive factors are discussed.
