Nanowire Genome: A Magic Toolbox for 1D Nanostructures

Direct coating of gold nanolayers to enhance the oxidation resistance of copper nanowire flexible transparent conductive films

Copper nanowire-based transparent conductive films have garnered extensive attention owing to their cost-effectiveness and comparable electrical properties. However, the inherent instability of copper nanowires (Cu NWs) has curtailed their extensive utility and applicability. Herein, we present durable Cu@Au NW/PET films exhibiting elevated photoelectric attributes and remarkable flexibility. After preparing Cu NWs, the purification operation allows the purity of the Cu NWs to reach about 98%. Subsequently, Cu@Au NWs/PET flexible transparent conductive films (FTCFs) were prepared through vacuum filtration of Cu NWs and direct treatment with chloroauric acid. The resulting Cu@Au NW-based FTCFs exhibit impressive attributes including a low sheet resistance of 30 ohms per square and a high optical transmittance of 90%, resulting in an exceptional figure of merit (FOM) of 99. Remarkably, the Cu@Au NWs/PET film showed remarkable flexibility, retaining its properties after 10 000 cycles of continuous bending. Stability assessments further affirm the sheet resistance of the Cu@Au NW FTCFs remains nearly unchanged over 75 days at ambient temperature. The strategic integration of a gold nanolayer, serving as a protective coating on the Cu NWs, yields substantial enhancements in both electrical conductivity and overall stability within the Cu NW FTCF architecture. Furthermore, the obtained Cu@Au NW films exhibit rapid heating capabilities, reaching a temperature of 67 °C within 30 seconds at 3.5 V and subsequently returning to room temperature at the same rate. In summary, the introduction of a Au protective layer can effectively enhance the oxidation resistance of Cu NWs, which has great application potential in FTCFs in the field of film heaters.

Layer-Structured Anisotropic Metal Chalcogenides: Recent Advances in Synthesis, Modulation, and Applications

The unique electronic and catalytic properties emerging from low symmetry anisotropic (1D and 2D) metal chalcogenides (MCs) have generated tremendous interest for use in next generation electronics, optoelectronics, electrochemical energy storage devices, and chemical sensing devices. Despite many proof-of-concept demonstrations so far, the full potential of anisotropic chalcogenides has yet to be investigated. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the recent progress made in the synthesis, mechanistic understanding, property modulation strategies, and applications of the anisotropic chalcogenides. It begins with an introduction to the basic crystal structures, and then the unique physical and chemical properties of 1D and 2D MCs. Controlled synthetic routes for anisotropic MC crystals are summarized with example advances in the solution-phase synthesis, vapor-phase synthesis, and exfoliation. Several important approaches to modulate dimensions, phases, compositions, defects, and heterostructures of anisotropic MCs are discussed. Recent significant advances in applications are highlighted for electronics, optoelectronic devices, catalysts, batteries, supercapacitors, sensing platforms, and thermoelectric devices. The article ends with prospects for future opportunities and challenges to be addressed in the academic research and practical engineering of anisotropic MCs.

Polarity-Reversible Te/WSe2 van der Waals Heterodiode for a Logic Rectifier and Polarized Short-Wave Infrared Photodetector

As a p-type elemental material with high carrier mobility, superior ambient stability, and anisotropic crystal structure, emerging two-dimensional (2D) tellurium (Te) has been considered a successor to black phosphorus for developing infrared-related optoelectronics. Nevertheless, the lack of a scalable thickness engineering strategy remains an obstacle to unleashing its full potential. Te-based electronics with logic functions are also less explored. Herein, we propose a novel wet-chemical thinning method for 2D Te, with the merits of scalability and site-specific thickness patterning capability. A polarity-switchable van der Waals (vdW) heterodiode with a high rectification ratio of 2.4 × 10³ is realized on the basis of Te/WSe₂. The electronic application of this unique characteristic is demonstrated by fabricating a logic half-wave rectifier, in which the rectifying states are switchable via electrostatic gating control. Besides, the narrow band gap of Te endows the device with a broad spectral response from visible to short-wave infrared. The room-temperature responsivity reaches 5.2 A W^-1 at the telecom wavelength of 1.55 μm, with an external quantum efficiency of 420% and detectivity of 6.8 × 10⁹ Jones. In particular, owing to the intrinsic in-plane anisotropy of Te, the device exhibits a favorable photocurrent anisotropic ratio of ∼3. Our study demonstrates the enormous potential of Te for novel electronics, promoting the development of elemental 2D materials.

Solution-processed thickness engineering of tellurene for field-effect transistors and polarized infrared photodetectors

Research on elemental 2D materials has been experiencing a renaissance in the past few years. Of particular interest is tellurium (Te), which possesses many exceptional properties for nanoelectronics, photonics, and beyond. Nevertheless, the lack of a scalable approach for the thickness engineering and the local properties modulation remains a major obstacle to unleashing its full device potential. Herein, a solution-processed oxidative etching strategy for post-growth thickness engineering is proposed by leveraging the moderate chemical reactivity of Te. Large-area ultrathin nanosheets with well-preserved morphologies could be readily obtained with appropriate oxidizing agents, such as HNO₂, H₂O₂, and KMnO₄. Compared with the conventional physical thinning approaches, this method exhibits critical merits of high efficiency, easy scalability, and the capability of site-specific thickness patterning. The thickness reduction leads to substantially improved gate tunability of field-effect transistors with an enhanced current switching ratio of ∼10³, promoting the applications of Te in future logic electronics. The response spectrum of Te phototransistors covers the full range of short-wave infrared wavelength (1–3 μm), and the room-temperature responsivity and detectivity reach 0.96 AW^-1 and 2.2 × 10⁹ Jones at the telecom wavelength of 1.55 μm, together with a favorable photocurrent anisotropic ratio of ∼2.9. Our study offers a new approach to tackling the thickness engineering issue for solution-grown Te, which could help realize the full device potential of this emerging p-type 2D material.

Self-Assembly of Nanowires: From Dynamic Monitoring to Precision Control

ConspectusNatural biomaterials often show ordered nanowire structures (ONWS) which display unique structural color or superior mechanical performance. Meanwhile, plenty of modern nanodevices with ONWS have flourished with activities focused on both basic and applied research. Manipulating synthetic nanowire (NW) from a disordered state to a hierarchically ordered structure via various assembly strategies brings about intriguing and exotic chemical/physical properties. In the past decades, many methods have been developed to assemble NWs and fabricate organized architectures, such as Langmuir-Blodgett interfacial assembly, spin-coating assembly, fluid-flow-induced assembly, and ice-template assembly. Nevertheless, for practical applications, large-scale and high-efficiency assembly strategies toward precise controlled architectures are largely limited by the lack understanding of assembly mechanisms. Especially, the manipulation principles and driving forces behind the state-of-art assembly strategies are still unclear. Besides, the lesser research attention on dynamic kinetics also impedes the revelation of the NW self-assembly mechanism. With the emergence of advanced in situ techniques, such as synchrotron-based X-ray techniques and in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the dynamic monitoring of NW behavior in many practical environments becomes possible. In addition, the alignment direction and the stacking manner of NW film are of significance to the final performance. There is a lack of connection between the properties of one-dimensional nanoscale building blocks and the functionalities of the macro-assembly structures. To this end, dynamic monitoring is highly desired, which enables the precision modulation of NW assembly structure, leading to the discovery or prediction of new structures, novel properties, and performance optimization.In this Account, we aim to uncover the underlying kinetics of NW assembly or local reaction and mass transportation processes, as well as to build a solid connection from individual NWs to NW assembly structures with enhanced properties and eventually to macroscopic materials application. We first review the recent progress in state-of-art NW assembly strategies for diverse aligned structures according to the manipulation principle and the driving forces. To systematically review the NW self-assembly strategies, we categorize these strategies into three states: NWs on the liquid interface via surface tension, NW assembly in liquid via solution-shearing flow field, and NW assembly at the solid interval via physical repulsive force. Then, we introduce the existing advanced characterization techniques, including synchrotron-based X-ray scattering and in situ TEM, to dynamically monitor the intermediate states of the NW assembly and transport processes. The comprehensive understanding of this thermodynamic and kinetic mechanism facilitates the rational design, large scale, and high-efficiency fabrication of NW assemblies, thus promoting their applications in tailored optical-electrical electronics, smart electrochromic devices, electrocatalysis, structural materials, and chiral photonic crystals.

Dynamic Pt-OH-·H2O-Ag species mediate coupled electron and proton transfer for catalytic hydride reduction of 4-nitrophenol at the confined nanoscale interface

Generally, the catalytic transformation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) at heterogeneous metal surfaces follows a Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism when sodium borohydride (NaBH₄) is used as the sacrificial reductant. Herein, with Pt-Ag bimetallic nanoparticles confined in dendritic mesoporous silica nanospheres (DMSNs) as a model catalyst, we demonstrated that the conversion of 4-NP did not pass through the direct hydrogen transfer route with the hydride equivalents being supplied by borohydride via the bimolecular L-H mechanism, since Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy with the use of isotopically labeled reactants (NaBD₄ and D₂O) showed that the final product of 4-AP was composed of protons (or deuterons) that originated from the solvent water (or heavy water). Combined characterization by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and the optical excitation and photoluminescence spectrum evidenced that the surface hydrous hydroxide complex bound to the metal surface (also called structural water molecules, SWs), due to the space overlap of p orbitals of two O atoms in SWs, could form an ensemble of dynamic interface transient states, which provided the alternative electron and proton transfer channels for selective transformation of 4-NP. The cationic Pt species in the Ag-Pt bimetallic catalyst mainly acts as a dynamic adsorption center to temporally anchor SWs and related reactants, and not as the active site for hydrogen activation.

Telluride Nanocrystals with Adjustable Amorphous Shell Thickness and Core-Shell Structure Modulation by Aqueous Cation Exchange

Engineering the structure of core-shell colloidal semiconductor nanoparticles (CSNPs) is attractive due to the potential to enhance photo-induced charge transfer and induce favorable optical and electronic properties. Nonetheless, the sensitivity of telluride CSNPs to high temperatures makes it challenging to precisely modulate their surface crystallinity. Herein, we have developed an efficient strategy for synthesizing telluride CSNPs with thin amorphous shells using aqueous cation exchange (ACE). By changing the synthesis temperature in the range of 40-110 °C, the crystallinity of the CdTe nanoparticles was controllable from perfect crystals with no detectable amorphous shell (c-CdTe) to a core-shell structure with a crystalline CdTe NP core covered by an amorphous shell of tunable thickness up to 7-8 nm (c@a-CdTe). A second ACE step transformed c@a-CdTe to crystalline CdTe@HgTe core-shell NPs. The c@a-CdTe nanoparticles synthesized at 60 °C and having a 4-5 nm thick amorphous shell exhibited the highest surface-enhanced Raman scattering activity with a high enhancement factor around 8.82 × 10⁵, attributed to the coupling between the amorphous shell and the crystalline core.

Carbon-coated MoS1.5Te0.5 nanocables for efficient sodium-ion storage in non-aqueous dual-ion batteries

Sodium-based dual-ion batteries have received increased attention owing to their appealing cell voltage (i.e., >3 V) and cost-effective features. However, the development of high-performance anode materials is one of the key elements for exploiting this electrochemical energy storage system at practical levels. Here, we report a source-template synthetic strategy for fabricating a variety of nanowire-in-nanotube MS_xTe_y@C (M = Mo, W, Re) structures with an in situ-grown carbon film coating, termed as nanocables. Among the various materials prepared, the MoS_1.5Te_0.5@C nanocables are investigated as negative electrode active material in combination with expanded graphite at the positive electrode and NaPF₆-based non-aqueous electrolyte solutions for dual-ion storage in coin cell configuration. As a result, the dual-ion lab-scale cells demonstrate a prolonged cycling lifespan with 97% capacity retention over 1500 cycles and a reversible capacity of about 101 mAh g⁻¹ at specific capacities (based on the mass of the anode) of 1.0 A g⁻¹ and 5.0 A g⁻¹, respectively.

Sodium-based dual-ion batteries are promising electrochemical energy storage devices. Here, the authors report a source-template synthetic strategy to prepare carbon-coated MoS_1.5Te_0.5 nanocables and their use as anode active materials in Na-based dual ion cells.

Nanomaterials: Synthesis and Applications in Theranostics

Nanomaterials are endowed with unique features and essential properties suitable for employing in the field of nanomedicine. The nanomaterials can be classified as 0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D based on their dimensions. The nanomaterials can be malleable and ductile and they can be drawn into wires and sheets. Examples of nanomaterials are quantum dots (0D), nanorods, nanowires (1D), nanosheets (2D), and nanocubes (3D). These nanomaterials can be synthesized using top-down and bottom-up approaches. The achievements of 0D and 1D nanomaterials are used to detect trace heavy metal (e.g., Pb2+) and have higher sensitivity with the order of five as compared to conventional sensors. The achievements of 2D and 3D nanomaterials are used as diagnostic and therapeutic agents with multifunctional ability in imaging systems such as PET, SPECT, etc. These imaging modalities can be used to track the drug in living tissues. This review comprises the state-of-the-art of the different dimensions of the nanomaterials employed in theranostics. The nanomaterials with different dimensions have unique physicochemical properties that can be utilized for therapy and diagnosis. The multifunctional ability of the nanomaterials can have a distinct advantage that is used in the field of theranostics. Different dimensions of the nanomaterials would have more scope in the field of nanomedicine.

One-dimensional cobalt oxide nanotubes with rich defect for oxygen evolution reaction

For the electrochemcial hydrogen production, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a pivotal half-reaction in water splitting. However, OER suffers sluggish kinetics and high overpotential, leading to the increase of overall energy consumption and decrease of the energy efficiency. In this work, high-quality cobalt oxide porous nanotubes (Co₃O₄-PNTs) are easily obtained by simple self-template approach. One-dimensional (1D) porous structure provides the large specific surface area, enough abundant active atoms and effective mass transfer. In addition, Co₃O₄-PNTs also own self-stability of 1D architecture, benefitting the their durability for electrocatalytic reaction. Thus, Co₃O₄-PNTs with optimal annealing temperature and time reveal the attractive alkaline OER performance (Tafel slope of 56 mV dec^-1and 323 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm^-2), which outperform the Co₃O₄nanoparticles and benchmark commercial RuO₂nanoparticles. Furthermore, Co₃O₄-PNTs also exhibit excellent OER durability for least 10 h at the 10 mA cm^-2. Overall, Co₃O₄-PNTs with low cost can be serve as a highly reactive and economical catalyst for OER.

Rich grain boundaries endow networked PdSn nanowires with superior catalytic properties for alcohol oxidation

Networked nanowire (NNW)-structured catalysts have attracted extensive attention due to their large surface area and structural stability, which mean that they have excellent catalytic activity and stability and can be used as anode reaction catalysts for use in direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs). Herein, a series of networked PdSn nanowires synthesized via a modified polyol strategy are used as efficient DAFCs anode reaction catalysts. The introduction of Sn plays an important role in the improvement of catalytic behavior, in which the existence of Sn promotes the oxidation of intermediates by providing abundant oxyphilic species. Moreover, the generated PdSn NNWs-3 with optimal content show rich grain boundaries and an even NNW structure, which provides more active sites to further improve catalytic performance, so it exhibits excellent activity toward alcohol oxidation. The mass activities of PdSn NNWs-3 toward the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) and the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) are 8105.0 and 3099.5 mA mg_Pd^-1, which are 6.9 and 10.7 times higher than those of Pd/C, respectively. Compared with Pd/C, the PdSn NNWs also display enhanced stability towards the EOR and MOR. This work demonstrates that NNW nanocatalysts indeed exhibit excellent catalytic performance for alcohol oxidation reactions.

A Metallic Ion-Induced Self-Assembly Enabling Nanowire-Based Aerogels

The controlled assembly of nanowires is one of the key challenges in the development of a range of functional 3D aerogels with unique physicochemical properties for practical applications. However, the deep understanding of the dynamic assemble process for fabricating nanowire aerogels remains elusive. Herein, a facile strategy is presented for the metallic ion-induced assembly of nanowires into macroscopic aerogels via a solution-based process. This method enables the interconnecting between polymer-decorated nanowires via metallic coordination, resulting in plenty of nanowire bundles with the same orientation. Besides, the coordinated binding strength of nanowires with different metallic ions is also discussed. The assembly mechanism that the metallic ions induced dynamic behavior of nanowires is revealed via molecular dynamics theoretical evaluation. These findings benefit for constructing nanowire-based aerogels with unique structural features and multi-function, which pave new opportunities for other material systems.

The alloying-induced electrical conductivity of metal-chalcogenolate nanowires

Alloying is one of the most effective strategies to change the properties of inorganic-organic hybrid materials, but there are few reports of the alloying of one-dimensional nanowires with precise atomic structure due to the difficulties in obtaining the single crystals of nanowires themselves. Herein, we describe the synthesis and characterization of an alloyed one-dimensional Ag-Cu nanowire [Ag_2.5Cu_1.5(S-Adm)₄]_n. Compared with the unalloyed [Ag₄(S-Adm)₄]_n, our novel alloyed nanowire exhibits good conductivity, and its resistivity (as a powder) was determined to be 107 Ω m by impedance analysis-consistent with that of a semiconductor. Accordingly, based on these properties combined with its excellent thermal stability and high-yielding, gram-scale synthesis, [Ag_2.5Cu_1.5(S-Adm)₄]_n is proposed for electronic-device applications.

Ultrathin and Wavy PdB Alloy Nanowires with Controlled Surface Defects for Enhanced Ethanol Oxidation Electrocatalysis

Engineering crystalline structures/defects and elemental compositions is synthetically critical to optimize surface features of noble metal nanocrystals and thus improve their catalytic performances in various reactions. In this manuscript, we report a facile one-step aqueous synthesis of one-dimensional (1D) noble metal-metalloid alloy nanowires (NWs) with an ultrathin and wavy morphology, controlled crystalline defects, and binary PdB compositions as a highly efficient catalyst toward the electrochemical ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). We show that the utilization of hexadecylpyridinium chloride as functional surfactant is of great importance to confine in-the-columnar epitaxial nucleation of anisotropic ultrathin PdB NWs, while the attachment growth precisely controls their surface crystalline defects with a wavy morphology. Meanwhile, this strategy is synthetically universal and can be readily extended to engineer an ultrathin wavy morphology and crystalline defect of ternary PdMB (M = Cu and Pt) alloy NWs. Owing to multiple structural and compositional merits, resultant PdB alloy NWs synergistically expose more electrocatalytically active sites and also kinetically accelerate the removal of CO-related poisons, remarkably improving electrocatalytic EOR activity and stability compared to their counterpart catalysts. Besides, wavy PdB alloy NWs are also electrochemically more active for electrocatalytic oxidation of other alcohols (methanol, glycerol, and glucose). The findings reported here thus shed a bright light on rational design of the high-performance metal alloy catalysts for their potential applications in fine chemical synthesis, fuel cells, and beyond.

Ultrasmall Ag2Te Quantum Dots with Rapid Clearance for Amplified Computed Tomography Imaging and Augmented Photonic Tumor Hyperthermia

With the fast development of nanomedicine, the imaging-guided and photo-induced cancer monotherapies can efficiently eliminate tumor lesions, which are strongly dependent on the construction of versatile theranostic nanoplatforms. Among diverse photo-converting nanoplatforms, silver chalcogenide nanoparticles feature high biocompatibility, narrow band gaps, and tunable optical properties, yet Ag₂Te-based nanosystems are still at a proof-of-concept stage, and the exploration of Ag₂Te-based nanosystems suitable for photonic tumor hyperthermia is challenging. Herein, we report on the construction of versatile ultrasmall Ag₂Te quantum dots (QDs) via a facile biomineralization strategy. Especially, these Ag₂Te QDs with negligible toxicity and excellent biocompatibility were developed for X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging-guided photonic tumor hyperthermia by near-infrared (NIR) activation. The fabricated Ag₂Te QDs exhibited a high tumor suppression rate (94.3%) on 4T1 breast tumor animal models due to the high photothermal-conversion efficiency (50.5%). Mechanistically, Ag₂Te QDs were promising potential CT imaging agents for imaging guidance and monitoring during photonic hyperthermia. Importantly, Ag₂Te QDs were rapidly eliminated from the body via feces and urine because of their ultrasmall sizes. This work not only broadens the biomedical applications of silver chalcogenide-based theranostic nanosystems but also provides the paradigm of theranostic nanosystems with a photonic tumor hyperthermia effect and outstanding contrast enhancement of high-performance CT imaging.

Rapid synthesis of ultra-long silver nanowires for high performance transparent electrodes

By using 1,2-propanediol instead of the classic polyol solvent, ethylene glycol, ultra-long silver nanowires are obtained in only 1 h. These nanowires lead to transparent electrodes with a sheet resistance of 5 Ohms per sq at a transparency of 94%, one of the highest figures of merit for nanowire electrodes ever reported.

Interlaced Pd-Ag nanowires rich in grain boundary defects for boosting oxygen reduction electrocatalysis

Given the high cost and poisoning issues of Pt, developing Pd-based catalysts as substitutes is highly essential. Although substantial progress has been made, the synthesis of Pd-based electrocatalysts with both high activity and stability in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remains a challenge. In this work, we prepared Pd-Ag nanowires with up to micro-sized length and a diameter of ∼17 nm via a facile modified polyol method. The obtained Pd-Ag nanowires (NWs) exhibit interlaced features and are rich in grain boundary defects. Due to the continuous grain boundaries in the one-dimensional (1D) structure and the optimized composition, the synthesized Pd1Ag1 NWs show half-wave potential of 0.897 V and mass activity of 0.103 A mg-1 in alkaline media toward ORR, higher than those of both state-of-the-art Pt/C and other Pd-Ag counterparts. Significantly, after stability tests over 5000 cycles, Pd1Ag1 NWs shows a 2 mV positive shift, much better than that of Pt/C, exhibiting striking stability for ORR. This work may provide an avenue to construct advanced catalysts by surface defect engineering.
