Solution-Processed Flexible Temperature Sensor Array for Highly Resolved Spatial Temperature and Tactile Mapping Using ESN-Based Data Interpolation

High-performance flexible temperature sensors are crucial in various technological applications, such as monitoring environmental conditions and human healthcare. The ideal characteristics of these sensors for stable temperature monitoring include scalability, mechanical flexibility, and high sensitivity. Moreover, simplicity and low power consumption will be essential for temperature sensor arrays in future integrated systems. This study introduces a solution-based approach for creating a V2O5 nanowire network temperature sensor on a flexible film. Through optimization of the fabrication conditions, the sensor exhibits remarkable performance, sustaining long-term stability (>110 h) with minimal hysteresis and excellent sensitivity (∼-1.5%/°C). In addition, this study employs machine learning techniques for data interpolation among sensors, thereby enhancing the spatial resolution of temperature measurements and adding tactile mapping without increasing the sensor count. Introducing this methodology results in an improved understanding of temperature variations, advancing the capabilities of flexible-sensor arrays for various applications.

Mid-infrared Imaging Using Strain-Relaxed Ge1-xSnx Alloys Grown on 20 nm Ge Nanowires

Germanium-tin (Ge1-xSnx) semiconductors are a front-runner platform for compact mid-infrared devices due to their tunable narrow bandgap and compatibility with silicon processing. However, their large lattice parameter has been a major hurdle, limiting the quality of epitaxial layers grown on silicon or germanium substrates. Herein, we demonstrate that 20 nm Ge nanowires (NWs) act as effective compliant substrates to grow extended defect-free Ge1-xSnx alloys with a composition uniformity over several micrometers along the NW growth axis without significant buildup of the compressive strain. Ge/Ge1-xSnx core/shell NWs with Sn content spanning the 6-18 at. % range are achieved and processed into photoconductors exhibiting a high signal-to-noise ratio at room temperature with a cutoff wavelength in the 2.0-3.9 μm range. The processed NW devices are integrated in an uncooled imaging setup enabling the acquisition of high-quality images under both broadband and laser illuminations at 1550 and 2330 nm without the lock-in amplifier technique.

Structural and chemical properties of anion exchanged CsPb(Br(1-x)Clx)3heterostructured perovskite nanowires imaged by nanofocused x-rays

Over the last years metal halide perovskites have demonstrated remarkable potential for integration in light emitting devices. Heterostructures allow for tunable bandgap depending on the local anion composition, crucial for optoelectronic devices, but local structural effects of anion exchange in single crystals is not fully understood. Here, we investigate how the anion exchange of CsPbBr3nanowires fully and locally exposed to HCl vapor affects the local crystal structure, using nanofocused x-rays. We study the nanoscale composition and crystal structure as function of HCl exposure time and demonstrate the correlation of anion exchange with changes in the lattice parameter. The local composition was measured by x-ray fluorescence and x-ray diffraction, with general agreement of both methods but with much less variation using latter. The heterostructured nanowires exhibit unintentional gradients in composition, both axially and radially. Ferroelastic domains are observed for all HCl exposure times, and the magnitude of the lattice tilt at the domain walls scales with the Cl concentration.

Composition and optical properties of (In, Ga)As nanowires grown by group-III-assisted molecular beam epitaxy

(In, Ga) alloy droplets are used to catalyse the growth of (In, Ga)As nanowires by molecular beam epitaxy on Si(111) substrates. The composition, morphology and optical properties of these nanowires can be tuned by the employed elemental fluxes. To incorporate more than 10% of In, a high In/(In+Ga) flux ratio above 0.7 is required. We report a maximum In content of almost 30% in bulk (In, Ga)As nanowires for an In/(In+Ga) flux ratio of 0.8. However, with increasing In/(In+Ga) flux ratio, the nanowire length and diameter are notably reduced. Using photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence spectroscopy on nanowires covered by a passivating (In, Al)As shell, two luminescence bands are observed. A significant segment of the nanowires shows homogeneous emission, with a wavelength corresponding to the In content in this segment, while the consumption of the catalyst droplet leads to a spectrally-shifted emission band at the top of the nanowires. The (In,Ga)As nanowires studied in this work provide a new approach for the integration of infrared emitters on Si platforms.

Robust ZTO reinforced AgNW hybrid transparent conductive thin films with absorption-enhanced EMI shielding property

Evolving technology advancements has accelerated the pursuit of transparent conducting thin films (TCF) with superior mechanical properties, durability, efficient opto-electrical performance and substrate compatibility as a pivotal focus in the realm of flexible transparent electronics. With this concern, this work delves the fabrication of multilayer silver nanowire (AgNW) thin films reinforced by zinc tin oxide (ZTO) thin film encapsulation on polycarbonate substrates by the combination of sputtering and spin-coating techniques. Investigation on the influence of AgNW percolation networks on the opto-electrical properties of ZTO/AgNW/ZTO hybrid thin films was carried out. The impact of ZTO protective layers on the enhancement of electrical properties, adhesivity, flexibility and environmental stability of the multilayer TCF was elucidated. Additionally, to explore the compatibility of the fabricated TCF in integrated device and stealth applications, its electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding property was investigated. The hybrid TCF showed 99.47% EMI shielding efficiency with absorption-dominant EMI shielding effectiveness of 22.7 dB in the x-band region. .

Real-Time TEM Observation of the Role of Defects on Nickel Silicide Propagation in Silicon Nanowires

Metal silicides have received significant attention due to their high process compatibility, low resistivity, and structural stability. In nanowire (NW) form, they have been widely prepared using metal diffusion into preformed Si NWs, enabling compositionally controlled high-quality metal silicide nanostructures. However, unlocking the full potential of metal silicide NWs for next-generation nanodevices requires an increased level of mechanistic understanding of this diffusion-driven transformation. Herein, using in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we investigated the defect-controlled silicide formation dynamics in one-dimensional NWs. A solution-based synthetic route was developed to form Si NWs anchored to Ni NW stems as an optimal platform for in situ TEM studies of metal silicide formation. Multiple in situ annealing experiments led to Ni diffusion from the Ni NW stem into the Si NW, forming a nickel silicide. We observed the dynamics of Ni propagation in straight and kinked Si NWs, with some regions of the NWs acting as Ni sinks. In NWs with high defect distribution, we obtained direct evidence of nonuniform Ni diffusion and silicide retardation. The findings of this study provide insights into metal diffusion and silicide formation in complex NW structures, which are crucial from fundamental and application perspectives.

Thermal scanning probe and laser lithography for patterning nanowire based quantum devices

Semiconductor nanowire (NW) quantum devices offer a promising path for the pursuit and investigation of topologically-protected quantum states, and superconducting and spin-based qubits that can be controlled using electric fields. Theoretical investigations into the impact of disorder on the attainment of dependable topological states in semiconducting nanowires with large spin-orbit coupling andg-factor highlight the critical need for improvements in both growth processes and nanofabrication techniques. In this work, we used a hybrid lithography tool for both the high-resolution thermal scanning probe lithography and high-throughput direct laser writing of quantum devices based on thin InSb nanowires with contact spacing of 200 nm. Electrical characterization demonstrates quasi-ballistic transport. The methodology outlined in this study has the potential to reduce the impact of disorder caused by fabrication processes in quantum devices based on 1D semiconductors.

Cross-correlations between currents and tunnel magnetoresistance in interacting double quantum dot-Majorana wire system

We theoretically investigate the spin and charge transport properties of a double quantum dot coupled to distinct edges of the nanowire hosting Majorana zero-energy modes. The focus is on the analysis of the currents flowing through the left and right junctions and their cross-correlations. We show that the system reveals very different transport properties depending on the detuning protocol of the quantum dot energy levels. For the symmetric detuning, the current dependencies reveal only two maxima associated with resonant tunneling, and currents in the left and right arms of the system reveal weak positive cross-correlations. On the other hand, for antisymmetric detuning, the flow of electrons into drains is maximized and strongly correlated in one bias voltage direction, while for the opposite bias direction a spin blockade is predicted. Furthermore, we observe a suppression of the current cross-correlations at a highly symmetric detuning point, indicating the involvement of the Majorana zero-energy modes in the transport processes. To gain insight into the role of the spin polarization of the Majorana edge states, we analyze the spin-dependent transport characteristics by considering the relationship between the spin canting angle, which describes the coupling of the Majorana modes to the spin of the quantum dots, and the magnetic configurations of the ferromagnetic drains. Moreover, we examine the non-local zero bias anomaly in the differential conductance, detailed analysis of which revealed a specific operational mode of the device that can facilitate the identification of the Majorana presence in the quantum dot-Majorana wire system. Finally, we also consider the transport properties in different magnetic configurations of the system and discuss the behavior of the associated tunnel magnetoresistance.

Enhanced osteogenic and antibacterial properties of titanium implant surface modified with Zn-incorporated nanowires: Preclinical in vitro and in vivo investigations

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to synthesize zinc-incorporated nanowires structure modified titanium implant surface (Zn-NW-Ti) and explore its superior osteogenic and antibacterial properties in vitro and in vivo.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Zn-NW-Ti was synthesized via displacement reactions between zinc sulfate solutions and the titanium (Ti) surface, which was pretreated by hydrofluoric acid etching and hyperthermal alkalinization. The physicochemical properties of the Zn-NW-Ti surface were examined. Moreover, the biological effects of Zn-NW-Ti on MC3T3-E1 cells and its antibacterial property against oral pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans) compared with sandblasted and acid-etched Ti (SLA-Ti) and nanowires modified Ti (NW-Ti) surface were assessed. Zn-NW-Ti and SLA-Ti modified implants were inserted into the anterior extraction socket of the rabbit mandible with or without exposure to the mixed bacterial solution (S. aureus, P. gingivalis, and A. actinomycetemcomitans) to investigate the osteointegration and antibacterial performance via radiographic and histomorphometric analysis.

RESULTS

The Zn-NW-Ti surface was successfully prepared. The resultant titanium surface appeared as a nanowires structure with hydrophilicity, from which zinc ions were released in an effective concentration range. The Zn-NW-Ti surface performed better in facilitating the adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells while inhibiting the colonization of bacteria compared with SLA-Ti and NW-Ti surface. The Zn-NW-Ti implant exhibited enhanced osseointegration in vivo, which was attributed to increased osteogenic activity and reduced bacterial-induced inflammation compared with the SLA-Ti implant.

CONCLUSIONS

The Zn-incorporated nanowires structure modified titanium implant surface exhibited improvements in osteogenic and antibacterial properties, which optimized osteointegration in comparison with SLA titanium implant surface.

Defect-induced triple synergistic modulation in copper for superior electrochemical ammonia production across broad nitrate concentrations

Nitrate can be electrochemically degraded to produce ammonia while treating sewage while it remains grand challenge to simultaneously realize high Faradaic efficiency and production rate over wide-range concentrations in real wastewater. Herein, we report the defect-rich Cu nanowire array electrode generated by in-situ electrochemical reduction, exhibiting superior performance in the electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction benefitting from the triple synergistic modulation. Notably, the defect-rich Cu nanowire array electrode delivers current density ranging from 50 to 1100 mA cm-2 across wide nitrate concentrations (1-100 mM) with Faradaic efficiency over 90%. Operando Synchrotron radiation Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and theoretical calculations revealed that the defective Cu sites can simultaneously enhance nitrate adsorption, promote water dissociation and suppress hydrogen evolution. A two-electrode system integrating nitrate reduction reaction in industrial wastewater with glycerol oxidation reaction achieves current density of 550 mA cm-2 at -1.4 V with 99.9% ammonia selectivity and 99.9% nitrate conversion with 100 h stability, demonstrating outstanding practicability.

Fabrication of Metal Contacts on Silicon Nanopillars: The Role of Surface Termination and Defectivity

The application of nanotechnology in developing novel thermoelectric materials has yielded remarkable advancements in material efficiency. In many instances, dimensional constraints have resulted in a beneficial decoupling of thermal conductivity and power factor, leading to large increases in the achievable thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT). For instance, the ZT of silicon increases by nearly two orders of magnitude when transitioning from bulk single crystals to nanowires. Metal-assisted chemical etching offers a viable, low-cost route for preparing silicon nanopillars for use in thermoelectric devices. The aim of this paper is to review strategies for obtaining high-density forests of Si nanopillars and achieving high-quality contacts on them. We will discuss how electroplating can be used for this aim. As an alternative, nanopillars can be embedded into appropriate electrical and thermal insulators, with contacts made by metal evaporation on uncapped nanopillar tips. In both cases, it will be shown how achieving control over surface termination and defectivity is of paramount importance, demonstrating how a judicious control of defectivity enhances contact quality.

Velocities of transmission eigenchannels and diffusion

The diffusion model is used to calculate both the time-averaged flow of particles in stochastic media and the propagation of waves averaged over ensembles of disordered static configurations. For classical waves exciting static disordered samples, such as a layer of paint or a tissue sample, the flux transmitted through the sample may be dramatically enhanced or suppressed relative to predictions of diffusion theory when the sample is excited by a waveform corresponding to a transmission eigenchannel. Even so, it is widely assumed that the velocity of waves is irretrievably randomized in scattering media. Here we demonstrate in microwave measurements and numerical simulations that the statistics of velocity of different transmission eigenchannels are distinct and remains so on all length scales and are identical on the incident and output surfaces. The interplay between eigenchannel velocities and transmission eigenvalues determines the energy density within the medium, the diffusion coefficient, and the dynamics of propagation. The diffusion coefficient and all scattering parameters, including the scattering mean free path, oscillate with the width of the sample as the number and shape of the propagating channels in the medium change.

Salt-Assisted Vapor-Liquid-Solid Growth of 1D van der Waals Materials

The method of salt-assisted vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth is introduced to synthesize 1D nanostructures of trichalcogenide van der Waals (vdW) materials, exemplified by niobium trisulfide (NbS3 ). The method uses a unique catalyst consisting of an alloy of Au and an alkali metal halide (NaCl) to enable rapid and directional growth. High yields of two types of NbS3 1D nanostructures, nanowires and nanoribbons, each with sub-ten nanometer diameter, tens of micrometers length, and distinct 1D morphology and growth orientation are demonstrated. Strategies to control the location, size, and morphology of growth, and extend the growth method to synthesize other transition metal trichalcogenides, NbSe3 and TiS3 , as nanowires are demonstrated. Finally, the role of the Au-NaCl alloy catalyst in guiding VLS synthesis is described and the growth mechanism based on the relationships measured between structure (growth orientation, morphology, and dimensions) and growth conditions (catalyst volume and growth time) is discussed. These results introduce opportunities to expand the library of emerging 1D vdW materials to make use of their unique properties through controlled growth at nanoscale dimensions.

Excitation-wavelength-dependent photoluminescence in GaAs nanowires under high-pressure

GaAs nanowires (NWs) have wide application potential as near-infrared optical devices and the high-pressure strategy has been applied to modulatetheir crystal and electronic structures. As another typical thermodynamic parameter, temperature can also affect the optical performance of semiconductors. Here we report the excitation-wavelength-dependent photoluminescence in GaAs nanowires under high-pressure conditions. The pressure for achieving the maximum photoluminescence (PL) intensity and bandgap transition from direct to indirect of GaAs NWs varies (1.7-2.5 GPa) with the wavelength of the incident lasers (473-633 nm). The Raman peak of GaAs NWs shifts towards higher frequency with increasing excitation wavelengths at the same high-pressure conditions, revealing the stronger heating effect induced by incident laser with the shorter wavelength. The relative temperature difference in GaAs NWs induced by two different lasers can be estimated up to 537.5 K, and the strong heating effect suppresses the light-emission efficiency in GaAs NWs. With increasing the pressure, the relative temperature difference presents a gradual declining trend and PL intensity presents an opposite trend, which relates to the pressure-induced suppression of nonradiative recombination in GaAs NWs. Our study -provides insights into the mechanisms for the excitation-wavelength dependent photoluminescence (EWDP) effect and an alternative route to modulate the high-pressure performance of nanodevices. .

Silver-infused TiO2 nanowires and unveiling their potential for superior wastewater dye remediations

Silver infused ultrathin TiO2 nanowires (NWs) were synthesized via a single step solvothermal approach. The crystallinity, structure, and morphology were determined to understand the physicochemical nature of the nanocomposites. The catalytic efficiency of the newly synthesized nanocatalysts was tested for the textile waste treatment taking methylene blue (MB) as model pollutant under solar light irradiations. Nearly 96% photodegradation efficiency for MB was achieved within 20 min. Furthermore, the recyclability of the photocatalyst was also studied, and the material remained stable and effective up to four consecutive runs. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Precise size-controlled synthesis of Ag-incorporated titania nanowires (ATNWs) Controlled aspect ratios, with tunable lengths and diameters (100-3 nm) via precursor and surfactant optimization Demonstrated ATNWs' efficiency in degrading toxic dye, methylene blue (MB) 96% photodegradation efficiency for MB achieved within 20 min using 3 nm thick annealed TiO2 NWs Recyclability efficiency of photocatalyst, which remained stable and effective for up to four consecutive runs.

Enhanced LWIR response of InP/InAsP quantum discs-in-nanowire array photodetectors by photogating and ultra-thin ITO contacts

Here we report on an experimental and theoretical investigation of the long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) photoresponse of photodetectors based on arrays of three million InP nanowires with axially embedded InAsP quantum discs. An ultra-thin top indium tin oxide contact combined with a novel photogating mechanism facilitates an improved LWIR normal incidence sensitivity in contrast to traditional planar quantum well photodetectors. The electronic structure of the quantum discs, including strain and defect-induced photogating effects, and optical transition matrix elements were calculated by an 8-bandk·psimulation along with solving drift-diffusion equations to unravel the physics behind the generation of narrow linewidth intersubband signals observed from the quantum discs.

Tri-system integration in metal-oxide nanocomposites via in-situ solution-processed method for ultrathin flexible transparent electrodes

For stable operation of ultrathin flexible transparent electrodes (uFTEs), it is critical to implement effective risk management during concurrent multi-loading operation of electrical bias and mechanical folding cycles in high-humidity environments. Despite extensive efforts in preparing solution-processed uFTEs with cost-effective and high-throughput means, achieving in-situ nano-adhesion in heterogeneous metal-oxide nanocomposites remains challenging. In this work, we observed by serendipity liquid-like behaviour of transparent metal-oxide-semiconductor zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) onto silver nanowires (AgNWs) developed by in-situ solution processed method (iSPM). This enabled us to address the long-standing issue of vulnerability in the nanocomposite caused by the interface of dissimilar materials between AgNWs and ZnONPs, resulting in a remarkably improved multi-loading operation. Importantly, substrate-integrated uFTEs constituted of the metal-oxide nanocomposite electrode semi-embedded in the polymer matrix of greatly thin <0.5 μm thickness is successfully demonstrated with the smooth surface topography, promoted by the tri-system integration including (i) AgNW-AgNW, (ii) ZnONP-ZnONP, and (iii) AgNW-ZnONP systems. Our finding unveils the complex interfacial dynamics associated with the heterogeneous interface system between AgNWs and ZnONPs and holds great promise in understanding the in-situ nano-adhesion process and increasing the design flexibility of next generation solution-processed uFTEs.

Sub-Nanomolar Detection of Oligonucleotides Using Molecular Beacons Immobilized on Lightguiding Nanowires

The detection of oligonucleotides is a central step in many biomedical investigations. The most commonly used methods for detecting oligonucleotides often require concentration and amplification before detection. Therefore, developing detection methods with a direct read-out would be beneficial. Although commonly used for the detection of amplified oligonucleotides, fluorescent molecular beacons have been proposed for such direct detection. However, the reported limits of detection using molecular beacons are relatively high, ranging from 100 nM to a few µM, primarily limited by the beacon fluorescence background. In this study, we enhanced the relative signal contrast between hybridized and non-hybridized states of the beacons by immobilizing them on lightguiding nanowires. Upon hybridization to a complementary oligonucleotide, the fluorescence from the surface-bound beacon becomes coupled in the lightguiding nanowire core and is re-emitted at the nanowire tip in a narrower cone of light compared with the standard 4π emission. Prior knowledge of the nanowire positions allows for the continuous monitoring of fluorescence signals from each nanowire, which effectively facilitates the discrimination of signals arising from hybridization events against background signals. This resulted in improved signal-to-background and signal-to-noise ratios, which allowed for the direct detection of oligonucleotides at a concentration as low as 0.1 nM.

Single-mode nanolasers based on FP-WGM hybrid cavity coupling

As an idealized light source, semiconductor nanowire (NW) lasers have been extensively studied due to its potential applications in many fields such as optoelectronics, nanophononics, optical communication, signal processing, and displays. In this letter, we proposed a novel approach to realize a single-mode nanolaser by forming an Fabry-Perot whispering gallery mode (FP-WGM) hybrid nanocavity between two cross-contact CdS NWs, i.e.xandy-NW. In our method,x-NW supports the regular FP oscillation in the axis direction while the cross section ofy-NW provides a ultrasmall WGM nanocavity with a higherQ-factor and mode election which confirms the specific single mode can be excited. Experimentally, single-mode lasing emission centered at 517 nm was obtained with full width at half maximum of 0.08 nm and lasing threshold of ∼50 kW cm-2. The suggested designing skills projected a general strategy for lasing mode regulation and single-mode realization. The single-mode low-threshold lasing strategy in coupled NWs may open a new avenue for practical applications of NW lasers and further trigger other photonic devices at a visible range.

Formulation of Hierarchical Nanowire-Structured CoNiO2 and MoS2/CoNiO2 Hybrid Composite Electrodes for Supercapacitor Applications

Hierarchical porous nanowire-like MoS2/CoNiO2 nanohybrids were synthesized via the hydrothermal process. CoNiO2 nanowires were selected due to the edge site, high surface/volume ratio, and superior electrochemical characteristics as the porous backbone for decoration of layered MoS2 nanoflakes to construct innovative structure hierarchical three-dimensional (3D) porous NWs MoS2/CoNiO2 hybrids with excellent charge accumulation and efficient ion transport capabilities. Physicochemical analyses were conducted on the developed hybrid composite, revealing conclusive evidence that the CoNiO2 nanowires have been securely anchored onto the surface of the MoS2 nanoflake array. The electrochemical results strongly proved the benefit of the hierarchical 3D porous MoS2/CoNiO2 hybrid structure for the charge storage kinetics. The synergistic characteristics arising from the MoS2/CoNiO2 composite yielded a notably high specific capacitance of 1340 F/g at a current density of 0.5 A/g. Furthermore, the material exhibited sustained cycling stability, retaining 95.6% of its initial capacitance after 10 000 long cycles. The asymmetric device comprising porous MoS2/CoNiO2//activated carbon encompassed outstanding energy density (93.02 Wh/kg at 0.85 kW/kg) and cycling stability (94.1% capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles). Additionally, the successful illumination of light-emitting diodes underscores the significant potential of the synthesized MoS2/CoNiO2 (2D/1D) hybrid for practical high-energy storage applications.

Graphene-Based Hybrid Fillers for Rubber Composites

Graphene and its derivatives have been confirmed to be among the best fillers for rubber due to their excellent properties, such as high mechanical strength, improved interface interaction, and strain-induced crystallization capabilities. Graphene rubber materials can be widely used in tires, shoes, high-barrier conductive seals, electromagnetic shielding seals, shock absorbers, etc. In order to reduce the graphene loading and endow more desirable functions to rubber materials, graphene-based hybrid fillers are extensively employed, which can effectively enhance the performance of rubber composites. This review briefly summarizes the recent research on rubber composites with graphene-based hybrid fillers consisting of carbon black, silica, carbon nanotubes, metal oxide, and one-dimensional nanowires. The preparation methods, performance improvements, and applications of different graphene-based hybrid fillers/rubber composites have been investigated. This study also focuses on methods that can ensure the effectiveness of graphene hybrid fillers in reinforcing rubber composites. Furthermore, the enhanced mechanism of graphene- and graphene derivative-based hybrid fillers in rubber composites is investigated to provide a foundation for future studies.

Long indium-rich InGaAs nanowires by SAG-HVPE

We demonstrate the selective area growth of InGaAs nanowires (NWs) on GaAs (111)B substrates using hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE). A high growth rate of more than 50μm h-1and high aspect ratio NWs were obtained. Composition along the NWs was investigated by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy giving an average indium composition of 84%. This is consistent with the composition of 78% estimated from the photoluminescence spectrum of the NWs. Crystal structure analysis of the NWs by transmission electron microscopy indicated random stacking faults related to zinc-blende/wurtzite polytypism. This work demonstrates the ability of HVPE for growing high aspect ratio InGaAs NW arrays.

Charge Puddles Driven Complex Crossover of Magnetoresistance in Non-Topological Sulfur Doped Antimony Selenide Nanowires

A race to achieve a crossover from positive to negative magnetoresistance is intense in the field of nanostructured materials to reduce the size of memory devices. Here, the unusual complex magnetoresistance in nonmagnetic sulfur-doped Sb2 Se3  nanowires is demonstrated. Intentionally, sulfur is doped in such a way to nearly achieve the charge neutrality point that is evident from switching of carrier type from p-type to n-type at 13 K as inferred from the low-temperature thermoelectric power measurements. A change from 3D variable range hopping (VRH) to power law transport with α = 0.18  in resistivity measurement signifies a Luttinger liquid transport with weak links through the nanowires. Interestingly, high magnetic field induced negative magnetoresistance (NMR) occurring in hole dominated temperature regimes can only be explained by invoking the concept of charge puddles. Spot energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), magnetic force microscopy (MFM) measurements, Tmott  and Regel plot indicate an enhanced disorder in these sulfurized nanowires that are found to be the precursor for the formation of these charge puddles. Tunability of conducting states in these nanowires is investigated in the light of interplay of carrier type, magnetic field, temperature, and intricate intra-inter wire transport that makes this nanowires potential for large scale spintronic devices.

Improved Electrochemical Performance of Aqueous Hybrid Supercapacitors Using CrCo2O4 Mesoporous Nanowires: An Innovative Strategy toward Sustainable Energy Devices

High-rate aqueous hybrid supercapacitors (AHSCs) have attracted relevant scientific significance owing to their expected energy density, supercapacitor-level power density, and battery-level energy density. In this work, a bimetallic nanostructured material with chromium-incorporated cobalt oxide (CCO, i.e., CoCr2O4) was prepared via a hydrothermal method to form a stable cubic obelisk structure. Compared with CCO materials prepared using traditional methods, CCO displayed a nanowire structure (50 nm diameter), suggesting an enhanced specific surface area and a large number of active sites for chemical reactions. The electrode possessed a high specific capacitance (2951 F g-1) at a current density of 1 A g-1, minimum Rct (0.135 Ω), and the highest capacitance retention (98.7%), making it an ideal electrode material for AHSCs. Ex situ analysis based on X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed a favorable stability of CCO after 10,000 cycles without any phase changes being detected. GGA and GGA + U methods employed in density functional theory (DFT) also highlighted the enhanced metallic properties of CCO originating from the synergistic effect of semiconducting Cr2O3 and Co3O4 materials.

Flexible metallic core-shell nanostructured electrodes for neural interfacing

Electrodes with nanostructured surface have emerged as promising low-impedance neural interfaces that can avoid the charge-injection restrictions typically associated to microelectrodes. In this work, we propose a novel approximation, based on a two-step template assisted electrodeposition technique, to obtain flexible nanostructured electrodes coated with core-shell Ni-Au vertical nanowires. These nanowires benefit from biocompatibility of the Au shell exposed to the environment and the mechanical properties of Ni that allow for nanowires longer and more homogeneous in length than their only-Au counterparts. The nanostructured electrodes show impedance values, measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), at least 9 times lower than those of flat reference electrodes. This ratio is in good accordance with the increased effective surface area determined both from SEM images and cyclic voltammetry measurements, evidencing that only Au is exposed to the medium. The observed EIS profile evolution of Ni-Au electrodes over 7 days were very close to those of Au electrodes and differently from Ni ones. Finally, the morphology, viability and neuronal differentiation of rat embryonic cortical cells cultured on Ni-Au NW electrodes were found to be similar to those on control (glass) substrates and Au NW electrodes, accompanied by a lower glial cell differentiation. This positive in-vitro neural cell behavior encourages further investigation to explore the tissue responses that the implantation of these nanostructured electrodes might elicit in healthy (damaged) neural tissues in vivo, with special emphasis on eventual tissue encapsulation.

An efficient modeling workflow for high-performance nanowire single-photon avalanche detector

Single-photon detector (SPD), an essential building block of the quantum communication system, plays a fundamental role in developing next-generation quantum technologies. In this work, we propose an efficient modeling workflow of nanowire SPDs utilizing avalanche breakdown at reverse-biased conditions. The proposed workflow is explored to maximize computational efficiency and balance time-consuming drift-diffusion simulation with fast script-based post-processing. Without excessive computational effort, we could predict a suite of key device performance metrics, including breakdown voltage, dark/light avalanche built-up time, photon detection efficiency, dark count rate, and the deterministic part of timing jitter due to device structures. Implementing the proposed workflow onto a single InP nanowire and comparing it to the extensively studied planar devices and superconducting nanowire SPDs, we showed the great potential of nanowire avalanche SPD to outperform their planar counterparts and obtain as superior performance as superconducting nanowires, i.e. achieve a high photon detection efficiency of 70% with a dark count rate less than 20 Hz at non-cryogenic temperature. The proposed workflow is not limited to single-nanowire or nanowire-based device modeling and can be readily extended to more complicated two-/three dimensional structures.

Strong Dimensional and Structural Dependencies of Hot Carrier Effects in InGaAs Nanowires: Implications for Photovoltaic Solar Cells

III-V nanowire structures are among the promising material systems with applications in hot carrier solar cells. These nanostructures can meet the requirements for such photovoltaic devices, i.e., the suppression of thermalization loss, an efficient hot carrier transport, and enhanced photoabsorption thanks to their unique one-dimensional (1D) geometry and density-of-states. Here, we investigate the effects of spatial confinement of photogenerated hot carriers in InGaAs-InAlAs core-shell nanowires, which presents an ideal class of hot carrier solar cell materials due to its suitable electronic properties. Using steady-state photoluminescence spectroscopy, our study reveals that by increasing the degree of spatial confinement and Auger recombination, the effects of hot carriers increase, which is in good agreement with theoretical modeling. However, for thin nanowires, the temperature of hot carriers decreases as the effects of crystal disorder increase. This observation is confirmed by probing the extent of the disorder-induced Urbach tail and linked to the presence of a higher density of stacking defects in the limit of thin nanowires. These findings expand our knowledge of hot carrier thermalization in nanowires, which can be applied for designing efficient 1D hot carrier absorbers for advanced-concept photovoltaic solar cells.

Kinetically Controlled Structural Modulation of the Self-Assembled Silver Nanoclusters

Metal nanoclusters (NCs) with atomic precision are growing into a fascinating class of building blocks for supramolecular chemistry. What makes it more interesting is the enhanced optical properties of the ordered structures, including aggregation-induced emission (AIE). However, algorithm dictating the self-assembly of metal NCs in multicomponent environment remains largely unknown, and effective means to manipulate the self-assembly is still lacking, especially under kinetic control. Herein, nanofibers which contain sub-1 nm nanowires and exhibit circularly polarized phosphorescence (CPP) are obtained from crystallization-induced self-assembly (CISA) of water-soluble, negatively charged silver NCs (Ag9 -NCs) in the presence of glutamic acid (Glu). By the introduction of a positively-charged additive (choline chloride, CC), the structure of the nanowires is modulated and the lateral interaction between adjacent nanofibers is adjusted, leading to simultaneous improvement of the phosphorescence and chirality which finally enhances CPP. Importantly, changing the time at which CC is introduced altered the kinetic pathway of the CISA, which enables to effectively manipulate both the final structures of the self-assembled Ag9 -NCs and the output of the optical signals.

Fast nanoscale imaging of strain in a multi-segment heterostructured nanowire with 2D Bragg ptychography

Developing semiconductor devices requires a fast and reliable source of strain information with high spatial resolution and strain sensitivity. This work investigates the strain in an axially heterostructured 180 nm-diameter GaInP nanowire with InP segments of varying lengths down to 9 nm, simultaneously probing both materials. Scanning X-ray diffraction (XRD) is compared with Bragg projection ptychography (BPP), a fast single-projection method. BPP offers a sufficient spatial resolution to reveal fine details within the largest segments, unlike scanning XRD. The spatial resolution affects the quantitative accuracy of the strain maps, where BPP shows much-improved agreement with an elastic 3D finite element model compared with scanning XRD. The sensitivity of BPP to small deviations from the Bragg condition is systematically investigated. The experimental confirmation of the model suggests that the large lattice mismatch of 1.52% is accommodated without defects.

Geometric Shape Recognition with an Ultra-High Density Perovskite Nanowire Array-Based Artificial Vision System

Artificial vision systems (AVS) have potential applications in visual prosthetics and artificially intelligent robotics, and they require a preprocessor and a processor to mimic human vision. Halide perovskite (HP) is a promising preprocessor and processor due to its excellent photoresponse, ubiquitous charge migration pathways, and innate hysteresis. However, the material instability associated with HP thin films hinders their utilization in physical AVSs. Herein, we have developed ultrahigh-density arrays of robust HP nanowires (NWs) rooted in a porous alumina membrane (PAM) as the active layer for an AVS. The NW devices exhibit gradual photocurrent change, responding to changes in light pulse duration, intensity, and number, and allow contrast enhancement of visual inputs with a device lifetime of over 5 months. The NW-based processor possesses temporally stable conductance states with retention >105 s and jitter <10%. The physical AVS demonstrated 100% accuracy in recognizing different shapes, establishing HP as a reliable material for neuromorphic vision systems.

Inorganic Hydrogel Based on Low-Dimensional Nanomaterials

Composed of three-dimensional (3D) nanoscale inorganic bones and up to 99% water, inorganic hydrogels have attracted much attention and undergone significant growth in recent years. The basic units of inorganic hydrogels could be metal nanoparticles, metal nanowires, SiO2 nanowires, graphene nanosheets, and MXene nanosheets, which are then assembled into the special porous structures by the sol-gel process or gelation via either covalent or noncovalent interactions. The high electrical and thermal conductivity, resistance to corrosion, stability across various temperatures, and high surface area make them promising candidates for diverse applications, such as energy storage, catalysis, adsorption, sensing, and solar steam generation. Besides, some interesting derivatives, such as inorganic aerogels and xerogels, can be produced through further processing, diversifying their functionalities and application domains greatly. In this context, we primarily provide a comprehensive overview of the current status of inorganic hydrogels and their derivatives, including the structures of inorganic hydrogels with various compositions, their gelation mechanisms, and their exceptional practical performance in fields related to energy and environmental applications.

Low Surface Recombination in Hexagonal SiGe Alloy Nanowires: Implications for SiGe-Based Nanolasers

Monolithic integration of silicon-based electronics and photonics could open the door toward many opportunities including on-chip optical data communication and large-scale application of light-based sensing devices in healthcare and automotive; by some, it is considered the Holy Grail of silicon photonics. The monolithic integration is, however, severely hampered by the inability of Si to efficiently emit light. Recently, important progress has been made by the demonstration of efficient light emission from direct-bandgap hexagonal SiGe (hex-SiGe) alloy nanowires. For this promising material, realized by employing a nanowire structure, many challenges and open questions remain before a large-scale application can be realized. Considering that for other direct-bandgap materials like GaAs, surface recombination can be a true bottleneck, one of the open questions is the importance of surface recombination for the photoluminescence efficiency of this new material. In this work, temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements were performed on both hex-Ge and hex-SiGe nanowires with and without surface passivation schemes that have been well documented and proven effective on cubic silicon and germanium to elucidate whether and to what extent the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of the wires can be improved. Additionally, time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) measurements were performed on unpassivated hex-SiGe nanowires as a function of their diameter. The dependence of the surface recombination on the SiGe composition could, however, not be yet addressed given the sample-to-sample variations of the state-of-the-art hex-SiGe nanowires. With the aforementioned experiments, we demonstrate that at room temperature, under high excitation conditions (a few kW cm-2), the hex-(Si)Ge surface is most likely not a bottleneck for efficient radiative emission under relatively high excitation conditions. This is an important asset for future hex(Si)Ge optoelectronic devices, specifically for nanolasers.

Guided CdTe Nanowires Integrated into Fast Near-Infrared Photodetectors

Infrared photodetectors are essential devices for telecommunication and night vision technologies. Two frequently used materials groups for this technology are III-V and II-VI semiconductors, notably, mercury-cadmium-telluride alloys (MCT). However, growing them usually requires expensive substrates that can only be provided on small scales, and their large-scale production as crystalline nanostructures is challenging. In this paper, we present a two-stage process for creating aligned MCT nanowires (NWs). First, we report the growth of planar CdTe nanowires with controlled orientations on flat and faceted sapphire substrates via the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism. We utilize this guided growth approach to parallelly integrate the NWs into fast near-infrared photodetectors with characteristic rise and fall times of ∼100 μs at room temperature. An epitaxial effect of the planar growth and the unique structure of the NWs, including size and composition, are suggested to explain the high performance of the devices. In the second stage, we show that cation exchange with mercury can be applied, resulting in a band gap narrowing of up to 55 meV, corresponding to an exchange of 2% Cd with Hg. This work opens new opportunities for creating small, fast, and sensitive infrared detectors with an engineered band gap operating at room temperature.

High-Performance Multiwavelength GaNAs Single Nanowire Lasers

In this study, we report a significant enhancement in the performance of GaNAs-based single nanowire lasers through optimization of growth conditions, leading to a lower lasing threshold and higher operation temperatures. Our analysis reveals that these improvements in the laser performance can be attributed to a decrease in the density of localized states within the material. Furthermore, we demonstrate that owing to their excellent nonlinear optical properties, these nanowires support self-frequency conversion of the stimulated emission through second harmonic generation (SHG) and sum-frequency generation (SFG), providing coherent light emission in the cyan-green range. Mode-specific differences in the self-conversion efficiency are revealed and explained by differences in the light extraction efficiency of the converted light caused by the electric field distribution of the fundamental modes. Our work, therefore, facilitates the design and development of multiwavelength coherent light generation and higher-temperature operation of GaNAs nanowire lasers, which will be useful in the fields of optical communications, sensing, and nanophotonics.

Identifying the distinct roles of dual dopants in stabilizing the platinum-nickel nanowire catalyst for durable fuel cell

Stabilizing active PtNi alloy catalyst toward oxygen reduction reaction is essential for fuel cell. Doping of specific metals is an empirical strategy, however, the atomistic insight into how dopant boosts the stability of PtNi catalyst still remains elusive. Here, with typical examples of Mo and Au dopants, we identify the distinct roles of Mo and Au in stabilizing PtNi nanowires catalysts. Specifically, due to the stronger interaction between atomic orbital for Ni-Mo and Pt-Au, the Mo dopant mainly suppresses the outward diffusion of Ni atoms while the Au dopant contributes to the stabilization of surface Pt overlayer. Inspired by this atomistic understanding, we rationally construct the PtNiMoAu nanowires by integrating the different functions of Mo and Au into one entity. Such catalyst assembled in fuel cell cathode thus presents both remarkable activity and durability, even surpassing the United States Department of Energy technical targets for 2025.

Electrodeposited Heusler Alloys-Based Nanowires for Shape Memory and Magnetocaloric Applications

In this article, the downsizing of functional Heusler alloys is discussed, focusing on the published results dealing with Heusler alloy nanowires. The theoretical information inspired the fabrication of novel nanowires that are presented in the results section of the article. Three novel nanowires were fabricated with the compositions of Ni66Fe21Ga13, Ni58Fe28In14, and Ni50Fe31Sn19. The Ni66Fe21Ga13 nanowires were fabricated, aiming to improve the stoichiometry of previous functional Ni-Fe-Ga Heusler nanomaterials with a functional behavior above room temperature. They exhibit a phase transition at the temperature of ≈375 K, which results in a magnetocaloric response of |ΔSM| ≈ 0.12 J·kg-1·K-1 at the magnetic field change of only μ0ΔH = 1 T. Novel Heusler alloy Ni58Fe28In14 nanowires, as well as Ni50Fe31Sn19 nanowires, are analyzed for the first time, and their magnetic properties are discussed, introducing a simple electrochemical approach for the fabrication of nanodimensional alloys from mutually immiscible metals.

Nanomolding of Two-Dimensional Materials

Lateral confinement of layered, two-dimensional (2D) materials has uniquely enabled the exploration of several topological phenomena in electron transport due to the well-defined nanoscale cross-sections and perimeters. At present, research on laterally confined 2D materials is constrained by the lack of synthesis methods that can reliably and controllably produce nanostructures with narrow widths and high aspect ratios. We demonstrate the use of thermomechanical nanomolding (TMNM) to fabricate nanowires of six layered materials (Te, In2Se3, Bi2Te3, Bi2Se3, GaSe, and Sb2Te3) with widths of 40 nm and aspect ratios above 100. During molding, the van der Waals (vdW) layers rotate by 90° from the horizontal direction in the bulk feedstock to the vertical direction in the molded nanowire, such that the layers are aligned along the nanowire length. We find that interfacial diffusion and surface energy minimization drive nanowire formation during TMNM, often resulting in single-crystalline nanowires with consistent crystallographic orientation.

3D Magnetization Textures: Toroidal Magnetic Hopfion Stability in Cylindrical Samples

Topologically non-trivial magnetization configurations in ferromagnetic materials on the nanoscale, such as hopfions, skyrmions, and vortices, have attracted considerable attention of researchers during the last few years. In this article, by applying the theory of micromagnetism, I demonstrate that the toroidal hopfion magnetization configuration is a metastable state of a thick cylindrical ferromagnetic nanodot or a nanowire of a finite radius. The existence of this state is a result of the competition among exchange, magnetostatic, and magnetic anisotropy energies. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction and surface magnetic anisotropy are of second importance for the hopfion stabilization. The toroidal hopfion metastable magnetization configuration may be reached in the process of remagnetizing the sample by applying an external magnetic field along the cylindrical axis.

Direct and integrating sampling in terahertz receivers from wafer-scalable InAs nanowires

Terahertz (THz) radiation will play a pivotal role in wireless communications, sensing, spectroscopy and imaging technologies in the decades to come. THz emitters and receivers should thus be simplified in their design and miniaturized to become a commodity. In this work we demonstrate scalable photoconductive THz receivers based on horizontally-grown InAs nanowires (NWs) embedded in a bow-tie antenna that work at room temperature. The NWs provide a short photoconductivity lifetime while conserving high electron mobility. The large surface-to-volume ratio also ensures low dark current and thus low thermal noise, compared to narrow-bandgap bulk devices. By engineering the NW morphology, the NWs exhibit greatly different photoconductivity lifetimes, enabling the receivers to detect THz photons via both direct and integrating sampling modes. The broadband NW receivers are compatible with gating lasers across the entire range of telecom wavelengths (1.2-1.6 μm) and thus are ideal for inexpensive all-optical fibre-based THz time-domain spectroscopy and imaging systems. The devices are deterministically positioned by lithography and thus scalable to the wafer scale, opening the path for a new generation of commercial THz receivers.

Near-Atomic-Scale Perspective on the Oxidation of Ti3 C2 Tx MXenes: Insights from Atom Probe Tomography

MXenes are a family of 2D transition metal carbides and nitrides with remarkable properties, bearing great potential for energy storage and catalysis applications. However, their oxidation behavior is not yet fully understood, and there are still open questions regarding the spatial distribution and precise quantification of surface terminations, intercalated ions, and possible uncontrolled impurities incorporated during synthesis and processing. Here, atom probe tomography (APT) analysis of as-synthesized Ti3 C2 Tx MXenes reveals the presence of alkali (Li, Na) and halogen (Cl, F) elements as well as unetched Al. Following oxidation of the colloidal solution of MXenes, it is observed that the alkalis are enriched in TiO2 nanowires. Although these elements are tolerated through the incorporation by wet chemical synthesis, they are often overlooked when the activity of these materials is considered, particularly during catalytic testing. This work demonstrates how the capability of APT to image these elements in 3D at the near-atomic scale can help to better understand the activity and degradation of MXenes, in order to guide their synthesis for superior functional properties.

Mnemonic Rutile-Rutile Interfaces Triggering Spontaneous Dissociation of Water

Water interaction with mineral surfaces is a complex living system decisive for any photocatalytic process. Resolving the atomistic structure of mineral-water interfaces is thus crucial for understanding these processes. Fibrous rutile TiO2 , grown hydrothermally on twinned rutile seeds under acidic conditions, is studied in terms of interface translation, atomic structure, and surface chemistry in the presence of water, by means of advanced microscopy and spectroscopy methods combined with structure modeling and density functional theory calculations. It is shown that fibers while staying in stable separation during their growth, adopt a special crystallographic registry that is controlled by repulsion forces between fully hydroxylated and protonated (110) surfaces. During relaxation, a turbulent proton transfer and cracking of O─H bonds is observed, generating a strong acidic character via proton jump from bridge ─OHb to terminal ─OHt groups, and spontaneous dissociation of interfacial water via a transient protonation of the ─OHt groups. It is shown, that this specific interface structure can be implemented to induce acidic response in an initially neutral medium when re-immersed. This is thought to be the first demonstration of quantum-confined mineral-water interface, capable of memorizing its past and conveying its structurally encoded properties into a new environment.

Ultrathin Serpentine Insulation Layer Architecture for Ultralow Power Gas Sensor

Toxic gases have surreptitiously influenced the health and environment of contemporary society with their odorless/colorless characteristics. As a result, a pressing need for reliable and portable gas-sensing devices has continuously increased. However, with their negligence to efficiently microstructure their bulky supportive layer on which the sensing and heating materials are located, previous semiconductor metal-oxide gas sensors have been unable to fully enhance their power efficiency, a critical factor in power-stringent portable devices. Herein, an ultrathin insulation layer with a unique serpentine architecture is proposed for the development of a power-efficient gas sensor, consuming only 2.3 mW with an operating temperature of 300 °C (≈6% of the leading commercial product). Utilizing a mechanically robust serpentine design, this work presents a fully suspended standalone device with a supportive layer thickness of only ≈50 nm. The developed gas sensor shows excellent mechanical durability, operating over 10 000 on/off cycles and ≈2 years of life expectancy under continuous operation. The gas sensor detected carbon monoxide concentrations from 30 to 1 ppm with an average response time of ≈15 s and distinguishable sensitivity to 1 ppm (ΔR/R0 = 5%). The mass-producible fabrication and heating efficiency presented here provide an exemplary platform for diverse power-efficient-related devices.

Reshaping Covalent Nanowires by Exploiting an Unexpected Plasticity Mediated by Deformation Twinning

Nanowires (NWs) are among the most studied nanostructures as they have numerous promising applications thanks to their various unique properties. Furthermore, the properties of NWs can be tailored during synthesis by introducing structural defects such as nano-twins, periodic polytypes, and kinks, i.e., abrupt changes in their axial direction. Here, this work reports for the first time the postsynthesis formation of such defects, achieved by exploiting a peculiar plasticity that may occur in nanosized covalent materials. Specifically, in this work the authors found that single-crystal CuO NWs can form double kinks when subjected to external mechanical loading. Both the microscopy and atomistic modeling suggest that deformation-induced twinning along the( 1 ¯ 10 ) $( {\bar{1}10} )$ plane is the mechanism behind this effect. In a single case the authors are able to unkink a NW back to its initial straight profile, indicating the possibility of reversible plasticity in CuO NWs, which is supported by the atomistic simulations. The phenomenon reported here provides novel insights into the mechanisms of plastic deformation in covalent NWs and offers potential avenues for developing techniques to customize the shape of NWs postsynthesis and introduce new functionalities.

Surface modification of ZnO nanowires using single walled carbon nanotubes for efficient UV-visible broadband photodetection

A UV-visible broadband photodetector (PD) based on single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)/Zinc oxide nanowire (ZnO NW) hybrid is being reported. This work focuses on designing a stable, fast, efficient and reliable hybrid broadband PD by surface modification of ZnO NWs using SWCNT. The study shows that spectral response of the hybrid heterostructure (HS) spans beyond the UV spectrum and into the visible region which is due to the integration of SWCNTs. Photoluminescence (PL) study reveals surface plasmon (SP) mediated resonance phenomenon resulting in an increase in PL intensity. High nanotube charge carrier mobility and conductivity allows the hybrid HS to attain high values of spectral responsivity (Rλ= 187.77 A W-1), external quantum efficiency (EQE = 5.82 × 104%), specific detectivity (D* = 7.04 × 1011Jones) and small noise equivalent power (NEP = 4.77 × 10-12W) values for the SWCNT/ZnO NW hybrid HS. The device also gives quick rise (trise= 0.43 s) and fall (tfall= 0.60 s) time values.

Transparent Intracellular Sensing Platform with Si Needles for Simultaneous Live Imaging

Vertically ordered Si needles are of particular interest for long-term intracellular recording owing to their capacity to infiltrate living cells with negligible damage and minimal toxicity. Such intracellular recordings could greatly benefit from simultaneous live cell imaging without disrupting their culture, contributing to an in-depth understanding of cellular function and activity. However, the use of standard live imaging techniques, such as inverted and confocal microscopy, is currently impeded by the opacity of Si wafers, typically employed for fabricating vertical Si needles. Here, we introduce a transparent intracellular sensing platform that combines vertical Si needles with a percolated network of Au-Ag nanowires on a transparent elastomeric substrate. This sensing platform meets all prerequisites for simultaneous intracellular recording and imaging, including electrochemical impedance, optical transparency, mechanical compliance, and cell viability. Proof-of-concept demonstrations of this sensing platform include monitoring electrical potentials in cardiomyocyte cells and in three-dimensionally engineered cardiovascular tissue, all while conducting live imaging with inverted and confocal microscopes. This sensing platform holds wide-ranging potential applications for intracellular research across various disciplines such as neuroscience, cardiology, muscle physiology, and drug screening.

Nanostructured Channel for Improving Emission Efficiency of Hybrid Light-Emitting Field-Effect Transistors

We report on the mechanism of enhancing the luminance and external quantum efficiency (EQE) by developing nanostructured channels in hybrid (organic/inorganic) light-emitting transistors (HLETs) that combine a solution-processed oxide and a polymer heterostructure. The heterostructure comprised two parts: (i) the zinc tin oxide/zinc oxide (ZTO/ZnO), with and without ZnO nanowires (NWs) grown on the top of the ZTO/ZnO stack, as the charge transport layer and (ii) a polymer Super Yellow (SY, also known as PDY-132) layer as the light-emitting layer. Device characterization shows that using NWs significantly improves luminance and EQE (≈1.1% @ 5000 cd m-2) compared to previously reported similar HLET devices that show EQE < 1%. The size and shape of the NWs were controlled through solution concentration and growth time, which also render NWs to have higher crystallinity. Notably, the size of the NWs was found to provide higher escape efficiency for emitted photons while offering lower contact resistance for charge injection, which resulted in the improved optical performance of HLETs. These results represent a significant step forward in enabling efficient and all-solution-processed HLET technology for lighting and display applications.

Mechanically tunable organogels from highly charged polyoxometalate clusters loaded with fluorescent dyes

Inorganic nanowires-based organogel, a class of emerging organogel with convenient preparation, recyclability, and excellent mechanical properties, is in its infancy. Solidifying and functionalizing nanowires-based organogels by designing the gelator structure remains challenging. Here, we fabricate Ca2-P2W16 and Ca2-P2W15M nanowires utilizing highly charged [Ca2P2W16O60]10- and [Ca2P2W15MO60]14-/13- cluster units, respectively, which are then employed for preparing organogels. The mechanical performance and stability of prepared organogels are improved due to the enhanced interactions between nanowires and locked organic molecules. Compressive stress and tensile stress of Ca2-P2W16 nanowires-based organogel reach 34.5 and 29.0 kPa, respectively. The critical gel concentration of Ca2-P2W16 nanowires is as low as 0.28%. Single-molecule force spectroscopy confirms that the connections between cluster units and linkers can regulate the flexibility of nanowires. Furthermore, the incorporation of fluorophores into the organogels adds fluorescence properties. This work reveals the relationships between the microstructures of inorganic gelators and the properties of organogels, guiding the synthesis of high-performance and functional organogels.

Microheater with copper nanofiber network via electrospinning and electroless deposition

In this report, we present the development of a copper nanofiber network-based microheater, designed for applications in electron microscopes, gas sensing, and cell culture platforms. The seed layer, essential for electroless deposition, was fabricated through the electrospinning of a palladium-contained polyvinylpyrrolidone solution followed by a heat treatment. This process minimized the contact resistance between nanofibers. We successfully fabricated a microheater with evenly distributed temperature by controlling the electrospinning time, heat treatment conditions, and electroless deposition time. We assessed the electrical and thermal characteristics of the microheater by examining the nanofiber density, sheet resistance, and transmittance. The microheater's performance was evaluated by applying current, and we verified its capacity to heat up to a maximum of 350 °C. We further observed the microheater's temperature distribution at varying current levels through an infrared camera. The entire manufacturing procedure takes place under normal pressure, eliminating the need for masking or etching processes. This renders the method easily adaptable to the mass production of microdevices. The method is expected to be applicable to various materials and sizes and is cost-effective compared to commercially produced microheaters developed through microelectromechanical system processes, which demand complex facilities and high cost.

Recent Advances in Nanowire-Based Wearable Physical Sensors

Wearable electronics is a technology that closely integrates electronic devices with the human body or clothing, which can realize human-computer interaction, health monitoring, smart medical, and other functions. Wearable physical sensors are an important part of wearable electronics. They can sense various physical signals from the human body or the surrounding environment and convert them into electrical signals for processing and analysis. Nanowires (NW) have unique properties such as a high surface-to-volume ratio, high flexibility, high carrier mobility, a tunable bandgap, a large piezoresistive coefficient, and a strong light-matter interaction. They are one of the ideal candidates for the fabrication of wearable physical sensors with high sensitivity, fast response, and low power consumption. In this review, we summarize recent advances in various types of NW-based wearable physical sensors, specifically including mechanical, photoelectric, temperature, and multifunctional sensors. The discussion revolves around the structural design, sensing mechanisms, manufacture, and practical applications of these sensors, highlighting the positive role that NWs play in the sensing process. Finally, we present the conclusions with perspectives on current challenges and future opportunities in this field.

Rationally Designed ZnTe@C Nanowires with Superior Zinc Storage Performance for Aqueous Zn Batteries

Te-based materials with excellent electrical conductivity and ultra-high volume specific capacity have attracted much attention for the cost-efficient aqueous Zn batteries. However, the construction of functional structures with mild volume expansion and suppressed shuttle effects, enabling an expanded lifespan, is still a challenge for conversion-type materials. Herein, the carbon-coated zinc telluride nanowires (ZnTe@C NWs) are rationally designed as a high-performance cathode material for aqueous Zn batteries. The carbon-coated1D nanostructure could not only provide optimized transmission path for electrons and ions, but also help to maintain structure integrity upon volume variation and suppress intermediates dissolution, endowing the ZnTe@C NWs with improved cycling stability and reaction kinetics. Consequently, a reversible six-electron reaction mechanism of ZnTe@C NWs based on Te2- /Te4+ conversion with excellent output capacity (586 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 ) and lifespan (>250 mAh g-1 retained for 400 cycles at 1 A g-1 ) is eventually achieved.
