The Jeff = 1/2 Antiferromagnet Sr2 IrO4 : A Golden Avenue toward New Physics and Functions

Continuous strain tuning of oxygen evolution catalysts with anisotropic thermal expansion

Compressive strain, downshifting the d-band center of transition metal oxides, is an effective way to accelerate the sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for water electrolysis. Here, we find that anisotropic thermal expansion can produce compressive strains of the IrO6 octahedron in Sr2IrO4 catalyst, thus downshifting its d-band center. Different from the previous strategies to create constant strains in the crystals, the thermal-triggered compressive strains can be real-timely tuned by varying temperature. As a result of the thermal strain accelerating OER kinetics, the Sr2IrO4 exhibits the nonlinear lnjo - T-1 (jo, exchange current density; T, absolute temperature) Arrhenius relationship, resulting from the thermally induced low-barrier electron transfer in the presence of thermal compressive strains. Our results verify that the thermal field can be utilized to manipulate the electronic states of Sr2IrO4 via thermal compressive strains downshifting the d-band center, significantly accelerating the OER kinetics, beyond the traditional thermal diffusion effects.

Exotic Magnetic Anisotropy Near Digitized Dimensional Mott Boundary

The magnetic anisotropy of low-dimensional Mott systems exhibits unexpected magnetotransport behavior useful for spin-based quantum electronics. Yet, the anisotropy of natural materials is inherently determined by the crystal structure, highly limiting its engineering. The magnetic anisotropy modulation near a digitized dimensional Mott boundary in artificial superlattices composed of a correlated magnetic monolayer SrRuO3 and nonmagnetic SrTiO3 , is demonstrated. The magnetic anisotropy is initially engineered by modulating the interlayer coupling strength between the magnetic monolayers. Interestingly, when the interlayer coupling strength is maximized, a nearly degenerate state is realized, in which the anisotropic magnetotransport is strongly influenced by both the thermal and magnetic energy scales. The results offer a new digitized control for magnetic anisotropy in low-dimensional Mott systems, inspiring promising integration of Mottronics and spintronics.

Enhanced magnetism and persistent insulating state in Mn doped Sr2IrO4

The influences of Mn substitution at the Ir site of Sr₂IrO₄are investigated via a comprehensive study of the variation of structural parameters, the transport and magnetic properties of the Sr₂Ir_1-xMn_xO₄samples. The incorporation of Mn leads to an increase of the in-plane Ir-O-Ir bond angle, while it is not sufficient to drive the Mott-insulating state to a metallic state. Interestingly, we find a coexistence of Ir⁴⁺-O^2--Ir⁴⁺super-exchange interaction and Mn³⁺-O^2--Mn⁴⁺double exchange interaction inx⩾ 0.06 samples. The Mn³⁺-O^2--Mn⁴⁺ferromagnetic domains are isolated by the Ir⁴⁺-O^2--Ir⁴⁺antiferromagnetic areas, leading to a severely localized electronic and magnetic states. The electron hopping between the localized states dominates the conductivity of the Sr₂Ir_1-xMn_xO₄samples.

Low-field magnetic anisotropy of Sr2IrO4

Magnetic anisotropy in strontium iridate (Sr₂IrO₄) is essential because of its strong spin-orbit coupling and crystal field effect. In this paper, we present a detailed mapping of the out-of-plane (OOP) magnetic anisotropy in Sr₂IrO₄for different sample orientations using torque magnetometry measurements in the low-magnetic-field region before the isospins are completely ordered. Dominant in-plane anisotropy was identified at low fields, confirming thebaxis as an easy magnetization axis. Based on the fitting analysis of the strong uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, we observed that the main anisotropic effect arises from a spin-orbit-coupled magnetic exchange interaction affecting the OOP interaction. The effect of interlayer exchange interaction results in additional anisotropic terms owing to the tilting of the isospins. The results are relevant for understanding OOP magnetic anisotropy and provide a new way to analyze the effects of spin-orbit-coupling and interlayer magnetic exchange interactions. This study provides insight into the understanding of bulk magnetic, magnetotransport, and spintronic behavior on Sr₂IrO₄for future studies.

Enhancement of Photoresponse on Narrow-Bandgap Mott Insulator α-RuCl3 via Intercalation

Charge doping to Mott insulators is critical to realize high-temperature superconductivity, quantum spin liquid state, and Majorana fermion, which would contribute to quantum computation. Mott insulators also have a great potential for optoelectronic applications; however, they showed insufficient photoresponse in previous reports. To enhance the photoresponse of Mott insulators, charge doping is a promising strategy since it leads to effective modification of electronic structure near the Fermi level. Intercalation, which is the ion insertion into the van der Waals gap of layered materials, is an effective charge-doping method without defect generation. Herein, we showed significant enhancement of optoelectronic properties of a layered Mott insulator, α-RuCl₃, through electron doping by organic cation intercalation. The electron-doping results in substantial electronic structure change, leading to the bandgap shrinkage from 1.2 eV to 0.7 eV. Due to localized excessive electrons in RuCl₃, distinct density of states is generated in the valence band, leading to the optical absorption change rather than metallic transition even in substantial doping concentration. The stable near-infrared photodetector using electronic modulated RuCl₃ showed 50 times higher photoresponsivity and 3 times faster response time compared to those of pristine RuCl₃, which contributes to overcoming the disadvantage of a Mott insulator as a promising optoelectronic device and expanding the material libraries.

Advanced First-Principle Modeling of Relativistic Ruddlesden—Popper Strontium Iridates

In this review, we provide a survey of the application of advanced first-principle methods on the theoretical modeling and understanding of novel electronic, optical, and magnetic properties of the spin-orbit coupled Ruddlesden–Popper series of iridates Srn+1IrnO3n+1 (n = 1, 2, and ∞). After a brief description of the basic aspects of the adopted methods (noncollinear local spin density approximation plus an on-site Coulomb interaction (LSDA+U), constrained random phase approximation (cRPA), GW, and Bethe–Salpeter equation (BSE)), we present and discuss select results. We show that a detailed phase diagrams of the metal–insulator transition and magnetic phase transition can be constructed by inspecting the evolution of electronic and magnetic properties as a function of Hubbard U, spin–orbit coupling (SOC) strength, and dimensionality n, which provide clear evidence for the crucial role played by SOC and U in establishing a relativistic (Dirac) Mott–Hubbard insulating state in Sr2IrO4 and Sr3Ir2O7. To characterize the ground-state phases, we quantify the most relevant energy scales fully ab initio—crystal field energy, Hubbard U, and SOC constant of three compounds—and discuss the quasiparticle band structures in detail by comparing GW and LSDA+U data. We examine the different magnetic ground states of structurally similar n = 1 and n = 2 compounds and clarify that the origin of the in-plane canted antiferromagnetic (AFM) state of Sr2IrO4 arises from competition between isotropic exchange and Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (DM) interactions whereas the collinear AFM state of Sr3Ir2O7 is due to strong interlayer magnetic coupling. Finally, we report the dimensionality controlled metal–insulator transition across the series by computing their optical transitions and conductivity spectra at the GW+BSE level from the the quasi two-dimensional insulating n = 1 and 2 phases to the three-dimensional metallic n=∞ phase.
