Improvement of Electrical Conductivity in Conjugated Polymers through Cascade Doping with Small-Molecular Dopants

Application of n-Type or p-Type Dopants in Organic Photovoltaics

Compared to inorganic semiconductors, organic semiconductors (OSCs) exhibit lower permittivity and carrier mobility. This is primarily attributed to their weaker van der Waals forces and the significant structural and energetic disorder, ultimately impeding the commercial application of organic photovoltaics (OPVs). However, the introduction of n-type or p-type dopants offers a solution. These dopants effectively eliminate intrinsic traps in OSCs through trap-filling techniques, elevating carrier concentration and mobility, and consequently enhancing overall performance. This article delves into the systematic exploration of n-type and p-type dopant applications in OPVs. It encompasses doping mechanisms, commonly used n-type and p-type dopants, doping methodologies, the strategic distribution of dopants and the effect of doping on device performance. Ultimately, this concept strives to offer invaluable insights and guidance for advancing OPV performance via doping techniques.

Fabrication of 3D Functional Nanocomposites Through Post-Doping of Two-Photon Microprinted Nanoporous Architectures

Two-photon lithography (TPL) enables the fabrication of complex 3D structures with sub-micrometer precision. Incorporation of new functionalities into TPL-printed structures is key to advance their applications. A prevalent approach to achieve this is by directly adding functional nanomaterials into the photoresist (called "pre-doping"), which has several inherent challenges including material compatibility, light scattering, and nanoparticle agglomeration. Here, a conceptually different "post-doping" strategy is proposed, where the functionality of the TPL-printed architectures is achieved by impregnating functional materials into their nanoporous 3D mimics. Using the principle of polymerization-induced phase separation, TPL printing of complex microarchitectures with well-defined nanoporous structures having pores of ≈420 nm is realized, which allows spontaneous impregnation of functional liquids via capillary effect. Importantly, unlike the "pre-doping" approach that requires printing optimization for each photoresist, this strategy is highly versatile in terms of functionalities possible. As a proof-of-concept, the impregnation of several functional liquids into TPL-printed porous microstructures is demonstrated: a fluorinated-lubricant, an ionic liquid, and three types of fluorescent liquids, conferring the microstructures with slippery, conductive, and localized fluorescence properties, respectively. Such versatility to fabricate complex microstructures with tailorable and localized functionalities is expected to open new possibilities in wide fields including bionics, electronics, and cell biology.

Dopant-induced Morphology of Organic Semiconductors Resulting in High Doping Performance

Doping plays a crucial role in modulating and enhancing the performance of organic semiconductor (OSC) devices. In this study, the critical role of dopants is underscored in shaping the morphology and structure of OSC films, which in turn profoundly influences their properties. Two dopants, trityl tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl) (TrTPFB) and N,N-dimethylanilinium tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate (DMA-TPFB), are examined for their doping effects on poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and PBBT-2T host OSCs. It is found that although TrTPFB exhibits higher doping efficiency, OSCs doped with DMA-TPFB achieve comparable or even enhanced electrical conductivity. Indeed, the electrical conductivity of DMA-TPFB-doped P3HT reaches over 67 S cm-1, which is a record-high value for mixed-solution-doped P3HT. This can be attributed to DMA-TPFB inducing a higher degree of crystallinity and reduced structural disorder. Moreover, the beneficial impact of DMA-TPFB on the OSC films' morphology and structure results in superior thermoelectric performance in the doped OSCs. These findings highlight the significance of dopant-induced morphological and structural considerations in enhancing the film characteristics of OSCs, opening up a new avenue for optimization of dopant performance.

A Universal, Highly Stable Dopant System for Organic Semiconductors Based on Lewis-Paired Dopant Complexes

Chemical doping of organic semiconductors is an essential enabler for applications in electronic and energy-conversion devices such as thermoelectrics. Here, Lewis-paired complexes are advanced as high-performance dopants that address all the principal drawbacks of conventional dopants in terms of limited electrical conductivity, thermal stability, and generality. The study focuses on the Lewis acid B(C6F5)3 (BCF) and 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4TCNQ) bearing Lewis-basic -CN groups. Due to its high electron affinity, BCF:F4TCNQ dopes an exceptionally wide range of organic semiconductors, over 20 of which are investigated. Complex activation and microstructure control lead to conductivities for poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) exceeding 300 and 900 S cm-1 for isotropic and chain-oriented films, respectively, resulting in a 10 to 50 times larger thermoelectric power factor compared to those obtained with neat dopants. Moreover, BCF:F4TCNQ-doped P3HT exhibits a 3-fold higher thermal dedoping activation energy compared to that obtained with neat dopants and at least a factor of 10 better operational stability.

Sequential Cascade Doping of Conjugated-Polymer-Wrapped Carbon Nanotubes for Highly Electrically Conductive Platforms

To explore a highly conductive flexible platform, this study develops PIDF-BT@SWCNT by wrapping single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with a conjugated polymer, PIDF-BT, known for its effective doping properties. By evaluating the doping behaviors of various dopants on PIDF-BT, appropriate dopant combinations for cascade doping are selected to improve the doping efficiency of PIDF-BT@SWCNT. Specifically, using F4TCNQ or F6TCNNQ as the first dopant, followed by AuCl3 as the second dopant, demonstrates remarkable doping efficiency, surpassing that of the individual dopants and yielding an exceptional electrical conductivity exceeding 6000 S/cm. Characterization using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy elucidates the doping mechanism, revealing an increase in the proportion of electron-donating atoms and the ratio of quinoid structures upon F4TCNQ/AuCl3 cascade doping. These findings offer insights into optimizing dopant combinations for cascade doping, showcasing its advantages in enhancing doping efficiency and resulting electrical conductivity compared with single dopant processes.

The Latest Advances in Ink-Based Nanogenerators: From Materials to Applications

Nanogenerators possess the capability to harvest faint energy from the environment. Among them, thermoelectric (TE), triboelectric, piezoelectric (PE), and moisture-enabled nanogenerators represent promising approaches to micro-nano energy collection. These nanogenerators have seen considerable progress in material optimization and structural design. Printing technology has facilitated the large-scale manufacturing of nanogenerators. Although inks can be compatible with most traditional functional materials, this inevitably leads to a decrease in the electrical performance of the materials, necessitating control over the rheological properties of the inks. Furthermore, printing technology offers increased structural design flexibility. This review provides a comprehensive framework for ink-based nanogenerators, encompassing ink material optimization and device structural design, including improvements in ink performance, control of rheological properties, and efficient energy harvesting structures. Additionally, it highlights ink-based nanogenerators that incorporate textile technology and hybrid energy technologies, reviewing their latest advancements in energy collection and self-powered sensing. The discussion also addresses the main challenges faced and future directions for development.

Dopant Enhanced Conjugated Polymer Thin Film for Low-Power, Flexible and Wearable DMMP Sensor

Conjugated polymer has the potential to be applied on flexible devices as an active layer, but further investigation is still hindered by poor conductivity and mechanical stability. Here, this work demonstrates a dopant-enhanced conductive polymer thin film and its application in dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) sensor. Among five comparable polymers this work employs, poly(bisdodecylthioquaterthiophene) (PQTS12) achieves the highest doping efficiency after doped by FeCl3, with the conductivity increasing by about five orders of magnitude. The changes in Young's modulus are also considered to optimize the conductivity and flexibility of this thin film, and finally the decay of conductivity is only 9.2% after 3000 times of mechanical bending. This work applies this thin film as the active layer of the DMMP gas sensor, which could be operated under 1 mV driving voltage and 28 nW power consumption, with a sustainable durability against bending and compression. In addition, this sensor is provided with alarm capability while exposed to the DMMP atmospheres at different hazard levels. This work expects that this general approach could offer solutions for the fabrication of low-power and flexible gas sensors, and provide guidance for next-generation wearable devices with broader applications.

Self-Doping Naphthalene Diimide Conjugated Polymers for Flexible Unipolar n-Type OTFTs

The development of high-performance organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) materials is vital for flexible electronics. Numerous OTFTs are so far reported but obtaining high-performance and reliable OTFTs simultaneously for flexible electronics is still challenging. Herein, it is reported that self-doping in conjugated polymer enables high unipolar n-type charge mobility in flexible OTFTs, as well as good operational/ambient stability and bending resistance. New naphthalene diimide (NDI)-conjugated polymers PNDI2T-NM17 and PNDI2T-NM50 with different contents of self-doping groups on their side chains are designed and synthesized. The effects of self-doping on the electronic properties of resulting flexible OTFTs are investigated. The results reveal that the flexible OTFTs based on self-doped PNDI2T-NM17 exhibit unipolar n-type charge-carrier properties and good operational/ambient stability thanks to the appropriate doping level and intermolecular interactions. The charge mobility and on/off ratio are fourfold and four orders of magnitude higher than those of undoped model polymer, respectively. Overall, the proposed self-doping strategy is useful for rationally designing OTFT materials with high semiconducting performance and reliability.

Side-Chain-Assisted Transition of Conjugated Polymers from a Semiconductor to Conductor and Comparison of Their NO2 Sensing Characteristics

To investigate the effect of a side chain on the electrical properties of a conjugated polymer (CP), we designed two different CPs containing alkyl and ethylene glycol (EG) derivatives as side chains on the same conjugated backbone with an electron donor-acceptor (D-A) type chain configuration. PTQ-T with an alkyl side chain showed typical p-type semiconducting properties, whereas PTQ-TEG with an EG-based side chain exhibited electrically conductive behavior. Both CPs generated radical species owing to their strong D-A type conjugated structure; however, the spin density was much greater in PTQ-TEG. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that the O atoms of the EG-based side chains in PTQ-TEG were intercalated with the conjugated backbone and increased the carrier density. Upon application to a field-effect transistor sensor for PTQ-T and resistive sensor for PTQ-TEG, PTQ-TEG exhibited a better NO₂ detection capability with faster signal recovery characteristics than PTQ-T. Compared with the relatively rigid alkyl side chains of PTQ-T, the flexible EG-based side chains in PTQ-TEG have a higher potential to enlarge the free volume as well as improve NO₂-affinity, which promotes the diffusion of NO₂ in and out of the PTQ-TEG film, and ultimately resulting in better NO₂ detection capabilities.

Dithieno[3,2-f:2',3'-h]quinoxaline-Based Photovoltaic-Thermoelectric Dual-Functional Energy-Harvesting Wide-Bandgap Polymer and its Backbone Isomer

Both organic solar cells (OSCs) and organic thermoelectrics (OTEs) are promising energy-harvesting technologies for future renewable and sustainable energy sources. Among various material systems, organic conjugated polymers are an emerging material class for the active layers of both OSCs and OTEs. However, organic conjugated polymers showing both OSC and OTE properties are rarely reported because of the different requirements toward the OSCs and OTEs. In this study, the first simultaneous investigation of the OSC and OTE properties of a wide-bandgap polymer PBQx-TF and its backbone isomer iso-PBQx-TF are reported. All wide-bandgap polymers form face-on orientations in a thin-film state, but PBQx-TF has more of a crystalline character than iso-PBQx-TF, originating from the backbone isomeric structures of α,α '/β,β '-connection between two thiophene rings. Additionally, iso-PBQx-TF shows inactive OSC and poor OTE properties, probably because of the absorption mismatch and unfavorable molecular orientations. At the same time, PBQx-TF exhibits both decent OSC and OTE performances, indicating that it satisfies the requirements for both OSCs and OTEs. This study presents the OSC and OTE dual-functional energy-harvesting wide-bandgap polymer and the future research directions for hybrid energy-harvesting materials.

Novel Dithienopyrrole-Based Conjugated Copolymers: Importance of Backbone Planarity in Achieving High Electrical Conductivity and Thermoelectric Performance

The development of conjugated polymers with structures that are suitable for efficient molecular doping and charge transport is a key challenge in the construction of high-performance conjugated polymer-based thermoelectric devices. In this study, three novel conjugated polymers based on dithienopyrrole (DTP) are synthesized and their thermoelectric properties are compared. When doped with p-dopant, a donor-acceptor type copolymer, DPP-MeDTP, exhibits higher electrical conductivity and thermoelectric power factor compared to the other donor-donor type copolymers. The high electrical conductivity of DPP-MeDTP compared to the other polymers originates from the high degree of backbone planarity and molecular order, which contributes to its high charge carrier mobility. In addition, the highly crystalline structure of DPP-MeDTP is well maintained upon doping, while the crystalline order of the other polymers decreases significantly upon doping. The findings of this work not only provide insights into the design of DTP-based conjugated polymers for thermoelectric use but also demonstrate the significance of a high degree of molecular order and structural robustness upon doping to achieve high thermoelectric performance. Achieving Efficient p-Type Organic Thermoelectrics by Modulation of Acceptor Unit in Photovoltaic π-Conjugated Copolymers

π-Conjugated donor (D)-acceptor (A) copolymers have been extensively studied as organic photovoltaic (OPV) donors yet remain largely unexplored in organic thermoelectrics (OTEs) despite their outstanding mechanical bendability, solution processability and flexible molecular design. Importantly, they feature high Seebeck coefficient (S) that are desirable in room-temperature wearable application scenarios under small temperature gradients. In this work, the authors have systematically investigated a series of D-A semiconducting copolymers possessing various electron-deficient A-units (e.g., BDD, TT, DPP) towards efficient OTEs. Upon p-type ferric chloride (FeCl3 ) doping, the relationship between the thermoelectric characteristics and the electron-withdrawing ability of A-unit is largely elucidated. It is revealed that a strong D-A nature tends to induce an energetic disorder along the π-backbone, leading to an enlarged separation of the transport and Fermi levels, and consequently an increase of S. Meanwhile, the highly electron-deficient A-unit would impair electron transfer from D-unit to p-type dopants, thus decreasing the doping efficiency and electrical conductivity (σ). Ultimately, the peak power factor (PF) at room-temperature is obtained as high as 105.5 µW m-1 K-2 with an outstanding S of 247 µV K-1 in a paradigm OPV donor PBDB-T, which holds great potential in wearable electronics driven by a small temperature gradient.

Doping Approaches for Organic Semiconductors

Electronic doping in organic materials has remained an elusive concept for several decades. It drew considerable attention in the early days in the quest for organic materials with high electrical conductivity, paving the way for the pioneering work on pristine organic semiconductors (OSCs) and their eventual use in a plethora of applications. Despite this early trend, however, recent strides in the field of organic electronics have been made hand in hand with the development and use of dopants to the point that are now ubiquitous. Here, we give an overview of all important advances in the area of doping of organic semiconductors and their applications. We first review the relevant literature with particular focus on the physical processes involved, discussing established mechanisms but also newly proposed theories. We then continue with a comprehensive summary of the most widely studied dopants to date, placing particular emphasis on the chemical strategies toward the synthesis of molecules with improved functionality. The processing routes toward doped organic films and the important doping-processing-nanostructure relationships, are also discussed. We conclude the review by highlighting how doping can enhance the operating characteristics of various organic devices.

NO2-Affinitive Conjugated Polymer for Selective Sub-Parts-Per-Billion NO2 Detection in a Field-Effect Transistor Sensor

Conjugated polymers (CPs) have provided versatile semiconducting implements for the development of soft electronic devices. When three CPs with the same conjugated framework but different side chains were adopted in the field-effect transistor (FET) sensor for NO₂ detection, the response to NO₂ showed an opposite tendency to the charge carrier mobility of each CP. Morphological and structural characterizations revealed that the flexible glycol side chain enhances NO₂ affinity as well as prevents the formation of lamellar stacking of the CP chains, thereby providing routes for the facile diffusion of NO₂. Additionally, theoretical calculations for CP-NO₂ complex formation at the molecular level support the relatively low energy barrier for inter-chain transition of NO₂ between the glycol-based conjugated frameworks, which implies the spontaneous internal diffusion of NO₂ to the semiconductor-dielectric interface in the FET-based sensor. As a result, the CP with a NO₂-affinitive morphology exhibited an exceptional sensitivity of 13.8%/ppb upon NO₂ (100 ppb) exposure for 50 s and provided excellent selectivity to the FET-based sensor toward other environmentally abundant harmful gases, such as SO₂, CO₂, and NH₃. In particular, the theoretic limit of detection reached down to 0.24 ppb, which is the lowest value ever reported for organic FET-based NO₂ gas sensors.
