Review: Application of Bionic-Structured Materials in Solid-State Electrolytes for High-Performance Lithium Metal Batteries

Solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) have gained significant attention in energy storage research due to their high energy density and significantly improved safety. But there are still certain problems with lithium dendrite growth, interface stability, and room-temperature practicality. Nature continually inspires human development and intricate design strategies to achieve optimal structural applications. Innovative solid-state electrolytes (SSEs), inspired by diverse natural species, have demonstrated exceptional physical, chemical, and mechanical properties. This review provides an overview of typical bionic-structured materials in SSEs, particularly those mimicking plant and animal structures, with a focus on their latest advancements in applications of solid-state lithium metal batteries. Commencing from plant structures encompassing roots, trunks, leaves, flowers, fruits, and cellular levels, the detailed influence of biomimetic strategies on SSE design and electrochemical performance are presented in this review. Subsequently, the recent progress of animal-inspired nanostructures in SSEs is summarized, including layered structures, surface morphologies, and interface compatibility in both two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) aspects. Finally, we also evaluate the current challenges and provide a concise outlook on future research directions. We anticipate that the review will provide useful information for future reference regarding the design of bionic-structured materials in SSEs.

Fluorinated Surface Engineering Towards High-Rate and Durable Potassium-Ion Battery

Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) crucially affects the rate performance and cycling lifespan, yet to date more extensive research is still needed in potassium-ion batteries. We report an ultra-thin and KF-enriched SEI triggered by tuned fluorinated surface design in electrode. Our results reveal that fluorination engineering alters the interfacial chemical environment to facilitate inherited electronic conductivity, enhance adsorption ability of potassium, induce localized surface polarization to guide electrolyte decomposition behavior for SEI formation, and especially, enrich the KF crystals in SEI by self-sacrifice from C-F bond cleavage. Hence, the regulated fluorinated electrode with generated ultra-thin, uniform, and KF-enriched SEI shows improved capacity of 439.3 mAh g-1 (3.82 mAh cm-2), boosted rate performance (202.3 mAh g-1 at 8.70 mA cm-2) and durable cycling performance (even under high loading of ~8.7 mg cm-2). We expect this practical engineering principle to open up new opportunities for upgrading the development of potassium-ion batteries.

Bio-Inspired Electrodes with Rational Spatiotemporal Management for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are currently the predominant energy storage power source. However, the urgent issues of enhancing electrochemical performance, prolonging lifetime, preventing thermal runaway-caused fires, and intelligent application are obstacles to their applications. Herein, bio-inspired electrodes owning spatiotemporal management of self-healing, fast ion transport, fire-extinguishing, thermoresponsive switching, recycling, and flexibility are overviewed comprehensively, showing great promising potentials in practical application due to the significantly enhanced durability and thermal safety of LIBs. Taking advantage of the self-healing core-shell structures, binders, capsules, or liquid metal alloys, these electrodes can maintain the mechanical integrity during the lithiation-delithiation cycling. After the incorporation of fire-extinguishing binders, current collectors, or capsules, flame retardants can be released spatiotemporally during thermal runaway to ensure safety. Thermoresponsive switching electrodes are also constructed though adding thermally responsive components, which can rapidly switch LIB off under abnormal conditions and resume their functions quickly when normal operating conditions return. Finally, the challenges of bio-inspired electrode designs are presented to optimize the spatiotemporal management of LIBs. It is anticipated that the proposed electrodes with spatiotemporal management will not only promote industrial application, but also strengthen the fundamental research of bionics in energy storage.

Rechargeable Metal-Sulfur Batteries: Key Materials to Mechanisms

Rechargeable metal-sulfur batteries are considered promising candidates for energy storage due to their high energy density along with high natural abundance and low cost of raw materials. However, they could not yet be practically implemented due to several key challenges: (i) poor conductivity of sulfur and the discharge product metal sulfide, causing sluggish redox kinetics, (ii) polysulfide shuttling, and (iii) parasitic side reactions between the electrolyte and the metal anode. To overcome these obstacles, numerous strategies have been explored, including modifications to the cathode, anode, electrolyte, and binder. In this review, the fundamental principles and challenges of metal-sulfur batteries are first discussed. Second, the latest research on metal-sulfur batteries is presented and discussed, covering their material design, synthesis methods, and electrochemical performances. Third, emerging advanced characterization techniques that reveal the working mechanisms of metal-sulfur batteries are highlighted. Finally, the possible future research directions for the practical applications of metal-sulfur batteries are discussed. This comprehensive review aims to provide experimental strategies and theoretical guidance for designing and understanding the intricacies of metal-sulfur batteries; thus, it can illuminate promising pathways for progressing high-energy-density metal-sulfur battery systems.

Electrochemical coupling in subnanometer pores/channels for rechargeable batteries

Subnanometer pores/channels (SNPCs) play crucial roles in regulating electrochemical redox reactions for rechargeable batteries. The delicately designed and tailored porous structure of SNPCs not only provides ample space for ion storage but also facilitates efficient ion diffusion within the electrodes in batteries, which can greatly improve the electrochemical performance. However, due to current technological limitations, it is challenging to synthesize and control the quality, storage, and transport of nanopores at the subnanometer scale, as well as to understand the relationship between SNPCs and performances. In this review, we systematically classify and summarize materials with SNPCs from a structural perspective, dividing them into one-dimensional (1D) SNPCs, two-dimensional (2D) SNPCs, and three-dimensional (3D) SNPCs. We also unveil the unique physicochemical properties of SNPCs and analyse electrochemical couplings in SNPCs for rechargeable batteries, including cathodes, anodes, electrolytes, and functional materials. Finally, we discuss the challenges that SNPCs may face in electrochemical reactions in batteries and propose future research directions.

A Perspective of Bioinspired Interfaces Applied in Renewable Energy Storage and Conversion Devices

The natural world renders a large number of opportunities to design intriguing structures and fascinating functions for innovations of advanced surfaces and interfaces. Currently, bioinspired interfaces have attracted much attention in practical applications of renewable energy storage and conversion devices including rechargeable batteries, fuel cells, dye-sensitized solar cells, and supercapacitors. By mimicking miscellaneous natural creatures, many novel bioinspired interfaces with various components, structures, morphology, and configurations are exerted on the devices' electrodes, electrolytes, additives, separators, and catalyst matrixes, resorting to their wonderful mechanical, optical, electrical, physical, chemical, and electrochemical features compared with the corresponding traditional modes. In this Perspective, the principles of designing bioinspired interfaces are discussed with respect to biomimetic chemical components, physical morphologies, biochemical reactions, and macrobiomimetic assembly configurations. A brief summary, subsequently, is mainly focused on the recent progress on bioinspired interfaces applied in key materials for rechargeable batteries. Ultimately, a critical comment is projected on significant opportunities and challenges existing in the future development course of bioinspired interfaces. It is expected that this Perspective is able to provide a profound perception into some underlying artificial intelligent energy storage and conversion device design as a promising candidate to resolve the global energy crisis and environmental pollution.

Plant Leaf-Inspired Separators with Hierarchical Structure and Exquisite Fluidic Channels for Dendrite-Free Lithium Metal Batteries

Lithium (Li) metal batteries are among the most promising devices for high energy storage applications but suffer from severe and irregular Li dendrite growth. Here, it is demonstrated that the issue can be well tackled by precisely designing the leaf-like membrane with hierarchical structure and exquisite fluidic channels. As a proof of concept, plant leaf-inspired membrane (PLIM) separators are prepared using natural attapulgite nanorods. The PLIM separators feature super-electrolyte-philicity, high thermal stability and high ion-selectivity. Thus, the separators can guide uniform and directed Li growth on the Li anode. The Li//PLIM//Li cell with limited Li anode shows high Coulombic efficiency and cycling stability over 1500 h with small overpotential and interface impedance. The Li//PLIM//S battery exhibits high initial capacity (1352 mAh g-1 ), cycling stability (0.019% capacity decay per cycle at 1 C over 500 cycles), rate performance (673 mAh g-1 at 4 C), and high operating temperature (65 °C). The separators can also effectively improve reversibility and cycling stability of the Li/Li cell and Li//LFP battery with carbonate-based electrolyte. As such, this work provides fresh insights into the design of bioinspired separators for dendrite-free metal batteries.

Membrane-based imprinted sites for achieving specific molecule transport and precise recognition have great potential to revolutionize nanofiltration technology. Nonetheless, how to efficiently prepare imprinted membrane structures with accurate identification - ultrafast molecular transport - high stability in mobile phase remains a key issue and serious challenge. Herein, we have developed a dual-activation strategy to constructing nanofluid-functionalized membranes with double imprinted nanoscale channels (NMDINCs), realizing ultrafast transport performance as well as structure&size-exclusion selectivity in allusion to particular compounds. The resultant NMDINCs, founded on principal nanofluid-functionalized construction companied by the boronate affinity sol-gel imprinting systems, illustrated that delicate regulation towards polymerization framework as well as functionalization belonging to distinctive membrane structures was crucial for realizing ultrafast molecules transport combined with prominent molecules selectivity. Design, Manufacturing and Functions of Pore-Structured Materials: From Biomimetics to Artificial

Porous structures with light weight and high mechanical performance exist widely in the tissues of animals and plants. Biomimetic materials with those porous structures have been well-developed, and their highly specific surfaces can be further used in functional integration. However, most porous structures in those tissues can hardly be entirely duplicated, and their complex structure-performance relationship may still be not fully understood. The key challenges in promoting the applications of biomimetic porous materials are to figure out the essential factors in hierarchical porous structures and to develop matched preparation methods to control those factors precisely. Hence, this article reviews the existing methods to prepare biomimetic porous structures. Then, the well-proved effects of micropores, mesopores, and macropores on their various properties are introduced, including mechanical, electric, magnetic, thermotics, acoustic, and chemical properties. The advantages and disadvantages of hierarchical porous structures and their preparation methods are deeply evaluated. Focusing on those disadvantages and aiming to improve the performance and functions, we summarize several modification strategies and discuss the possibility of replacing biomimetic porous structures with meta-structures.
