Sulfur-Defect-Induced TiS1.94 as a High-Capacity and Long-Life Anode Material for Zinc-Ion Batteries

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are competitive among the elective candidates for electrochemical energy storage systems, but the intrinsic drawbacks of zinc metal anodes such as dendrites and corrosion severely hinder their large-scale application. Developing alternative anode materials capable of high reversibility and stability for storing Zn2+ ions is a feasible approach to circumvent the challenge. Herein, a sulfur-defect-induced TiS1.94 (D-TiS1.94) as a promising intercalation anode material for ZIBs is designed. The abundant Zn2+-storage active sites and lower Zn2+ migration barrier induced by sulfur defects endow D-TiS1.94 with a high capacity for Zn2+-storage (219.1 mA h g-1 at 0.05 A g-1) and outstanding rate capability (107.3 mA h g-1 at 5 A g-1). In addition, a slight volume change of 8.1% is identified upon Zn2+ storage, which favors a prolonged cycling life (50.3% capacity remaining in 1500 cycles). More significantly, the D-TiS1.94||ZnxMnO2 full battery demonstrates a high discharge capacity of 155.7 mA h g-1 with a capacity retention of 59.8% in 400 cycles. It has been estimated that the high-capacity, low-operation voltage, and long-life D-TiS1.94 can be a promising component of the ZIB anode material family, and the strategy proposed in this work will provide guidance to the defect engineering of high-performance electrode materials toward energy storage applications.

Novel Binder with Cross-Linking Reconfiguration Functionality for Silicon Anodes of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Silicon is expected to be used as a high theoretical capacity anode material in lithium-ion batteries with high energy densities. However, the huge volume change incurred when silicon de-embeds lithium ions, leading to destruction of the electrode structure and a rapid reduction in battery capacity. Although binders play a key role in maintaining the stability of the electrode structure, commonly used binders cannot withstand the large volume expansion of the silicon. To alleviate this problem, we propose a PGC cross-linking reconfiguration binder based on poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), gelatin (GN), and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). Within PGC, PAA supports the main chain and provides a large number of carboxyl groups (-COOH), GN provides rich carboxyl and amide groups that can form a cross-linking network with PAA, and β-CD offers rich hydroxyl groups and a cone-shaped hollow ring structure that can alleviate stress accumulation in the polymer chain by forming a new dynamic cross-linking coordination conformation during stretching. In the half cell, the silicon negative prepared by the PGC binder exhibited a high specific capacity and capacity maintenance ratio, and the specific capacity of the silicon negative electrode prepared by the PGC binder is still 1809 mAh g-1 and the capacity maintenance ratio is 73.76% following 200 cycles at 2 A g-1 current density, indicating that PGC sufficiently maintains the silicon negative structure during the battery cycle. The PGC binder has a simple preparation method and good capacity retention ability, making it a potential reference for the further development of silicon negative electrodes.

Heterogeneous-Structured Molybdenum Diboride as a Novel and Promising Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

With the development of electric vehicles, exploiting anode materials with high capacity and fast charging capability is an urgent requirement for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Borophene, with the merits of high capacity, high electronic conductivity and fast diffusion kinetics, holds great potential as anode for LIBs. However, it is difficult to fabricate for the intrinsic electron-deficiency of boron atom. Herein, heterogeneous-structured MoB2 (h-MoB2 ) with amorphous shell and crystalline core, is prepared by solid phase molten salt method. As demonstrated, crystalline core can encapsulate the honeycomb borophene within two adjacent Mo atoms, and amorphous shell can accommodate more lithium ions to strengthen the lithium storage capacity and diffusion kinetics. According to theoretical calculations, the lithium adsorption energy in MoB2 is about -2.7 eV, and the lithium diffusion energy barrier in MoB2 is calculated to be 0.199 eV, guaranteeing the enhanced adsorption capability and fast diffusion kinetic behavior of Li+ ions. As a result, h-MoB2 anode presents high capacity of 798 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 , excellent rate performance of 183 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1 and long-term cyclic stability for 1200 cycles. This work may inspire ideas for the fabrication of borophene analogs and two-dimensional metal borides.

Interfacial Regulation toward Efficient CsPbBr3 Quantum Dot-Based Inverted Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Inverted perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) based on quantum dots (QDs) are some of the most promising candidates for next-generation lighting and display applications. Due to the strong fluorescence quenching caused by zinc oxide, high performance in such inverted devices remains challenging. Here, we report an efficient inverted green CsPbBr3 QDs LED using an emitting buffer layer. Ultrathin CsPbBr3 QD emitters act as the buffer layer to reduce the interface luminescence quenching reaction at the ZnO/upper emitting layer interface, increasing the probability of exciton recombination within the emissive layer and regulating the charge transport, leading to effective carrier recombination. The resulting device exhibits an external quantum efficiency of 13.1%, enhanced by about 4.7 times compared with that without a buffer layer device. This work provides a path to fabricating high-performance inverted PeLEDs.

Power Profile during Cycling in World Triathlon Series and Olympic Games

This study aimed to analyze the power profile (PP) during the cycling segment of international-level triathletes in the World Triathlon Series (WTS) and Olympics and to evaluate the influence of circuit type, race distance (Sprint or Olympic distance) and race dynamics on the development of the cycling leg and the final race position. Four male triathletes participated in the study. Twenty races were analyzed using geolocation technology and power-meter data to analyze PP, race dynamics, and course characteristics. Before the races, incremental tests of volitional exhaustion with gas analysis were performed to determine power intensity zones. Nonparametric Mann-Whitney U tests and correlation analyses were conducted to identify differences and relationships between various variables. A correlation between the time spent above maximal aerobic power (MAP) and dangerous curves per kilometer (r = 0.46; p < 0.05) and bike split result (BSR) (r = -0.50; p < 0.05) was observed. Also, moderate correlation was found between BSR and the final race position (r = 0.46; p < 0.01). No differences were found between sprint and Olympic distance races in any variable. Power output variability, influenced by technical circuit segments, remains the main characteristic in international short-distance races. The results of the present study suggest that the triathletes who are better adapted to intermittent high intensity efforts perform better cycling legs at international high-level races.

High Performance Thermoelectric Power of Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 Through Synergistic Cu2GeSe3 and Se Incorporations

Bi2Te3-based alloys are the benchmark for commercial thermoelectric (TE) materials, the widespread demand for low-grade waste heat recovery and solid-state refrigeration makes it imperative to enhance the figure-of-merits. In this study, high-performance Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 (BST) is realized by incorporating Cu2GeSe3 and Se. Concretely, the diffusion of Cu and Ge atoms optimizes the hole concentration and raises the density-of-states effective mass (md *), compensating for the loss of "donor-like effect" exacerbated by ball milling. The subsequent Se addition further increases md *, enabling a total 28% improvement of room-temperature power factor (S2σ), reaching 43.6 µW cm-1 K-2 compared to the matrix. Simultaneously, the lattice thermal conductivity is also significantly suppressed by multiscale scattering sources represented by Cu-rich nanoparticles and dislocation arrays. The synergistic effects yield a peak ZT of 1.41 at 350 K and an average ZT of 1.23 (300-500 K) in the Bi0.5Sb1.5Te2.94Se0.06 + 0.11 wt.% Cu2GeSe3 sample. More importantly, the integrated 17-pair TE module achieves a conversion efficiency of 6.4%, 80% higher than the commercial one at ΔT = 200 K. These results validate that the facile composition optimization of the BST/Cu2GeSe3/Se is a promising strategy to improve the application of BST-based TE modules.

Recent Progress in Modification of Polyphenylene Oxide for Application in High-Frequency Communication

With the rapid development of highly integrated electronic devices and high-frequency microwave communication technology, the parasitic resistance-capacitance (RC) delay and propagation loss severely restrict the development of a high-frequency communication system. Benefiting from its low dielectric constants (Dk) and low dielectric loss factor (Df), polyphenylene oxide (PPO) has attracted widespread attention for its application in the dielectric layers of integrated circuits. However, PPO suffers from a very high melting viscosity, a larger coefficient of thermal expansion than copper wire and poor solvent resistance. Recently, many efforts have focused on the modification of PPO by various means for communication applications. However, review articles focusing on PPO are unexpectedly limited. In this article, the research progress concerning PPO materials in view of the modification of PPO has been summarized. The following aspects are covered: polymerization and design of special chemical structure, low molecular weight PPO and blending with thermosetting resin, hyperbranched PPO, thermosetting PPO and incorporating with fillers. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of various types of modification methods and their applications are compared, and the possible future development directions are also proposed. It is believed that this review will arouse the interest of the electronics industry because of the detailed summary of the cutting-edge modification technology for PPO.

High-Resolution Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diodes by Electrohydrodynamic Printing

Quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) have attracted increasing attention due to their excellent electroluminescent properties and compatibility with inkjet printing processes, which show great potential in applications of pixelated displays. However, the relatively low resolution of the inkjet printing technology limits its further development. In this paper, high-resolution QLEDs were successfully fabricated by electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing. A pixelated quantum dot (QD) emission layer was formed by printing an insulating Teflon mesh on a spin-coated QD layer. The patterned QLEDs show a high resolution of 2540 pixels per inch (PPI), with a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 20.29% and brightness of 35816 cd/m2. To further demonstrate its potential in full-color display, the fabrication process for the QD layer was changed from spin-coating to EHD printing. The as-printed Teflon effectively blocked direct contact between the hole transport layer and the electron transport layer, thus preventing leakage currents. As a result, the device showed a resolution of 1692 PPI with a maximum EQE of 15.40%. To the best of our knowledge, these results represent the highest resolution and efficiency of pixelated QLEDs using inkjet printing or EHD printing, which demonstrates its huge potential in the application of high-resolution full-color displays.

Improvement in Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting Performance of GaN-nanowire Photoanode Using MXene

The photoelectrochemical water splitting (PEC-WS) performance of a photoanode consisting of GaN nanowires (NWs) is significantly improved using a Ti3C2-MXene coating as an intermediate layer to promote carrier transfer toward the electrolyte. The maximum current density and applied-bias photon-to-current efficiency of the photoanode comprising GaN NWs coated with Ti3C2-MXene (MGNWs) are measured to be 34.24 mA/cm2 and 14.47% at 1.2 and 0.4 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), respectively. These values are much higher than those of the GaN-NW photoanode without Ti3C2-MXene (4.04 mA/cm2 and 1.95%) and also markedly exceed those of previously reported photoanodes. After 8 days of PEC-WS, the current density was measured to be 31.07 mA/cm2, which corresponds to 97.58% of that measured immediately after the reaction started. Based on the time dependence of the current density, the hydrogen evolution rate over the reaction time is calculated to be 0.58 mmol/cm2·h. The results confirm that the PEC-WS performance of the optimized MGNW photoanode is superior to and more stable than those of previously reported photoanodes.

Bicyclopentadithiophene-Based Organic Semiconductor for Stable and High-Performance Perovskite Solar Cells Exceeding 22

Well-performing organic-inorganic halide perovskites are susceptible to poor efficiency and instability due to their various defects at the interphases, grain boundaries (GBs), and surfaces. In this study, an in situ method is utilized for effectively passivating the under-coordinated Pb2+ defects of perovskite with new non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) (INXBCDT; X = H, Cl, and Br) through their carbonyl and cyano functional groups during the antisolvent dripping process. It reveals that the bicyclopentadithiophene (BCDT) core with highly electron-withdrawing end-capping groups passivates GBs and boosts perovskite grain growth. This effective defect passivation decreases the trap density to increase the carrier recombination lifetime of the perovskite film. As a result, bromo-substituted dicyanomethylene indanone (INBr)-end-capped BCDT (INBrBCDT-b8; 3a)-passivated devices exhibit the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.20% (vs those of 18.09% obtained for perovskite films without passivation) upon an optimized film preparation process. Note that devices treated with more soluble 2-ethylhexyl-substituted compounds (1a, 2a, and 3a) exhibit higher PCE than those treated with less soluble octyl-substituted compounds (1b, 2b, and 3b). It is also worth noting that BCDT is a cost-effective six-ring core that is easier to synthesize with a higher yield and therefore much cheaper than those with highly fused-ring cores. In addition, a long-term stability test in a glovebox for 1500 h reveals that the perovskite solar cells (PSCs) based on a perovskite absorber treated with compound 3a maintain ∼90% of their initial PCE. This is the first example of the simplest high-conjugation additive for perovskite film to achieve a PCE greater than 22% of the corresponding lead-based PSCs.

Advance of microfluidic flow cytometry enabling high-throughput characterization of single-cell electrical and structural properties

This paper reported a micro flow cytometer capable of high-throughput characterization of single-cell electrical and structural features based on constrictional microchannels and deep neural networks. When single cells traveled through microchannels with constricted cross-sectional areas, they effectively blocked concentrated electric field lines, producing large impedance variations. Meanwhile, the traveling cells were confined within the cross-sectional areas of the constrictional microchannels, enabling the capture of high-quality images without losing focuses. Then single-cell features from impedance profiles and optical images were extracted from customized recurrent and convolution networks (RNN and CNN), which were further fused for cell-type classification based on support vector machines (SVM). As a demonstration, two leukemia cell lines (e.g., HL60 vs. Jurkat) were analyzed, producing high-classification accuracies of 99.3% based on electrical features extracted from Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) of RNN, 96.7% based on structural features extracted from Resnet18 of CNN and 100.0% based on combined features enabled by SVM. The microfluidic flow cytometry developed in this study may provide a new perspective for the field of single-cell analysis.

Evolutionary Reinforcement of Polymer Networks: A Stepwise-Enhanced Strategy for Ultrarobust Eutectogels

Gel materials are appealing due to their diverse applications in biomedicine, soft electronics, sensors, and actuators. Nevertheless, the existing synthetic gels are often plagued by feeble network structures and inherent defects associated with solvents, which compromise their mechanical load-bearing capacity and cast persistent doubts about their reliability. Herein, combined with attractive deep eutectic solvent (DES), a stepwise-enhanced strategy is presented to fabricate ultrarobust eutectogels. It focuses on the continuous modulation and optimization of polymer networks through complementary annealing and solvent exchange processes, which drives a progressive increase in both quantity and mass of the interconnected polymer chains at microscopic scale, hence contributing to the evolutionary enhancement of network structure. The resultant eutectogel exhibits superb mechanical properties, including record-breaking strength (31.8 MPa), toughness (76.0 MJ m-3 ), and Young's modulus (25.6 MPa), together with exceptional resistance ability to tear and crack propagation. Moreover, this eutectogel is able to be further programmed through photolithography to in situ create patterned eutectogel for imparting specific functionalities. Enhanced by its broad applicability to various DES combinations, this stepwise-enhanced strategy is poised to serve as a crucial template and methodology for the future development of robust gels.

Charge Dispersion Strategy for High-Performance and Rain-Proof Triboelectric Nanogenerator

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is becoming a sustainable and renewable way of energy harvesting and self-powered sensing because of low cost, simple structure, and high efficiency. However, the output current of existing TENGs is still low. It is proposed that the output current of TENGs can be dramatically improved if the triboelectric charges can distribute inside the triboelectric layers. Herein, a novel single-electrode conductive network-based TENG (CN-TENG) is developed by introducing a conductive network of multiwalled carbon nanotubes in dielectric triboelectric layer of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). In this CN-TENG, the contact electrification-induced charges distribute on both the surface and interior of the dielectric TPU layer. Thus, the short-circuit current of CN-TENG improves for 100-fold, compared with that of traditional dielectric TENG. In addition, this CN-TENG, even without packing, can work stably in high-humidity environments and even in the rain, which is another main challenge for conventional TENGs due to charge leakage. Further, this CN-TENG is applied for the first time, to successfully distinguish conductive and dielectric materials. This work provides a new and effective strategy to fabricate TENGs with high output current and humidity-resistivity, greatly expanding their practical applications in energy harvesting, movement sensing, human-machine interaction, and so on.

Differences in pacing behaviour between global championship medal performances and world records in men's and women's middle- and long-distance running track events

The differences in pacing demands between track distance-running championship and meet (e.g., World Record [WR]) races have not been specified yet in the current literature. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine pacing behaviour differences between WRs and global championship (i.e., World Championships and Olympic Games) medal performances (GCMs) in middle- and long-distance running events. Percentages of mean race section speeds were compared through analysis of variance between men's and women's 169 WRs and 189 GCMs over 800 m, 1500 m, 3000 m steeplechase, 5000 m and 10,000 m. U-shaped and negative pacing approaches are observed during men's and women's 1500 m WRs and GCMs, respectively. The first and third 400 m of men's and women's 1500 m GCMs were relatively slower and faster, respectively (p ≤ 0.05, 1.31 ≤ d ≤ 1.69). Even profiles are followed during women's 3000 m steeplechase WRs and GCMs, whereas positive approaches were adopted in men's GCMs. Finally, whereas 5000 m and 10,000 m GCMs were finished with a fast endspurt, WRs had a U-shaped profile in men, with differences between the initial and last race stages (p ≤ 0.01, 1.20 ≤ d ≤ 3.66), and an even profile in women. Coaches should consider the different pacing demands existing among meet and global championship races to specifically implement training characteristics targeting either goal type.

Solution Process-Based Thickness Engineering of InZnO Semiconductors for Oxide Thin-Film Transistors with High Performance and Stability

To fabricate oxide thin-film transistors (TFTs) with high performance and excellent stability, preparing high-quality semiconductor films in the channel bulk region and minimizing the defect states in the gate dielectric/channel interfaces and back-channel regions is necessary. However, even if an oxide transistor is composed of the same semiconductor film, gate dielectric/channel interface, and back channel, its electrical performance and operational stability are significantly affected by the thickness of the oxide semiconductor. In this study, solution process-based nanometer-scale thickness engineering of InZnO semiconductors was easily performed via repeated solution coating and annealing. The thickness-controlled InZnO films were then applied as channel regions, which were fabricated with almost identical film quality, gate dielectric/channel interface, and back-channel conditions. However, excellent operational stability and electrical performance suitable for oxide TFT backplane was only achieved using an 8 nm thick InZnO film. In contrast, the ultrathin and thicker films exhibited electrical performances that were either very resistive (high positive VTh and low on-current) or excessively conductive (high negative VTh and high off-current). This investigation confirmed that the quality of semiconductor materials, solution process design, and structural parameters, including the dimensions of the channel layer, must be carefully designed to realize high-performance and high-stability oxide TFTs.

Electrical micro flow cytometry with LSTM and its application in leukocyte differential

This paper developed an electrical micro flow cytometry to realize leukocyte differentials leveraging a constrictional microchannel and a deep neural network. Firstly, purified granulocytes, lymphocytes or monocytes traveled through the constrictional microchannel with a cross-sectional area marginally larger than individual cells and produced large impedance variations by blocking focused electric field lines. By optimizing key elements (e.g., normalization, learning rate, batch size and neuron number) of the recurrent neural network (RNN), electrical results of purified leukocytes were analyzed to establish a leukocyte differential system with a classification accuracy of 95.2%. Then the leukocyte mixtures were forced to travel through the same constrictional microchannel, producing mixed impedance profiles which were classified into granulocytes, lymphocytes and monocytes based on the aforementioned differential system. As to the classification results, two leukocyte mixtures from the same donor were processed, producing comparable classification results, which were 57% versus 59% of granulocytes, 37% versus 34% of lymphocytes and 6% versus 7% of monocytes. These results validated the established classification system based on the constrictional microchannel and the recurrent neural network, providing a new perspective of differentiating white blood cells by electrical flow cytometry.

Bright and Stable Yellow Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diodes Through Core-Shell Nanostructure Engineering

Solution-processed and efficient yellow quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) are considered key optoelectronic devices for lighting, display, and signal indication. However, limited synthesis routes for yellow quantum dots (QDs), combined with inferior stress-relaxation of the core-shell interface, pose challenges to their commercialization. Herein, a nanostructure tailoring strategy for high-quality yellow CdZnSe/ZnSe/ZnS core/shell QDs using a "stepwise high-temperature nucleation-shell growth" method is introduced. The synthesized CdZnSe-based QDs effectively smoothed the release stress of the core-shell interface and revealed a near-unit photoluminescence quantum yield, with nonblinking behavior and matched energy level, which accelerated radiative recombination and charge injection balance for device operation. Consequently, the yellow CdZnSe-based QLEDs exhibited a peak external quantum efficiency of 23.7%, a maximum luminance of 686 050 cd m-2 , and a current efficiency of 103.2 cd A-1 , along with an operating half-lifetime of 428 523 h at 100 cd m-2 . To the best of the knowledge, the luminance and operational stability of the device are found to be the highest values reported for yellow LEDs. Moreover, devices with electroluminescence (EL) peaks at 570-605 nm exhibited excellent EQEs, surpassing 20%. The work is expected to significantly push the development of RGBY-based display panels and white LEDs.

Anionic Conjugated Polyelectrolyte as a Semiconducting Additive for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Perovskite defects are a major hurdle in the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). While various defect passivation materials have been explored, most are insulators that hinder charge transport. This study investigates the potential of two different π-conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs), MPS2-TEA and PCPDTBT2-TMA, as semiconducting additives in PSCs. The CPEs differ in electrical conductivity, offering a unique approach to bridge defect mitigation and charge carrier transport. Unlike previous uses of CPEs mainly as interlayers or charge transport layers, we explore their direct effect on defect passivation within a perovskite layer. Secondary ion microscopy reveals the even distribution of CPEs within the perovskite layer and their efficient defect passivation potential is studied through various spectroscopic analyses. Comparing MPS2-TEA and PCPDTBT2-TMA, we find MPS2-TEA to be superior in defect passivation. The highly conductive nature of PCPDTBT2-TMA due to self-doping diminishes its defect passivation ability. The negative sulfonate groups in the side chains of PCPDTBT2-TMA stabilize polarons, reducing defect passivation capability. Finally, the PSCs with MPS2-TEA achieve remarkable power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 22.7% for 0.135 cm2 and 20.0% for large-area (1 cm2) cells. Furthermore, the device with MPS2-TEA maintained over 87.3% of initial PCE after 960 h at continuous 1-sun illumination and 89% of PCE after 850 h at 85 °C in a nitrogen glovebox without encapsulation. This highlights CPEs as promising defect passivation additives, unlocking potential for improved efficiency and stability not only in PSCs but also in wider applications.

Accelerated Capacity and Cycling Performance via Facile Instantaneous Precipitation Induced Amorphization for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Conversion-alloying anodes have garnered escalating attention with high theoretical capacity, however, they are seriously hindered by large volume distortion and capacity fading. To counter, structural modification needs more exploration. Herein, advantageous structure and high-performance are realized in new amorphous PbSb2 O6 (PSO-a) nanosphere via facile instantaneous precipitation induced amorphization; conversion-alloying mechanism endows it with prominent lithium-storage capability; nanostructure can shorten ion-transfer distance and accommodate volume change outside the bulk of PSO-a; and loosely-stacked isotropic amorphous structure can enhance kinetics both at electrode/electrolyte interfaces and in the bulk. Volume change is synergistically stabilized from within to outside the bulk, leading to accelerated capacity and cycling. As expected, when employed in half-cells with 1 m LiPF6 in ethylene carbonate/diethyl carbonate/dimethyl carbonate/fluoroethylene carbonate (3:3:3:1 by mass) as electrolyte, glass microfiber filter as separator, and pure lithium foil as counter electrode, it realizes eminent performance with high specific capacity of 1512.6 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 and 755.1 mA h g-1 after 1000 cycles at 3 A g-1 . To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first time PbSb2 O6 is utilized as high-performance anode for lithium-ion batteries. Furthermore, this facile strategy provides a promising direction for high-performance amorphous anode material.

Atomistic Insights into Medium-Entropy Perovskites for Efficient and Robust CO2 Electrolysis

Solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) show great promise in converting CO2 to valuable products. However, their practicality for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is restricted by sluggish kinetics and limited durability. Herein, we propose a novel medium-entropy perovskite, Sr2(Fe1.0Ti0.25Cr0.25Mn0.25Mo0.25)O6-δ (SFTCMM), as a potential electrode material for symmetrical SOEC toward CO2RR. Experimental and theoretical results unveil that the configuration entropy of SFTCMM perovskites contributes to the strengthened metal 3d-O 2p hybridization and the reduced O 2p bond center. This variation of electronic structure benefits oxygen vacancy creation and diffusion as well as CO2 adsorption and activation and ultimately accelerates CO2RR and oxygen electrocatalysis kinetics. Notably, the SFTCMM-based symmetrical SOEC delivers an excellent current density of 1.50 A cm-2 at 800 °C and 1.5 V, surpassing the prototype Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.5O6-δ (SFM, 1.04 A cm-2) and most of the state-of-the-art electrodes for symmetrical SOECs. Moreover, the SFTCMM-based symmetrical SOEC demonstrates stable CO2RR operation for 160 h.

High-Performance, Light-Stimulation Healable, and Closed-Loop Recyclable Lignin-Based Covalent Adaptable Networks

In this work, high-performance, light-stimulation healable, and closed-loop recyclable covalent adaptable networks are successfully synthesized from natural lignin-based polyurethane (LPU) Zn2+ coordination structures (LPUxZy). Using an optimized LPU (LPU-20 with a tensile strength of 28.4 ± 3.5 MPa) as the matrix for Zn2+ coordination, LPUs with covalent adaptable coordination networks are obtained that have different amounts of Zn. When the feed amount of ZnCl2 is 9 wt%, the strength of LPU-20Z9 reaches 37.3 ± 3.1 MPa with a toughness of 175.4 ± 4.6 MJ m-3 , which is 1.7 times of that of LPU-20. In addition, Zn2+ has a crucial catalytic effect on "dissociation mechanism" in the exchange reaction of LPU. Moreover, the Zn2+ -based coordination bonds significantly enhance the photothermal conversion capability of lignin. The maximum surface temperature of LPU-20Z9 reaches 118 °C under the near-infrared illumination of 0.8 W m-2 . This allows the LPU-20Z9 to self-heal within 10 min. Due to the catalytic effect of Zn2+ , LPU-20Z9 can be degraded and recovered in ethanol completely. Through the investigation of the mechanisms for exchange reaction and the design of the closed-loop recycling method, this work is expected to provide insight into the development of novel LPUs with high-performance, light-stimulated heal ability, and closed-loop recyclability; which can be applied toward the expanded development of intelligent elastomers.

Biomimetic Mineralization: From Microscopic to Macroscopic Materials and Their Biomedical Applications

Biomineralization is an attractive pathway to produce mineral-based biomaterials with high performance and hierarchical structures. To date, the biomineralization process and mechanism have been extensively studied, especially for the formation of bone, teeth, and nacre. Inspired by those, abundant biomimetic mineralized materials have been fabricated for biomedical applications. Those bioinspired materials generally exhibit great mechanical properties and biological functions. Nevertheless, substantial gaps remain between biomimetic materials and natural materials, particularly with respect to mechanical properties and mutiscale structures. This Review summarizes the recent progress of micro- and macroscopic biomimetic mineralization from the perspective of materials synthesis and biomedical applications. To begin with, we discuss the progress of biomimetic mineralization at the microscopic level. The mechanical strength, stability, and functionality of the nano- and micromaterials are significantly improved by introducing biominerals, such as DNA nanostructures, nanovaccines, and living cells. Next, numerous biomimetic strategies based on biomineralization at the macroscopic scale are highlighted, including in situ mineralization and bottom-up assembly of mineralized building blocks. Finally, challenges and future perspectives regarding the development of biomimetic mineralization are also presented with the aim of offering insights for the rational design and fabrication of next-generation biomimetic mineralized materials.

Atomically Thin Amorphous Indium-Oxide Semiconductor Film Developed Using a Solution Process for High-Performance Oxide Transistors

High-performance oxide transistors have recently attracted significant attention for use in various electronic applications, such as displays, sensors, and back-end-of-line transistors. In this study, we demonstrate atomically thin indium-oxide (InOx) semiconductors using a solution process for high-performance thin-film transistors (TFTs). To achieve superior field-effect mobility and switching characteristics in TFTs, the bandgap and thickness of the InOx were tuned by controlling the InOx solution molarity. As a result, a high field-effect mobility and on/off-current ratio of 13.95 cm2 V-1 s-1 and 1.42 × 1010, respectively, were achieved using 3.12-nanometer-thick InOx. Our results showed that the charge transport of optimized InOx with a thickness of 3.12 nm is dominated by percolation conduction due to its low surface roughness and appropriate carrier concentration. Furthermore, the atomically thin InOx TFTs showed superior positive and negative gate bias stress stabilities, which are important in electronic applications. The proposed oxide TFTs could provide an effective means of the fabrication of scalable, high-throughput, and high-performance transistors for next-generation electronic applications.

Nanocrystal Engineering of Thin-Film Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia Electrolytes for Low-Temperature Solid-Oxide Fuel Cells

To overcome significantly sluggish oxygen-ion conduction in the electrolytes of low-temperature solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), numerous researchers have devoted considerable effort to fabricating the electrolytes as thin as possible. However, thickness is not the only factor that affects the electrolyte performance; roughness, grain size, and internal film stress also play a role. In this study, yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) was deposited via a reactive sputtering process to fabricate high-performance thin-film electrolytes. Various sputtering chamber pressures (5, 10, and 15 mTorr) were investigated to improve the electrolytes. As a result, high surface area, large grain size, and residual tensile stress were successfully obtained by increasing the sputtering pressure. To clarify the correlation between the microstructure and electrolyte performance, a YSZ thin-film electrolyte was applied to anodized aluminum oxide-supported SOFCs composed of conventional electrode materials which are Ni and Pt as the anode and the cathode, respectively. The thin-film SOFC with YSZ deposited at 15 mTorr exhibited the lowest ohmic resistance and, consequently, the highest maximum power density (493 mW/cm2) at 500 °C whose performance is more than five times higher than that of the cell with YSZ deposited at 5 mTorr (94.1 mW/cm2). Despite the basic electrode materials, exceptionally high performance at low operating temperature was achieved via controlling the single fabrication condition for the electrolyte.

Enhancing Mitigation of Volumetric DDoS Attacks: A Hybrid FPGA/Software Filtering Datapath

The increasing network speeds of today's Internet require high-performance, high-throughput network devices. However, the lack of affordable, flexible, and readily available devices poses a challenge for packet classification and filtering. This problem is exacerbated by the increase in volumetric Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks, which require efficient packet processing and filtering. To meet the demands of high-speed networks and configurable network processing devices, this paper investigates a hybrid hardware/software packet filter prototype that combines reconfigurable FPGA technology and high-speed software filtering on commodity hardware. It uses a novel approach that offloads filtering rules to the hardware and employs a Longest Prefix Matching (LPM) algorithm and allowlists/blocklists based on millions of IP prefixes. The hybrid filter demonstrates improvements over software-only filtering, achieving performance gains of nearly 30%, depending on the rulesets, offloading methods, and traffic types. The significance of this research lies in developing a cost-effective alternative to more-expensive or less-effective filters, providing high-speed DDoS packet filtering for IPv4 traffic, as it still dominates over IPv6. Deploying these filters on commodity hardware at the edge of the network can mitigate the impact of DDoS attacks on protected networks, enhancing the security of all devices on the network, including Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

Engineering Lung-Inspired Flow Field Geometries for Electrochemical Flow Cells with Stereolithography 3D Printing

Electrochemical flow reactors are increasingly relevant platforms in emerging sustainable energy conversion and storage technologies. As a prominent example, redox flow batteries, a well-suited technology for large energy storage if the costs can be significantly reduced, leverage electrochemical reactors as power converting units. Within the reactor, the flow field geometry determines the electrolyte pumping power required, mass transport rates, and overall cell performance. However, current designs are inspired by fuel cell technologies but have not been engineered for redox flow battery applications, where liquid-phase electrochemistry is sustained. Here, we leverage stereolithography 3D printing to manufacture lung-inspired flow field geometries and compare their performance to conventional flow field designs. A versatile two-step process based on stereolithography 3D printing followed by a coating procedure to form a conductive structure is developed to manufacture lung-inspired flow field geometries. We employ a suite of fluid dynamics, electrochemical diagnostics, and finite element simulations to correlate the flow field geometry with performance in symmetric flow cells. We find that the lung-inspired structural pattern homogenizes the reactant distribution throughout the porous electrode and improves the electrolyte accessibility to the electrode reaction area. In addition, the results reveal that these novel flow field geometries can outperform conventional interdigitated flow field designs, as these patterns exhibit a more favorable balance of electrical and pumping power, achieving superior current densities at lower pressure loss. Although at its nascent stage, additive manufacturing offers a versatile design space for manufacturing engineered flow field geometries for advanced flow reactors in emerging electrochemical energy storage technologies.

3D Printing of Bi2Te3-Based Thermoelectric Materials with High Performance and Shape Controllability

Thermoelectric (TE) energy conversion technology provides a promising way to improve the efficiency of fossil energy by generating electricity from low-grade waste heat. With regard to these applications, thermoelectric generators (TEGs) should be designed from system integration perspectives to simultaneously improve heat transfer efficiency and system simplification as well as the robust mechanical properties. However, typical TEGs fabricated by conventional methods barely accomplish such requirements. Herein, high-quality TEGs were assembled by combining the well-flowable spherical bismuth telluride (BT) powdered precursors and selective laser melting (SLM) technology. By optimizing the electronic and phonon transport properties through defect engineering driven by 3D printing, a high figure of merit was accomplished for 1.27 (p-type) and 1.13 (n-type) in BT. This achievement is primarily attributed to the nonequilibrium solidification mechanism, which leads to the formation of multiscale defects during the 3D printing process. The introduction of these multiscale defects enables the effective scattering of wide frequency phonons, leading to a substantial reduction in lattice thermal conductivity. Meanwhile, robust mechanical properties were obtained in the printed p-type/n-type BT TE materials parallel to the building direction (BD) with a compressive strength reaching 257/250 MPa by employing the fine grain structure and the high density of nanotwins introduced during the SLM process. A well shape-controllable and high-performance TEG was designed using 3D-printed BT half-rings, and an output power of 134 mW was achieved at a temperature gradient of 38.9 °C. Our study opens a new route for the great potential of TE materials based on standard commercial SLM 3D printing technology for low-grade waste heat emitted from structures with heterogeneous shapes.

Recycling of Waste Bamboo Biomass and Papermaking Waste Liquid to Synthesize Sodium Lignosulfonate/Chitosan Glue-Free Biocomposite

The development of the paper industry has led to the discharge of a large amount of papermaking waste liquid containing lignosulfonate. These lignin black liquids cause a lot of pollution in nature, which runs counter to the current environmental protection strategy under the global goal. Through the development and use of lignosulfonate in papermaking waste liquid to increase the utilization of harmful substances in waste liquid, we aim to promote waste liquid treatment and reduce environmental pollution. This paper proposes a new strategy to synthesize novel glue-free biocomposites with high-performance interfacial compatibility from papermaking by-product sodium lignosulfonate/chitosan (L/C) and waste bamboo. This L/C bamboo biocomposite material has good mechanical properties and durability, low formaldehyde emissions, a high recovery rate, meets the requirements of wood-based panels, and reduces environmental pollution. This method is low in cost, has the potential for large-scale production, and can effectively reduce the environmental pollution of the paper industry, promoting the recycling of biomass and helping the future manufacture of glue-free panels, which can be widely used in the preparation of bookcase, furniture, floor and so on.

Multiheaded Cationic Surfactants with Dedicated Functionalities: Design, Synthetic Strategies, Self-Assembly and Performance

Contemporary research concerning surfactant science and technology comprises a variety of requirements relating to the design of surfactant structures with widely varying architectures to achieve physicochemical properties and dedicated functionality. Such approaches are necessary to make them applicable to modern technologies, such as nanostructure engineering, surface structurization or fine chemicals, e.g., magnetic surfactants, biocidal agents, capping and stabilizing reagents or reactive agents at interfaces. Even slight modifications of a surfactant's molecular structure with respect to the conventional single-head-single-tail design allow for various custom-designed products. Among them, multicharge structures are the most intriguing. Their preparation requires specific synthetic routes that enable both main amphiphilic compound synthesis using appropriate step-by-step reaction strategies or coupling approaches as well as further derivatization toward specific features such as magnetic properties. Some of the most challenging aspects of multicharge cationic surfactants relate to their use at different interfaces for stable nanostructures formation, applying capping effects or complexation with polyelectrolytes. Multiheaded cationic surfactants exhibit strong antimicrobial and antiviral activity, allowing them to be implemented in various biomedical fields, especially biofilm prevention and eradication. Therefore, recent advances in synthetic strategies for multiheaded cationic surfactants, their self-aggregation and performance are scrutinized in this up-to-date review, emphasizing their applications in different fields such as building blocks in nanostructure engineering and their use as fine chemicals.

A High-Performance UVA Photodetector Based on Polycrystalline Perovskite MAPbCl3/TiO2 Nanorods Heterojunctions

The application of TiO2 nanorods in the field of ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors is hindered by a high dark current, which is attributed to crystal surface defects and intrinsic excitation by carrier thermal diffusion. Here, a photodetector based on polycrystalline perovskite MAPbCl3/TiO2 nanorods heterojunctions has been fabricated to overcome the shortcoming. The structure was composed of horizontal MAPbCl3 polycrystalline and vertically aligned TiO2 nanorods array. Many localized depletion regions at the MAPbCl3/TiO2 interface can reduce the dark current. The TiO2/MAPbCl3 detector shows high performance including a high ratio of light-dark current of about six orders of magnitude, which is much larger than that of the TiO2 detector. This study indicates the potential in the TiO2/MAPbCl3 heterojunction to fabricate high-performance UV detectors.

All-Round Enhancement in Zn-Ion Storage Enabled by Solvent-Guided Lewis Acid-Base Self-Assembly of Heterodiatomic Carbon Nanotubes

Designing zincophilic and stable carbon nanostructures is critical for Zn-ion storage with superior capacitive activity and durability. Here, we report solvent-guided Lewis acid-base self-assembly to customize heterodiatomic carbon nanotubes, triggered by the reaction between iron chloride and α,α'-dichloro-p-xylene. In this strategy, modulating the solvent-precursor interaction through the optimization of solvent formula stimulates differential thermodynamic solubilization, growth kinetics, and self-assembly behaviors of Lewis polymeric chains, thereby accurately tailoring carbon nanoarchitectures to evoke superior Zn-ion storage. Featured with open hollow interiors and porous tubular topologies, the solvent-optimized carbon nanotubes allow low ion-migration barriers to deeply access the built-in zincophilic sites by high-kinetics physical Zn²⁺/CF₃SO₃^- adsorption and robust chemical Zn²⁺ redox with pyridine/carbonyl motifs, which maximizes the spatial capacitive charge storage density. Thus, as-designed heterodiatomic carbon nanotube cathodes provide all-round improvement in Zn-ion storage, including a high energy density (140 W h kg^-1), a large current activity (100 A g^-1), and an exceptional long-term cyclability (100,000 cycles at 50 A g^-1). This study provides appealing insights into the solvent-mediated Lewis pair self-assembly design of nanostructured carbons toward advanced Zn-ion energy storage.

Asymmetric Supercapacitors Using Porous Carbons and Iron Oxide Electrodes Derived from a Single Fe Metal-Organic Framework (MIL-100 (Fe))

MOF-derived carbon (MDC) and metal oxide (MDMO) are superior materials for supercapacitor electrodes due to their high specific capacitances, which can be attributed to their high porosity, specific surface area (SSA), and pore volume. To improve the electrochemical performance, the environmentally friendly and industrially producible MIL-100 (Fe) was prepared using three different Fe sources through hydrothermal synthesis. MDC-A with micro- and mesopores and MDC-B with micropores were synthesized through carbonization and an HCl washing process, and MDMO (α-Fe₂O₃) was obtained by a simple sintering in air. The electrochemical properties in a three-electrode system using a 6 M KOH electrolyte were investigated. These novel MDC and MDMO were applied to an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) system to overcome the disadvantages of traditional supercapacitors, enhancing energy density, power density, and cyclic performance. High SSA materials (MDC-A nitrate and MDMO iron) were selected for negative and positive electrode material to fabricate ASC with KOH/PVP gel electrolyte. As-fabricated ASC resulted in high specific capacitance 127.4 Fg^-1 at 0.1 Ag^-1 and 48.0 Fg^-1 at 3 Ag^-1, respectively, and delivered superior energy density (25.5 Wh/kg) at a power density 60 W/kg. The charging/discharging cycling test was also conducted, indicating 90.1% stability after 5000 cycles. These results indicate that ASC with MDC and MDMO derived from MIL-100 (Fe) has promising potential in high-performance energy storage devices.

High-Performance Industrial-Grade p-Type (Bi,Sb)2 Te3 Thermoelectric Enabled by a Stepwise Optimization Strategy

As the sole dominator of the commercial thermoelectric (TE) market, Bi₂ Te₃ -based alloys play an irreplaceable role in Peltier cooling and low-grade waste heat recovery. Herein, to improve the relative low TE efficiency determined by the figure of merit ZT, an effective approach is reported for improving the TE performance of p-type (Bi,Sb)₂ Te₃ by incorporating Ag₈ GeTe₆ and Se. Specifically, the diffused Ag and Ge atoms into the matrix conduce to optimized carrier concentration and enlarge the density-of-states effective mass while the Sb-rich nanoprecipitates generate coherent interfaces with little loss of carrier mobility. The subsequent Se dopants introduce multiple phonon scattering sources and significantly suppress the lattice thermal conductivity while maintaining a decent power factor. Consequently, a high peak ZT of 1.53 at 350 K and a remarkable average ZT of 1.31 (300-500 K) are attained in the Bi_0.4 Sb_1.6 Te_0.95 Se_0.05  + 0.10 wt% Ag₈ GeTe₆ sample. Most noteworthily, the size and mass of the optimal sample are enlarged to Ø40 mm-200 g and the constructed 17-couple TE module exhibits an extraordinary conversion efficiency of 6.3% at ΔT = 245 K. This work demonstrates a facile method to develop high-performance and industrial-grade (Bi,Sb)₂ Te₃ -based alloys, which paves a strong way for further practical applications.

Time Decay in the Performance Benefits From Repeated-Sprint Training in Hypoxia in World-Class Short-Track Speed Skaters

PURPOSE

In short-track speed skating, athletes need to possess specific physiological capabilities to perform explosive starts and to finish races with faster lap times than their opponents. Repeated-sprint training in hypoxia (RSH) can enhance repeated-sprint ability and high-intensity performance. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between on- and off-ice performance indicators for training and testing purposes and how these are optimized with RSH in world-class short-track speed skaters including world and Olympic champions.

METHODS

RSH training was administered for 3 consecutive weeks, 3 times per week, at 3500 m of simulated altitude. Testing sessions (on-ice: 3-lap, 27-lap; off-ice: cycling incremental test, 7-s and 30-s Wingate) were performed immediately before and 2 and 4 weeks after RSH to determine the time course of decay.

RESULTS

On-ice top speed showed a small and possibly beneficial change of ∼0.9% for the women and large and almost certain ∼0.7% improvement for the men 2 weeks post-RSH. Cycling peak power showed a moderate and probable ∼5.4% improvement for the men 2 weeks after RSH. These adaptations reverted to baseline 4 weeks post-RSH. Wingate average power showed a small and possibly beneficial gain (∼3.4%) in performance 4 weeks post-RSH.

CONCLUSION

Although scientific controls could not be added due to the extremely high caliber of these athletes and low sample size of the national team, this study suggests that cycling RSH can be added immediately after on-ice training and can transfer into meaningful improvements on the ice in both male and female skaters.

Hierarchically Developed Ni(OH)2@MgCo2O4 Nanosheet Composites for Boosting Supercapacitor Performance

MgCo₂O₄ nanomaterial is thought to be a promising candidate for renewable energy storage and conversions. Nevertheless, the poor stability performances and small specific areas of transition-metal oxides remain a challenge for supercapacitor (SC) device applications. In this study, sheet-like Ni(OH)₂@MgCo₂O₄ composites were hierarchically developed on nickel foam (NF) using the facile hydrothermal process with calcination technology, under carbonization reactions. The combination of the carbon-amorphous layer and porous Ni(OH)₂ nanoparticles was anticipated to enhance the stability performances and energy kinetics. The Ni(OH)₂@MgCo₂O₄ nanosheet composite achieved a superior specific capacitance of 1287 F g^-1 at a current value of 1 A g^-1, which is higher than that of pure Ni(OH)₂ nanoparticles and MgCo₂O₄ nanoflake samples. At a current density of 5 A g^-1, the Ni(OH)₂@MgCo₂O₄ nanosheet composite delivered an outstanding cycling stability of 85.6%, which it retained over 3500 long cycles with an excellent rate of capacity of 74.5% at 20 A g^-1. These outcomes indicate that such a Ni(OH)₂@MgCo₂O₄ nanosheet composite is a good contender as a novel battery-type electrode material for high-performance SCs.

Colorless, Transparent, and High-Performance Polyurethane with Intrinsic Ultraviolet Resistance and Its Anti-UV Mechanism

Polyurethane (PU) is a widely used polymer material that will age under prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, shortening the service life. Several methods have been used to prepare the anti-UV PU, including adding nonreactive anti-UV additives, functional fillers, and biological antioxidant molecules. However, the nonreactive anti-UV additives may migrate during long-term use, the functional fillers may damage the mechanical properties and seriously reduce the light transmittance of the sample, and the biological antioxidant molecules will inevitably color the sample. To solve these problems, in this work, a benzotriazole UV absorber (Chiguard R-455) was introduced into the PU molecular chains by in situ polymerization to prepare the nonmigrating intrinsic anti-UV PU sample with high performance and colorless transparency. The anti-UV PU samples exhibit light transmittance of over 88% in the visible range and superior mechanical properties with tensile strength higher than 65 MPa and elongation at break higher than 900%. After 24 h UV irradiation (200 W, 365 nm), the tensile strength and elongation at break of pure PU sample are significantly reduced to only 8.9 and 15.8% of the original one, respectively. On the contrary, the addition of Chiguard R-455 will endow the PU sample with excellent anti-UV performance. After 24 h UV irradiation, the tensile strength (67.2 ± 1.6 MPa) and elongation at break (917.4 ± 30.0%) of PU-0.5% (the content of Chiguard R-455 is only 0.5 wt %) have changed little compared with the sample without irradiation (67.4 ± 3.5 MPa and 919.4 ± 26.5%). Additionally, the anti-UV mechanism of the PU sample is systematically studied. This work provides a feasible method for preparing colorless, transparent, high-performance, nonmigrating intrinsic UV-shielding PU samples, which can be used as a UV light-shielding material in various fields with visible and aesthetic requirements, such as protection fields and wearable products.

Design, Manufacturing and Functions of Pore-Structured Materials: From Biomimetics to Artificial

Porous structures with light weight and high mechanical performance exist widely in the tissues of animals and plants. Biomimetic materials with those porous structures have been well-developed, and their highly specific surfaces can be further used in functional integration. However, most porous structures in those tissues can hardly be entirely duplicated, and their complex structure-performance relationship may still be not fully understood. The key challenges in promoting the applications of biomimetic porous materials are to figure out the essential factors in hierarchical porous structures and to develop matched preparation methods to control those factors precisely. Hence, this article reviews the existing methods to prepare biomimetic porous structures. Then, the well-proved effects of micropores, mesopores, and macropores on their various properties are introduced, including mechanical, electric, magnetic, thermotics, acoustic, and chemical properties. The advantages and disadvantages of hierarchical porous structures and their preparation methods are deeply evaluated. Focusing on those disadvantages and aiming to improve the performance and functions, we summarize several modification strategies and discuss the possibility of replacing biomimetic porous structures with meta-structures.

A Holistic Vision of the Academic and Sports Development of Elite Spanish Track and Field Athletes

BACKGROUND

Combining sports and studies could be stressful, but beneficial for the athletes' career development. This study explores resources and barriers in the combination of the sports and academic life spheres during the lifespan of elite Spanish track-and-field athletes.

METHODS

Seven elite Spanish track-and-field athletes participated in a semistructured interview about their experiences to establish a dual career combining sports and studies/work. Interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) followed to analyze data.

RESULTS

Findings show that elite Spanish track-and-field athletes face educational and institutional barriers to developing a dual career. Time management, social support, and additional resources could play a key role in the success or failure to develop a dual career.

CONCLUSIONS

This study shows that, to overcome dual-career barriers, athletes are resourceful if social support is provided at both the micro (coaches, families, etc.) and macro (political and educational institutions) levels. It also shows that pursuing an academic career can help in alleviating inherent tensions to athletic life and in finding personal balance.

High-Efficiency and Mechanically Robust All-Polymer Organic Photovoltaic Cells Enabled by Optimized Fibril Network Morphology

All-polymer organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells possessing high photovoltaic performance and mechanical robustness are promising candidates for flexible wearable devices. However, developing photoactive materials with good mechanical properties and photovoltaic performance so far remains challenging. In this work, a polymer donor PBDB-TF with a high weight-average molecular weight (M_w ) is introduced to enable highly efficient all-polymer OPV cells featuring excellent mechanical reliability. By incorporating the high-M_w PBDB-TF as a third component into the PBQx-TF:PY-IT blend, the bulk heterojunction morphology is finely tuned with a more compact π-π stacking distance, affording efficient pathways for charge transport as well as mechanical stress dissipation. Hence, all-polymer OPV cells based on the ternary blend film demonstrate a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.2% with an outstanding fill factor of 0.796. The flexible OPV cell delivers a decent PCE of 16.5% with high mechanical stability. These results present a promising strategy to address the mechanical properties and boost the photovoltaic performance of all-polymer OPV cells.

Three-Dimensional Holey Graphene Modified Na4 Fe3 (PO4 )2 (P2 O7 )/C as a High-Performance Cathode for Rechargeable Sodium-Ion Batteries

Polyanion-type Na₄ Fe₃ (PO₄ )₂ (P₂ O₇ ) (NFPP) is a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries due to its low cost and high safety. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) holey graphene (HG) modified NFPP/C material (NFPPCHG) has been successfully prepared by a simple and scalable ball milling strategy with sodium phytate and ferrous oxalate as precursors. The introduction of HG can obviously improve the specific surface area, electronic conductivity, and ions transport performance of NFPPCHG and largely enhance its electrochemical properties. The prepared NFPPCHG delivers a high reversible capacity of 118 mAh g^-1 at 0.2 C and keeps a considerable capacity of 53 mAh g^-1 even at an ultrahigh rate of 100 C. NFPPCHG also shows excellent performance at 55 °C and -20 °C. Moreover, in situ distribution of relaxation time analysis further demonstrates NFPPCHG has superior electrochemical kinetics. In addition, the HC//NFPPCHG full cell displays good performance, suggesting great potential of the prepared material for practical applications.

Dual-Dynamic Chemistries-Based Fast-Reprocessing and High-Performance Covalent Adaptable Networks

Covalent adaptable networks (CANs) possess multiple functions including reprocessing (or recyclability), self-healing, welding, shape shifting, 3D printing, etc., due to the network rearrangement from dynamic bonds, and favorable performance from their cross-linked feature, and they are supposed to be as sustainable alternatives to thermosets. However, the thermal and mechanical properties, and stability of CANs are often sacrificed for rapid network rearrangement. In this paper, fast-reprocessing CANs with high performance are facilely constructed by in situ polymerization and dynamic cross-linking of styrene (St), maleic anhydride (MA), and acetal diol (BHAD). The rigid and hydrophobic polymer backbone endow the materials with high glass transition temperatures, mechanical performance, and water resistance. Besides, carboxylic group-catalyzed dual dynamic ester and acetal-based networks exhibit faster stress relaxation and realize extrusion reprocessing. This work provides an ingenious and simple strategy of construction of CANs combining rapid network rearrangement and excellent comprehensive performance, which is beneficial for the application of CANs.

Design and Analysis of a Hybrid Displacement Amplifier Supporting a High-Performance Piezo Jet Dispenser

In this study, a compliant amplifier powered by a piezoelectric stack is designed to meet high-performance dispensing operation requirements. By studying the issue of low frequency bandwidth on the traditional bridge-type amplifier mechanism, we propose a displacement amplifier mechanism, hybrid bridge-lever-bridge (HBLB), that enhances its dynamic performance by combining the traditional bridge-type and lever mechanism. A guiding beam is added to further improve its output stiffness with a guaranteed large amplification ratio. An analytical model has been developed to describe the full elastic deformation behavior of the HBLB mechanism that considers the lateral displacement loss of the input end, followed by a verification through a finite element analysis (FEA). Results revealed that the working principle of the HBLB optimizes the structural parameters using the finite element method. Finally, a prototype of the displacement amplifier was fabricated for performance tests. Static and dynamic test results revealed that the proposed mechanism can reach a travel range of 223.2 μm, and the frequency bandwidth is 1.184 kHz, which meets the requirements of a high-performance piezo jet dispenser.

Modified Cellulose Proton-Exchange Membranes for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells

A direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) is an excellent energy device in which direct conversion of methanol to energy occurs, resulting in a high energy conversion rate. For DMFCs, fluoropolymer copolymers are considered excellent proton-exchange membranes (PEMs). However, the high cost and high methanol permeability of commercial membranes are major obstacles to overcome in achieving higher performance in DMFCs. Novel developments have focused on various reliable materials to decrease costs and enhance DMFC performance. From this perspective, cellulose-based materials have been effectively considered as polymers and additives with multiple concepts to develop PEMs for DMFCs. In this review, we have extensively discussed the advances and utilization of cost-effective cellulose materials (microcrystalline cellulose, nanocrystalline cellulose, cellulose whiskers, cellulose nanofibers, and cellulose acetate) as PEMs for DMFCs. By adding cellulose or cellulose derivatives alone or into the PEM matrix, the performance of DMFCs is attained progressively. To understand the impact of different structures and compositions of cellulose-containing PEMs, they have been classified as functionalized cellulose, grafted cellulose, acid-doped cellulose, cellulose blended with different polymers, and composites with inorganic additives.

Building a transdisciplinary expert consensus on the cognitive drivers of performance under pressure: An international multi-panel Delphi study

Introduction

The ability to perform optimally under pressure is critical across many occupations, including the military, first responders, and competitive sport. Despite recognition that such performance depends on a range of cognitive factors, how common these factors are across performance domains remains unclear. The current study sought to integrate existing knowledge in the performance field in the form of a transdisciplinary expert consensus on the cognitive mechanisms that underlie performance under pressure.

Methods

International experts were recruited from four performance domains [(i) Defense; (ii) Competitive Sport; (iii) Civilian High-stakes; and (iv) Performance Neuroscience]. Experts rated constructs from the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) framework (and several expert-suggested constructs) across successive rounds, until all constructs reached consensus for inclusion or were eliminated. Finally, included constructs were ranked for their relative importance.

Results

Sixty-eight experts completed the first Delphi round, with 94% of experts retained by the end of the Delphi process. The following 10 constructs reached consensus across all four panels (in order of overall ranking): (1) Attention; (2) Cognitive Control-Performance Monitoring; (3) Arousal and Regulatory Systems-Arousal; (4) Cognitive Control-Goal Selection, Updating, Representation, and Maintenance; (5) Cognitive Control-Response Selection and Inhibition/Suppression; (6) Working memory-Flexible Updating; (7) Working memory-Active Maintenance; (8) Perception and Understanding of Self-Self-knowledge; (9) Working memory-Interference Control, and (10) Expert-suggested-Shifting.

Discussion

Our results identify a set of transdisciplinary neuroscience-informed constructs, validated through expert consensus. This expert consensus is critical to standardizing cognitive assessment and informing mechanism-targeted interventions in the broader field of human performance optimization.

Research of Liquid-Crystal Materials for a High-Performance FFS-TFT Display

A novel liquid-crystal compound of more than 99.95% purity with high performance (such as a high clearing point, large dielectric anisotropy, high optical anisotropy, low viscosity, and large elastic constants) was designed and synthesized according to the fringe-field switching thin-film-transistor-liquid-crystal display requirements (FFS-TFT). Then, a mixed liquid-crystal material suitable for an FFS-TFT display was developed by mixing this compound with other reported compounds, developing a product whose quality was that of the highest level of similar foreign products and which fully met the customer's use requirements (BOE), and thus able to completely replace similar imported materials.

Diethanolamine Modified Perovskite-Substrate Interface for Realizing Efficient ESL-Free PSCs

Simplifying device layout, particularly avoiding the complex fabrication steps and multiple high-temperature treatment requirements for electron-selective layers (ESLs) have made ESL-free perovskite solar cells (PSCs) attractive. However, the poor perovskite/substrate interface and inadequate quality of solution-processed perovskite thin films induce inefficient interfacial-charge extraction, limiting the power conversion efficiency (PCEs) of ESL-free PSCs. A highly compact and homogenous perovskite thin film with large grains was formed here by inserting an interfacial monolayer of diethanolamine (DEA) molecules between the perovskite and ITO substrate. In addition, the DEA created a favorable dipole layer at the interface of perovskite and ITO substrate by molecular adsorption, which suppressed charge recombination. Comparatively, PSCs based on DEA-treated ITO substrates delivered PCEs of up to 20.77%, one of the highest among ESL-free PSCs. Additionally, this technique successfully elongates the lifespan of ESL-free PSCs as 80% of the initial PCE was maintained after 550 h under AM 1.5 G irradiation at ambient temperature.

Heat-Resistant, Robust, and Hydrophilic Separators Based on Regenerated Cellulose for Advanced Supercapacitors

Separators in supercapacitors (SCs) typically suffer from defects of low mechanical property, limited ion transport, and electrolyte wettability, and poor thermal stability, impeding the development of SCs. Herein, high-performance regenerated cellulose (RC) based separators are designed that are fabricated by effective hydrolytic etching of inorganic CaCO₃ nanoparticles from a filled RC membrane. The as-prepared RC separator displays excellent comprehensive performances such as higher tensile strength (75.83 MPa) and thermal stability (200 °C), which is superior to commercial polypropylene-based separator (Celgard 2500) and sufficient to maintain their structural integrity even at temperatures in excess of 200 °C. Benefiting from its hydrophilicity, high porosity, and outstanding electrolyte uptake rate (208.5%), the RC separator exhibits rapid transport and permeability of ions, which is 2.5× higher than that of the commercial nonwoven polypropylene separator (NKK -MPF30AC-100) validated by electrochemical tests in the 1.0 m Na₂ SO₄ electrolyte. Results show that porous RC separator with unique advantages of superior electrolyte wettability, mechanical robustness, and high thermal stability, is a promising separator for SCs with high-performance and safety.

A Flexible 7-in-1 Microsensor Embedded in a Hydrogen/Vanadium Redox Battery for Real-Time Microscopic Measurements

The latest document indicates that the hydrogen/vanadium redox flow battery has better energy density and efficiency than the vanadium redox flow battery, as well as being low-cost and light-weight. In addition, the hydrogen, electrical conductivity, voltage, current, temperature, electrolyte flow, and runner pressure inside the hydrogen/vanadium redox flow battery can influence its performance and life. Therefore, this plan will try to step into the hydrogen/vanadium redox flow battery stack and improve the vanadium redox flow battery of this R&D team, whereof the electrolyte is likely to leak during assembling, and the strong acid corrosion environment is likely to age or fail the vanadium redox flow battery and microsensors. Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) are used, which are integrated with the flexible 7-in-1 microsensor, which is embedded in the hydrogen/vanadium redox flow battery for internal real-time microscopic sensing and diagnosis.

Effects of psychological interventions on high sports performance: A systematic review

Introduction

Intervention programs in sports psychology aid to modify the thoughts and behaviors of athletes in order to improve their performance in sports settings. For high-performance athletes, these interventions are very relevant, given that they constantly face pressure towards obtaining sporting achievements.

Methods

This systematic review aims to analyze the scientific articles between 2010 and 2020 that evaluated the effect of psychological interventions on high-performance athletes. In the search procedure, nine studies were selected, the most studied variables were psychological skills, psychological flexibility, and stress.

Results

The 44% of the interventions were designed by the research authors themselves, while the remaining 56% were replicated programs, which already had scientific evidence.

Discussion

Psychological interventions have a positive impact on sports performance. This review allows sports institutions and professionals to have more knowledge and resources at their disposal to implement these types of programs in their sports planning.
