Lattice-Strain Engineering for Heterogenous Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Constructing heterogeneous interface between Co3O4 and RuO2 with enhanced electronic regulation for efficient oxygen evolution reaction at large current density

Exploring effective strategies for developing new high-efficiency catalysts for water splitting is essential for advancing hydrogen energy technology. Herein, Co3O4/RuO2 heterojunction interface is construct through ion exchange reaction and pyrolysis. The as-synthesized Co3O4/RuO2-4 exhibits outstanding oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity at the current density of 100 mA cm-2 with a low overpotential of 276 mV, and remarkable stability (maintaining activity for 60 h at 100 mA cm-2). Experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that the electrons around the heterogeneous interface transferred from RuO2 to Co3O4, resulting in electron redistribution and optimization of energy barriers for OER intermediates. This unique composite catalyst structure offers a new potential for designing efficient oxygen electrocatalysts at large current density.

Tailoring competitive adsorption sites of hydroxide ion to enhance urea oxidation-assisted hydrogen production

Alloys with bimetallic electron modulation effect are promising catalysts for the electrooxidation of urea. However, the side reaction oxygen evolution reaction (OER) originating from the competitive adsorption of OH- and urea severely limited the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) activity on the alloy catalysts. This work successfully constructs the defect-rich NiCo alloy with lattice strain (PMo-NiCo/NF) by rapid pyrolysis and co-doping. By taking advantage of the compressive strain, the d-band center of NiCo is shifted downward, inhibiting OH- from adsorbing on the NiCo site and avoiding the detrimental OER. Meanwhile, the oxygenophilic P/Mo tailored specific adsorption sites to adsorb OH- preferentially, which further released the NiCo sites to ensure the enriched adsorption of urea, thus improving the UOR efficiency. As a result, PMo-NiCo/NF only requires 1.27 V and -57 mV to drive a current density of ±10 mA cm-2 for UOR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively. With the guidance of this work, reactant competing adsorption sites could be tailored for effective electrocatalytic performance.

Ion-Exchange-Induced Phase Transition Enables an Intrinsically Air Stable Hydrogarnet Electrolyte for Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Inferior air stability is a primary barrier for large-scale applications of garnet electrolytes in energy storage systems. Herein, a deeply hydrated hydrogarnet electrolyte generated by a simple ion-exchange-induced phase transition from conventional garnet, realizing a record-long air stability of more than two years when exposed to ambient air is proposed. Benefited from the elimination of air-sensitive lithium ions at 96 h/48e sites and unobstructed lithium conduction path along tetragonal sites (12a) and vacancies (12b), the hydrogarnet electrolyte exhibits intrinsic air stability and comparable ion conductivity to that of traditional garnet. Moreover, the unique properties of hydrogarnet pave the way for a brand-new aqueous route to prepare lithium metal stable composite electrolyte on a large-scale, with high ionic conductivity (8.04 × 10-4 S cm-1), wide electrochemical windows (4.95 V), and a high lithium transference number (0.43). When applied in solid-state lithium batteries (SSLBs), the batteries present impressive capacity and cycle life (164 mAh g-1 with capacity retention of 89.6% after 180 cycles at 1.0C under 50 °C). This work not only designs a new sort of hydrogarnet electrolyte, which is stable to both air and lithium metal but also provides an eco-friendly and large-scale fabrication route for SSLBs.

In-situ construction of cation vacancies in amphoteric-metallic element-doped NiFe-LDH as ultrastable and efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts at 1000 mA cm-2

Developing efficient and stable electrocatalysts at affordable costs is very important for large-scale production of green hydrogen. In this study, unique amphoteric metallic element-doped NiFe-LDH nanosheet arrays (NiFeCd-LDH, NiFeZn-LDH and NiFeAl-LDH) using as high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) were reported, by tuning electronic structure and vacancy engineering. It was found that NiFeCd-LDH possesses the lowest overpotentials of 85 mV and 240 mV (at 10 mA cm-2) for HER and OER, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the synergistic effect of Cd vacancies and Cd doping on improving alkaline HER performance, which promote the achievement of excellent catalytic activity and ultrastable hydrogen production at a large current density of 1000 mA cm-2 within 250 h. Besides, the overall water splitting performance of the as-prepared NiFeCd-LDH requires only 1.580 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline seawater media, underscoring the importance of modifying the electronic properties of LDH for efficient overall water splitting in both alkaline water/seawater environments.

General Model for Predicting Response of Gas-Sensitive Materials to Target Gas Based on Machine Learning

Gas sensors play a crucial role in various industries and applications. In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for gas sensors in society. However, the current method for screening gas-sensitive materials is time-, energy-, and cost-consuming. Consequently, an imperative exists to enhance the screening efficiency. In this study, we proposed a collaborative screening strategy through integration of density functional theory and machine learning. Taking zinc oxide (ZnO) as an example, the responsiveness of ZnO to the target gas was determined quickly on the basis of the changes in the electronic state and structure before and after gas adsorption. In this work, the adsorption energy and electronic and structural characteristics of ZnO after adsorbing 24 kinds of gases were calculated. These computed features served as the basis for training a machine learning model. Subsequently, various machine learning and evaluation algorithms were utilized to train the fast screening model. The importance of feature values was evaluated by the AdaBoost, Random Forest, and Extra Trees models. Specifically, charge transfer was assigned importance values of 0.160, 0.127, and 0.122, respectively, ranking as the highest among the 11 features. Following closely was the d-band center, which was presumed to exert influence on electrical conductivity and, consequently, adsorption properties. With 5-fold cross-validation using the Extra Tree accuracy, the 24-sample data set achieved an accuracy of 88%. The 72-sample data set achieved an accuracy of 78% using multilayer perceptron after 5-fold cross-validation, with both data sets exhibiting low standard deviations. This verified the accuracy and reliability of the strategy, showcasing its potential for rapidly screening a material's responsiveness to the target gas.

Controllable Regulation of the Oxygen Redox Process in Lithium-Oxygen Batteries by High-Configuration-Entropy Spinel with an Asymmetric Octahedral Structure

Designing bifunctional electrocatalysts to boost oxygen redox reactions is critical for high-performance lithium-oxygen batteries (LOBs). In this work, high-entropy spinel (Co0.2Mn0.2Ni0.2Fe0.2Cr0.2)3O4 (HEOS) is fabricated by modulating the internal configuration entropy of spinel and studied as the oxygen electrode catalyst in LOBs. Under the high-entropy atomic environment, the Co-O octahedron in spinel undergoes asymmetric deformation, and the reconfiguration of the electron structure around the Co sites leads to the upward shift of the d-orbital centers of the Co sites toward the Fermi level, which is conducive to the strong adsorption of redox intermediate LiO2 on the surface of the HEOS, ultimately forming a layer of a highly dispersed Li2O2 thin film. Thin-film Li2O2 is beneficial for ion diffusion and electron transfer at the electrode-electrolyte interface, which makes the product easy to decompose during the charge process, ultimately accelerating the kinetics of oxygen redox reactions in LOBs. Based on the above advantages, HEOS-based LOBs deliver high discharge/charge capacity (12.61/11.72 mAh cm-2) and excellent cyclability (424 cycles). This work broadens the way for the design of cathode catalysts to improve oxygen redox kinetics in LOBs.

Work Function-Guided Electrocatalyst Design

The development of high-performance electrocatalysts for energy conversion reactions is crucial for advancing global energy sustainability. The design of catalysts based on their electronic properties (e.g., work function) has gained significant attention recently. Although numerous reviews on electrocatalysis have been provided, no such reports on work function-guided electrocatalyst design are available. Herein, a comprehensive summary of the latest advancements in work function-guided electrocatalyst design for diverse electrochemical energy applications is provided. This includes the development of work function-based catalytic activity descriptors, and the design of both monolithic and heterostructural catalysts. The measurement of work function is first discussed and the applications of work function-based catalytic activity descriptors for various reactions are fully analyzed. Subsequently, the work function-regulated material-electrolyte interfacial electron transfer (IET) is employed for monolithic catalyst design, and methods for regulating the work function and optimizing the catalytic performance of catalysts are discussed. In addition, key strategies for tuning the work function-governed material-material IET in heterostructural catalyst design are examined. Finally, perspectives on work function determination, work function-based activity descriptors, and catalyst design are put forward to guide future research. This work paves the way to the work function-guided rational design of efficient electrocatalysts for sustainable energy applications.

Electron Accumulation Induced by Electron Injection-Incomplete Discharge on NiFe LDH for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Optimizing the local electronic structure of electrocatalysts can effectively lower the energy barrier of electrochemical reactions, thus enhancing the electrocatalytic activity. However, the intrinsic contribution of the electronic effect is still experimentally unclear. In this work, the electron injection-incomplete discharge approach to achieve the electron accumulation (EA) degree on the nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) is proposed, to reveal the intrinsic contribution of EA toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Such NiFe LDH with EA effect results in only 262 mV overpotential to reach 50 mA cm-2, which is 51 mV-lower compared with pristine NiFe LDH (313 mV), and reduced Tafel slope of 54.8 mV dec-1 than NiFe LDH (107.5 mV dec-1). Spectroscopy characterizations combined with theoretical calculations confirm that the EA near concomitant Vo can induce a narrower energy gap and lower thermodynamic barrier to enhance OER performance. This study clarifies the mechanism of the EA effect on OER activity, providing a direct electronic structure modulation guideline for effective electrocatalyst design.

Amorphous/Crystalline Phases Mixed Nanosheets Array Rich in Oxygen Vacancies Boost Oxygen Evolution Reaction of Spinel Oxides in Alkaline Media

As promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, spinel-type oxides face the bottleneck of weak adsorption for oxygen-containing intermediates, so it is challenging to make a further breakthrough in remarkably lowering the OER overpotential. In this study, a novel strategy is proposed to substantially enhance the OER activity of spinel oxides based on amorphous/crystalline phases mixed spinel FeNi2O4 nanosheets array, enriched with oxygen vacancies, in situ grown on a nickel foam (NF). This unique architecture is achieved through a one-step millisecond laser direct writing method. The presence of amorphous phases with abundant oxygen vacancies significantly enhances the adsorption of oxygen-containing intermediates and changes the rate-determining step from OH*→O* to O*→OOH*, which greatly reduces the thermodynamic energy barrier. Moreover, the crystalline phase interweaving with amorphous domains serves as a conductive shortcut to facilitate rapid electron transfer from active sites in the amorphous domain to NF, guaranteeing fast OER kinetics. Such an anodic electrode exhibits a nearly ten fold enhancement in OER intrinsic activity compared to the pristine counterpart. Remarkably, it demonstrates record-low overpotentials of 246 and 315 mV at 50 and 500 mA cm-2 in 1 m KOH with superior long-term stability, outperforming other NiFe-based spinel oxides catalysts.

Atomic Strain Wave-Featured LaRuIr Nanocrystals: Achieving Simultaneous Enhancement of Catalytic Activity and Stability toward Acidic Water Splitting

Rare earth microalloying nanocrystals have gotten widespread attention due to their unprecedented performances with customization-defected nanostructures, divided energy bands, and ensembled surface chemistry, regarded as a class of ideal electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, a lanthanide microalloying strategy is proposed to fabricate strain wave-featured LaRuIr nanocrystals with oxide skin through a rapid crystal nucleation, using thermally assisted sodium borohydride reduction in aqueous solution at 60 °C. The atomic strain waves with alternating compressive and tensile strains, resulting from La-stabilized edge dislocations in form of Cottrell atmospheres. In 0.5 m H2SO4, the LaRuIr displays an overpotential of 184 mV at 10 mA cm-2, running at a steadily cell voltage for 60 h at 50 mA cm-2, eightfold enhancement of IrO2||Pt/C assemble in PEMWE. The coupled compressive and tensile profiles boost the OER kinetics via faster AEM and LOM pathways. Moreover, the tensile facilitates surface structure stabilization through dynamic refilling of lattice oxygen vacancies by the adsorbed oxyanions on La, Ru, and Ir sites, eventually achieving a long-term stability. This work contributes to developing advanced catalysts with unique strain to realize simultaneous improvement of activity and durability by breaking the so-called seesaw relationship between them during OER for water splitting.

Size-induced d band center upshift of copper for efficient nitrate reduction to ammonia

Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction (NO3RR) technique has emerged as a hotspot in NH3 production, for its practicability, and a series of advanced electrocatalysts with high activity and robust stability needed to be constructed in today's era. In this work, size-tunable Cu nanoparticles on porous nitrogen-doped hexagonal carbon nanorods (Cu@NHC) were reasonably designed and served for catalyzing NO3RR in neutral media. Especially, Cu30%@NHC demonstrated a remarkable electroactivity for NH3 production as it showed a suitable grain size with massive catalytic centers and favorable d band structure with faster *NO3--to-*NO2- catalytic dynamics. As expected, Cu30%@NHC (3628.28 µg h-1 mgcat.-1) had a much higher NH3 yield than those for Cu20%@NHC (1268.42 µg h-1 mgcat.-1) and Cu40%@NHC (725.03 µg h-1 mgcat.-1). And those collected NH3 products indeed derived from NO3RR process revealed by 15N isotope-labeling and systemic control tests. Moreover, Cu30%@NHC was also durable for NO3RR bulk electrolysis with minor loss in activity. This work offered an effective modifying tactics to boost NO3RR catalysis and could guide the design of other advanced electrocatalysts via size-induced surface engineering.

From Charge to Spin: An In-Depth Exploration of Electron Transfer in Energy Electrocatalysis

Catalytic materials play crucial roles in various energy-related processes, ranging from large-scale chemical production to advancements in renewable energy technologies. Despite a century of dedicated research, major enduring challenges associated with enhancing catalyst efficiency and durability, particularly in green energy-related electrochemical reactions, remain. Focusing only on either the crystal structure or electronic structure of a catalyst is deemed insufficient to break the linear scaling relationship (LSR), which is the golden rule for the design of advanced catalysts. The discourse in this review intricately outlines the essence of heterogeneous catalysis reactions by highlighting the vital roles played by electron properties. The physical and electrochemical properties of electron charge and spin that govern catalysis efficiencies are analyzed. Emphasis is placed on the pronounced influence of external fields in perturbing the LSR, underscoring the vital role that electron spin plays in advancing high-performance catalyst design. The review culminates by proffering insights into the potential applications of spin catalysis, concluding with a discussion of extant challenges and inherent limitations.

Investigating the impact of electron beam irradiation on electrical, magnetic, and optical properties of XLPE/Co3O4 nanocomposites

Nowadays, many researchers aim to fill polymer materials with inorganic nanoparticles to enhance the polymer properties and gain the merits of the polymeric host matrix. Sol-gel synthesized Co3O4 nanoparticles are subjected to different doses of electron beam (10, 20, and 30 kGy) to study their physiochemical properties and choose the optimized nanoparticles to fill our polymeric matrix. Crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) has been filled with 5 wt % of un-irradiated cobalt oxide nanoparticles using the melt extruder method. The structural, optical, magnetic, and electrical properties of the XLPE/Co3O4 nanocomposite before and after exposure to different doses of electron beam radiation have been characterized. The crystallite size of face-centered cubic spinel Co3O4 nanoparticles has been confirmed by XRD whereas and their unique truncated octahedral shape obviously appears in SEM micrographs. The crystallite size of Co3O4 nanoparticles has decreased from 47.5 to 31.5 nm upon irradiation at a dose of 30 kGy, and significantly decreased to 18.5 nm upon filling inside XLPE matrix. Related to the oxidation effect of the electron beam, the Co2+/Co3+ ratio on the surface of Co3O4 nanoparticles has decreased upon irradiation as verified by XPS technique. This consequently caused the partial elimination of oxygen vacancies, mainly responsible for the weak ferromagnetic behavior of Co3O4 in its nanoscale. This appears as decreased saturation magnetization as depicted by VSM. The XLPE/Co3O4 nanocomposite has also shown weak ferromagnetic behavior but the coercive field (Hc) has increased from 112.57 to 175.72 G upon filling inside XLPE matrix and decreased to 135.18 G after irradiating the nanocomposite at a dose of 30 kGy. The ionic conductivity of XLPE has increased from 0.133 × 10-7 to 2.198 × 10-3 S/cm upon filling with Co3O4 nanoparticles while a slight increase is observed upon irradiation.

Interfacial Interaction in NiFe LDH/NiS2/VS2 for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Water Splitting

A bifunctional electrocatalyst with high efficiency and low costs for overall water splitting is critical to achieving a green hydrogen economy and coping with the energy crisis. However, developing robust electrocatalysts still faces huge challenges, owing to unsatisfactory electron transfer and inherent activity. Herein, NiFe LDH/NiS2/VS2 heterojunctions have been designed as freestanding bifunctional electrocatalysts to split water, exhibiting enhanced electron transfer and abundant catalytic sites. The optimum NiFe LDH/NiS2/VS2 electrocatalyst exhibits a small overpotential of 380 mV at 10 mA cm-2 for overall water splitting and superior electrocatalytic performance in both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER). Specifically, the electrocatalyst requires overpotentials of 76 and 286 mV at 10 mA cm-2 for HER and OER, respectively, in alkaline electrolytes, which originate from the synergistic interaction among the facilitated electron transfer and increasingly exposed active sites due to the modulation of interfaces and construction of heterojunctions.

Optimization strategies of high-entropy alloys for electrocatalytic applications

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are expected to become one of the most promising functional materials in the field of electrocatalysis due to their site-occupancy disorder and lattice order. The chemical complexity and component tunability make it possible for them to obtain a nearly continuous distribution of adsorption energy curve, which means that the optimal adsorption strength and maximum activity can be obtained by a multi-alloying strategy. In the last decade, a great deal of research has been performed on the synthesis, element selection and catalytic applications of HEAs. In this review, we focus on the analysis and summary of the advantages, design ideas and optimization strategies of HEAs in electrocatalysis. Combined with experiments and theories, the advantages of high activity and high stability of HEAs are explored in depth. According to the classification of catalytic reactions, how to design high-performance HEA catalysts is proposed. More importantly, efficient strategies for optimizing HEA catalysts are provided, including element regulation, defect regulation and strain engineering. Finally, we point out the challenges that HEAs will face in the future, and put forward some personal proposals. This work provides a deep understanding and important reference for electrocatalytic applications of HEAs.

An Ultrathin Inorganic Molecular Crystal Interfacial Layer for Stable Zn Anode

Zn metal anode suffers from dendrite growth and side reactions during cycling, significantly deteriorating the lifespan of aqueous Zn metal batteries. Herein, we introduced an ultrathin and ultra-flat Sb2 O3 molecular crystal layer to stabilize Zn anode. The in situ optical and atomic force microscopes observations show that such a 10 nm Sb2 O3 thin layer could ensure uniform under-layer Zn deposition with suppressed tip growth effect, while the traditional WO3 layer undergoes an uncontrolled up-layer Zn deposition. The superior regulation capability is attributed to the good electronic-blocking ability and low Zn affinity of the molecular crystal layer, free of dangling bonds. Electrochemical tests exhibit Sb2 O3 layer can significantly improve the cycle life of Zn anode from 72 h to 2800 h, in contrast to the 900 h of much thicker WO3 even in 100 nm. This research opens up the application of inorganic molecular crystals as the interfacial layer of Zn anode.

Strain Engineering of the NiTe/Ni2P Heterostructure to Boost the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Discovering highly efficient and stable non-precious metal catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for energy conversion in water splitting. However, preparing high-performance OER catalysts and elucidating the structural changes in the process are still challenging. Herein, we synthesize the NiTe/Ni2P heterostructure and demonstrate the strain engineering of NiTe/Ni2P via the lattice incompatibility between the phosphide and the telluride. The strain engineering of the NiTe/Ni2P heterostructure not only significantly boosts the OER activity but also effectively stabilizes the intrinsic structure of the catalyst after the OER process by using the in situ-produced metal salt as a protection layer. After the OER stability test, no oxyhydroxide phase is observed, and in situ Raman spectroscopy reveals that a voltage-dependent phase transition appears during the OER, which is different from most previously reported Ni-based catalysts, for which the generation of irreversible NiOOH occurs after the OER. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that the tensile strain of Ni2P will inhibit the presence of irreversible phase transitions of Ni2P into NiOOH due to the weak adsorption ability of the oxygen species caused by strain engineering. In short, this work opens a new gate for using strain nanotechnology to design high-performance OER catalysts.

3D nanostructured Ce-doped CoFe-LDH/NF self-supported catalyst for high-performance OER

Powder electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reactions usually need adhesives for electrocatalytic performance tests, leading to the increase of resistance, reduction of catalyst loading, and easy stripping of the catalyst under long-time or high current operation. In this study, Ce-doped CoFe layered double hydroxides were uniformly grown on nickel foam by a one-step hydrothermal route. A nanostructured self-supported electrode Ce-CoFe-LDH/NF without adhesive was obtained directly, which has a regular nanoneedle morphology with a length of ∼1.2 μm and tip width of ∼20 nm. Adopting Ce3+ ions with a large radius to partially displace Fe3+ ions with a small radius produced lattice distortion and more defects in the host layer of CoFe-LDH, whereby possessing the great potential to enhance catalytic behaviors. Once used as an electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction, Ce-CoFe-LDH/NF shows an outstanding electrocatalytic performance, including an optimized overpotential of 225 mV at 10 mA cm-2, a decreased Tafel slope of 34.34 mV dec-1, and a low charge transfer impedance of 2.4 Ω in 1 M KOH electrolyte. Moreover, the overpotential of the working electrode increased by only 0.04 V after 24 hours and was maintained at a current density of 50 mA cm-2. These results demonstrate a low-cost strategy compared to using noble metal OER electrocatalysts. Thus, this study highlights a ready universal approach to fabricate high-performance supported catalysts for energy-related applications.

Adjusting the valence band center of Co-Ni-bimetallic sulfides through lattice expansion and stacking faults triggered by strain engineering to boost oxygen evolution reaction

Stress engineering can improve catalytic performance by straining the catalyst lattice. An electrocatalyst, Co₃S₄/Ni₃S₂-10%Mo@NC, was prepared with abundant lattice distortion to boost oxygen evolution reaction (OER). With the assistance of the intramolecular steric hindrance effect of metal-organic frameworks, slow dissolution by MoO₄^2- of the Ni substrate and recrystallization of Ni²⁺ was observed in the process of Co(OH)F crystal growth with mild temperature and short time reaction. The lattice expansion and stacking faults created defects inside the Co₃S₄ crystal, improved the material conductivity, optimized the valence band electron distribution of the material, and promoted the rapid conversion of the reaction intermediates. The presence of reactive intermediates of the OER under catalytic conditions was investigated using operando Raman spectroscopy. The electrocatalysts exhibited super high performance, a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 at an overpotential of 164 mV and 100 mA cm^-2 at 223 mV, which were comparable to those of integrated RuO₂. Our work for the first time demonstrates that the dissolution-recrystallization triggered by strain engineering is a good modulation approach to adjust the structure and surface activity of catalyst, suggesting promising industrial application.

Substrate Strain Engineering of Single-Atomic Sn-N4 Sites Embedded in Various Carbon Matrixes for Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalysis

It is still a great challenge to design and synthesize high-efficiency and low-cost single-atom catalysts (SACs) as promising bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, theoretical insights into Sn-N₄ embedded carbon nanotubes, graphene quantum dots, and graphene nanosheets (denoted as Sn-N₄-CNTs, Sn-N₄-GQDs, and Sn-N₄-Gra, respectively) for the ORR/OER are systematically provided. These results show that the protruding Sn atom creates a Sn-N₄ pyramid and induces varied strain transfer between Sn-N₄ and different carbon substrates prior to adsorption of O intermediates, resulting in the opposite response of the adsorption strengths of O intermediates to the substrate curvature of Sn-N₄-CNTs and Sn-N₄-GQDs. The torsional strain induced by OH* and OOH* on the Sn atom of Sn-N₄-CNTs breaks the scaling relations between the adsorption strengths of O intermediates. Consequently, Sn-N₄-CNTs with suitable curvature achieve outstanding ORR performance with very low overpotentials (0.28 V). Furthermore, the increase of curvature boosts the OER activity of Sn-N₄-CNTs. For Sn-N₄-GQDs, high curvature contributes to promoted OER activity but reduced ORR activity. The electronic interactions reveal the electron transfer from the s/p-bands of Sn to the half-filled β states of the frontier orbitals of O intermediates.

Electrochemical Oxidation Encapsulated Ru Clusters Enable Robust Durability for Efficient Oxygen Evolution

Electrochemical oxidization and thermodynamic instability agglomeration are a primary challenge in triggering metal-support interactions (MSIs) by immobilizing metal atoms on a carrier to achieve efficient oxygen evolution reactions (OER). Herein, Ru clusters anchored to the VS₂ surface and the VS₂ nanosheets embedded vertically in carbon cloth (Ru-VS₂ @CC) are deliberately designed to realize high reactivity and exceptional durability. In situ Raman spectroscopy reveals that the Ru clusters are preferentially electro-oxidized to form RuO₂ chainmail, both affording sufficient catalytic sites and protecting the internal Ru core with VS₂ substrates for consistent MSIs. Theoretical calculations elucidate that electrons across the Ru/VS₂ interface aggregate toward the electro-oxidized Ru clusters, while the electronic coupling of Ru 3p and O 2p orbitals boosts a positive shift in the Fermi energy level of Ru, optimizing the adsorption capacity of the intermediates and diminishing the migration barriers of the rate-determining steps. Therefore, the Ru-VS₂ @CC catalyst demonstrated ultra-low overpotentials of 245 mV at 50 mA cm^-2 , while the zinc-air battery maintained a narrow gap (0.62 V) after 470 h of reversible operation. This work has transformed the corrupt into the miraculous and paved a new way for the development of efficient electrocatalysts.
