Abstract
Two new tetradentate N4 ligands (LN4), LN4 = Me2,Me2PyzTACN (1-(2-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)ethyl)-4,7-dimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) and Me2,MeImTACN (1-((1-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl)-4,7-dimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) have been synthesized and their corresponding Fe(II) complexes [FeII(Me2,Me2PyzTACN)(CF3SO3)2], 1Pz, and [FeII(Me2,MeImTACN)(CF3SO3)2], 1Im, have been prepared and characterized. Complexes 1Pz and 1Im catalyse the hydroxylation of C-H bonds of alkanes with excellent efficiencies, using hydrogen peroxide as oxidant. The high H/D kinetic isotope effect values for C-H hydroxylation, large normalized tertiary/secondary C-H (C3/C2) bond selectivities in adamantane oxidation, and high degrees of stereoretention in the oxidation of cis-1,2-dimethylcyclohexane are indicative of metal-based oxidation processes. The complexes also catalyse the oxidation of cyclooctene to form its corresponding epoxide and syn-diol. For 1Pz the epoxide is the main product, while for the analogous complex 1Im the syn-diol predominates. The active oxidant is proposed to be an [(LN4)FeV(O)(OH)]2+ species (2Pz, LN4 = Me2,Me2PyzTACN and 2Im, LN4 = Me2,MeImTACN) which may exist in two tautomeric forms related by a proton shift between the oxo and hydroxo ligands. Isotope labelling experiments show that the oxygen atom in the hydroxylated products originates from both water and hydrogen peroxide, and labelling experiments involving oxygen atom transfer to sterically bulky substrates provide indirect information on the steric influence exerted by the two ligands in the relative reactivities of the two hypervalent iron tautomers. Based on these labelling studies, the steric influence exerted by each of the ligands towards the relative reactivity of the oxo ligands of the corresponding pair of Fe(V)(O)(OH) tautomers can be derived. Furthermore, this steric influence can be gauged relative to related complexes/ligands.

Abstract
Cyclic iron tetracarbenes are an emerging class of macrocyclic iron N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes. They can be considered as an organometallic compound class inspired by their heme analogs, however, their electronic properties differ, e.g. due to the very strong σ-donation of the four combined NHCs in equatorial coordination. The ligand framework of iron tetracarbenes can be readily modified, allowing fine-tuning of the structural and electronic properties of the complexes. The properties of iron tetracarbene complexes are discussed quantitatively and correlations are established. The electronic nature of the tetracarbene ligand allows the isolation of uncommon iron(III) and iron(IV) species and reveals a unique reactivity. Iron tetracarbenes are successfully applied in C-H activation, CO2 reduction, aziridination and epoxidation catalysis and mechanisms as well as decomposition pathways are described. This review will help researchers evaluate the structural and electronic properties of their complexes and target their catalyst properties through ligand design.

Abstract
A family of oxidovanadium(iv) compounds containing linear diaminebis(phenolate (salans) L1-5 ligands (L1 = [MeNCH2CH2NMe(CH2-4-CMe2CH2CMe3-C6H3O)2]2-; L2 = [MeNCH2CH2NMe(CH2-4-CH3-C6H3O)2]2-; L3 = [MeNCH2CH2NMe(CH2-4-Cl-C6H3O)2]2-; L4 = {MeNCH2CH2NMe[CH2-4,6-(CH3)2-C6H2O]2}2-; and L5 = {MeNCH2CH2NMe[CH2-4,6-(Br)2-C6H2O]2}2-) and non-oxidovanadium(iii) with L2,4 and acac ligands has been prepared and characterized by chemical and physical techniques. Reactions of [VO(acac)2] with ligand precursors H2L2,4 in toluene or hexane afforded vanadium(iii) compounds [V(L-κ4ONNO)(acac)] (1, L2; 2, L4), while the use of acetonitrile or ethanol led to the formation of dimeric oxidovanadium(iv) [(VO)2(μ-L-κ4ONNO)2] (3, L1; 4, L2; 5, L3) and monomeric [VO(L-κ4ONNO)] (6, L4, 7, L5) compounds. As shown by X-ray crystallography, compounds 1 and 2 are monomeric, in which the chelating ligands afford octahedral cis-α geometry at the vanadium center. In the dimeric structures of 3-5, the six-coordinate vanadium centers are bridged via two oxygen atoms of the L1-3 ligands while the L4,5 ligands generate square pyramidal structures of the monomeric 6 and 7 compounds. HFEPR studies allowed the determination of the spin Hamiltonian parameters of the S = 1 spin state of the monomeric V(iii) and dimeric V(iv), and S = ½ in monomeric V(iv) compounds. Magnetic measurements of 3-5 indicated weak ferromagnetic metal-metal exchange interactions. A reaction course for the deoxygenation and reduction of vanadyl-salan compounds is proposed.

Abstract
The Fenton reaction is an effective advanced oxidation process occurring in nature and applied in engineering processes toward the degradation of harmful substances, including contaminants of emerging concern. The traditional Fenton application can be remarkably improved by using iron complexes with organic ligands, which allow for the degradation of contaminants at near-neutral pH and for the reduction of sludge production. This work discusses the mechanisms involved both in the classic Fenton process and in the presence of ligands that coordinate iron. Cyclohexane was selected as mechanistic probe, by following the formation of the relevant products, namely, cyclohexanol (A) and cyclohexanone (K). As expected, the classic Fenton process was associated with an A/K ratio of approximately 1, evidence of a dominant free radical behavior. Significantly, the presence of widely common natural and synthetic carboxyl ligands selectively produced mostly the alcoholic species in the first oxidation step. A ferryl-based mechanism was thus preferred when iron complexes were formed. Common iron ligands are here proven to direct the reaction pathway towards a selective metal-based catalysis. Such a system may be more easily engineered than a free radical-based one to safely remove hazardous contaminants from water and minimize the production of harmful intermediates.

Abstract
Novel functions emerge from novel structures. To develop efficient catalytic systems for challenging chemical transformations, chemists often seek inspirations from enzymatic catalysis. A large number of iron complexes supported by nitrogen-rich multidentate ligands have thus been developed to mimic oxo-transfer reactivity of dioxygen-activating metalloenzymes. Such efforts have significantly advanced our understanding of the reaction mechanisms by trapping key intermediates and elucidating their geometric and electronic properties. Critical to the success of this biomimetic approach is the design and synthesis of elaborate ligand systems to balance the thermodynamic stability, structural adaptability, and chemical reactivity. In this Concept article, representative design strategies for biomimetic atom-transfer chemistry are discussed from the perspectives of "ligand builders". Emphasis is placed on how the primary coordination sphere is constructed, and how it can be elaborated further by rational design for desired functions.

Abstract

Non-heme iron(II)
complexes of pentadentate N4Py (N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-N-bis(2-pyridyl)methylamine)
type ligands undergo visible light-driven oxidation to their iron(III)
state in the presence of O2 without ligand degradation.
Under mildly basic conditions, however, highly selective base catalyzed
ligand degradation with O2, to form a well-defined pyridyl-imine
iron(II) complex and an iron(III) picolinate complex, is accelerated
photochemically. Specifically, a pyridyl-CH2 moiety is
lost from the ligand, yielding a potentially N4 coordinating ligand
containing an imine motif. The involvement of reactive oxygen species
other than O2 is excluded; instead, deprotonation at the
benzylic positions to generate an amine radical is proposed as the
rate determining step. The selective nature of the transformation
holds implications for efforts to increase catalyst robustness through
ligand design. Photoaccelerated oxidation
of an aminopyridyl ligand bound
to an Fe(III) ion to a well-defined imine-based Fe(II) complex involves
initial alkyl C−H deprotonation followed by reaction with O2 to form an alkyl peroxyl radical. Intramolecular C−H
abstraction followed by C−N bond cleavage yields picoline aldehyde
and a pyridyl-imine complex. The selectivity of the reaction prevents
further oxidation and holds implications for ligand degradation under
conditions used in oxidation catalysis with peroxides.

Abstract
Iron is of interest as a catalyst because of its established use in the Haber-Bosch process and because of its high abundance and low toxicity. Nitrogen-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) are important ligands in homogeneous catalysis and iron-NHC complexes have attracted increasing attention in recent years but still face problems in terms of stability under oxidative conditions. The structure of the iron(II) complex [1,1'-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-2,2-bi(1H-imidazole)-κN(3)][3,3'-bis(pyridin-2-yl-κN)-1,1'-methanediylbi(1H-imidazol-2-yl-κC(2))](trimethylphosphane-κP)iron(II) bis(hexafluoridophosphate), [Fe(C17H14N6)(C16H12N6)(C3H9P)](PF6)2, features coordination by an organic decomposition product of a tetradentate NHC ligand in an axial position. The decomposition product, a C-C-coupled biimidazole, is trapped by coordination to still-intact iron(II) complexes. Insights into the structural features of the organic decomposition products might help to improve the stability of oxidation catalysts under harsh conditions.

Abstract
The relative energies of spin states of several iron(IV)-oxo complexes and related species have been calculated with DFT methods by employing the B3LYP* functional. We show that such calculations can predict the correct ground spin state of Fe(IV) complexes and can then be used to determine the (1) H NMR spectra of all spin states; the spectral features are remarkably different, hence calculated paramagnetic (1) H NMR spectra can be used to support the structure elucidation of numerous paramagnetic complexes. Applications to a number of stable and reactive iron(IV)-oxo species are described.

Abstract
Selective and stereoretentive oxidation of alkyl C-H bonds has been described over the last decade by employing biologically inspired iron coordination complexes as catalysts and hydrogen peroxide as oxidant. Examples of catalyst dependent C-H site selectivity have started to appear. The current paper describes an account of these findings.

Abstract
A detailed mechanistic study of the hydroxylation of alkane C-H bonds using H2O2 by a family of mononuclear non heme iron catalysts with the formula [Fe(II)(CF3SO3)2(L)] is described, in which L is a tetradentate ligand containing a triazacyclononane tripod and a pyridine ring bearing different substituents at the α and γ positions, which tune the electronic or steric properties of the corresponding iron complexes. Two inequivalent cis-labile exchangeable sites, occupied by triflate ions, complete the octahedral iron coordination sphere. The C-H hydroxylation mediated by this family of complexes takes place with retention of configuration. Oxygen atoms from water are incorporated into hydroxylated products and the extent of this incorporation depends in a systematic manner on the nature of the catalyst, and the substrate. Mechanistic probes and isotopic analyses, in combination with detailed density functional theory (DFT) calculations, provide strong evidence that C-H hydroxylation is performed by highly electrophilic [Fe(V)(O)(OH)L] species through a concerted asynchronous mechanism, involving homolytic breakage of the C-H bond, followed by rebound of the hydroxyl ligand. The [Fe(V)(O)(OH)L] species can exist in two tautomeric forms, differing in the position of oxo and hydroxide ligands. Isotopic-labeling analysis shows that the relative reactivities of the two tautomeric forms are sensitively affected by the α substituent of the pyridine, and this reactivity behavior is rationalized by computational methods.
