A heptanuclear {Dy2Cu5} complex as a single-molecule magnet

The structure and magnetic properties of a complex containing a {Dy2Cu5} core are presented. In 1, the Dy(III) are 9- and the Cu(II) are 4-, 5- and 6-coordinated. Antiferromagnetic interactions cause an irregular energy spectrum with the ground state J = 25/2. The complex is a single molecule magnet exhibiting slow magnetic relaxation in zero magnetic field.

Redox reactions of a pyrazine-bridged RuIII(edta) binuclear complex: spectrochemical, spectroelectrochemical and theoretical studies

The redox reactions of a pyrazine-bridged binuclear [(edta)RuIIIpzRuIII(edta)]2- (edta4- = ethylenediaminetetraacetate; pz = pyrazine) have been investigated spectrochemically and spectroelectrochemically for the first time. The kinetics of the reduction of [(edta)RuIIIpzRuIII(edta)]2- (RuIII-RuIII) with the ascorbic acid anion (HA-) was studied as a function of ascorbic concentration and temperature at a fixed pH 6.0. The overall reaction of RuIII-RuIII was found to consist of two-steps involving the initial formation of the mixed-valence [(edta)RuIIpzRuIII(edta)]3- (RuII-RuIII) intermediate complex (λmax = 462 nm, εmax = 10 000 M-1 cm-1), which undergoes further reduction by ascorbic acid to produce the [(edta)RuIIpzRuII(edta)]4-(RuII-RuII) ultimate product complex (λmax = 540 nm, εmax = 20 700 M-1 cm-1). Our studies further revealed that the RuII-RuIII and RuII-RuII species are formed in the electrochemical reduction of the RuIII-RuIII complex at 0.0 and -0.4 V (vs. SHE), respectively. Formation of RuII-RuIII and RuII-RuII was further corroborated by magnetic moment measurements and DFT calculations. Kinetic data and activation parameters are interpreted in terms of a mechanism involving rate-determining outer-sphere electron transfer between Ru(III) and the ascorbate monoanion (HA-) at pH 6.0. A detailed reaction mechanism in agreement with the spectral, spectro-electrochemical and kinetic data is presented. The results of the spectral and kinetic studies of the reaction of the RuII-RuII complex with molecular oxygen (O2) reveal the ability of the RuII-RuII species to effect the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) leading to the formation of H2O2, a partial reduction product of dioxygen (O2).

Magnetic properties of a europium(III) complex - possible multiplet crossover

A dinuclear complex [(H2O)Zn(LH)Eu(NO3)3] containing a hexadentate Schiff-base {N2O4}-donor ligand LH2- was prepared and characterized by X-ray structural analysis and IR, electronic and fluorescence spectroscopy. DC magnetic data show that upon heating the diamagnetic complex with the ground state Eu(III)-7F0 and Zn(II)-1S switches to paramagnetic species due to the population of 7FJ (J = 1 to 6) magnetic multiplets. The magnetic susceptibility increases from zero, passes through a maximum, and then decreases upon heating. This behaviour can be explained using a spin-orbit Hamiltonian with an axial distortion term. There is an alternative interpretation of the susceptibility data based on a two-level model similar to that used in the spin crossover theory.

Large Magnetic Anisotropy in Mono- and Binuclear cobalt(II) Complexes: The Role of the Distortion of the Coordination Sphere in Validity of the Spin-Hamiltonian Formalism

To get a better insight into understanding the factors affecting the enhancement of the magnetic anisotropy in single molecule (single ion) magnets, two cobalt(II) complexes based on a tridentate ligand 2,6-di(thiazol-2-yl)pyridine substituted at the 4-position with N-methyl-pyrrol-2-yl have been synthesized and studied by X-ray crystallography, AC and DC magnetic data, FIRMS and HFEPR spectra, and theoretical calculations. The change of the counteranion in starting Co(II) salts results in the formation of pentacoordinated mononuclear [Co(mpyr-dtpy)Cl2]·2MeCN (1) complex and binuclear [Co(mpyr-dtpy)2][Co(NCS)4] (2) compound. The observed marked distortion of trigonal bipyramid geometry in 1 and cationic octahedral and anionic tetrahedral units in 2 brings up a question about the validity of the spin-Hamiltonian formalism and the possibility of determining the value and sign of the zero-field splitting D parameter. Both complexes exhibit field-induced slow magnetic relaxation with two or three relaxation channels at BDC = 0.3 T. The high-frequency relaxation time in the reciprocal form τ(HF)-1 = CTn develops according to the Raman relaxation mechanism (for 2, n = 8.8) and the phonon-bottleneck-like mechanism (for 1, n = 2.3). The high-frequency relaxation time at T = 2.0 K and BDC = 0.30 T is τ(HF) = 96 and 47 μs for 1 and 2, respectively.

In Vitro and In Vivo Biological Activities of Dipicolinate Oxovanadium(IV) Complexes

The work is focused on anticancer properties of dipicolinate (dipic)-based vanadium(IV) complexes [VO(dipic)(N^∩N)] bearing different diimines (2-(1H-imidazol-2-yl)pyridine, 2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole, 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione, 1,10-phenanthroline, and 2,2'-bipyridine), as well as differently 4,7-substituted 1,10-phenanthrolines. The antiproliferative effect of V(IV) systems was analyzed in different tumors (A2780, HCT116, and HCT116-DoxR) and normal (primary human dermal fibroblasts) cell lines, revealing a high cytotoxic effect of [VO(dipic)(N^∩N)] with 4,7-dimethoxy-phen (5), 4,7-diphenyl-phen (6), and 1,10-phenanthroline (8) against HCT116-DoxR cells. The cytotoxicity differences between these complexes can be correlated with their different internalization by HCT116-DoxR cells. Worthy of note, these three complexes were found to (i) induce cell death through apoptosis and autophagy pathways, namely, through ROS production; (ii) not to be cytostatic; (iii) to interact with the BSA protein; (iv) do not promote tumor cell migration or a pro-angiogenic capability; (v) show a slight in vivo anti-angiogenic capability, and (vi) do not show in vivo toxicity in a chicken embryo.

Easy-axis magnetic anisotropy in tetragonally elongated cobalt(II) complexes beyond the spin-Hamiltonian formalism

Two hexacoordinate Co(II) complexes [Co(hfac)₂(etpy)₂] (1) and [Co(hfac)₂(bzpyCl)₂] (2) were synthesized and spectrally and structurally characterized. The {CoO₄N₂} chromophore adopts a geometry of the elongated tetragonal bipyramid with a small o-rhombic component. This less common arrangement causes the magnetic data to need be analysed using the Griffith-Figgis model, instead of the commonly used spin-Hamiltonian with zero-field splitting parameters D and E. In the case of the elongated bipyramid for d⁷ complexes, the source of the magnetic anisotropy of an easy-axis type is the axial crystal field splitting Δ_ax. The ab initio CASSCF calculations followed by the NEVPT2 module confirm that the ground electronic term is quasi-degenerate owing to the splitting of the ⁴E_g (D_4h) mother term. The lowest spin-orbit multiplets appear as four Kramers doublets belonging to the Γ₅ irreducible representation of the double point group D₂'. They exhibit a serious mixing of the |±1/2〉 and |±3/2〉 spins which reflects a sizable effect of the spin-orbit coupling. Both complexes exhibit field-supported slow magnetic relaxation governed by the Raman process.

Slow magnetic relaxation in two mononuclear Mn(II) complexes not governed by the over-barrier Orbach process

Two hexacoordinate Mn(II) complexes containing a chelating residue of hexafluoroacetylacetone and (Cl-substituted) 4-benzylpyridine show DC magnetic functions typical for S = 5/2 spin systems: g ∼ 2, D - small. The AC susceptibility confirms a field supported slow magnetic relaxation in which the over-barrier Orbach relaxation process does not play a role. Both systems possess two or three slow relaxation channels.

Structural Diversity, XAS and Magnetism of Copper(II)-Nickel(II) Heterometallic Complexes Based on the [Ni(NCS)6]4- Unit

The new heterometallic compounds, [{Cu(pn)₂}₂Ni(NCS)₆]_n·2nH₂O (1), [{Cu^II(trien)}₂Ni(NCS)₆Cu^I(NCS)]_n (2) and [Cu(tren)(NCS)]₄[Ni(NCS)₆] (3) (pn = 1,2-diaminopropane, trien = triethylenetetramine and tren = tris(2-aminoethylo)amine), were obtained and characterized by X-ray analysis, IR spectra, XAS and magnetic measurements. Compounds 1, 2 and 3 show the structural diversity of 2D, 1D and 0D compounds, respectively. Depending on the polyamine used, different coordination polyhedron for Cu(II) was found, i.e., distorted octahedral (1), square pyramidal (2) and trigonal bipyramidal (3), whereas coordination polyhedron for nickel(II) was always octahedral. It provides an approach for tailoring magnetic properties by proper selection of auxiliary ligands determining the topology. In 1, thiocyanate ligands form bridges between the copper and nickel ions, creating 2D layers of sql topology with weak ferromagnetic interactions. Compound 2 is a mixed-valence copper coordination polymer and shows the rare ladder topology of 1D chains decorated with [Cu^II(tren)]²⁺ antennas as the side chains attached to nickel(II). The ladder rails are formed by alternately arranged Ni(II) and Cu(I) ions connected by N2 thiocyanate anions and rungs made by N3 thiocyanate. For the Cu(I) ions, the tetrahedral thiocyanate environment mixed N/S donor atoms was found, confirming significant coordination spheres rearrangement occurring at the copper precursor together with the reduction in some Cu(II) to Cu(I). Such topology enables significant simplification of the magnetic properties modeling by assuming magnetic coupling inside {Ni^IICu^II₂} trinuclear units separated by diamagnetic [Cu(NCS)(SCN)₃]^3- linkers. Compound 3 shows three discrete mononuclear units connected by N-H…N and N-H…S hydrogen bonds. Analysis of XAS proves that the average ligand character and the covalency of the unoccupied metal d-based orbitals for copper(II) and nickel(II) increase in the following order: 1 → 2 → 3. In 1 and 2, a weak ferromagnetic coupling between copper(II) and nickel(II) was found, but in 2, additional and stronger antiferromagnetic interaction between copper(II) ions prevailed. Compound 3, as an ionic pair, shows, as expected, a spin-only magnetic moment.

Copper(ii) complexes with 2-ethylpyridine and related hydroxyl pyridine derivatives: structural, spectroscopic, magnetic and anticancer in vitro studies

Copper(ii) complexes with 2-ethylpyridine (1 and 2), 2-(hydroxyethyl)pyridine (3) and 2-(hydroxymethyl)pyridine (4) have been synthesized and characterized. All inorganic compounds have been studied by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, vibrational and EPR spectroscopy as well as theoretical methods. The geometry of the complexes 1, 3 and 4 adopts nearly perfect geometry close to square planar (1, 4) or square pyramid (3) stereochemistry, respectively. The distortion of five coordinated copper(ii) ions in complex 2 indicates intermediate geometry between square pyramidal and trigonal pyramidal geometry. Further, the magnetic measurements have shown antiferromagnetic behaviour of the prepared complexes in a wide range of temperatures. The antiferromagnetic behaviour of 2 should originate from the superexchange interactions between each copper(ii) ion by the mixed chloride and μ4-O ion pathways. Besides, the weak antiferromagnetic character of 2 can be also attributed to the presence of intrachain exchange between dimeric units through double oxide ion. In complex 3, strong antiferromagnetic coupling between Cu(ii) centres in the Cu2O2Cl2 moiety is found. The cytotoxicity of all compounds was tested in vitro against various cancer cell lines: human lung adenocarcinoma (A549), human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF7), human prostate carcinoma; derived from metastatic site: brain (DU-145) and two normal cell lines: human embryonic kidney (HEK293T) and human keratinocyte (HaCat). Furthermore, Pluronic P-123 micelles loaded with selected complexes (1 and 3) were proposed to overcome low solubility and to minimize systemic side effects. More detailed study revealed that complex 3 loaded inside micelles causes DU-145 cells' death with simultaneous decrease of mitochondrial membrane potential and a high level of reactive oxygen species generation. The stability of the compounds 1-4 in DMSO was confirmed by UV-Vis and FT-IR spectra studies.

Hybrid Cu-Containing Compounds Based on Lacunary Strandberg Anions: Synthesis under Mild Conditions, Crystal Structure, and Magnetic Properties

A one-pot reaction of a copper source (metallic powder Cu⁰ or Cu²⁺ salts) and bpy (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) in the presence of (NH₄)₂HPO₄ and (NH₄)₆Mo₇O₂₄·4H₂O yields heterometallic hybrid compounds of the general type {[Cu(bpy)_n(H₂O)_m]_p[P₂Mo_xO_y]}. The structures exhibit a number of phosphomolybdate POMs including not only a common Strandberg anion [P₂Mo₅O₂₃]^6- but also its unprecedented bi- and trilacunary derivatives [P₂Mo₃O₁₈]^8- and [P₂Mo₂O₁₅]^8-. The structural determinants including the metal source (copper powder vs copper salts), counterion of the salts, and stoichiometry of the reagents were examined. An ex situ EPR study revealed the formation of different Cu^II complexes in the reaction mixture depending on the copper precursor. The obtained compounds have been found to possess selectivity toward the sorption of methylene blue in a mixture of organic dyes. DC magnetic measurements of 1-3 indicate rather strong antiferromagnetic metal-metal exchange interactions. Compound 1 exhibits field-induced slow magnetic relaxation in AC magnetic measurements, which is a rarely observed phenomenon among Cu(II) complexes.

Dielectric-Optical Switches: Photoluminescent, EPR, and Magnetic Studies on Organic-Inorganic Hybrid (azetidinium)2MnBr4

A new organic-inorganic hybrid, AZEMnBr, has been synthesized and characterized. The thermal differential scanning calorimetry, differential thermal analysis, and thermogravimetric analyses indicate one structural phase transition (PT) at 346 and 349 K, on cooling and heating, respectively. AZEMnBr crystallizes at 365 K in the orthorhombic, Pnma, structure, which transforms to monoclinic P2₁/n at 200 K. Due to the X-ray diffraction studies, the anionic MnBr₄^2- moiety is discrete. The azetidinium cations show dynamical disorder in the high-temperature phase. In the proposed structural PT, the mechanism is classified as an order-disorder type. The structural changes affect the dielectric response. In this paper, the multiple switches between low- and high- dielectric states are presented. In addition, it was also observed that the crystal possesses a mutation of fluorescent properties between phase ON and OFF in the PT's point vicinity. We also demonstrate that EPR spectroscopy effectively detects PTs in structurally diverse Mn(II) complexes. AZEMnBr compounds show DC magnetic data consistent with the S = 5/2 spin system with small zero-field splitting, which was confirmed by EPR measurements and slow magnetic relaxation under the moderate DC magnetic field typical for a single-ion magnet behavior. Given the above, this organic-inorganic hybrid can be considered a rare example of multifunctional materials that exhibit dielectric, optical, and magnetic activity.

Two out of Three Musketeers Fight against Cancer: Synthesis, Physicochemical, and Biological Properties of Phosphino CuI, RuII, IrIII Complexes

Two novel phosphine ligands, Ph2PCH2N(CH2CH3)3 (1) and Ph2PCH2N(CH2CH2CH2CH3)2 (2), and six new metal (Cu(I), Ir(III) and Ru(II)) complexes with those ligands: iridium(III) complexes: Ir(η5-Cp*)Cl2(1) (1a), Ir(η5-Cp*)Cl2(2) (2a) (Cp*: Pentamethylcyclopentadienyl); ruthenium(II) complexes: Ru(η6-p-cymene)Cl2(1) (1b), Ru(η6-p-cymene)Cl2(2) (2b) and copper(I) complexes: [Cu(CH3CN)2(1)BF4] (1c), [Cu(CH3CN)2(2)BF4] (2c) were synthesized and characterized using elemental analysis, NMR spectroscopy, and ESI-MS spectrometry. Copper(I) complexes turned out to be highly unstable in the presence of atmospheric oxygen in contrast to ruthenium(II) and iridium(III) complexes. The studied Ru(II) and Ir(III) complexes exhibited promising cytotoxicity towards cancer cells in vitro with IC50 values significantly lower than that of the reference drug—cisplatin. Confocal microscopy analysis showed that Ru(II) and Ir(III) complexes effectively accumulate inside A549 cells with localization in cytoplasm and nuclei. A precise cytometric analysis provided clear evidence for the predominance of apoptosis in induced cell death. Furthermore, the complexes presumably induce the changes in the cell cycle leading to G2/M phase arrest in a dose-dependent manner. Gel electrophoresis experiments revealed that Ru(II) and Ir(III) inorganic compounds showed their unusual low genotoxicity towards plasmid DNA. Additionally, metal complexes were able to generate reactive oxygen species as a result of redox processes, proved by gel electrophoresis and cyclic voltamperometry. In vitro cytotoxicity assays were also carried out within multicellular tumor spheroids and efficient anticancer action on these 3D assemblies was demonstrated. It was proven that the hydrocarbon chain elongation of the phosphine ligand coordinated to the metal ions does not influence the cytotoxic effect of resulting complexes in contrast to metal ions type.

A novel o-vanillin Fe(III) complex catalytically active in C-H oxidation: exploring the magnetic exchange interactions and spectroscopic properties with different DFT functionals

The novel complex [Fe^IIICl(L)₂(H₂O)] (1) was synthesized by interaction of iron(III) chloride with ethanol solution of o-vanillin (HL) and characterized by IR, UV/Vis spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The molecules of 1 in the solid state are joined into supramolecular dimeric units, where a set of strong hydrogen bonds predefines the structure of the dimer according to the "key-lock" principle. From the Hirshfield surface analysis the contribution of π⋯π stacking to the overall stabilization of the dimer was found to be negligible. Broken symmetry DFT calculations suggested the presence of long-range antiferromagnetic interactions (J = -0.12 cm^-1 for H = -JS₁S₂ formalism) occurring through the Fe-O⋯O-Fe pathway, as evidenced by the studies of the model dimers where the water molecules were substituted by acetonitrile and acetone ones. The benchmark studies using a set of literature examples and various DFT functionals revealed the hybrid-GGA B3LYP as the best one for prediction of Fe^III⋯Fe^III antiferromagnetic exchange couplings of small magnitude. Magnetic susceptibility measurements confirmed antiferromagnetic coupling between the metal atoms in 1 with a coupling constant of -0.35 cm^-1. Catalytic studies demonstrated that 1 acts as an efficient catalyst in the oxidation of cyclohexane with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of nitric acid promoter and under mild conditions (yield up to 37% based on the substrate), while tert-butylhydroperoxide (TBHP) and m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid (m-CPBA) as oxidants exhibit less efficiency. Combined UV/TDDFT studies evidence the structural rearrangement of 1 in acetonitrile with the formation of [Fe^IIICl(L)₂(CH₃CN)] species. The TDDFT benchmark using nine common DFT functionals and two model compounds (o-vanillin and [Fe^III(H₂O)₆]³⁺ ion) support the hybrid meta-GGA M06-2X functional as the one most correctly predicting the excited state structure for the Fe(III) complexes, under the conditions studied.

Ferro- vs. antiferromagnetic exchange between two Ni(II) ions in a series of Schiff base heterometallic complexes: what makes the difference?

Three new NiII/ZnII heterometallics, [NiZnL'2(OMe)Cl]2 (1), [NiZnL''(Dea)Cl]2·2DMF (2) and [Ni2(H3L''')2(o-Van)(MeOH)2]Cl·[ZnCl2(H4L''')(MeOH)]·2MeOH (3), containing three-dentate Schiff bases as well as methanol or diethanolamine (H2Dea) or o-vanillin (o-VanH), all deprotonated, as bridging ligands were synthesized and structurally characterized. The Schiff base ligands were produced in situ from o-VanH and CH3NH2 (HL'), or NH2OH (HL"), or 2-amino-2-hydroxymethyl-propane-1,3-diol (H4L'''); a zerovalent metal (Ni and Zn in 1, Zn only in 2 and 3) was employed as a source of metal ions. The first two complexes are dimers with a Ni2Zn2O6 central core, while the third compound is a novel heterometallic cocrystal salt solvate built of a neutral zwitterionic ZnII Schiff base complex and of ionic salt containing dinuclear NiII complex cations. The crystal structures contain either centrosymmetric (1 and 2) or non-symmetric di-nickel fragment (3) with NiNi distances in the range 3.146-3.33 Å. The exchange coupling is antiferromagnetic for 1, J = 7.7 cm-1, and ferromagnetic for 2, J = -6.5 cm-1 (using the exchange Hamiltonian in a form Ĥ = Jŝ1ŝ2). The exchange interactions in 1 and 2 are comparable to the zero-field splitting (ZFS). High-field EPR revealed moderate magnetic anisotropy of opposite signs: D = 2.27 cm-1, E = 0.243 cm-1 (1) and D = -4.491 cm-1, E = -0.684 cm-1 (2). Compound 3 stands alone with very weak ferromagnetism (J = -0.6 cm-1) and much stronger magnetic anisotropy with D = -11.398 cm-1 and E = -1.151 cm-1. Attempts to calculate theoretically the exchange coupling (using the DFT "broken symmetry" method) and ZFS parameters (with the ab initio CASSCF method) were successful in predicting the trends of J and D among the three complexes, while the quantitative results were less good for 1 and 3.

Investigation of vanadium(III) and vanadium(IV) compounds supported by the linear diaminebis(phenolate) ligands: correlation between structures and magnetic properties

A family of oxidovanadium(iv) compounds containing linear diaminebis(phenolate (salans) L1-5 ligands (L1 = [MeNCH2CH2NMe(CH2-4-CMe2CH2CMe3-C6H3O)2]2-; L2 = [MeNCH2CH2NMe(CH2-4-CH3-C6H3O)2]2-; L3 = [MeNCH2CH2NMe(CH2-4-Cl-C6H3O)2]2-; L4 = {MeNCH2CH2NMe[CH2-4,6-(CH3)2-C6H2O]2}2-; and L5 = {MeNCH2CH2NMe[CH2-4,6-(Br)2-C6H2O]2}2-) and non-oxidovanadium(iii) with L2,4 and acac ligands has been prepared and characterized by chemical and physical techniques. Reactions of [VO(acac)2] with ligand precursors H2L2,4 in toluene or hexane afforded vanadium(iii) compounds [V(L-κ4ONNO)(acac)] (1, L2; 2, L4), while the use of acetonitrile or ethanol led to the formation of dimeric oxidovanadium(iv) [(VO)2(μ-L-κ4ONNO)2] (3, L1; 4, L2; 5, L3) and monomeric [VO(L-κ4ONNO)] (6, L4, 7, L5) compounds. As shown by X-ray crystallography, compounds 1 and 2 are monomeric, in which the chelating ligands afford octahedral cis-α geometry at the vanadium center. In the dimeric structures of 3-5, the six-coordinate vanadium centers are bridged via two oxygen atoms of the L1-3 ligands while the L4,5 ligands generate square pyramidal structures of the monomeric 6 and 7 compounds. HFEPR studies allowed the determination of the spin Hamiltonian parameters of the S = 1 spin state of the monomeric V(iii) and dimeric V(iv), and S = ½ in monomeric V(iv) compounds. Magnetic measurements of 3-5 indicated weak ferromagnetic metal-metal exchange interactions. A reaction course for the deoxygenation and reduction of vanadyl-salan compounds is proposed.

Hybrid compound based on diethylenetriaminecopper(ii) cations and scarce V-monosubstituted β-octamolybdate as water oxidation catalyst

Herein, we report on a new hybrid compound (NH₄){[Cu(dien)(H₂O)₂]₂[β-VMo₇O₂₆]}·1.5H₂O (1), where dien = diethylenetriamine, containing an extremely rare mixed-metal pseudo-octamolybdate cluster. An ex situ EPR spectroscopy provided insights into the formation of paramagnetic species in reaction mixture and in solution of 1. The magneto-structural correlations revealed weak antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between the [Cu(dien)]²⁺ cations transmitted by intermolecular pathways. The cyclic voltammetry showed the one-electron process associated with the Cu³⁺/Cu²⁺ oxidation followed by the multi-electron catalytic wave due to water oxidation with a faradaic yield of 86%. The title compound was thus employed in homogeneous water oxidation catalysis using tris(bipyridine)ruthenium photosensitizer. At pH 8.0, efficiency of the catalytic system attained 0.19 turnovers per second supported by the relatively mild water oxidation overpotential of 0.54 V.

A new hybrid compound (NH₄){[Cu(dien)(H₂O)₂]₂[β-VMo₇O₂₆]}·1.5H₂O was employed in homogeneous water oxidation catalysis. At pH 8.0, its efficiency attains 0.19 turnovers per second, supported by the relatively mild water oxidation overpotential of 0.54 V.

Heterometallic Group 4-Lanthanide Oxo-alkoxide Precursors for Synthesis of Binary Oxide Nanomaterials

In this study, an efficient procedure for the synthesis of uncommon group 4-lanthanide oxo-alkoxide derivatives was developed. Heterometallic clusters with the structures [La₂Ti₄(μ₄-O)₂(μ₃-OEt)₂(μ-OEt)₈(OEt)₆(Cl)₂(HOEt)₂] (1), [La₂Zr₂(μ₃-O)(μ-OEt)₅(μ-Cl)(OEt)₂(HOEt)₄(Cl)₄]_n (2), [La₂Hf₂(μ₃-O)(μ-OEt)₅(μ-Cl)(OEt)₂(HOEt)₄(Cl)₄]_n (3), [Nd₂Ti₄(μ₄-O)₂(μ₃-OEt)₂(μ-OEt)₈(OEt)₆(HOEt)₂(Cl)₂] (4), [Nd₄Zr₄(μ₃-O)₂(μ-OEt)₁₀(μ-Cl)₄(OEt)₈(HOEt)₁₀(Cl)₂] (5), and [Nd₄Hf₄(μ₃-O)₂(μ-OEt)₁₀(μ-Cl)₄(OEt)₈(HOEt)₁₀(Cl)₂] (6) were synthesized via the reaction of a metallocene dichloride, Cp₂M'Cl₂ (where M' = Ti, Zr, and Hf), and metallic lanthanum or neodymium in the presence of excess ethanol. This procedure gave crystalline precursors with molecular stoichiometries suitable for obtaining group 4-lanthanide oxide materials. Compounds 1-6 were examined by analytical and spectroscopic techniques and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties of 5 and 6 were investigated by using direct and alternating current (dc and ac) susceptibility measurements. The results indicated weak antiferromagnetic interactions between Nd^III ions and a field-supported slow magnetic relaxation. Lanthanum-titanium compound 1 decomposed at 950 °C to give the perovskite compound La_0.66TiO₃ and small amounts of rutile TiO₂. Under the same conditions, 4 decomposed to give a mixture of Nd₄Ti₉O₂₄ and Nd_0.66TiO₃. When 4 was calcined at 1300 °C, decomposition of Nd₄Ti₉O₂₄ to Nd_0.66TiO₃ and TiO₂ was observed. Calcination of 2, 3, 5, and 6 at 950-1500 °C led to the selective formation of heterometallic La₂Zr₂O₇, La₂Hf₂O₇, Nd₂Zr₂O₇, and Nd₂Hf₂O₇ phases, respectively.

Cu(II) complexes with peptides from FomA protein containing -His-Xaa-Yaa-Zaa-His and -His-His-motifs. ROS generation and DNA degradation

Mono- and dinuclear Cu(II) complexes with Ac-PTVHNEYH-NH₂ (L1) and Ac-NHHTLND-NH₂ (L2) peptides from FomA protein of Fusobacterium nucleatum were studied by potentiometry, spectroscopic methods (UV-Vis, CD, EPR) and MS technique. The dominant mononuclear complexes for L1 ligand are: CuHL (pH range 5.0-6.0) with 2N {2N_im}, CuH_-2L (pH range 8.0-8.5) and CuH_-3L species (above pH 9.0) with 4N {N_im, 3N^-} coordination modes. The complexes: CuH_-1L with 3N {2N_im, N^-}, CuH_-2L with 3N {N_im, 2N^-} and CuH_-3L with 4N {N_im, 3N^-} binding sites are proposed for the L2 ligand. Probably in the CuH_-2L complex for CuL2 system the second His residue in His-His sequence is bound to Cu(II) ion, while the first His residue may stabilize this complex by His-His and/or His-Cu(II) interactions. The dominant dinuclear Cu₂L1 complexes in the pH range 6.5-10.5 are: the Cu₂H_-4L and Cu₂H_-6L species with 3N{N_im, 2N^-}4N{N_im, 3N^-} and 4N{N_im, 3N^-}4N{N_im, 3N^-} binding sites, respectively. In the case of the Cu₂L2 complex in the pH range 7.2-10.5, the Cu₂H_-4L and Cu₂H_-7L species dominate with 2N{N_im, N^-}4N{N_im, 3N^-} and (Cu(OH)₄^2-4N{N_im, 3N^-}) coordination modes, respectively. The ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) by uncomplexed Cu(II) ions, ligands and their complexes at pH 7.4 in the presence of hydrogen peroxide or ascorbic acid was studied. UV-Vis, luminescence, EPR spin trapping and gel electrophoresis methods were used. Both complexes produce higher level of ROS compared to those of their ligands. ROS produced by Cu(II) complexes are hydroxyl radical and singlet oxygen, which contribute to oxidative DNA cleavage.

Dinuclear Copper(II) Complexes with Schiff Bases Derived from 2-Hydroxy-5-Methylisophthalaldehyde and Histamine or 2-(2-Aminoethyl)pyridine and Their Application as Magnetic and Fluorescent Materials in Thin Film Deposition

Two Cu(II) complexes, 1 and 2, with tridentate Schiff bases derived from 2-hydroxy-5-methylisophthalaldehyde and histamine HL1 or 2-(2-aminoethyl)pyridine HL2, respectively, were obtained and characterized by X-ray crystallography, spectroscopic (UV-vis, fluorescence, IR, and EPR), magnetic, and thermal methods. Despite the fact that the chelate formed by the NNO ligand donors (C26-C25H2-C24H2-N23=C23H-C22-C19Ph(O1)-C2(Ph)-C3H=N3-C4H2-C5H2-C6 fragment) are identical, as well as the synthesis of Cu(II) complexes (Cu:L = 2:1 molar ratio) was performed in the same manner, the structures of the complexes differ significantly. The complex 1, {[Cu2(L1)Cl2]2[CuCl4]}·2MeCN·2H2O, consists of [Cu2(L1)Cl2]+ units in which Cu(II) ions are bridged by the HL1 ligand oxygen and each of these Cu(II) ions is connected with Cu(II) ions of the next dimeric unit via two bridging Cl- ions to form a chain structure. In the dinuclear [Cu2(L2)Cl3]0.5MeCN complex 2, each Cu(II) is asymmetrically bridged by the ligand oxygen and chloride anions, whereas the remaining chloride anions are apically bound to Cu(II) cations. In contrast to the complex 1, the square-pyramidal geometry of the both Cu(II) centers is strongly distorted. The magnetic study revealed that antiferromagnetic interactions in the complex 2 are much stronger than in the complex 1, which was corresponded with magneto-structural examination. Thin layers of the studied Cu(II) complexes were deposited on Si(111) by the spin coating method and studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and fluorescence spectroscopy. The Cu(II) complexes and their thin layers exhibited fluorescence between 489-509 nm and 460-464 nm for the compounds and the layers, respectively. Additionally, DFT calculations were performed to explain the structures and electronic spectral properties of the ligands.

ROS-mediated lipid peroxidation as a result of Cu(ii) interaction with FomA protein fragments of F. nucleatum: relevance to colorectal carcinogenesis

The ability of the studied FomA protein fragments of Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) with copper(ii) ions (Cu(ii)-Ac-KGHGNGEEGTPTVHNE-NH2 (1Cu) and its cyclic analogue Cu(ii)-cyclo(KGHGNGEEGTPTVHNE) (2Cu)) to induce reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, as a result of red-ox processes, was determined by UV-Vis, luminescence methods, spin trapping and cyclic voltamperometry. The contribution of 1O2 and ˙OH to DNA degradation was proved using gel electrophoresis. Furthermore, the pronounced generation of ROS by mouse colon carcinoma cells (CT26) stimulated by both copper(ii) complexes was confirmed. A fluorescence method allowed the total amounts of ROS generated inside the CT26 cells to be detected, while the spin trapping technique proved that free radicals mainly attached to the membrane surface. These last results are in agreement with the data obtained from the ICP-MS method, which demonstrates that 1Cu and 2Cu complexes are not efficiently accumulated inside the cell. Furthermore, the role of ROS in lipid peroxidation was established. The above-mentioned factors may clearly indicate the contribution of ROS generated by the studied copper(ii) complexes to colonic cell damage, which can lead to a carcinogenesis process. This study may be an important step to recognize and understand the mechanism of colon cancer initiation.

Characterization of a Mixed-Valence Ru(II)/Ru(III) Ion-Pair Complex. Unexpected High-Frequency Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Evidence for Ru(III)-Ru(III) Dimer Coupling

In this contribution, we report the synthesis and full characterization of the first mixed-valence Ru(II)/Ru(III) ion-pair complex, [Ru^II(bipy)₂(pic)]⁺[cis-Ru^IIICl₂(pic)₂]^-, in the solid state and in aqueous solution, where bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine and pic^- = picolinate. In addition, unexpected high-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance evidence for interactions between two neighboring Ru(III) ions, resulting in a triplet state, S = 1, was found.

A Cu/Zn heterometallic complex with solvent-binding cavity, catalytic activity for the oxidation of 1-phenylethanol and unusual magnetic properties

Mononuclear and polymeric complexes of zinc(ii) and copper(ii) have been synthesized using two isomers of the hemi-salen ligand with a different mutual orientation of donor atoms. The heterometallic Cu/Zn metallocycle features a catalytic niche filled with the molecule of water and molecules of methanol. This unusual compound exhibits both pronounced catalytic activity in the reaction of oxidation of a secondary alcohol to ketone and field induced slow magnetic relaxation, which is a very rare phenomenon among Cu(ii) complexes.

X-ray structure and magnetic and fluorescence characteristics of new Cu(ii) complexes with Schiff bases derived from 2-(2-aminoethyl)pyridine and 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde; morphology and fluorescence of their thin films

Cu(ii) complexes with tridentate Schiff bases derived from 2-(2-aminoethyl)pyridine and 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde and COO-, Cl- and NO3- as ligands were obtained and characterized by crystal and molecular, spectroscopic (UV-Vis, fluorescence, IR, and EPR), magnetic and thermal methods. The X-ray crystal structure analysis revealed a distorted square planar geometry for [Cu(ii)(PEMN)CH3COO]CHCl3, 1, and [Cu(ii)(PEMN)Cl], 2, and a distorted square-pyramidal geometry for [Cu(ii)(PEMN)NO3], 3, corresponding to the values of EPR g-matrix diagonal components. The copper(ii) complexes exhibited fluorescence in solution in the range of 370-410 nm. Thin layers of the studied copper(ii) complexes were deposited on Si(111) by a spin coating method and studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and fluorescence spectroscopy. For copper(ii) layers (2/Si), the most intense fluorescence band from an intraligand and a d-d transition between 490 and 550 nm was observed.

Iron(iii) bis(pyrazol-1-yl)acetate based decanuclear metallacycles: synthesis, structure, magnetic properties and DFT calculations

The synthesis, structural aspects, magnetic interpretation and theoretical rationalizations for a new member of the ferric wheel family, a decanuclear iron(iii) complex with the formula [Fe₁₀(bdtbpza)₁₀(μ₂-OCH₃)₂₀] (1), featuring the N,N,O tridentate bis(3,5-di-tert-butylpyrazol-1-yl)acetate ligand, are reported. The influence of the steric effect on both the core geometry and coordination mode is observed. Temperature dependent (2.0-300 K range) magnetic susceptibility studies carried out on complexes 1 established unequivocally antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions between high-spin iron(iii) centers (S = 5/2), leading to a ground state S = 0. The mechanism of AF intramolecular coupling was proved using a broken-symmetry approach within the density functional method at the B3LYP/def2-TZVP(-f)/def2-SVP level of theory.
