Abstract
An asymmetric tandem esterification/Michael addition reaction of β-keto acylpyrazoles with o-hydroxychalcones has been established under the catalysis of a bifunctional squaramide-tertiary amine. A wide variety of biorelevant 3,4-dihydrocoumarin derivatives were generally obtained in high yields (up to 93%) with excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivities (>19:1 dr, up to 93% ee) under mild reaction conditions. This reaction represents the successful application of β-keto acylpyrazoles as 2C building blocks in catalytic asymmetric cyclizations.

Abstract
The first organocatalytic asymmetric addition of aromatic α-cyanoketones to in situ-generated o-quinone methides has been developed. The products 3,4-dihydrocoumarin and tetrasubstituted chroman were obtained via addition of aromatic α-cyanoketones to in situ-generated o-quinone methides followed by treatment with 0.7 N HCl. With 10 mol % catalyst, the desired products were obtained in high enantio- and diastereoselectivities.

Abstract
A novel Brønsted base system for the diastereoselective dimerization of azlactones using trichloroacetate salts and acetonitrile has been developed. Desired products were obtained in good yields (60-93%) and with up to >19:1 dr after one hour of reaction. Additionally, the relative stereochemistry of the major dimer was assigned as being trans, by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The kinetic reaction profile was determined by using 1H NMR reaction monitoring and revealed a second order overall kinetic profile. Furthermore, by employing this methodology, a diastereoselective total synthesis of a functionalized analogue of streptopyrrolidine was accomplished in 65% overall yield.

Abstract
Organocatalysis, now running its second decade of life, is being considered one of the main tools a synthetic chemist has to perform asymmetric catalysis. In this review the synthesis of six-membered rings, that contain multiple chiral centers, either by a ring closing process or by a functionalization reaction on an already existing six-membered ring, utilizing bifunctional (thio)ureas will be summarized. Initially, the use of primary amine-thioureas as organocatalysts for the above transformation is being discussed, followed by the examples employing secondary amine-thioureas. Finally, the use of tertiary amine-thioureas and miscellaneous examples are presented.
