Abstract
In 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropyl alcohol (HFIP), gem-bis(triflyl)cyclobutenes, which can be prepared by the (2+2) cycloaddition reaction of Tf2C=CH2 with alkynes, underwent desulfination to generate the corresponding cyclobutenyl cation. This unique reactivity was successfully applied to the Friedel-Crafts type cyclobutenylation reaction of several (hetero)aromatic compounds.

Abstract
Allylic sulfone-embedded cyclobutenes have been prepared in one pot from alkynes. The carbocycle and the alkenyl sulfone moieties were installed through consecutive bis(triflyl)cyclobutenylation of a triple bond and tetra-n-butylammonium fluoride (TBAF)-assisted hydrodesulfonylation of an allylic bis(sulfone). It is noteworthy that 1,1-bis(triflyl)ethylene acts as a CF3SO2CH═CH2 source for the first time.

Abstract
A practical and efficient method to access polysubstituted aryl sulfides has been discovered via a Lewis acid-catalyzed reaction between alkynyl sulfide and 2-pyrone, involving a Diels-Alder/retro-Diels-Alder pathway. Alkynyl sulfide as an electron-rich dienophile and 2-pyrones as electron-poor dienes are conjunctively transformed into a series of polysubstituted aryl sulfides with broad functional group compatibility in good to excellent yields (40 examples, 43-88% yield). The robustness and practicality of the protocol has been demonstrated through gram-scale synthesis and the ease of transformation of the resulting products.

Abstract
As an easy-to-handle reagent for the in situ generation of outstandingly electrophilic Tf2C=CH2 (Tf=CF3SO2), we have designed and synthesised a novel 4-substituted 2-fluoropyridinium zwitterion, in which a partially fluorinated alkyl group is attached to the pyridinium 4-position. Its zwitterionic nature has been well characterised by quantum chemical bonding analysis. By using this reagent, a wide variety of organic compounds, including commercial bioactive agents, were successfully decorated by the strongly acidic or ionic functionality. Remarkably, the 4-substituted 2-fluoropyridine derivative, which results from the zwitterion with the generation of Tf2C=CH2, can be rapidly separated and recovered from the reaction mixture appropriately using distillation, organic solvent extraction, or fluorous solid phase extraction techniques. Such multi-optionality for the purification methods favours in the isolation of the strongly acidic and/or ionic products.

Abstract
During the past decade, carbon (C-H) acids depicted as 'Tf2 CHR' (Tf=CF3 SO2 ) have attracted considerable attention as a new class of superacidic molecules, which show stronger acidity than sulfuric acid molecules. In recent years, the author has developed a synthetic methodology for such strong acids and has opened the door to chemistry of highly stabilised carbanions [Tf2 CR]- , which are the conjugate bases of the carbon acids. These carbanion-containing salts are stable and easy-to-handle species. Our efforts have revealed that the ionic but lipophilic characters of this type of carbanion can be used as a unique 'substituent' for increasing both the water solubility and the lipophilicity of organic compounds. This Personal Account provides an overview of our [Tf2 CR]- chemistry, including its synthesis, structure, reactivity, and applications.

Abstract
AbstractA new method for the preparation of halocyclobutenes is described. The developed process involves the dehydration of halocyclobutanols by using tetrafluoroboric acid–diethyl ether complex in dichloromethane at room temperature. The process allows for high yields of halocyclobutenes to be achieved by using alcohols that do not trigger the formation of isomeric allylic halides.

Abstract
The carboarylation reaction of biphenyl-alkynes was successfully triggered by electrophilic attack of 1,1-bis(triflyl)ethylene on the alkyne moiety to give polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) decorated by superacidic carbon acid functionality. Neutralisation of thus obtained acids with NaHCO3 yielded the corresponding sodium salts, which showed improved solubility in both aqueous and organic solvents.

Abstract
N-Quaternized ketene N,O-acetals are typically an unstable, transient class of compounds most commonly observed as reactive intermediates. In this report, we describe a general synthetic approach to a variety of bench-stable N-quaternized ketene N,O-acetals via treatment of pyridine or aniline bases with acetylenic ethers and an appropriate Brønsted or Lewis acid (triflic acid, triflimide, or scandium(III) triflate). The resulting pyridinium and anilinium salts can be used as reagents or synthetic intermediates in multiple reaction types. For example, N-(1-ethoxyvinyl)pyridinium or anilinium salts can thermally release highly reactive O-ethyl ketenium ions for use in acid catalyst-free electrophilic aromatic substitutions. N-(1-Ethoxyvinyl)-2-halopyridinium salts can be employed in peptide couplings as a derivative of Mukaiyama reagents or react with amines in nucleophilic aromatic substitutions under mild conditions. These preliminary reactions illustrate the broad potential of these currently understudied compounds in organic synthesis.

Abstract
A base-mediated semihydrogenation of ynamides using p-toluenesulfonyl hydrazide as an inexpensive and easy-to-handle hydrogen donor is reported. This transition-metal-free protocol avoids overhydrogenation and reduction of other functional groups, generating the thermodynamically unfavorable Z-enamides exclusively.

Abstract
A facile synthetic method for the preparation of allyl sulfoxides by S-allylation of sulfinate esters proceeds through sulfonium intermediates without [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement and further Pummerer-type reactions of the resulting allyl sulfoxides. On the basis of the plausible reaction mechanism involving sulfonium salt intermediates, S-alkynylation and S-arylation were also accomplished.

Abstract
A regioselective synthesis of general applicability has been designed for the one-pot preparation of 2,3-disubstituted-cyclobutenones from iodoalkynes through cyclobutenylation, Suzuki CC coupling, and ketone formation. This one-pot methodology has been applied to the selective synthesis of an orally active cyclooxygenase II inhibitor. Furthermore, the obtained cyclobut-2-en-1-ones were used as synthons in several transformations, such as, the preparation of β-lactams, phthalazines, cyclohexa-2,5-dien-1-ones, and cyclopent-3-en-1-ones.

Abstract
Heteroatom-substituted alkynes have attracted a significant amount of interest in the synthetic community due to the polarized nature of these alkynes and their utility in a wide range of reactions. One specific class of heteroatom-substituted alkynes combines this utility with the presence of an azole moiety. These N-alkynyl azoles have been known for nearly 50 years, but recently there has been a tremendous increase in the number of reports detailing the synthesis and utility of this class of compound. While much of the chemistry of N-alkynyl azoles mirrors that of the more extensively studied N-alkynyl amides (ynamides), there are notable exceptions. In addition, as azoles are extremely common in natural products and pharmaceuticals, these N-alkynyl azoles have high potential for accessing biologically important compounds. In this review, the literature reports of N-alkynyl azole synthesis, reactions, and uses have been assembled. Collectively, these reports demonstrate the growth in this area and the promise of exploiting N-alkynyl azoles in synthesis.

Abstract
A formal [2 + 2] cycloaddition of 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione (PTAD) with electron-rich alkynyl sulfides and selenides is described. These investigations provide a convenient method to access diazacyclobutenes in good yield while tolerating a relatively broad substrate scope of thio-acetylenes. This method provides ready access to a unique and hitherto rarely accessible class of heterocycles. A combination of dynamic NMR, X-ray crystallography, and computation sheds light on the potential aromaticity of the scaffold.

Abstract
Phosphorus 1,3- and 1,4-carbabetaines with 'P(+)-C-C(-)' and 'P(+)-C-C-C(-)' structures, respectively, in which the carbanion moiety was significantly stabilized by two trifluoromethylsulfonyl groups, have been synthesized and characterized. Analysis of their X-ray crystal structures revealed that any attractive interactions between the anionic and cationic moieties were negligibly weak. This result was corroborated by using natural bond orbital (NBO) and Bader's quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) models. In contrast, performing the same analysis of a known 1,3-carbabetaine equivalent, which can be drawn as a 'P(+)-C-C=C-O(-)' resonance structure, revealed pronounced charge-transfer interactions between the anionic and cationic moieties.

Abstract
The intermolecular gold(I)-catalyzed reaction between arylalkynes and alkenes leads to cyclobutenes by a [2 + 2] cycloaddition, which takes place stepwise, first by formation of cyclopropyl gold(I) carbenes, followed by a ring expansion. However, 1,3-butadienes are also formed in the case of ortho-substituted arylalkynes by a metathesis-type process. The corresponding reaction of alkenes with aryl-1,3-butadiynes, ethynylogous to arylalkynes, leads exclusively to cyclobutenes. A comprehensive mechanism for the gold(I)-catalyzed reaction of alkynes with alkenes is proposed on the basis of density functional theory calculations, which shows that the two pathways leading to cyclobutenes or dienes are very close in energy. The key intermediates are cyclopropyl gold(I) carbenes, which have been independently generated by retro-Buchner reaction from stereodefined 1a,7b-dihydro-1H-cyclopropa[a]naphthalenes.
