A Heptacene Analogue Entailing a Quinoidal Benzodi[7]annulene (7/6/7 Ring) Core with a Tunable Configuration and Multiple Redox Properties

Non-benzenoid acenes containing heptagons have received increasing attention. We herein report a heptacene analogue containing a quinoidal benzodi[7]annulene core. Derivatives of this new non-benzenoid acene were obtained through an efficient synthetic strategy involving an Aldol condensation and a Diels-Alder reaction as key steps. The configuration of this heptacene analogue can be modulated from a wavy to a curved one by just varying the substituents from a (triisopropylsilyl)ethynyl group to a 2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl (Trip) group. When mesityl (Mes) groups are linked to the heptagons, the resulting non-benzenoid acene displays polymorphism with a tunable configuration from a curved to a wavy one upon varying the crystallization conditions. In addition, this new non-benzenoid acene can be oxidized or reduced by NOSbF₆ or KC₈ to the respective radical cation or radical anion. Compared with the neutral acene, the radical anion shows a wavy configuration and the central hexagon becomes aromatic.

Doubling the Length of the Longest Pyrene-Pyrazinoquinoxaline Molecular Nanoribbons

Molecular nanoribbons are a class of atomically‐precise nanomaterials for a broad range of applications. An iterative approach that allows doubling the length of the longest pyrene‐pyrazinoquinoxaline molecular nanoribbons is described. The largest nanoribbon obtained through this approach—with a 60 linearly‐fused ring backbone (14.9 nm) and a 324‐atoms core (C₂₇₆N₄₈)—shows an extremely high molar absorptivity (values up to 1 198 074 M⁻¹ cm⁻¹) that also endows it with a high molar fluorescence brightness (8700 M⁻¹ cm⁻¹).

Depositing Molecular Graphene Nanoribbons on Ag(111) by Electrospray Controlled Ion Beam Deposition: Self-Assembly and On-Surface Transformations

The chemical processing of low‐dimensional carbon nanostructures is crucial for their integration in future devices. Here we apply a new methodology in atomically precise engineering by combining multistep solution synthesis of N‐doped molecular graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with mass‐selected ultra‐high vacuum electrospray controlled ion beam deposition on surfaces and real‐space visualisation by scanning tunnelling microscopy. We demonstrate how this method yields solely a controllable amount of single, otherwise unsublimable, GNRs of 2.9 nm length on a planar Ag(111) surface. This methodology allows for further processing by employing on‐surface synthesis protocols and exploiting the reactivity of the substrate. Following multiple chemical transformations, the GNRs provide reactive building blocks to form extended, metal–organic coordination polymers.

Benzo-Fused Perylene Oligomers with up to 13 Linearly Annulated Rings

The longer acenes with more than six linearly fused six-membered rings are still fascinating chemists and physicists because of their unique photophysical properties and their high potential for organic electronics applications. Unfortunately, with increasing size (seven and more rings) these compounds rapidly lose chemical stability. Besides kinetic and chemical stabilization approaches introducing either bulky or electron-withdrawing groups or both, such systems also have been stabilized by peri-annulation. Although strictly spoken, these peri-annulated compounds are no longer real acenes, they have fascinating properties as well. Herein, we describe the first synthesis of a new series of peri-annulated acenes with up to 13 linearly fused rings, which is unprecedented till date. Furthermore, this new series contains perylene units connected through benzene rings along their [b,k]edges, responsible for unique absorption and emission properties.

An Arylazopyrazole-Based N-Heterocyclic Carbene as a Photoswitch on Gold Surfaces: Light-Switchable Wettability, Work Function, and Conductance

A novel photoresponsive and fully conjugated N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) has been synthesized that combines the excellent photophysical properties of arylazopyrazoles (AAPs) with an NHC that acts as a robust surface anchor (AAP-BIMe). The formation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold was proven by ToF-SIMS and XPS, and the organic film displayed a very high stability at elevated temperatures. This stability was also reflected in a high desorption energy, which was determined by temperature-programmed SIMS measurements. E-/Z-AAP-BIMe@Au photoisomerization resulted in reversible alterations of the surface energy (i.e. wettability), the surface potential (i.e. work function), and the conductance (i.e. resistance). The effects could be explained by the difference in the dipole moment of the isomers. Furthermore, sequential application of a dummy ligand by microcontact printing and subsequent backfilling with AAP-BIMe allowed its patterning on gold. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of a photoswitchable NHC on a gold surface. These properties of AAP-BIMe@Au illustrate its suitability as a molecular switch for electronic devices.

Dodecatwistarene Imides with Zigzag-Twisted Conformation for Organic Electronics

1D nonplanar graphene nanoribbons generally have three possible conformers: helical, zigzag, and mixed conformations. Now, a kind of 1D nonplanar graphene nanoribbon, namely dodecatwistarene imides featuring twelve linearly fused benzene rings, was obtained by bottom-up synthesis of palladium-catalyzed Stille coupling and C-H activation. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that it displays a zigzag-twisted conformation caused by steric hindrance between imide groups and neighboring annulated benzene rings with the pendulum angle of 53°. This conformation is very stable and could not convert into other conformations even when heated up to 250 °C for 6 h. Despite of the highly twisted topology, organic field-effect transistor based on it exhibits electron mobility up to 1.5 cm²  V^-1  s^-1 after annealing.

5,7,12,14-Tetrafunctionalized 6,13-Diazapentacenes

The synthesis, property evaluation, and single crystal X-ray structures of four 5,7,12,14-tetrafunctionalized diazapentacenes are presented. The synthesis of these compounds either starts from tetrabromo-N,N-dihydrodiazapentacene or from a diazapentacene tetraketone. Pd-catalyzed coupling or addition of a lithium acetylide gave the precursors that furnish, after further redox reactions, the diazapentacenes as stable crystalline materials. The performance of the tetraphenyl-substituted compound as n-channel semiconductor was evaluated in organic field effect transistors.

Synthesis of Heterocyclic Core-Expanded Bis-Naphthalene Tetracarboxylic Diimides

A highly reactive bis-naphthalene tetracarboxylic diimide (bis-NDI) intermediate, TBrDNDI, was designed and synthesized for core-expanded NDIs. Based on this intermediate, we achieved 9- and 11-membered core-expanded bis-NDI derivatives. Through expanding the NDI core and introducing electron-donor or electron-acceptor groups, the frontier energy orbitals, optical and electrical properties of these bis-NDIs can be finely tuned to obtain air-stable ambipolar or n-type materials.

Dimesitylboryl-Decorated Azaarene: Synthesis, Enhanced Stability and Optoelectronic Property

The instability of large acenes and analogues usually limits their wide potentials in organic devices. Thus, effectively constructing large acenes or heteroacenes and examining their optoelectronic properties are of great interest. We herein describe the synthesis, optoelectronic behaviors and electroluminescent property of dimesitylboryl-decorated azaarene 5 and its homologue 7. The former emits strong green fluorescence in non-polar solvents but yellow light in polar solvents. The latter emits a blue light in various organic solvents. Moreover, their electrochemical behavior, photostability and electroluminescent property were further studied in a comparative manner, and the experimental findings suggest that the desired heteroarenes are appealing materials for fabricating electroluminescent devices.

Tuning the Conformation and Color of Conjugated Polyheterocyclic Skeletons by Installing ortho-Methyl Groups

ortho-Methyl effects are exploited to tune steric hindrance between side-chain N,N'-diaryls and polycyclic dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazine, and in turn control the conformations of N,N'-diphenyl-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazine (DPAC) and its ortho-methyl derivatives Mx-My (x=0, 1 or 2, y=1 or 2, x and y correlate with the number of methyl groups in the ortho-positiond of N,N'-diphenyl). The magnitude of steric hindrance increases as x and y increase, and the V-shaped dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazine skeleton is gradually tuned from a bent (DPAC) to planar (M2-M2) structure in the ground state. As a result, the relaxation of the excited-state structure of DPAC and its numerous analogues could be mimicked by model structures Mx-My, demonstrating for the first time the the conformation change from bent-to-planar and hence a large range of energy-gap tuning of polycyclic conjugated structures controlled by the steric hindrance.

n-Type Azaacenes Containing B←N Units

We disclose a novel strategy to design n-type acenes through the introduction of boron-nitrogen coordination bonds (B←N). We synthesized two azaacenes composed of two B←N units and six/eight linearly annelated rings. The B←N unit significantly perturbed the electronic structures of the azaacenes: Unique LUMOs delocalized over the entire acene skeletons and decreased aromaticity of the B←N-adjacent rings. Most importantly, these B←N-containing azaacenes exhibited low-lying LUMO energy levels and high electron affinities, thus leading to n-type character. The solution-processed organic field-effect transistor based on one such azaacene exhibited unipolar n-type characteristics with an electron mobility of 0.21 cm²  V^-1  s^-1 .
