Abstract
Excessive accumulation of nitrate in the environment will affect human health. To combat nitrate pollution, chemical, biological, and physical technologies have been developed recently. The researcher favors electrocatalytic reduction nitrate reaction (NO3 RR) because of the low post-treatment cost and simple treatment conditions. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) offer great activity, exceptional selectivity, and enhanced stability in the field of NO3 RR because of their high atomic usage and distinctive structural characteristics. Recently, efficient transition metal-based SACs (TM-SACs) have emerged as promising candidates for NO3 RR. However, the real active sites of TM-SACs applied to NO3 RR and the key factors controlling catalytic performance in the reaction process remain ambiguous. Further understanding of the catalytic mechanism of TM-SACs applied to NO3 RR is of practical significance for exploring the design of stable and efficient SACs. In this review, from experimental and theoretical studies, the reaction mechanism, rate-determining steps, and essential variables affecting activity and selectivity are examined. The performance of SACs in terms of NO3 RR, characterization, and synthesis is then discussed. In order to promote and comprehend NO3 RR on TM-SACs, the design of TM-SACs is finally highlighted, together with the current problems, their remedies, and the way forward.

Abstract
Precise regulation of the electronic states of catalytic sites through molecular engineering is highly desired to boost catalytic performance. Herein, a facile strategy was developed to synthesize efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts, based on mononuclear iron phthalocyanine supported on commercially available multi-walled carbon nanotubes that contain electron-donating functional groups (FePc/CNT-R, with "R" being -NH2 , -OH, or -COOH). These functional groups acted as axial ligands that coordinated to the Fe site, confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and synchrotron-radiation-based X-ray absorption fine structure. Experimental results showed that FePc/CNT-NH2 , with the most electron-donating -NH2 axial ligand, exhibited the highest ORR activity with a positive onset potential (Eonset =1.0 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode) and half-wave potential (E1/2 =0.92 V). This was better than the state-of-the-art Pt/C catalyst (Eonset =1.00 V and E1/2 =0.85 V) under the same conditions. Overall, the functionalized FePc/CNT-R assemblies showed enhanced ORR performance in comparison to the non-functionalized FePc/CNT assembly. The origin of this behavior was investigated using density functional theory calculations, which demonstrated that the coordination of electron-donating groups to FePc facilitated the adsorption and activation of oxygen. This study not only demonstrates a series of advanced ORR electrocatalysts, but also introduces a feasible strategy for the rational design of highly active electrocatalysts for other proton-coupled electron transfer reactions.

Abstract
Rechargeable aqueous zinc-air cells (ZACs) promise an extremely safe and high energy technology. However, they are still significantly limited by sluggish electrochemical kinetics and irreversibility originating from the parasitic reactions of the bifunctional catalysts and electrolytes. Here, we report the preferential in situ building of interfacial structures featuring the edge sites constituted by FeCo single/dual atoms with the integration of Co sites in the nitrogenized graphitic carbon frameworks (FeCo SAs@Co/N-GC) by electronic structure modulation approach. Compared to commercial Pt/C and RuO2, FeCo SAs@Co/N-GC reveals exceptional electrochemical performance, reversible redox kinetics, and durability toward oxygen reduction and evolution reactions under universal pH environments, i.e., alkaline, neutral, and acidic, due to synergistic effect at interfaces and preferred charge/mass transfer. The aqueous (alkaline, nonalkaline, and acidic electrolytes) ZACs constructed with a FeCo SAs@Co/N-GC cathode tolerate stable operations, have significant reversibility, and have the highest energy densities, outperforming those of noble metal counterparts and state-of-the-art ZACs in the ambient atmosphere. Additionally, flexible solid-state ZACs demonstrate excellent mechanical and electrochemical performances with a highest power density of 186 mW cm-2, specific capacity of 817 mAh gZn-1, energy density of 1017 Wh kgZn-1, and cycle life >680 cycles with extremely harsh operating conditions, which illustrates the great potential of triphasic catalyst for green energy storage technologies.

Abstract
Nitrogen-doped graphene could catalyze the electrochemical reduction and evolution of oxygen, but unfortunately suffers from sluggish catalytic kinetics. Herein, for the first time, we report an onion-like carbon coated Co, N-doped carbon (OLC/Co-N-C) material, which possesses multilayers of highly curved nanostructures that form mesoporous architectures. These unique nanospheres are produced when surfactant micelles are introduced to synthesis precursors. Owing to the combined electronic effect and nanostructuring effect, our OLC/Co-N-C materials exhibit high bifunctional oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER) activity, showing a promising application in rechargeable Zn-air batteries. Experimental results are rationalized by theoretical calculations, showing that the curvature of graphitic carbon plays a vital role in promoting activities of meta-carbon atoms near graphitic N and ortho/meta carbon atoms close to pyridinic N.

Abstract
The effect of the coordination sphere around metal centers on the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of transition metal macrocyclic complexes is still unclear. Here, the aromaticity/antiaromaticity effect of macrocycles on ORR activity was investigated based on TM norcorrole (TM=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni), TM porphycene, and TM porphyrin by first-principle calculations. It was found that the complexes with weaker aromatic macrocycles exhibited a stronger adsorption strength while the complexes with antiaromatic macrocycles showed further enhanced adsorption strengths. Further investigations indicated that the variation in the adsorption strengths of catalysts was attributed to the different redox activities of macrocycles with different aromaticities. Such difference in redox activities of macrocycles was reflected in the activities of metal centers via d-π conjugation, which acted as a bridge between π-electrons on macrocycles and active d-electrons on metal centers. This work deepens the understanding of the role of macrocycles in oxygen electroreduction.

Abstract
Synthesizing molecule@support hybrids is appealing to improve molecular electrocatalysis. We report herein metal-organic framework (MOF)-supported Co porphyrins for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with improved activity and selectivity. Co porphyrins can be grafted on MOF surfaces through ligand exchange. A variety of porphyrin@MOF hybrids were made using this method. Grafted Co porphyrins showed boosted ORR activity with large (>70 mV) anodic shift of the half-wave potential compared to ungrafted porphyrins. By using active MOFs for peroxide reduction, the number of electrons transferred per O2 increased from 2.65 to 3.70, showing significantly improved selectivity for the 4e ORR. It is demonstrated that H2 O2 generated from O2 reduction at Co porphyrins is further reduced at MOF surfaces, leading to improved 4e ORR. As a practical demonstration, these hybrids were used as air electrode catalysts in Zn-air batteries, which exhibited equal performance to that with Pt-based materials.

Abstract
Nature uses Fe porphyrin sites for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Synthetic Fe porphyrins have been extensively studied as ORR catalysts, but activity improvement is required. On the other hand, Fe porphyrins have been rarely shown to be efficient for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). We herein report an enzyme-inspired Fe porphyrin 1 as an efficient catalyst for both ORR and OER. Complex 1, which bears a tethered imidazole for Fe binding, beats imidazole-free analogue 2, with an anodic shift of ORR half-wave potential by 160 mV and a decrease of OER overpotential by 150 mV to get the benchmark current density at 10 mA cm-2 . Theoretical studies suggested that hydroxide attack to a formal FeV =O form the O-O bond. The axial imidazole can prevent the formation of trans HO-FeV =O, which is less effective to form O-O bond with hydroxide. As a practical demonstration, we assembled rechargeable Zn-air battery with 1, which shows equal performance to that with Pt/Ir-based materials.

Abstract
Tuning the local environment of nanomaterial-based catalysts has emerged as an effective approach to optimize their oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, yet the controlled electronic modulation around surface active sites remains a great challenge. Herein, directed electronic modulation of NiO nanoparticles was achieved by simple surface molecular modification with small organic molecules. By adjusting the electronic properties of modifying molecules, the local electronic structure was rationally tailored and a close electronic structure-activity relationship was discovered: the increasing electron-withdrawing modification readily decreased the electron density around surface Ni sites, accelerating the reaction kinetics and improving OER activity, and vice versa. Detailed investigation by operando Raman spectroelectrochemistry revealed that the electron-withdrawing modification facilitates the charge-transfer kinetics, stimulates the catalyst reconstruction, and promotes abundant high-valent γ-NiOOH reactive species generation. The NiO-C6 F5 catalyst, with the optimized electronic environment, exhibited superior performance towards water oxidation. This work provides a well-designed and effective approach for heterogeneous catalyst fabrication under the molecular level.

Abstract
The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anode severely limit hydrogen production at the cathode in water splitting systems. Although electrocatalytic systems based on cheap and earth-abundant copper catalysts have shown promise for water oxidation under basic conditions, only very few examples with high overpotential can be operated under acidic or neutral conditions, even though hydrogen evolution in the latter case is much easier. This work presents an efficient and robust Cu-based molecular catalyst, which self-assembles as a periodic film from its precursors under aqueous conditions on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode. This film catalyzes the OER under neutral conditions with impressively low overpotential. In controlled potential electrolysis, a stable catalytic current of 1.0 mA cm-2 can be achieved at only 2.0 V (vs. RHE) and no significant decrease in the catalytic current is observed even after prolonged bulk electrolysis. The catalyst displays first-order kinetics and a single site mechanism for water oxidation with a TOF (kcat ) of 0.6 s-1 . DFT calculations on of the periodic Cu(TCA)2 (HTCA=1-mesityl-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxylic acid) film reveal that TCA defects within the film create CuI active sites that provide a low overpotential route for OER, which involves CuI , CuII -OH, CuIII =O and CuII -OOH intermediates and is enabled at a potential of 1.54 V (vs. RHE), requiring an overpotential of 0.31 V. This corresponds well with an overpotential of approximately 0.29 V obtained experimentally for the grown catalytic film after 100 CV cycles at pH 6. However, to reach a higher current density of 1 mA cm-2 , an overpotential of 0.72 V is required.
