Abstract
A visible-light-induced metal-free trifluoromethylselenolation of aryl iodides and bromides with [Me4N][SeCF3] is described. The reaction was conducted at ambient temperature by successfully harnessing the light-sensitive SeCF3 reagent. Mechanistically, the EDA complexes between aryl halide and the -SeCF3 anion or the base might be formed and excited by light, which subsequently undergo intracomplex SET processes to generate aryl and •SeCF3 radicals as key intermediates, allowing a convenient and green access to various aryl trifluoromethyl selenoethers.

Abstract
Owing to the unknown correlation of a metal's ligand and its resulting preferred speciation in terms of oxidation state, geometry, and nuclearity, a rational design of multinuclear catalysts remains challenging. With the goal to accelerate the identification of suitable ligands that form trialkylphosphine-derived dihalogen-bridged Ni(I) dimers, we herein employed an assumption-based machine learning approach. The workflow offers guidance in ligand space for a desired speciation without (or only minimal) prior experimental data points. We experimentally verified the predictions and synthesized numerous novel Ni(I) dimers as well as explored their potential in catalysis. We demonstrate C-I selective arylations of polyhalogenated arenes bearing competing C-Br and C-Cl sites in under 5 min at room temperature using 0.2 mol % of the newly developed dimer, [Ni(I)(μ-Br)PAd2(n-Bu)]2, which is so far unmet with alternative dinuclear or mononuclear Ni or Pd catalysts.

Abstract
While vinyl cyclopropanes are valuable functional groups in drugs or natural products as well as established precursors to trigger a rich variety of synthetic transformations, their reactive nature can make their installation via direct catalytic approaches challenging. We herein present a modular access to (di)vinyl cyclopropanes under very mild conditions and full conservation of stereochemistry, allowing access to the cis or trans cyclopropane- as well as E or Z vinyl-stereochemical relationships. Our protocol relies on air-stable dinuclear PdI catalysis, which enables rapid (<30 min) and selective access to a diverse range of vinyl cyclopropane motifs at room temperature, even on gram scale.

Abstract
Monoligated palladium(0) species, L1Pd(0), have emerged as the most active catalytic species in the cross-coupling cycle. Today, there are methods available to generate the highly active but unstable L1Pd(0) catalysts from stable precatalysts. While the size of the ligand plays an important role in the formation of L1Pd(0) during in situ catalysis, the latter can be precisely generated from the precatalyst by various technologies. Computational, kinetic, and experimental studies indicate that all three steps in the catalytic cycle─oxidative addition, transmetalation, and reductive elimination─contain monoligated Pd. The synthesis of precatalysts, their mode of activation, application studies in model systems, as well as in industry are discussed. Ligand parametrization and AI based data science can potentially help predict the facile formation of L1Pd(0) species.

Abstract
Stereoselective total synthesis of the structurally intriguing polyketide natural product thailandamide lactone was accomplished, and done so using a convergent approach for the first time to the best of our knowledge. The key features of this synthesis included use of a Crimmins acetate aldol reaction, Evans methylation, Urpi acetal aldol reaction, Sharpless asymmetric epoxidation and subsequent γ-lactonization for the installation of six asymmetric centers and the use of the Negishi reaction, Julia-Kocienski olefination, cross metathesis, HWE olefination and intermolecular Heck coupling for construction of a variety of unsaturated linkages. Pd(i)-based Heck coupling was introduced, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, quite efficiently to couple the major eastern and sensitive western segments of the molecule. The antibacterial activity of thailandamide lactone was also evaluated.

Abstract
Trifluoromethylselenolation of arenes with [Me4N][SeCF3] in the presence of an oxidant through Pd-catalyzed C(sp2)-H activation under the assistance of a directing group is established for the first time. The reaction tolerates different directing groups and a variety of functional groups, enabling selective installation of a SeCF3 moiety onto the ortho positions of arenes. Mechanistic studies revealed that the CF3SeSeCF3 intermediate in situ generated from oxidation of [Me4N][SeCF3] might be the real SeCF3 reagent in the reaction.

Abstract
The trifluoromethylselenyl group (CF3Se) has become an emerging fluorinated moiety in synthetic chemistry due to its high Hansch lipophilicity parameter and strong electron-withdrawing effect. The trifluoromethylselenolation is hampered by limited synthetic methods and related reagents. Herein, we designed and synthesized the new electrophilic trifluoromethylselenolation reagents, trifluoromethyl selenoxides, which are easy to prepare and easy-to-handle and are not moisture or air sensitive. The selenoxides are successfully applied to metal-free C-H trifluoromethylselenolation of a series of (hetero)arenes.

Abstract
The first C-SCF3 /SeCF3 cross-coupling reactions using gold redox catalysis [(MeDalphos)AuCl], AgSCF3 or Me4 NSeCF3 , and organohalides as substrates are reported. The new methodology enables a one-stop shop synthesis of aryl/alkenyl/alkynyl trifluoromethylthio- and selenoethers with a broad substrate scope (>60 examples with up to 97 % isolated yield). The method is scalable, and its robustness is evidenced by the late-stage functionalization of various bioactive molecules, which makes this reaction an attractive alternative in the synthesis of trifluoromethylthio- and selenoethers for pharmaceutical and agrochemical research and development.

Abstract
Carbon-carbon coupling is one of the most powerful tools in the organic synthesis arsenal. Known methodologies primarily exploit monometallic Pd0/PdII catalytic mechanisms to give new C-C bonds. Bimetallic C-C coupling mechanisms that involve a PdI/PdII redox cycle, remain underexplored. Thus, a detailed mechnaistic understanding is imperative for the development of new bimetallic catalysts. Previously, a PdII-Me dimer (1) supported by L1, which has phosphine and 1-azaallyl donor groups, underwent reductive elimination to give ethane, a PdI dimer, a PdII monometallic complex, and Pd black. Herein, a comprehensive experimental and computational study of the reactivity of 1 is presented, which reveals that the versatile coordination chemistry of L1 promotes bimetallic C-C bond formation. The phosphine 1-azaallyl ligand adopts various bridging modes to maintain the bimetallic structure throughout the C-C bond forming mechanism, which involves intramolecular methyl transfer and 1,1-reductive elimination from one of the palladium atoms. The minor byproduct, methane, likely forms through a monometallic intermediate that is sensitive to solvent C-H activation. Overall, the capacity of L1 to adopt different coordination modes promotes the bimetallic C-C coupling channel through pathways that are unattainable with statically-coordinated ligands.

Abstract
A facile synthesis of bromodifluoromethylated selenides under metal-free conditions is described here. Commercially available Me3SiCF2Br and bench-stable selenosulfonates react smoothly to give a broad scope of alkyl- and aryl-substituted bromodifluoromethylated selenides in moderate to good yields via a difluorocarbene intermediate. This protocol features a short reaction time, the absence of toxic waste, good scalability, and successful late-stage modification of bioactive molecules. In addition, the title products can be easily converted to different fluorinated and 18F-labeled selenides.

Abstract
We report the Negishi coupling based synthesis of 1,2,3-tri(9-anthryl)benzene derivatives, containing three radially arranged anthracenes in a π-cluster. In the crystalline state of the unsubstituted derivative, intermolecular π-π and CH-π interactions between the anthracene units drive the formation of a two-dimensional packing structure. Owing to though-space π-conjugation between anthracene units, the substances have unique electronic properties. The excited state dynamic behavior occurring between the three radially arranged anthracene moieties, such as exciton localization/delocalization, was elucidated by means of transient absorption measurements and quantum chemical calculations. Interestingly, even though the three anthracenes are closely oriented with a ca. 3.0 Å distances between their C-9 positions, exciton localization on two anthracene units is energetically favorable because of the flexible nature of the radially arranged aromatic rings.

Abstract
Redox reactions that take place in enzymes and on the surfaces of heterogeneous catalysts often require active sites that contain multiple metals. By contrast, there are very few homogeneous catalysts with multinuclear active sites, and the field of organometallic chemistry continues to be dominated by the study of single metal systems. Multinuclear catalysts have the potential to display unique properties owing to their ability to cooperatively engage substrates. Furthermore, direct metal-to-metal covalent bonding can give rise to new electronic configurations that dramatically impact substrate binding and reactivity. In order to effectively capitalize on these features, it is necessary to consider strategies to avoid the dissociation of fragile metal-metal bonds in the course of a catalytic cycle. This Account describes one approach to accomplishing this goal using binucleating redox-active ligands. In 2006, Chirik showed that pyridine-diimines (PDI) have sufficiently low-lying π* levels that they can be redox-noninnocent in low-valent iron complexes. Extending this concept, we investigated a series of dinickel complexes supported by naphthyridine-diimine (NDI) ligands. These complexes can promote a broad range of two-electron redox processes in which the NDI ligand manages electron equivalents while the metals remain in a Ni(I)-Ni(I) state.Using (NDI)Ni2 catalysts, we have uncovered cases where having two metals in the active site addresses a problem in catalysis that had not been adequately solved using single-metal systems. For example, mononickel complexes are capable of stoichiometrically dimerizing aryl azides to form azoarenes but do not turn over due to strong product inhibition. By contrast, dinickel complexes are effective catalysts for this reaction and avoid this thermodynamic sink by binding to azoarenes in their higher-energy cis form.Dinickel complexes can also activate strong bonds through the cooperative action of both metals. Norbornadiene has a ring-strain energy that is similar to that of cyclopropane but is not prone to undergoing C-C oxidative addition with monometallic complexes. Using an (NDI)Ni2 complex, norbornadiene undergoes rapid ring opening by the oxidative addition of the vinyl and bridgehead carbons. An inspection of the resulting metallacycle reveals that it is stabilized through a network of secondary Ni-π interactions. This reactivity enabled the development of a catalytic carbonylative rearrangement to form fused bicyclic dienones. These vignettes and others described in this Account highlight some of the implications of metal-metal bonding in promoting a challenging step in a catalytic cycle or adjusting the thermodynamic landscape of key intermediates. Given that our studies have focused nearly exclusively on the (NDI)Ni2 system, we anticipate that many more such cases are left to be discovered as other transition-metal combinations and ligand classes are explored.

Abstract
An efficient method for oxidative trifluoromethylselenolation/N-acylation of indoles with excess [Me4N][SeCF3] in the presence of acyl peroxides and their derivatives is described. The reaction is easy to handle, proceeds smoothly at room temperature under metal-free conditions, and shows advantages such as good functional group tolerance, excellent regioselectivity, and compatibility of a number of substrates, producing 1-acyl and 3-trifluoromethylselanyl substituted indoles in good yields. Acyl peroxides and peroxycarboxylic acid behave as both oxidants and acyl sources in the transformation. This one-pot procedure provides a convenient access to a new class of indole derivatives, representing the first trifluoromethylselanyl bifunctionalization of indoles with the nucleophilic [Me4N][SeCF3] reagent.

Abstract
Cluster complexes have attracted interest for decades due to their promise of drawing analogies to metallic surfaces and metalloenzyme active sites, but only recently have chemists started to develop ligand scaffolds that are specifically designed to support multinuclear transition metal cores. Such ligands not only hold multiple metal centers in close proximity but also allow for fine-tuning of their electronic structures and surrounding steric environments. This Feature Article highlights ligand designs that allow for cooperative small molecule activation at cluster complexes, with a particular focus on complexes that contain metal-metal bonds. Two useful ligand-design elements have emerged from this work: a degree of geometric flexibility, which allows for novel small molecule activation modes, and the use of redox-active ligands to provide electronic flexibility to the cluster core. The authors have incorporated these factors into a unique class of dinucleating macrocycles (nPDI2). Redox-active fragments in nPDI2 mimic the weak-overlap covalent bonding that is characteristic of M-M interactions, and aliphatic linkers in the ligand backbone provide geometric flexibility, allowing for interconversion between a range of geometries as the dinuclear core responds to the requirements of various small molecule substrates. The union of these design elements appears to be a powerful combination for analogizing critical aspects of heterogeneous and metalloenzyme catalysts.

Abstract
We have described a copper-catalyzed radical 1,2-carbotrifluoromethylselenolation of alkenes using the readily available alkyl halides and (Me4N)SeCF3 salt. Critical to the success is the use of a proline-based N,N,P-ligand to enhance the reducing capability of copper for easy conversion of diverse alkyl halides to the corresponding radicals via a single-electron transfer process. The reaction features a broad substrate scope, including various mono-, di-, and trisubstituted alkenes with many functional groups.

Abstract
Dinuclear PdI complexes have found widespread applications as diverse catalysts for a multitude of transformations. Initially their ability to function as pre-catalysts for low-coordinated Pd0 species was harnessed in cross-coupling. Such PdI dimers are inherently labile and relatively sensitive to oxygen. In recent years, more stable dinuclear PdI -PdI frameworks, which feature bench-stability and robustness towards nucleophiles as well as recoverability in reactions, were explored and shown to trigger privileged reactivities via dinuclear catalysis. This includes the predictable and substrate-independent, selective C-C and C-heteroatom bond formations of poly(pseudo)halogenated arenes as well as couplings of arenes with relatively weak nucleophiles, which would not engage in Pd0 /PdII catalysis. This Minireview highlights the use of dinuclear PdI complexes as both pre-catalysts for the formation of highly active Pd0 and PdII -H species as well as direct dinuclear catalysts. Focus is set on the mechanistic intricacies, the speciation and the impacts on reactivity.

Abstract
This account highlights some of our recent work on photoinduced trifluoromethylselenolation reactions. This research program relies primarily on the design of a new key shelf-stable selenating reagent that can be involved in various radical processes In particular, we demonstrated that trifluoromethylselenolation of arenes, alkenes, alkynes as well as aliphatic organic building blocks can be readily achieved under visible-light irradiation. Mechanistic investigations based on 19 F NMR studies, EPR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and luminescence studies allowed us to shed the light on the different proposed mechanisms in the designed methodologies. The applicative potential of these strategies was further demonstrated through the synthesis of bioactive analogue containing SeCF3 motif.

Abstract
We report a new air-stable PdI dimer, [Pd(μ-I)(PCy2 t Bu)]2 , which triggers E-selective olefin migration to enamides and styrene derivatives in the presence of multiple functional groups and with complete tolerance of air. The same dimer also triggers extremely rapid C-C coupling (alkylation and arylation) at room temperature in a modular and triply selective fashion of aromatic C-Br, C-OTf/OFs, and C-Cl bonds in poly(pseudo)halogenated arenes, displaying superior activity over previous PdI dimer generations for substrates that bear substituents ortho to C-OTf.

Abstract
The first Markovnikov-type hydrotrifluoromethylselenolation of unactivated terminal alkenes with the readily accessible [Me4N][SeCF3] reagent and the superacid TfOH is reported. The reaction proceeded at room temperature under catalyst- and additive-free conditions to give the branched trifluoromethylselenolated products in good yields. This protocol is also applicable to the Markovnikov-type hydrotrifluoromethylthiolation of unactivated terminal alkenes using [Me4N][SCF3]/TfOH, but not to the hydrotrifluoromethoxylation with CsOCF3/TfOH under the same conditions. The successful hydrotrifluoromethylselenolation and hydrotrifluoromethylthiolation showed simplicity and high regioselectivity, taming the sensitive −XCF3 (X = Se, S) anions with TfOH, and offered a convenient method for the straightforward synthesis of branched trifluoromethyl selenoethers and thioethers from unactivated alkenes.

Abstract
While aryl germanes have recently found usage as coupling partners in powerful catalytic applications, the synthetic access to this promising functionality is currently limited. This report details the straightforward synthesis of functionalized aryl triethylgermanes via formal C-H functionalization. Building on the concept of directing-group-free and site-selective C-H functionalization of arenes to thianthrenium salt intermediates, we showcase their efficient couplings with triethylgermane (Et3Ge-H) at room temperature, which was enabled by the air- and moisture-stable Pd(I) dimer, [Pd(μ-I)(PtBu3)]2. The method tolerates numerous functional groups, including valuable (pseudo)halides.

Abstract
Contrary to the general belief that Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling at sites of severe steric hindrance are disfavored, we herein show that the oxidative addition to C-Br ortho to an adamantyl group is as favored as the corresponding adamantyl-free system due to attractive dispersion forces. This enabled the development of a fully selective arylation and alkylation of C-Br ortho to an adamantyl group, even if challenged with competing non-hindered C-OTf or C-Cl sites. The method makes use of an air-stable PdI dimer and enables straightforward access to diversely substituted therapeutically important adamantylarenes in 5-30 min.

Abstract
The prevalence of metalloenzymes with multinuclear metal complexes in their active sites inspires chemists' interest in the development of multinuclear catalysts. Studies in this area commonly focus on binuclear catalysts containing either metal-metal bond or electronically discrete, conformationally advantageous metal centres connected by multidentate ligands, while in many multinuclear metalloenzymes the metal centres are bridged through μ2-ligands without a metal-metal bond. We report herein a μ2-iodide-bridged binuclear palladium catalyst which accelerates the C-H nitrosation/annulation reaction and significantly enhances its yield compared with palladium acetate catalyst. The superior activity of this binuclear palladium catalyst is attributed to the trans effect-relay through the iodide bridge from one palladium sphere to the other palladium sphere, which facilitates dissociation of the stable six-membered chelating ring in palladium intermediate and accelerates the catalytic cycle. Such a trans effect-relay represents a bimetallic cooperation mode and may open an avenue to design and develop multinuclear catalysts.

Abstract
The reaction of nucleophilic tertiary amines with trifluoromethyl and pentafluoroethyl methyl ethers provides quaternary ammonium trifluoromethoxide (NR4OCF3) and pentafluoroethoxide (NR4OCF2CF3) salts, respectively, in good yields. The new trifluoromethoxide salts disclosed herein are uniquely stable for extended periods of time in both the solid state and in solution, which complements contemporary reagents. Here we describe the preparation of a range of NR4OCF3 salts, their long-term stability, and utility in substitution reactions.

Abstract
The development of innovative fluorination strategies is greatly dependent also on the availability, safety and practicability of available fluorinating reagents. We herein show a straightforward and quantitative strategy for the preparation of valuable AgOCF3 at room temperature and showcase its performance in trifluoromethoxylations or as reservoir for O=CF2 . This enabled the direct, practical and safe synthesis of valuable N-alkyl/aryl and N-CF3 carbamoyl fluorides from secondary amines and isothiocyanides, respectively. Our mechanistic data indicate that AgOCF3 does not liberate O=CF2 until it is activated by a nucleophilic co-reagent, reinforcing the stability of the salt under our new preparation strategy.

Abstract
In the contemporary practice of palladium catalysis, a molecular understanding of the role of vital additives used in such reactions continues to remain rather vague. Herein, we disclose an intriguing and a potentially general role for one of the most commonly used silver salt additives, discovered through rigorous computational investigations on four diverse Pd-catalyzed C-H bond activation reactions involving sp2 aryl C-H bonds. The catalytic pathways of different reactions such as phosphorylation, arylation, alkynylation, and oxidative cycloaddition are analyzed, with and without the explicit inclusion of the silver additive in the respective transition states and intermediates. Our results indicate that the pivotal role of silver salts is likely to manifest in the form of a Pd-Ag heterobimetallic species that facilitates intermetallic electronic communication. The Pd-Ag interaction is found to provide a consistently lower energetic span as compared to an analogous pathway devoid of such interaction. Identification of a lower energy pathway as well as enhanced catalytic efficiency due to Pd-Ag interaction could have broad practical implications in the mechanism of transition metal catalysis and the current perceptions on the same.
