Sensing Uranyl(VI) Ions by Coordination and Energy Transfer to a Luminescent Europium(III) Complex

Advanced "turn-on" colorimetric uranium platform based on the enhanced nanozyme activity of a donor-acceptor structured covalent organic framework

BACKGROUND

The increasing uranium containing wastes generated during uranium mining and finishing pose a huge threat to the environment and human health, and thus robust strategies for on-site monitoring of uranium pollutant are of great significance for environmental protection around uranium tailings.

RESULTS

Herein, a facile "turn-on" colorimetric platform that can achieve uranium detection by spectrometry and naked eyes was developed based on the uranium-enhanced nanozyme activity of covalent organic framework (JUC-505). Thanks to the extended π-conjugated skeleton and donor-acceptor (D-A) structure, JUC-505 exhibited superior photo-activated nanozyme activity, which would be prohibited when the cyano group in JUC-505 skeleton was transformed to the amidoxime group. Further results elucidated that the coordination of uranium with amidoxime groups led to the electron transfer between uranium and the JUC-505-AO skeleton, and thus significantly restored the nanozymatic activity of JUC-505-AO with the subsequent remarkable color changes. Moreover, the uranium concentrations in uranium tailing wastewater detected by the present "turn-on" colorimetric method were well agreed with those by ICP-MS, demonstrating a high accuracy of the present method in real samples.

SIGNIFICANCE

The D-A structured JUC-505 with superior photocatalytic property and nanozymatic activity was applied to facilitate colorimetric detection of uranium, which displays the advantages of low detection limit, excellent selectivity, fast response and simple operation for uranium detection in real samples, and shows a great potential in on-site monitoring of uranium pollutant around uranium tailings as well as nuclear power plant.

Europium(III) Functionalized Covalent Organic Framework as Sensitive and Selective Fluorescent Switch for Detection of Uranium

Uranium poses severe health risks due to its radioactivity and chemical toxicity if released into the environment. Therefore, there is an urgent demand to develop sensing materials in situ monitoring of uranium with high sensitivity and stability. In this work, a fluorescent Eu3+-TFPB-Bpy is synthesized by grafting Eu3+ cation onto TFPB-Bpy covalent organic framework (COF) synthesized through Schiff base condensation of monomers 1,3,5-tris(4-formylphenyl)benzene (TFPB) and 5,5'-diamino-2,2'-bipyridine (Bpy). The fluorescence of Eu3+-TFPB-Bpy is enhanced compared with that of TFPB-Bpy, which is originated from the intramolecular rotations of building blocks limited by the bipyridine units of TFPB-Bpy coordinated with Eu3+. More significantly, Eu3+-TFPB-Bpy is a highly efficient probe for sensing UO22+ in aqueous solution with the luminescence intensity efficiently amplified by complexation of UO22+ with Eu3+. The turn-on sensing capability was derived from the resonance energy transfer occurring from UO22+ to the Eu3+-TFPB-Bpy. The developed probe displayed desirable linear range from 5 nM to 5 μM with good selectivity and rapid response time (2 s) for UO22+ in mining wastewater. This strategy provides a vivid illustration for designing luminescence lanthanide COF hybrid materials with applications in environmental monitoring.

One particle three targets: Phosphate anion-modified magnetic mesoporous silica with enhanced fluorescence for sensitive detection, efficient adsorption, and repeated removal of uranium (VI) ions

An ideal adsorbent material that combines the multiple capabilities of sensitive detection, efficient adsorption, and repeatable removal of uranium (U) from the environment remains a serious challenge. Herin, a general method was developed for synthesizing a series of phosphate anions (such as: PO43-, P2O74-, P3O105- and P6O186-) modified magnetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Fe3O4 @mSiO2-Zn2+ NPs). The mesoporous surfaces and abundant phosphate groups provide potential, powerful uranium-binding sites for capturing U(VI) ions. Especially, the optimum adsorption capacity of Fe3O4 @mSiO2-Zn2+/P3O105- NPs was as high as 885.90 mg·g-1 (298 K), which was higher than that of unmodified or other phosphate anions-modified Fe3O4 @mSiO2-Zn2+ NPs. Meanwhile, P3O105--binding sites and mesoporous surfaces also strongly restrict U(VI) ions' fluorescence vibrational inactivation, the adsorption results in rapid green fluorescence enhancement (within 180 s), and an ultra-low detection limit (4.5 nmol·L-1), which is well below the standard in drinking water of the World Health Organization (WHO). Furthermore, even after 5 cycles, the adsorbent still maintained their original adsorption capacity of 80.21% and displayed excellent selectivity for detecting and removing U(VI) from seawater. Based on these results, the Fe3O4 @mSiO2-Zn2+/P3O105- NPs seem to be a suitable multifunctional adsorbent for the detection, adsorption, and removal of U(VI) from environment.

On-Site Ratiometric Analysis of UO22+ with High Selectivity

Uranyl ions (UO22+) are recognized as important indicators for monitoring sudden nuclear accidents. However, the interferences coexisting in the complicated environmental matrices impart serious constraints on the reliability of current on-site monitoring methods. Herein, a novel ratiometric method for the highly sensitive and selective detection of UO22+ is reported based on a [Eu(diaminoterephthalic acid)] (Eu-DATP) metal-organic framework. Benefiting from the unique chemical structure of Eu-DATP, energy transfer from DATP to UO22+ was enabled, resulting in the up-regulated fluorescence of UO22+ and the simultaneous down-regulated fluorescence of Eu3+. The limit of detection reached as low as 2.7 nM, which was almost 2 orders of magnitude below the restricted limit in drinking water set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (130 nM). The Eu-DATP probe showed excellent specificity to UO22+ over numerous interfering species, as the intrinsic emissions of UO22+ were triggered. This unprecedentedly high selectivity is especially beneficial for monitoring UO22+ in complicated environmental matrices with no need for tedious sample pretreatment, such as filtration and digestion. Then, by facilely equipping a Eu-DATP-based sampler on a drone, remotely controlled sampling and on-site analysis in real water samples were realized. The concentrations of UO22+ were determined to be from 16.5 to 23.5 nM in the river water of the Guangzhou downtown area, which was consistent with the results determined by the gold-standard inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. This study presents a reliable and convenient method for the on-site analysis of UO22+.

Aggregation enhanced FRET: A simple but efficient strategy for the ratiometric detection of uranyl ion

Uranium is one of the most important radionuclides but could also cause potential health risks to human beings due to its radioactive and chemical toxicity. It is an urgent task to develop a simple but efficient sensing platform for UO₂²⁺, the main existing form of uranium in environment. Herein, a rhodamine-functionalized carbon dots (o-CDs-Rho) was synthesized and applied for UO₂²⁺ sensing through a simple but novel aggregation-enhanced FRET strategy. The weak FRET efficiency (16.2%) of o-CDs-Rho in dispersed solution is significantly enhanced (>77.2%) after UO₂²⁺ triggered aggregation due to the increased number of rhodamine acceptors around each CDs from dispersed 80 to aggregated 2800. This is the first ratiometric fluorescence sensor with an inverse change of fluorescence intensity at dual emission wavelengths under single-wavelength excitation for UO₂²⁺. Under optimized experiment conditions, o-CDs-Rho nanosensor shows a low detection limit of 53 nM and excellent selectivity. Meanwhile, the as-prepared nanosensor also shows high reliability and stability. These excellent properties make it successful in detecting uranium content in real samples.

Numerical Recognition System and Ultrasensitive Fluorescence Sensing Platform for Al3+ and UO22+ Based on Ln (III)-Functionalized MOF-808 via Thiodiglycolic Acid Intermediates

Continuous accumulation of Al³⁺ in the human body and unintended leakage of UO₂²⁺ have posed a great threat to human health and the global environment; thus searching an efficient probe for the detection of Al³⁺ and UO₂²⁺ is of great importance. Herein, we designed and synthesized two hydrolytically stable Eu³⁺- and Tb³⁺-functionalized MOF materials Eu@MOF-808-TDA and Tb@MOF-808-TDA via thiodiglycolic acid (TDA) intermediates by the postsynthetic modification method. Among them, Tb@MOF-808-TDA was applied to construct numerical recognition systems of multiples of three and four by the combination of fluorescent signals, hierarchical cluster analysis, and logical gates. In addition, Tb@MOF-808-TDA exhibits good selectivity and sensitivity for the detection of Al³⁺ and UO₂²⁺. The detection limit is calculated to be 0.085 ppm for Al³⁺ and 0.082 ppm for UO₂²⁺ in aqueous solutions, which is lower than or close to that of latest reported Ln-MOFs. Moreover, the probe shows excellent hydrolytic stability and luminescence stability in the pH range of 4-11, further providing solid evidence for the practical application of Tb@MOF-808-TDA. More importantly, a mixed matrix hydrogel PVA-Tb@MOF-808-TDA was prepared to achieve the visual detection of Al³⁺, which broadens the potential in real-world sensing applications.

Simultaneous detection and separation of uranium based on a fluorescent amidoxime-functionalized covalent organic polymer

To ensure the long-term sustainable development of nuclear energy as well as the prevention and control of uranium pollution, new materials that can simultaneously detect and separate uranium are still urgently needed. Herein, a new fluorescent covalent organic polymer (COP), namely HT-COP-AO, was synthesized andemployed as both the fluorescent probe and absorbent for simultaneous uranium detection and separationconsidering its excellent fluorescence property and strong uranium coordination ability. The results showed that the fluorescence of HT-COP-AO was quickly quenched by uranium within 2 min, and the limit of detection was 0.23 µM (3σ/K). Further studies implied that uranium was coordinated with the amidoxime groups of HT-COP-AO through U-N and O = U = O bonds, which resulted in electron transfer from uranium to HT-COP-AO and quenching the fluorescence of HT-COP-AO consequently. Meanwhile, HT-COP-AO exhibited excellent absorption ability towards uranium, and the maximum absorption capacity (q_max = 401.3 mg/g) was higher than most reported amidoxime modified materials. The HT-COP-AO also showed high selectivity for both uranium detection and separation which makes it a great promising for uranium monitoring in real water samples.

Enhanced luminescence of tris(carboxylato)uranyl(VI) complexes and energy transfer to Eu(III): a combined spectroscopic and theoretical investigation

Complex formation between uranyl and carboxylate ligands (benzoate, nicotinate and isonicotinate) has been studied extensively by absorption and luminescence spectroscopy in acetonitrile medium. Experimental data had indicated the existence of stable and enhanced luminescent tris(carboxylato) uranyl(VI) complexes i.e. [UO₂(L)₃]^- with D_3h symmetry. The high luminescence of these complexes was due to the sensitization of the O_yl → U ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT) emission by extremely intense equatorial (carboxylate ligands) LMCT bands. The variation in the experimentally observed parameters such as intensity of equatorial LMCT bands, luminescence lifetimes, quantum yields and structural parameters among tris(carboxylato) uranyl(VI) complexes are affirmed by quantum chemical calculations using density functional theory and the computational results are found to be in good agreement with experimental findings. Interestingly, in a very dilute mixture of [UO₂(L)₃]^- and Eu(III), energy transfer from uranyl to Eu(III) is observed and it leads to the detection of europium at trace levels. This is an intriguing observation as none of the previous studies have reported such a low level of detection limit of Eu(III) by means of energy transfer from any metal.

Hydrolytically Stable Zr-Based Metal-Organic Framework as a Highly Sensitive and Selective Luminescent Sensor of Radionuclides

Effective detections of radionuclides including uranium and its predominant fission products, for example, iodine, are highly desired owing to their radiotoxicity and potential threat to human health. However, traditional analytical techniques of radionuclides are instrument-demanding, and chemosensors targeted for sensitization of radionuclides remain limited. In this regard, we report a sensitive and selective sensor of UO₂²⁺ and I^- based on the unique quenching behavior of a luminescent Zr-based metal-organic framework, Zr₆O₄(OH)₄(OH)₆(H₂O)₆(TCPE)_1.5·(H₂O)₂₄(C₃H₇NO)₉ (Zr-TCPE). Immobilization of the luminescent tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)ethylene (TCPE^4-) linkers by Zr₆ nodes enhances the photoluminescence quantum yield of Zr-TCPE, which facilitates the effective sensing of radionuclides in a "turn-off" manner. Moreover, Zr-TCPE can sensitively and selectively recognize UO₂²⁺ and I^- ions with the lowest limits of detection of 0.67 and 0.87 μg/kg, respectively, of which the former one is much lower than the permissible value (30 μg/L) defined by the U.S. EPA. In addition, Zr-TCPE features excellent hydrolytic stability and can withstand pH conditions ranging from 3 to 11. To facilitate real-world applications, we have further fabricated polyvinylidene fluoride-integrating Zr-TCPE as luminescence-based sensor membranes for on-site sensing of UO₂²⁺ and I^-.

Fluorogenic Detection of Sulfite in Water by Using Copper(II) Azacyclam Complexes

Copper(II) azacyclam complexes (azacyclam = 1,3,5,8,12-pentaazacyclotetradecane) containing naphthyl or dansyl subunits can be prepared by template synthesis involving proper sulfonamide derivatives as locking fragments. The macrocyclic complexes are very poorly emissive due to the fluorescence-quenching behavior displayed by Cu²⁺ ions. However, the fluorescence can be recovered as a result of the decomposition of the complexes, which induces the release of free light-emitting subunits to the solution. This reaction takes place very slowly in neutral water but its rate is increased by the presence of sulfite. Therefore, [Cu(azacyclam)]²⁺ derivatives have been investigated as simple chemical probes for the fluorogenic detection of sulfite both on laboratory and real samples. Preliminary tests performed on samples of white wine provided sulfite concentration values that are in agreement with those obtained by a standard analytical method.

Preparation of a gold@europium-based coordination polymer nanocomposite with excellent photothermal properties and its potential for four-mode imaging

A nanocomposite was synthesized by replacing the toxic CTAB on the surface of GNRs with a europium-based hyaluronic acid coordination polymer. The nanocomposite exhibits excellent photothermal performance and also has potential for four-mode imaging.

Ultrasensitive detection of UO2 2+ based on dopamine-functionalized MoOx quantum dots

Uranium is an important nuclear fuel and the risk of human exposure to uranium increases as increasing amounts of uranium-containing waste enter the environment due to the rapid growth of nuclear power. Therefore, rapid, sensitive, and portable uranium detection is a promising approach to effectively control and monitor uranium contamination. To achieve this goal, abundant oxygen- and nitrogen-containing groups were introduced to molybdenum oxide quantum dot (MoO_x QDs) surfaces with dopamine (DA) modification. Due to the excellent coordination ability of oxygen- and nitrogen-containing groups with uranium, the obtained DA-functionalized MoO_x QDs (DA-MoOx QDs) showed a strong binding affinity for uranium and sensitivity was increased nearly 1000-fold compared with MoO_x QDs alone. The limit of detection was 3.85 nM, which is higher than most of the reported nanomaterials. Moreover, the DA-MoOx QD-based method showed high selectivity and uranium could be clearly detected under masking with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid even when the concentration of other metal ions was 100-fold higher than that of uranium, showing a very promising method for uranium contamination control and monitoring.

Temperature-robust and ratiometric G-quadruplex proximate DNAzyme assay for robustly monitoring of uranium pollution and its microbial biosorbents screening

Uranium pollution in environment and food chain is a serious threat to public security and human health. Herein, we proposed a temperature-robust, ratiometric, and label-free bioassay based on G-quadruplex proximate DNAzyme (G4DNAzyme), accommodating us to precisely monitor uranium pollution and biosorption. The proximity of split G-quadruplex probes was proposed to sense UO₂²⁺-activated DNAzyme activity, thus eliminating the use of chemically labeled nucleic acid probes. And the simultaneous monitoring of G-quadruplex and double-stranded structures of DNAzyme probes contributed to a ratiometric and robust detection of UO₂²⁺. Particularly, the separation of enzymatic digestion and fluorescence monitoring endued a robust and highly responsive detection of UO₂²⁺ upon the temperature of enzymatic digestion process ranged from 18° to 41 °C. Consequently, G4DNAzyme assay allowed a robust, label-free and ratiometric quantification of uranium. We demonstrated the feasibility of G4DNAzyme assay for estimating uranium pollution in water and aquatic product samples. Ultimately, G4DNAzyme assay was adopted to serve as the platform to screen bacterial species and conditions for uranium biosorption, promising its roles in uranium associated biosafety control.

Exploiting Supramolecular Dynamics in Metal-Phenolic Networks to Generate Metal-Oxide and Metal-Carbon Networks

Supramolecular complexation is a powerful strategy for engineering materials in bulk and at interfaces. Metal-phenolic networks (MPNs), which are assembled through supramolecular complexes, have emerged as suitable candidates for surface and particle engineering owing to their diverse properties. Herein, we examine the supramolecular dynamics of MPNs during thermal transformation processes. Changes in the local supramolecular network including enlarged pores, ordered aromatic packing, and metal relocation arise from thermal treatment in air or an inert atmosphere, enabling the engineering of metal-oxide networks (MONs) and metal-carbon networks, respectively. Furthermore, by integrating photo-responsive motifs (i.e., TiO₂ ) and silanization, the MONs are endowed with reversible superhydrophobic (>150°) and superhydrophilic (≈0°) properties. By highlighting the thermodynamics of MPNs and their transformation into diverse materials, this work offers a versatile pathway for advanced materials engineering.

Combining the Best of Two Chelating Titans: A Hydroxypyridinone-Decorated Macrocyclic Ligand for Efficient and Concomitant Complexation and Sensitized Luminescence of f-Elements

An ideal chelator for f-elements features rapid kinetics of complexation, high thermodynamic stability, and slow kinetics of dissociation. Here we present the facile synthesis of a macrocyclic ligand bearing four 1-hydroxy-2-pyridinone units linked to a cyclen scaffold that rapidly forms thermodynamically stable complexes with lanthanides (Sm³⁺ , Eu³⁺ , Tb³⁺ , Dy³⁺ ) and a representative late actinide (Cm³⁺ ) in aqueous media and concurrently sensitizes them. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy revealed an increase in the Ln/An-O bond lengths following the trend Cm>Eu>Tb and EXAFS data were compatible with time-resolved luminescence studies, which indicated one to two water molecules in the inner metal coordination sphere of Eu(III) and two water molecules for the Cm(III) complex. Spectrofluorimetric ligand competition titrations against DTPA confirmed the high thermodynamic stability of DOTHOPO complexes, with pM values between 19.9(1) and 21.9(2).

Tuning of the Network Dimensionality and Photoluminescent Properties in Homo- and Heteroleptic Lanthanide Coordination Polymers

Targeted synthesis, through a heteroleptic methodology, has resulted in three types of lanthanide (Ln) coordination polymers (CPs) with tailored dimensionality, tunable photoluminescent colors, and distinct luminescence quenching upon UV and X-ray irradiation. The homoleptic Ln(tpbz)(NO₃)₂ [CP-1; tpbz = 4-(2,2':6',2″-terpyridin-4'-yl)benzoate] is assembled from Ln cations and bridging tpbz ligands, accompanied by the decoration of NO₃^- anions, forming a one-dimensional (1D) chain structure. The presence of ancillary dicarboxylate linkers, 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (bdc) and 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylate (tdc), promotes additional bridging between 1D chains to form a two-dimensional layer and a three-dimensional framework for Ln(tpbz)(bdc) (CP-2) and Ln(tpbz)(tdc) (CP-3), respectively. The multicolor and luminescence properties of the obtained CPs were investigated, displaying typical red Eu^III-based and green Tb^III-based emissions. The Sm^III-bearing CP-1-CP-3, however, exhibit diverse ratiometric Ln^III- and ligand-based emissions, with the photoluminescent colors varying from pink to orange to cyan. Notably, the Tb^III-containing CP-1-CP-3 display distinct luminescence quenching upon continuous exposure to UV and X-ray irradiation. To our best knowledge, CP-2-Tb represents one of the most sensitive UV dosage probes (3.2 × 10^-7 J) among all CPs.

Structural and Thermodynamics Studies on Polyaminophosphonate Ligands for Uranyl Decorporation

The development of actinide decorporation agents with high complexation affinity, high tissue specificity, and low biological toxicity is of vital importance for the sustained and healthy development of nuclear energy. After accidental actinide intake, sequestration by chelation therapy to reduce acute damage is considered as the most effective method. In this work, a series of bis- and tetra-phosphonated pyridine ligands have been designed, synthesized, and characterized for uranyl (UO₂²⁺) decorporation. Owing to the absorption of the ligand and the luminescence of the uranyl ion, UV-vis spectroscopy and time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) were used to probe in situ complexation and structure variation of the complexes formed by the ligands with uranyl. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy on uranyl-ligand complexes revealed the coordination geometry around the uranyl center at pH 3 and 7.4. High affinity constants (log K ∼17) toward the uranyl ion were determined by displacement titration. A preliminary in vitro chelation study proves that bis-phosphonated pyridine ligands can remove uranium from calmodulin (CaM) at a low dose and in the short term, which supports further uranyl decorporation applications of these ligands.

Structural, spectroscopic, and computational evaluations of cation–cation and halogen bonding interactions in heterometallic uranyl hybrid materials

A route for systematically accessing the oxo atoms of the linear uranyl (UO₂²⁺) cation via cation–cation and halogen bonding interactions is detailed, and interaction strengths are probed via structural, vibrational, and computational means.

Trimeric uranyl(vi)-citrate forms Na+, Ca2+, and La3+ sandwich complexes in aqueous solution

M. Basile, et al., Chem. Commun., 2015, 51, 5306-5309, showed that a sodium ion is sandwiched by uranyl(vi) oxygen atoms of two 3 : 3 uranyl(vi)-citrate complex molecules in single-crystals. By means of NMR spectroscopy supported by DFT calculations we provide unambiguous evidence for this complex to persist in aqueous solution above a critical concentration of 3 mM uranyl citrate. Unprecedented Ca²⁺ and La³⁺ coordination by a bis-(η³-uranyl(vi)-oxo) motif advances the understanding of uranium's aqueous chemistry. As determined from ¹⁷O NMR, Ca²⁺ and more distinctly La³⁺ cause strong O[double bond, length as m-dash]U[double bond, length as m-dash]O polarization, which opens up new ways for uranyl(vi)-oxygen activation and functionalization.

Luminescence Tunable Europium and Samarium Complexes: Reversible On/Off Switching and White-Light Emission

Single-molecule functional materials with luminescence tunable by external stimuli are of increasing interest due to their application in sensors, display devices, biomarkers, and switches. Herein, new europium and samarium complexes with ligands having triphenylamine (TPA) groups as the redox center and 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) as the coordinating groups and diketonate (tta) as the second ligand have been constructed. The complexes show white-light emission in selected solvents for proper mixtures of the emission from Ln³⁺ ions and the ligands. Meanwhile, they exhibit reversible luminescence switching on/off properties by controlling the external potential owing to intramolecular energy transfer from the Ln³⁺ ions to the electrochemically generated radical cation of TPA^•+. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations have been performed to study the electronic spectra. The proposed intramolecular energy transfer processes have been verified by density functional theory (DFT) studies.

Sensitive and selective assay of uranyl based on the aggregation induced fluorescent quenching of protamine capped gold nanoclusters

The protamine capped gold nanoclusters (AuNCs@PRT) were synthesized by an one-pot approach, and utilized as a nanoprobe for highly sensitive and selective assay of U(VI) ions. The method is based on the aggregation induced fluorescent quenching of AuNCs@PRT by U(VI) ions. Under optimum conditions, the decrease of fluorescence intensity displayed a good linear correlation with the concentration of U(VI) ions ranging from 20.4 nM to 9.74 μM, with a detection limit of 6.1 nM. The relative standard deviations were 3.86%, 1.41% and 1.71% via 11 detections at concentrations of 40 nM, 0.40 μM and 4.0 μM of U(VI), respectively. The quenching mechanism was demonstrated to be due to the binding of U(VI) towards PRT to cause the aggregation of AuNCs@PRT rather than metal-metal interaction. The results suggest the potential application of this approach for monitoring the level of U(VI) in environmental samples.

Terpyridine-based complex nanofibers with Eu3+ as a highly selective chemical probes for UO22

Uranyl is a radioactive, toxic pollutant commonly found in the waste remaining after nuclear fuel reprocessing, and it poses several types of risks to human health; therefore, developing absorbents and chemical probes for this compound is crucial to overcoming these issues. This study examined the sensing abilities of terpyridine-appended benzenetricarboxyamide (T-BTA) as a chromogenic probe for detecting uranyl ions (UO₂²⁺). The complex with Eu³⁺ (1-Eu) spontaneously formed nanostructured fibers in H₂O owing to the triamide groups of T-BTA, which induced intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions. The strong blue emission of these nanofibers in H₂O was quenched upon adding UO₂²⁺ but not upon adding any other metal ion. This high selectivity was probably because of the interactions between the nitrigen atoms of the terpyridine moieties of 1 and UO₂²⁺. Furthermore, the 1-Eu nanofibers assumed spherical morphologies when UO₂²⁺ was added. To develop a convenient UO₂²⁺ sensor, an electrospun film incorporating 1-Eu (ESF-1-Eu) was manufactured, and it exhibited high selectivity for UO₂²⁺ over a variety of rival metal ions. The plot for luminescence change of ESF-1-Eu vs UO₂²⁺ concentrations in seawater samples showed a good linearty. Thus, the ESF-1-Eu shows potential as a useful sensor for detecting and removing UO₂²⁺ in H₂O.

Three-dimensional graphene/titanium dioxide composite for enhanced U(VI) capture: Insights from batch experiments, XPS spectroscopy and DFT calculation

Efficient containment and capture of uranium (U(VI)) from aqueous solution is an essential component to ensure socially and environmentally sustainable development. Herein, the three-dimensional graphene/titanium dioxide composite (3D GA/TiO₂) was synthesized and applied as an effective adsorbent to remove U(VI) from wastewater as a function of contact time, temperature, pH and ion strength. The 3D GA/TiO₂ material was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The batch experiments results indicated that the adsorption of U(VI) on materials were fitted with the pseudo-second order kinetics and Langmuir models. More specifically, 3D GA/TiO₂ (441.3 mg/g) was observed to outperform the GO (280.0 mg/g), rGO (140.9 mg/g) and TiO₂ (98.5 mg/g) at pH 5.0, which was attributable to the excellent cooperative effects. Furthermore, XPS analyses and DFT calculations confirmed the formation of surface complexes between oxygen-containing group and U(VI) with the U-O bonds length of 2.348 Å (U-O1) and 2.638 Å (U-O2). Meanwhile, the adsorption energy was calculated to be 1.60 eV, which showed a very strong chemisorption during the interaction process. It is believed that the 3D GA/TiO₂ revealed good removal performance for uranyl ions, which showed a great potential application to control the nuclear industrial pollution.

Spectroscopic Study of the Salicyladazine Derivative⁻UO22+ Complex and Its Immobilization to Mesoporosorous Silica

Uranyl ion, the most soluble toxic uranium species, is recognized as an important index for monitoring nuclear wastewater quality. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) prescribed 30 ppb as the allowable concentration of uranyl ion in drinking water. This paper reports on a nanohybrid material that can detect uranyl ions spectroscopically and act as a uranyl ion absorbent in an aqueous system. Compound 1, possessing a salicyladazine core and four acetic acid groups, was synthesized and the spectroscopic properties of its UO₂²⁺ complex were studied. Compound 1 had a strong blue emission when irradiated with UV light in the absence of UO₂²⁺ that was quenched in the presence of UO₂²⁺. According to the Job's plot, Compound 1 formed a 1:2 complex with UO₂²⁺. When immobilized onto mesoporous silica, a small dose (0.3 wt %) of this hybrid material could remove 96% of UO₂²⁺ from 1 mL of a 100-ppb UO₂²⁺ aqueous solution.

A quencher-free DNAzyme beacon for fluorescently sensing uranyl ions via embedding 2-aminopurine

DNAzyme-based fluorescent probes have provided valuable protocols for detecting uranium, one of the most common radioactive contaminants in the environment, with ultra-high selectivity and sensitivity. Designing novel DNAzyme beacons to update the mode of fluorescence reporting and/or quenching will continuously enhance "turn-on" sensing performance as well as promote actual application of the biological probes. In this work, we developed a novel quencher-free DNAzyme beacon by embedding fluorescent 2-aminopurine for rapid detection of uranyl ion. 2-aminopurine is able to substitute adenine and keep strong fluorescence in single-stranded DNA whereas being quenched in the hybridized double-stranded DNA by the base-stacking interaction. The combination of such trait of 2-aminopurine and cleavage reaction of DNAzyme in the presence of target co-factors possesses two main advantages for ion sensing: simplicity for avoidance of extra quencher groups and high performance because of superiority of DNAzyme essence. The experimental conditions including embedding site, pH and salt concentration of buffer solutions, and the amount ratio of enzyme strand to substrate strand used to form DNAzymes were systematically optimized to inspire the highest performance of the biological beacon. Thus, a detection limit of 9.6 nM, a wide linear range from 5 nM to 400 nM (R² = 0.997), and selectivity of more than 400 000-fold over other metal ions were achieved by the novel DNAzyme probes. The highly sensitive, selective and quencher-free DNAzyme probes accommodated a simple and cost-efficient alternative to current fluorescent counterparts, holding a great potential for further application in practical ion assay.

Optimizing radionuclide sequestration in anion nanotraps with record pertechnetate sorption

The elimination of specific contaminants from competitors poses a significant challenge. Rather than relying on a single direct interaction, the cooperation of multiple functionalities is an emerging strategy for adsorbents design to achieve the required affinity. Here, we describe that the interaction with the target species can be altered by modifying the local environment of the direct contact site, as demonstrated by manipulating the affinity of pyridinium-based anion nanotraps toward pertechnetate. Systematic control of the substituent effect allows the resulting anion nanotraps to combine multiple features, overcoming the long-term challenge of TcO₄^- segregation under extreme conditions of super acidity and basicity, strong irradiation field, and high ionic strength. The top material exhibits the highest sorption capacity together with record-high extraction efficiencies after a single treatment from conditions relevant to the used nuclear fuel (Hanford tank wastes, 95%) and legacy nuclear wastes (Savannah River Sites, 80%) among materials reported thus far.

Three resorcin[4]arene-based lanthanide-coordination polymers with multifunctional photoluminescence sensing properties

By utilizing a novel octacarboxylate-functionalized resorcin[4]arene as organic linkers, three lanthanide-coordination polymers, namely, [(CH3)2NH2][Ln2(HL)(H2O)7]·2H2O (Ln = Tb (1), Eu (2) and Gd (3), H8L = 2,8,14,20-tetra-pentyl-4,6,10,12,16,18,22,24-octa-carboxymethoxy-resorcin[4]arene) have been solvothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. Isostructural 1-3 display unique two dimensional sandwich-based layers built with Ln3+ cations and bowl-shaped HL7- anions. Remarkably, 1 and 2 produce intensive green and red emissions respectively and long lifetimes thanks to the antenna effect of HL7- anions. The energy level testing of 3 indicates that the newly designed ligand H8L has a very efficient intersystem crossing process. More importantly, luminescent investigations reveal that 1 and 2 can selectively detect N,N'-dimethylformamide and Fe3+ ions with turn-on-type and turn-off-type responses, respectively.
