Non-Innocent Methylene Linker in Bridged Lewis Pair Initiators

A comparison of the coordination behaviour of R2PCH2BMe2 (R = Me vs. Ph) ambiphilic ligands with late transition metals

A new synthesis that avoids the use of Me2PH is reported for (Me2PCH2BMe2)2, and this method was extended to the synthesis of (Ph2PCH2BMe2)2. The ligand precursor (Me2PCH2BMe2)2 did not react with [{M(μ-Cl)(cod)}2] (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene; M = Ir and Rh) or [PtCl2(cod)] at room temperature. However, after 12-48 hours at 65-70 °C, these reactions afforded (a) [Ir(cod)(μ-Cl)(Me2PCH2BMe2)] (1), (b) an equilibrium mixture of (Me2PCH2BMe2)2, [{Rh(μ-Cl)(cod)}2] and [Rh(cod)(μ-Cl)(Me2PCH2BMe2)] (2), and (c) cis-[Pt(μ-Cl)2(Me2PCH2BMe2)2] (3), respectively. By contrast, reactions between the phenyl-substituted analogue, (Ph2PCH2BMe2)2, and [{M(μ-Cl)(cod)}2] (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene; M = Ir and Rh) proceeded over the course of 1 hour at 20 °C to generate [M(cod)(μ-Cl)(Ph2PCH2BMe2)] (M = Ir (4) and Rh (5)), indicative of room temperature (Ph2PCH2BMe2)2 dissociation. Room temperature reactions of (Ph2PCH2BMe2)2 with [{Rh(μ-Cl)(coe)2}2] (coe = cyclooctene) using a 1 : 1 or 3 : 1 stoichiometry also afforded [{Rh(coe)(μ-Cl)(Ph2PCH2BMe2)}2] (6) or [RhCl(Ph2PCH2BMe2)3] (7), respectively, where the latter is a borane-appended analogue of Wilkinson's catalyst, and reactions of (Ph2PCH2BMe2)2 with [PtX2(cod)] (X = Cl or Me) yielded cis-[Pt(μ-Cl)2(Ph2PCH2BMe2)2] (8) and cis-[PtMe2(Ph2PCH2BMe2)2] (9). Compounds 1-9, (Me2PCH2BMe2)2 and (Ph2PCH2BMe2)2 were crystallographically characterized. In compounds 1-5 and 8, each chloride co-ligand is coordinated by the borane of an R2PCH2BMe2 ligand. Additionally, in the solid state structure of 6, each bridging chloride ligand interacts weakly with a pendent borane, and in 7, the chloride ligand is tightly coordinated to the borane of one Ph2PCH2BMe2 ligand and weakly coordinated to the borane of a second Ph2PCH2BMe2 ligand. By contrast, both boranes in 9 (and one of the three boranes in 7) are non-coordinated.

Coordination chemistry and structural rearrangements of the Me2PCH2AlMe2 ambiphilic ligand

Reaction of 2 equivalents of (Me₂PCH₂AlMe₂)₂ with [{RhCl(cod)}₂] (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) afforded [{κ²P,P-(Me₃Al)ClMeAl(CH₂PMe₂)₂}Rh(cod)] (1), which features a κ²-coordinated bis(phosphino)aluminate anion. In compound 1, an Al-Cl substituent bridges to a molecule of AlMe₃, which could be removed in vacuo to provide [{κ²P,P-ClMeAl(CH₂PMe₂)₂}Rh(cod)] (2). By contrast, reaction of 1 equiv. of (Me₂PCH₂AlMe₂)₂ with [{RhCl(cod)}₂] yielded [Rh(cod)(μ-Cl)(Me₂PCH₂AlMe₂)] (3) as the major product, where the phosphine donor of an intact Me₂PCH₂AlMe₂ ligand is coordinated to rhodium and a chloride ligand bridges between Rh and Al. [Rh(cod)(μ-Cl)(Me₂PCH₂AlClMe)] (3A) and 2 were also formed as minor products. The aforementioned reactions were carried out in benzene or toluene, whereas the 1 : 1 reaction of (Me₂PCH₂AlMe₂)₂ with [{RhCl(cod)}₂] in THF afforded [{Rh(μ-CH₂PMe₂)(cod)}₂] (4). Reactions of (Me₂PCH₂AlMe₂)₂ with iridium(I), gold(I) and platinum(II) precursors were also explored. A 1 : 1 reaction of (Me₂PCH₂AlMe₂)₂ with [{IrCl(cod)}₂] afforded [{κ²P,P-Cl₂Al(CH₂PMe₂)₂}Ir(cod)] (5) as one of two major phosphine-containing products; unlike 3, this compound features two chlorine substituents on aluminium. For comparison, the rhodium analogue of 5, [{κ²P,P-Cl₂Al(CH₂PMe₂)₂}Rh(cod)] (6), was also synthesized via the 1 : 1 reaction of {ClAl(CH₂PMe₂)₂}₂ with [{RhCl(cod)}₂]. Reactions of (Me₂PCH₂AlMe₂)₂ with [AuCl(CO)] or [PtCl₂(cod)] also resulted in chloride-methyl group exchange between the transition metal and aluminium. However, these reactions generated free (Me₂PCH₂AlClMe)₂ accompanied by gold and ethane, or [PtMe₂(cod)], respectively. Reaction of 1.5 equivalents of (Me₂PCH₂AlMe₂)₂ with [PtMe₂(cod)] at 75 °C afforded zwitterionic [(PtMe{μ-κ¹P:κ²P,P-MeAl(CH₂PMe₂)₃})₂] (7) which features two tris(phosphino)aluminate anions bridging between PtMe units. Compounds 1-2, 3/3A, 4-7 and (Me₂PCH₂AlClMe)₂ were crystallographically characterized.

From Stable PH-Ylides to α-Carbanionic Phosphines as Ligands for Zwitterionic Catalysts

Although ylides are commonly used reagents in organic synthesis, the parent methylphosphine MePH2 only exists in its phosphine form in the condensed phase. Its ylide tautomer H3 P+ -CH2 - is considerably higher in energy. Here, we report on the formation of bis(sulfonyl)methyl-substituted phosphines of the type (RO2 S)2 C(H)-PR2, which form stable PH ylides under ambient conditions, amongst the first examples of an acyclic phosphine which only exists in its PH ylide form. Depending on the exact substitution pattern the phosphines form an equilibrium between the PH ylide and the phosphine form or exist as one of both extremes. These phosphines were found to be ideal starting systems for the facile formation of α-carbanionic phosphines. The carbanion-functionalization leads to a switch from electron-poor to highly electron-rich phosphines with strong donor abilities and high basicities. Thus, the phosphines readily react with different electrophiles exclusively at the phosphorus atom and not at the carbanionic center. Furthermore, the anionic nature of the phosphines allows the formation of zwitterionic complexes as demonstrated by the isolation of a gold(I) complex with a cationic metal center. The cationic gold center allows for catalytic activity in the hydroamination of alkyne without requiring a further activation step.

One-Step Synthesis of Lignin-Based Triblock Copolymers as High-Temperature and UV-Blocking Thermoplastic Elastomers

This work utilizes frustrated Lewis pairs consisting of tethered bis-organophosphorus superbases and a bulky organoaluminum to furnish the highly efficient synthesis of well-defined triblock copolymers via one-step block copolymerization of lignin-based syringyl methacrylate and n-butyl acrylate, through di-initiation and compounded sequence control. The resulting thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) exhibit microphase separation and much superior mechanical properties (elongation at break up to 2091 %, tensile strength up to 11.5 MPa, and elastic recovery up to 95 % after 10 cycles) to those of methyl methacrylate-based TPEs. More impressively, lignin-based tri-BCPs can maintain TPEs properties up to 180 °C, exhibit high transparency and nearly 100 % UV shield, suggesting potential applications in temperature-resistant and optical devices.

Dual-initiating and living frustrated Lewis pairs: expeditious synthesis of biobased thermoplastic elastomers

Biobased poly(γ-methyl-α-methylene-γ-butyrolactone) (PMMBL), an acrylic polymer bearing a cyclic lactone ring, has attracted increasing interest because it not only is biorenewable but also exhibits superior properties to petroleum-based linear analog poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). However, such property enhancement has been limited to resistance to heat and solvent, and mechanically both types of polymers are equally brittle. Here we report the expeditious synthesis of well-defined PMMBL-based ABA tri-block copolymers (tri-BCPs)-enabled by dual-initiating and living frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs)-which are thermoplastic elastomers showing much superior mechanical properties, especially at high working temperatures (80-130 °C), to those of PMMA-based tri-BCPs. The FLPs consist of a bulky organoaluminum Lewis acid and a series of newly designed bis(imino)phosphine superbases bridged by an alkyl linker, which promote living polymerization of MMBL. Uniquely, such bisphosphine superbases initiate the chain growth from both P-sites concurrently, enabling the accelerated synthesis of tri-BCPs in a one-pot, two-step procedure. The results from mechanistic studies, including the single crystal structure of the dually initiated active species, detailed polymerizations, and kinetic studies confirm the livingness of the polymerization and support the proposed polymerization mechanism featuring the dual initiation and subsequent chain growth from both P-sites of the superbase di-initiator.

Controlled and efficient polymerization of methyl methacrylate catalyzed by pyridinylidenaminophosphine based Lewis pairs

Developing different synthetic approaches to realize controlled or living polymerization is of great interest to polymer chemists to obtain polymers with defined molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution and unambiguous structures.

Rapid and Scalable Access to Sequence-Controlled DHDM Multiblock Copolymers by FLP Polymerization

An immortal N-(diphenylphosphanyl)-1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethyl-1,3-dihydro-2H-imidazol-2-imine/diisobutyl (2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenoxy) aluminum (P(NIⁱ Pr)Ph₂ /(BHT)Alⁱ Bu₂ )-based frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) polymerization strategy is presented for rapid and scalable synthesis of the sequence-controlled multiblock copolymers at room temperature. Without addition of extra initiator or catalyst and complex synthetic procedure, this method enabled a tripentacontablock copolymer (n=53, k=4, dp_n =50) to be achieved with the highest reported block number (n=53) and molecular weight (M_n =310 kg mol^-1 ) within 30 min. More importantly, this FLP polymerization strategy provided access to the multiblock copolymers with tailored properties by precisely adjusting the monomer sequence and block numbers.

C–H Bond Activation of Silyl-Substituted Pyridines with Bis(Phenolate)Yttrium Catalysts as a Facile Tool towards Hydroxyl-Terminated Michael-Type Polymers

Herein, silicon-protected, ortho-methylated hydroxy-pyridines were reported as initiators in 2-aminoalkoxy-bis(phenolate)yttrium complexes for rare earth metal-mediated group-transfer polymerization (REM-GTP) of Michael-type monomers. To introduce these initiators, C−H bond activation was performed by reacting [(ONOO)tBuY(X)(thf)] (X = CH2TMS, thf = tetrahydrofuran) with tert-butyl-dimethyl-silyl-functionalized α-methylpyridine to obtain the complex [(ONOOtBuY(X)(thf)] (X = 4-(4′-(((tert-butyldimethylsilyl)oxy)methyl)phenyl)-2,6-di-methylpyridine). These initiators served as functional end-groups in polymers produced via REM-GTP. In this contribution, homopolymers of 2-vinylpyridine (2VP) and diethyl vinyl phosphonate (DEVP) were produced. Activity studies and end-group analysis via mass spectrometry, size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) and NMR spectroscopy were performed to reveal the initiator efficiency, the catalyst activity towards both monomers as well as the initiation mechanism of this initiator in contrast to commonly used alkyl initiators. In addition, 2D NMR studies were used to further confirm the end-group integrity of the polymers. For all polymers, different deprotection routes were evaluated to obtain hydroxyl-terminated poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) and poly(diethyl vinyl phosphonate) (PDEVP). Such hydroxyl groups bear the potential to act as anchoring points for small bioactive molecules, for post-polymerization functionalization or as macroinitiators for further polymerizations.
