Abstract
In recent years, there has been a remarkable surge in the utilization of saturated N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) as ligands in main group chemistry. While the field has predominantly focused on five-membered NHCs and cyclic alkyl(amino) carbene (CAAC) ligands, the investigation of six-membered NHCs (6-NHCs) has only just begun. Despite possessing higher nucleophilicity than their five-membered counterparts, 6-NHCs have been less explored due to their lack of structural rigidity. This feature article aims to highlight recent developments in 6-NHCs in only main group chemistry. Exciting new studies have demonstrated the activation of B-H bonds in HBpin, ring expansion from a six-membered to a seven-membered ring under ambient conditions, and the stabilization of transient units "H-BO" and "(OH)BO", among other intriguing phenomena. A major focus of this review is on synthetic approaches for 6-NHC-stabilized main-group compounds and their unusual properties, as revealed by spectroscopic and crystallographic data. While the chemistry of 6-NHCs is still in its nascent stage, the findings presented in this feature article underscore the need for its exploration and further investigation. Furthermore, this review provides valuable insights into effective synthetic methods for creating new 6-NHC·main group (B, Al, Si, P, Zn, etc.) complexes, along with mechanistic explanations for some of these reactions. These advances hold great promise for the future development of this exciting and rapidly evolving field of N-heterocyclic carbene chemistry.

Abstract
Newly synthesized adducts of CAAC-bound mesitylborylene with carbon monoxide (CO) and trimethylphosphine (PMe3) are established as efficient precursors for the in situ generation of the dicoordinate borylene [(CAAC)BMes] (CAAC = cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene), as demonstrated by their ability to activate elemental chalcogens. Upon thermal or photolytic activation, these precursors readily react with sulfur and selenium, yielding boron chalcogenides characterized by terminal boron-chalcogen double bonds. In contrast, the reaction with tellurium leads to the formation of an unusual diradical ditelluride species with a Te-Te bond. Quantum chemical calculations of its electronic structure indicate an open-shell singlet ground state characterized by significant diradical character. Further investigations into the redox behavior of these boron chalcogenides reveal intriguing transformations, including the redox-induced formation and cleavage of E-E bonds.

Abstract
In this work, we disclose the synthesis and characterization of non-acid/base-stabilized anionic oxoboranes [MesTer2BO][K(L)] (MesTer = -C6H3-2,6-(2,4,6-Me3-C6H2)2, L = [2.2.2]-cryptand or 18-crown-6), which are isoelectronic and isostructural with aryl-substituted ketones. The stepwise synthetic formation of these ion-separated oxoboranes is demonstrated on the one hand by the treatment of the parent borinic acid MesTer2BOH with N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) to give [MesTer2BO][HNHC] derivatives, and on the other hand by a deprotonation-sequestration sequence. Bearing polarized boron-oxygen moieties, their inherent reactivity toward both carbon disulfide and carbon dioxide reveals a unique π-bond metathesis reactivity to yield [(MesTer)2B-μ-E2C=E][K(L)] (E = O, S) derivatives.

Abstract
Oxoboranes (R-BO) are transient species that rapidly trimerise to form boroxines. To date, the only method used to stabilise oxoboranes is to add a Lewis base, but this forms a three-coordinate at boron oxoborane that has a different bonding/reactivity profile. Herein we report a base-free, two-coordinate oxoborane that is isolated as a Lewis adduct with AlCl3. This species, Mes*BO-AlCl3 (Mes*=2,4,6-tBu-C6H2), has a ν11ΒΟ stretching frequency of 1843 cm-1, indicating a strong BO bond. Computational analysis indicates this is due to a highly polarised BO bonding interaction combined with modest BO multiple bond character. While the polarisation of the BO bond on AlCl3 coordination enhances the Lewis acidity at boron it also reduces the basicity at oxygen and the latter is key to accessing a base-free oxoborane. Finally, this oxoborane reacts with PhN3 in a unique way to form an unprecedented boron heterocycle.

Abstract
Strained compounds constitute a highly topical area of research in chemistry. Borirene and borirane both feature a BC2 three-membered ring. They can be viewed as the structural analogues of cyclopropane and cyclopropene, where a CH2 unit of the carbonaceous counterparts is replaced with BH, respectively. Indeed, this structural variation introduces numerous intriguing aspects. For instance, borirane and borirene are both Lewis acidic due to the presence of a tricoordinate borane center. In addition, borirene is 2π aromatic according to Hückel's rule. In addition to their ability to form adducts with Lewis bases and the capacity of borirenes to act as ligands in coordination with metals, both borirenes and boriranes exhibit ring-opening reactivity due to the considerable ring strain. Under specific conditions, coordinated boriranes can even cleave two BC bonds to serve as formal borylene sources (although the reaction mechanisms are quite complex). On the other hand, recent successful syntheses of benzoborienes and their carborane-based three-dimensional analogues (also referred to as carborane-fused boriranes) have introduced novel perspectives to this field. For instance, they display excellent ring-expanding reactivity, possibly attributed to the boosted ring strain arising from the fusion of borirenes with benzene and boriranes with o-carborane. Importantly, their applications as valuable "BC2 " synthons have become increasingly evident along with the newly disclosed reactivity. Additionally, the boosted Lewis acidity of carborane-fused boriranes, thanks to the potent electron-withdrawing effect of o-carborane, combined with their readiness for ring enlargement, makes them promising candidates as electron-accepting building blocks in the construction of chemically responsive luminescent materials. This review provides a summary of the synthesis and reactivity of borirene and borirane derivatives, with the aim of encouraging the design of new borierene- and borirane-based molecules and inspiring further exploration of their potential applications.

Abstract
The Lewis superacid, bis(1-methyl-ortho-carboranyl)borane, is rapidly accessed in two steps. It is a very effective hydroboration reagent capable of B-H addition to alkenes, alkynes, and cyclopropanes. To date, this is the first identified Lewis superacidic secondary borane and most reactive neutral hydroboration reagent.

Abstract
Despite recent advancements in the chemistry of multiply bound boron compounds, the laboratory isolation of the parent oxoborane moiety, HBO has long remained an unsolved and well-recognized challenge. The reaction of 6-SIDipp·BH3 [6-SIDipp = 1,3-di(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)tetrahydropyrimidine-2-ylidene] with GaCl3 afforded an unusual boron-gallium 3c-2e compound (1). The addition of water to 1 resulted in the release of H2 and the formation of a rare acid stabilized neutral parent oxoborane, LB(H)[double bond, length as m-dash]O (2). Crystallographic and density functional theory (DFT) analyses support the presence of a terminal B[double bond, length as m-dash]O double bond. Subsequent addition of another equivalent of water molecule led to hydrolysis of the B-H bond to the B-OH bond, but the 'B[double bond, length as m-dash]O' moiety remained intact, resulting in the formation of the hydroxy oxoborane compound (3), which can be classified as a monomeric form of metaboric acid.

Abstract
Base-stabilized neutral oxoborane and thioxoborane supported by a bis(oxazolinyl)(phenyl)methanide ligand have been synthesized and structurally characterized. While previous synthetic attempts of oxoborane ligated by β-diketiminate (NacNac) did not allow for its isolation in acid-free form, oxoborane supported by a bis(oxazolinyl)(phenyl)methanide ligand is isolable, due to the absence of imine ɑ-protons and steric protection of enamine carbon. Crystallographic analysis revealed the presence of a B-O double bond close to the shortest end of the reported lengths. Its reactivity has also been examined, and it was majorly governed by the nucleophilicity and basicity of the oxygen atom. The chemical inertness and synthetic convenience of the bis(oxazolinyl)(phenyl)methanide scaffold presented in this work suggest its utility as an innocent alternative to the NacNac scaffold.

Abstract
While 1,1-diboryl (gem-diboryl) compounds are valuable synthetic building blocks, currently, related studies have mainly focused on those 1,1-diboryl alkanes without a hetero functional group in the α-position. gem-Diboryl compounds with an α-hetero substituent, though highly versatile, have been limitedly accessible and thus rarely utilized. Herein, we have developed the first α-dihydroboration of heteroalkynes leading to the efficient construction of gem-diboryl, hetero-, and tetra-substituted carbon centers. This straightforward, practical, mild, and atom-economic reaction is an attractive complement to the conventional multistep synthetic strategy relying on deprotonation of gem-diborylmethane by a strong base. Specifically, [Ir(cod)(OMe)]2 was found to be uniquely effective for this process of thioalkynes, leading to excellent α-regioselectivity when delivering the two boryl groups, which is remarkable in view of the many competitive paths including monohydroboration, 1,2-dihydroboration, dehydrodiboration, triboration, tetraboration, etc. Control experiments combined with DFT calculations suggested that this process involves two sequential hydroboration events. The second hydroboration requires a higher energy barrier due to severe steric repulsion in generating the highly congested α-sulfenyl gem-diboryl carbon center, a structural motif that was almost unknown before.

Abstract
Among the parent borirane, benzoborirene and ortho-dicarbadodecaborane-fused borirane, the latter possesses the highest ring strain and the highest Lewis acidity according to our density functional theory (DFT) studies. The synthesis of this class of compounds is thus considerably challenging. The existing examples require either a strong π-donating group or an extra ligand for B-coordination, which nevertheless suppresses or completely turns off the Lewis acidity. The title compound, which possesses both features, not only allows the 1,2-insertion of P=O, C=O or C≡N to proceed under milder conditions, but also enables the heretofore unknown dearomative 1,4-insertion of Ar-(C=O)- into a B-C bond. The fusion of strained molecular systems to an o-carborane cage shows great promise for boosting both the ring strain and acidity.

Abstract
The synthesis of tris(ortho-carboranyl)borane (BoCb3 ), a single site neutral Lewis superacid, in one pot from commercially available materials is achieved. The high fluoride ion affinity (FIA) confirms its classification as a Lewis superacid and the Gutmann-Beckett method as well as adducts with Lewis bases indicate stronger Lewis acidity over the widely used fluorinated aryl boranes. The electron withdrawing effect of ortho-carborane and lack of pi-delocalization of the LUMO rationalize the unusually high Lewis acidity. Catalytic studies indicate that BoCb3 is a superior catalyst for promoting C-F bond functionalization reactions than tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane [B(C6 F5 )3 ].

Abstract
Herein, we report the facile synthesis of a three-dimensional (3D) inorganic analogue of 9,10-diazido-9,10-dihydrodiboraantracene, which turned out to be a monomer in both the solid and solution state, and thermally stable up to 230 °C, representing a rare example of azido borane with boosted Lewis acidity and stability in one. Apart from the classical acid-base and Staudinger reactions, E-H bond activation (E=B, Si, Ge) was investigated. While the reaction with B-H (9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane) led directly to the 1,1-addition on Nα upon N2 elimination, the Si-H (Et3 SiH, PhMe2 SiH) activation proceeded stepwise via 1,2-addition, with the key intermediates 5int and 6int being isolated and characterized. In contrast, the cooperative Ge-H was reversible and stayed at the 1,2-addition step.

Abstract
The iminoboryl o-carboranes (Me3Si)-Cb-B≡N-R (Cb = B10C2H10, 3a, R = SiMe3; 3b, R = tBu) have been successfully synthesized by tetrahydrofuran (THF)-promoted isomerization from the corresponding o-carborane-fused aminoboriranes Cb{BN(SiMe3)R} (2). The synthetic protocol of the previously reported borirane 2a was optimized. The borirane Cb{BN(SiMe3)tBu} (2b) and the iminoboranes 3a and 3b were fully characterized by NMR, IR, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The borirane 2a isomerizes more readily than 2b. The kinetics study revealed a bimolecular mechanism between borirane and THF, which is in good agreement with the computationally proposed reaction pathway. The title compounds are thermally robust, but compound 3a dimerized in the presence of a catalytic amount of tBuNC to give the cyclodimer 4. Quick equilibrium between 4 and the isonitrile adduct 4·tBuNC was observed in solution.

Abstract
Carborynes (1,2-dehydro-o-carborane and 1,3-dehydro-o-carborane), three-dimensional analogues of benzyne, can be generated in situ from the precursors 1-X-2-Li-1,2-C2B10H10 (X = Br, I, OTs, OTf), or 1-Me3Si-2-[IPh(OAc)]-1,2-C2B10H10 or [1-Li-3-N2-1,2-C2B10H10][BF4]. They are a class of very useful synthons for the synthesis of a large variety of functionalized carborane derivatives for potential application in medicine, materials science and organometallic/coordination chemistry. The experimental data demonstrate that there is a correspondence between the reactions of carborynes and those of benzyne with alkenes, dienes, alkynes, aromatics or heteroaromatics in a pericyclic reaction fashion. On the other hand, carborynes have unique properties of their own owing to their steric/electronic features. They undergo regioselective sp2/sp3 C-H bond and N-Li bond insertion reactions, which has not been observed for benzyne. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in this interesting research field with considerable attention devoted to the reaction modes and the mechanisms involved.

Abstract
Though the reaction chemistry of three-membered ring molecules such as cyclopropanes and their heteroatom-containing analogues has been extensively studied, the chemical properties of their boron analogues, boriranes, are little known thus far. This work describes the diverse reactivity patterns of carborane-fused borirane 2. This borirane engages in ring-opening reactions with different types of Lewis acids, such as BBr3, GeCl2, GaCl3, BH3(SMe2) and HBpin, affording a series of ring-opening products, in which M–X or B–H bonds add across the B–C(cage) bond of the three-membered ring in 2. On the other hand, borirane 2 can undergo ring-expansion reactions with unsaturated molecules such as PhCHO, CO2 and PhCN to give ring-expansion products, five-membered boracycles, via a concerted reaction mechanism as supported by DFT calculations. The results of this work not only enrich the reaction chemistry of boriranes, but also offer new routes to boron-containing compounds and heterocycles. Carborane-fused borirane can not only engage in ring-opening reactions with different types of Lewis acids, but also undergo ring-expansion reactions with unsaturated molecules such as PhCHO, CO2 and PhCN to give five-membered boracycles.![]()

Abstract
Structurally authenticated free B-alkyl boroles are presented and electronic implications of alkyl substitution were assessed. Deprotonation of a boron-bound exocyclic methyl group in a B-methyl borole yields the first 5-boratafulvene anion-an isomer to boratabenzene. Boratafulvene was structurally characterized and its electronic structure probed by DFT calculations. The pKa value of the exocyclic B-CH3 in a set of boroles was computationally approximated and confirmed a pronounced acidic character caused by the boron atom embedded in an anti-aromatic moiety. The non-aromatic boratafulvene reacts as a C-centered nucleophile with the mild electrophile Me3 SnCl to give a stannylmethyl borole, regenerating the anti-aromaticity. As nucleophilic synthons for boroles, boratafulvenes thus open an entirely new avenue for synthetic strategies toward this highly reactive class of heterocycles. Boratafulvene reacts as a methylene transfer reagent in a bora-Wittig-type reaction generating a borole oxide.
