Synthesis and characterization of novel wholly para-oriented aromatic polyamide-hydrazides containing sulfone-ether linkages

High-performance wholly aromatic polyamide–hydrazides

The review summarizes the various methods of preparing wholly aromatic polyamide–hydrazides (PAHs). Polyhydrazides are a class of polymers that possess in their repeating units one amide (–NHOC–) and one hydrazide (–CONHNHOC–) linking bond between appropriate aromatic nuclei. The review provides several figures of different molecular structures of PAH and expounds the methods of polymerization, low, high temperature, and phosphorylation polycondensation methods. Polyhydrazides exhibit some unique and potentially useful properties such as outstanding thermal and thermo-oxidative resistance, very high mechanical strength, and ultrahigh moduli. PAHs undergo structural transformation into poly(amide-1,3,4-oxadiazole)s upon heating, which are also considered highly thermally stable polymers. The review presents a description of the structure–property relation of PAHs. The application of PAHs in reverse osmosis applications has been discussed, as well as the preparation of fibers and metallized PAHs films. Modification of the PAH with carbon nanotubes and graphene and the future prospects for PAHs were introduced with comprehensive references pertaining to this area of research.

Novel self-dyed wholly aromatic polyamide-hydrazides covalently bonded with azo groups in their main chains: 1. Structure-property relationships

Twelve novel intrinsically colored wholly aromatic azopolyamide-hydrazides containing various proportions of para- and meta-phenylene units were successfully synthesized by a low temperature (−10 °C) solution polycondensation reaction of either 4-amino-3-hydroxybenzhydrazide (4A3HBH) or 3-amino-4-hydroxybenzhydrazide (3A4HBH) with an equimolar amount of either 4,4′-azodibenzoyl chloride (4,4′ADBC), 3,3′-azodibenzoyl chloride (3,3′ADBC), or mixtures of various molar ratios of 4,4′ADBC and 3,3′ADBC in anhydrous N,N-dimethyl acetamide (DMAc) containing 3% (wt/v) LiCl as a solvent. The structures of the polymers were proven by elemental analysis, FTIR, ¹H- and ¹³C-NMR spectroscopy. The polymers’ properties were strongly affected by their various structures. The intrinsic viscosities of the polymers were ranged from 0.7 to 4.75 dL g⁻¹ and increased with the para-phenylene units content. The polymers are partially soluble in DMAc, dimethyl formamide (DMF) and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP). Their solubility increases with the introduction of meta-phenylene moieties into the polymer chains. The polymers exhibit a great affinity for water sorption. Their hydrophilicity increases as a function of the content of meta-phenylene rings incorporated into the polymer. Mechanical properties of the polymer films are improved markedly by substitution of para-phenylene units for meta-phenylene units. The completely para-oriented type polymer has the best thermal and thermo-oxidative stability relative to those of the other polymers.

Selective imaging of active pharmaceutical ingredients in powdered blends with common excipients utilizing two-photon excited ultraviolet-fluorescence and ultraviolet-second order nonlinear optical imaging of chiral crystals

Second order nonlinear optical imaging of chiral crystals (SONICC) and two-photon excited fluorescence measurements [both autofluorescence and two-photon excited UV-fluorescence (TPE-UVF)] were assessed for the selective detection of APIs relative to common pharmaceutical excipients. Active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) compose only a small percentage of most tabulated formulations, yet the API distribution within the tablet can affect drug release and tablet stability. Complementary measurements using either UV-SONICC (266 nm detection) or TPE-UVF were shown to generate signals >50-fold more intense for a model API (griseofulvin) than those produced by common pharmaceutical excipients. The combined product of the measurements produced signals >10(4)-fold greater than the excipients studied. UV-SONICC or TPE-UVF produced greater selectivity than analogous measurements with visible-light detection, attributed to the presence of aromatic moieties within the API exhibiting strong one and two photon absorption at ~266 nm. Complementary SONICC and fluorescence measurements allowed for the sensitive detection of the three-dimensional distribution of tadalafil within a Cialis tablet to a depth of >140 μm.
