Characterization and performance of dodecyl amine functionalized graphene oxide and dodecyl amine functionalized graphene/high-density polyethylene nanocomposites: A comparative study

Mechano Chemical Compatibilization of Polyethylene with Graphite by Means of a Suitable Ester

An effective non-covalent compatibilization method for graphite and low-density polyethylene is reported. To obtain this result, pyren-1-yl-stearate (P1S) was synthesized, characterized and mixed with graphite to provide a better dispersion in polyethylene matrix. The P1S improves the dispersion of carbon filler in polyethylene through non-covalent compatibilization: the pyrenyl group gives π-π stacking interactions with graphite and the stearyl chain provides van der Waals interaction with the polymer chain (specifically London dispersion forces). In this study, different P1S/graphite fillers were prepared with a ratio by weight of 90/10 and 50/50, respectively, by using manual and ball-milling mixing. Their stability, interaction and morphology were evaluated through TGA, RX, and SEM. Thermogravimetric analyses showed that ball-milling mixing is more effective than manual mixing in promoting π-π stacking interactions of molecules such as P1S ester containing an alkyl chain and aromatic rings. The role of ball milling is confirmed by X-ray diffraction measurements since it was possible to observe both exfoliation and intercalation phenomena when this technique was used to mix the P1S ester with graphite. SEM analyses of polyethylene containing 1% of the carbon fillers again highlighted the importance of ball milling to promote the interaction of the ester with graphite and, simultaneously, the importance of the alkyl chain in order to achieve polyethylene-graphite compatibilization.

Nonaqueous Interfacial Polymerization-Derived Polyphosphazene Films for Sieving or Blocking Hydrogen Gas

A series of cyclomatrix polyphosphazene films have been prepared by nonaqueous interfacial polymerization (IP) of small aromatic hydroxyl compounds in a potassium hydroxide dimethylsulfoxide solution and hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene in cyclohexane on top of ceramic supports. Via the amount of dissolved potassium hydroxide, the extent of deprotonation of the aromatic hydroxyl compounds can be changed, in turn affecting the molecular structure and permselective properties of the thin polymer networks ranging from hydrogen/oxygen barriers to membranes with persisting hydrogen permselectivities at high temperatures. Barrier films are obtained with a high potassium hydroxide concentration, revealing permeabilities as low as 9.4 × 10^-17 cm³ cm cm^-2 s^-1 Pa^-1 for hydrogen and 1.1 × 10^-16 cm³ cm cm^-2 s^-1 Pa^-1 for oxygen. For films obtained with a lower concentration of potassium hydroxide, single gas permeation experiments reveal a molecular sieving behavior, with a hydrogen permeance of around 10^-8 mol m^-2 s^-1 Pa^-1 and permselectivities of H₂/N₂ (52.8), H₂/CH₄ (100), and H₂/CO₂ (10.1) at 200 °C.

Hygroscopic Behavior of Polypropylene Nanocomposites Filled with Graphene Functionalized by Alkylated Chains

Owing to stringent international environmental and fuel efficiency requirements for lightweight automotive systems, polymer composites have attracted widespread attention. Polypropylene (PP) is a widely employed commercial polymer because of its lightweight and low cost. In this study, PP nanocomposites were fabricated to reduce the moisture absorption of PP composites in automotive headlamp housings. Alkylated chemically modified graphene (CMG-R) was synthesized to reduce the surface hydrophilicity of graphene and increase compatibility with the PP matrix. Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were performed to analyze the nanofillers. X-ray diffraction was performed to determine the interlayer spacing of the nanofiller resulting from surface treatment. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to analyze the crystallinity of the nanocomposites. The results indicated that the improved hydrophobicity of the nanofiller due to alkylation reduced the maximum moisture absorption of the PP nanocomposites by 15% compared to PP composites. The findings of this study are useful for reducing fogging in automotive headlamps.

Surface Functionalization of Graphene-Based Materials: Biological Behavior, Toxicology, and Safe-By-Design Aspects

The increasing exploitation of graphene-based materials (GBMs) is driven by their unique properties and structures, which ignite the imagination of scientists and engineers. At the same time, the very properties that make them so useful for applications lead to growing concerns regarding their potential impacts on human health and the environment. Since GBMs are inert to reaction, various attempts of surface functionalization are made to make them reactive. Herein, surface functionalization of GBMs, including those intentionally designed for specific applications, as well as those unintentionally acquired (e.g., protein corona formation) from the environment and biota, are reviewed through the lenses of nanotoxicity and design of safe materials (safe-by-design). Uptake and toxicity of functionalized GBMs and the underlying mechanisms are discussed and linked with the surface functionalization. Computational tools that can predict the interaction of GBMs behavior with their toxicity are discussed. A concise framing of current knowledge and key features of GBMs to be controlled for safe and sustainable applications are provided for the community.

Polydopamine Functionalized Graphene Oxide as Membrane Nanofiller: Spectral and Structural Studies

High-degree functionalization of graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles (NPs) using polydopamine (PDA) was conducted to produce polydopamine functionalized graphene oxide nanoparticles (GO-PDA NPs). Aiming to explore their potential use as nanofiller in membrane separation processes, the spectral and structural properties of GO-PDA NPs were comprehensively analyzed. GO NPs were first prepared by the oxidation of graphite via a modified Hummers method. The obtained GO NPs were then functionalized with PDA using a GO:PDA ratio of 1:2 to obtain highly aminated GO NPs. The structural change was evaluated using XRD, FTIR-UATR, Raman spectroscopy, SEM and TEM. Several bands have emerged in the FTIR spectra of GO-PDA attributed to the amine groups of PDA confirming the high functionalization degree of GO NPs. Raman spectra and XRD patterns showed different crystalline structures and defects and higher interlayer spacing of GO-PDA. The change in elemental compositions was confirmed by XPS and CHNSO elemental analysis and showed an emerging N 1s core-level in the GO-PDA survey spectra corresponding to the amine groups of PDA. GO-PDA NPs showed better dispersibility in polar and nonpolar solvents expanding their potential utilization for different purposes. Furthermore, GO and GO-PDA-coated membranes were prepared via pressure-assisted self-assembly technique (PAS) using low concentrations of NPs (1 wt. %). Contact angle measurements showed excellent hydrophilic properties of GO-PDA with an average contact angle of (27.8°).

Salavagione H. Graphene and Polyethylene: A Strong Combination Towards Multifunctional Nanocomposites

The key to the preparation of polymer nanocomposites with new or improved properties resides in the homogeneous dispersion of the filler and in the efficient load transfer between components through strong filler/polymer interfacial interactions. This paper reports on the preparation of a series of nanocomposites of graphene and a polyolefin using different experimental approaches, with the final goal of obtaining multifunctional materials. A high-density polyethylene (HDPE) is employed as the matrix, while unmodified and chemically modified graphene fillers are used. By selecting the correct combination as well as the adequate preparation process, the nanocomposites display optimized thermal and mechanical properties, while also conferring good gas barrier properties and significant levels of electrical conductivity.

Improving Dispersion and Barrier Properties of Polyketone/Graphene Nanoplatelet Composites via Noncovalent Functionalization Using Aminopyrene

A series of polyketone (PK) nanocomposite films with varying content of noncovalently functionalized graphene nanoplatelet with 1-aminopyrene (GNP/APy) is prepared by solution blending with a solvent of hexafluoro-2-propanol. GNP/APy, prepared by a facile method, can effectively induce specific interaction such as hydrogen bonding between the amine functional group of GNP/APy and the carbonyl functional group of the PK matrix. With comparison of GNP and GNP/Py as reference materials, intensive investigation on filler-matrix interaction is achieved. In addition, the dispersion state of the functionalized GNP (f-GNPs; GNP/Py and GNP/APy) in the PK matrix is analyzed by three-dimensional nondestructive X-ray microcomputed tomography, and the increased dispersion state of those fillers results in significant improvement in the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR). The enhancement in WVTR of the PK/GNP/APy nanocomposite film at 1 wt % loading of filler leads to a barrier performance approximately 2 times larger compared to that of PK/GNP nanocomposite film and an approximately 92% reduction in WVTR compared to the case of pristine PK film. We expect that this facile method of graphene functionalization to enhance graphene dispersibility as well as interfacial interaction with the polymer matrix will be widely utilized to expand the potential of graphene materials to barrier film applications.

Synthesis and characterization of graphene and functionalized graphene via chemical and thermal treatment methods

Graphene oxide was chemically synthesized, functionalized with dodecyl amine and then reduced. The graphene oxide was also thermally reduced to obtain graphene. Different analyses were employed to structural characterization of the materials.

Structure and thermo-mechanical properties of CTBN-grafted-GO modified epoxy/DDS composites

Carboxyl terminated poly(acrylonitrile-co-butadiene) (CTBN) is grafted on to graphite oxide (GO) to prepare GCTBN in order to improve the dispersion and interfacial bonding between GO and epoxy resin in an epoxy/DDS system.

Improved mechanical and barrier properties of low-density polyethylene nanocomposite films by incorporating hydrophobic graphene oxide nanosheets

The successful conversion from hydrophilic GONSs to hydrophobic ODA–GONSs imparts LDPE nanocomposite films with enhanced mechanical and barrier performances for potential packaging materials.
