A Review of Key Properties of Thermoelectric Composites of Polymers and Inorganic Materials

This review focusses on the development of thermoelectric composites made of oxide or conventional inorganic materials, and polymers, with specific emphasis on those containing oxides. Discussion of the current state-of-the-art thermoelectric materials, including the individual constituent materials, i.e., conventional materials, oxides and polymers, is firstly presented to provide the reader with a comparison of the top-performing thermoelectric materials. Then, individual materials used in the inorganic/polymer composites are discussed to provide a comparison of the performance of the composites themselves. Finally, the addition of carbon-based compounds is discussed as a route to improving the thermoelectric performance. For each topic discussed, key thermoelectric properties are tabulated and comparative figures are presented for a wide array of materials.

PANI coupled hierarchical Bi2S3nanoflowers based hybrid nanocomposite for enhanced thermoelectric performance

Bismuth sulfide (Bi₂S₃) is a promising material for thermoelectric applications owing to its non-toxicity and high abundance of bismuth (Bi) and sulfur (S) elements on earth. However, its low electrical conductivity drastically reduces the value of the figure of merit (ZT). In this work, we have synthesized three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical Bi₂S₃nanoflowers (NFs) by the hydrothermal route and further incorporated them with conducting polymer polyaniline (PANI) by simple chemisorption method. We have investigated the thermoelectric properties of the as-prepared Bi₂S₃NFs and PANI/Bi₂S₃nanocomposite samples and it is demonstrated that the incorporation of the PANI matrix with the 3D hierarchical Bi₂S₃NFs provides a conducting substrate for the easy transport of the electrons and reduces the barrier height at the interface, resulting in ∼62% increment in the electrical conductivity as compared to Bi₂S₃NFs. Moreover, a decrement in the thermal conductivity of the PANI/Bi₂S₃nanocomposite is observed as compared to pristine Bi₂S₃NFs due to the increased phonon scattering at the interfaces facilitated by the hierarchical morphology of the NFs. Furthermore, an increment in the electrical conductivity and simultaneous decrement in the thermal conductivity results in an overall ∼20% increment in the figure of merit (ZT) for PANI/Bi₂S₃nanocomposite as compared to pristine Bi₂S₃NFs. The work highlights an effective strategy of coupling 3D hierarchical metal chalcogenide with conducting polymer for optimizing their thermoelectric properties.

Ethylene-Octene-Copolymer with Embedded Carbon and Organic Conductive Nanostructures for Thermoelectric Applications

Hybrid thermoelectric composites consisting of organic ethylene-octene-copolymer matrices (EOC) and embedded inorganic pristine and functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers or organic polyaniline and polypyrrole particles were used to form conductive nanostructures with thermoelectric properties, which at the same time had sufficient strength, elasticity, and stability. Oxygen doping of carbon nanotubes increased the concentration of carboxyl and C–O functional groups on the nanotube surfaces and enhanced the thermoelectric power of the respective composites by up to 150%. A thermocouple assembled from EOC composites generated electric current by heat supplied with a mere short touch of the finger. A practical application of this thermocouple was provided by a self-powered vapor sensor, for operation of which an electric current in the range of microvolts sufficed, and was readily induced by (waste) heat. The heat-induced energy ensured the functioning of this novel sensor device, which converted chemical signals elicited by the presence of heptane vapors to the electrical domain through the resistance changes of the comprising EOC composites.

Effect of SrTiO3 Nanoparticles in Conductive Polymer on the Thermoelectric Performance for Efficient Thermoelectrics

We present hybrid organic inorganic materials, namely, SrTiO₃/polyaniline (PANI) composites, with high thermoelectric performance; samples with various SrTiO₃ contents (10, 20, 30, and 50 wt.%) were prepared. The PANI component was obtained through the polymerization of aniline monomers, followed by camphosulfonic acid-doping to enhance its electrical conductivity. SrTiO₃, with a high Seebeck coefficient, was used as the N-type inorganic componenet; it was synthesized via a one-pot solvothermal methods and, then, dispersed into the conductive PANI matrix. The SrTiO₃ content influenced the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity of the resulting composites. The variations in the thermoelectric properties of the SrTiO₃/PANI composites consequently changed their power factor; at room temperature, the highest value was ~49.6 μW·m/K², which is 17 times larger than that of pure PANI.

Zr-MOF/Polyaniline Composite Films with Exceptional Seebeck Coefficient for Thermoelectric Material Applications

Controlling the polymerization of aniline in the presence of zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) using polystyrene sulfonic acid as a dopant resulted in the formation of a new type of free-standing thermoelectric composite film. Polyaniline chains interpenetrate into the Zr-MOFs to enhance the crystallinity of polyaniline, resulting in an improved degree of electrical conductivity. In addition, the inherent porosity of the Zr-MOFs functions to suppress the increase in thermal conductivity, thus dramatically promoting a negative Seebeck coefficient. When 20 wt % Zr-MOF was used, a power factor of up to 664 μW/(m K²) was obtained, which was accompanied by a surprisingly large, negative Seebeck coefficient. The new class of MOF-based composites offers a new direction for developing new types of efficient thermoelectric materials.
