Impact of shape (nanofiller vs. nanorod) of TiO2 nanoparticle on free-standing solid polymeric separator for energy storage/conversion devices

On enhancing the Li-ion conductivity of quasi-solid-state electrolytes by suppressing the flexibility of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 via a mixed ligand strategy

Zeolitic imidazole frameworks (ZIFs) have emerged as potential conductive materials for Li ion-transport in polymer solid state electrolytes. However, developing ZIFs with high Li ionic conductivity is rather limited due to their flexible frameworks allowing dual ion conduction. Herein, we have used a mixed ligand strategy for fine-tuning the aperture and enhancing the rigidity of ZIF-8, which restricts the passage of large size anions. Poly(ethylene oxide)-based quasi-solid state electrolytes utilizing mixed ligand ZIF-7-8 frameworks as passive fillers show a continuous enhancement in Li ion-conductivity exclusively attributed to modifications in the flexibility and pore architecture of ZIF-8 as confirmed through broadband dielectric spectroscopy and positron annihilation spectroscopy. This study shows that polymer segmental relaxation and conductivity relaxation processes are decoupled in these electrolytes. Consequently, our proposed approach provides a new strategy for manufacturing a polymer-based electrolyte with enhanced ionic conductivity.

Modification of DSSC Based on Polymer Composite Gel Electrolyte with Copper Oxide Nanochain by Shape Effect

Solvent evaporation and leakage of liquid electrolytes that restrict the practicality of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) motivate the quest for the development of stable and ionic conductive electrolyte. Gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) fits the criteria, but it still suffers from low efficiency due to insufficient segmental motion within the electrolytes. Therefore, incorporating metal oxide nanofiller is one of the approaches to enhance the performance of electrolytes due to the presence of cross-linking centers that can be coordinated with the polymer segments. In this research, polymer composite gel electrolytes (PCGEs) employing poly (vinyl butyral-co-vinyl alcohol-co-vinyl acetate) (P(VB-co-VA-co-VAc)) terpolymer as host polymer, tetrapropylammonium iodide (TPAI) as dopant salt, and copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles as the nanofillers were produced. The CuO nanofillers were synthesized by sonochemical method and subsequently calcined at different temperatures (i.e., 200, 350, and 500 °C), denoted as CuO-200, CuO-350, and CuO-500, respectively. All CuO nanoparticles have different shapes and sizes that are connected in a chain which impact the amorphous phase and the roughness of the surface, proven by the structural and the morphological analyses. It was found that the PCGE consisting of CuO-350 exhibited the highest ionic conductivity of 2.54 mS cm⁻¹ and apparent diffusion coefficient of triiodide of 1.537 × 10⁻⁴ cm² s⁻¹. The enhancement in the electrochemical performance of the PCGEs is correlated with the change in shape (rod to sphere) and size of CuO particles which disrupted the structural order of the polymer chain, facilitating the redox couple transportation. Additionally, a DSSC was fabricated and achieved the highest power conversion efficiency of 7.05% with J_SC of 22.1 mA cm⁻², V_OC of 0.61 V, and FF of 52.4%.

Recent Advances and Perspectives on the Polymer Electrolytes for Sodium/Potassium-Ion Batteries

Owing to the low cost of sodium/potassium resources and similar electrochemical properties of Na⁺ /K⁺ to Li⁺ , sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) are regarded as promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in large-scale energy storage field. However, traditional organic liquid electrolytes bestow SIBs/KIBs with serious safety concerns. In contrast, quasi-/solid-phase electrolytes including polymer electrolytes (PEs) and inorganic solid electrolytes (ISEs) show great superiority of high safety. However, the poor processibility and relatively low ionic conductivity of Na⁺ and K⁺ ions limit the further practical applications of ISEs. PEs combine some merits of both liquid-phase electrolytes and ISEs, and present great potentials in next-generation energy storage systems. Considerable efforts have been devoted to improving their overall properties. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of an in-depth and comprehensive review to get insights into mechanisms and corresponding design strategies of PEs. Herein, the advantages of different electrolytes, particularly PEs are first minutely reviewed, and the mechanism of PEs for Na⁺ /K⁺ ion transfer is summarized. Then, representative researches and recent progresses of SIBs/KIBs based on PEs are presented. Finally, some suggestions and perspectives are put forward to provide some possible directions for the follow-up researches.

Effect of Carbon Fillers on the Wear Resistance of PA6 Thermoplastic Composites

In this study, the influence of different carbon fillers on the tribological and manufacturing properties of the thermoplastic polyamide PA6 is presented. The following materials were used as carbon additives: glassy carbon (GC), carbon obtained from the pyrolysis of polymer wastes (BC), and graphene oxide (GO). Fillers were introduced into the PA6 matrix by mechanical stirring in alcohol to settle carbon particles onto the granule surface. Samples were made by injection molding from the produced granules. The microstructure, hardness, and melt flow index (MFI) of the prepared materials were determined. Also, the degree of crystallinity of the samples was examined by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). The melting point (Tm) was examined using DSC, the results from which allowed the correct heat treatment of PA6 to increase the crystallinity of the obtained material to be selected. The dry sliding tribological behavior of the composites was evaluated via pin-on-block tests against cast iron counterparts. The tests were performed at room temperature, with a sliding speed 0.1 m/s, a sliding distance of 250 m, and a normal force of 40 N. The obtained results revealed that the introduction of GO into the PA6 matrix provides favorable wear behavior, such as the formation of debris that acts as rollers that give a decrease in wear and a lower coefficient of friction. The coefficient of friction in samples with graphene oxide was nearly two times lower than with other samples. However, the ease of manufacture of this material was drastically reduced compared to GC or BC fillers. Microstructural investigations of wear tracks revealed poor adhesion between the polymer matrix and micrograins of carbon fillers (GC and BC), and therefore their influence on tribological properties was less compared to graphene oxide.
