Elastic Properties of Chimpanzee Craniofacial Cortical Bone

The effect of different grasping types on strain distributions in the trapezium of bonobos (Pan paniscus)

The thumb has played a key role in primate evolution due to its involvement in grasping and manipulation. A large component of this wide functionality is by virtue of the uniquely shaped trapeziometacarpal (TMC) joint. This TMC joint allows for a broad range of functional positions, but how its bone structure is adapted to withstand such a large variety of loading regimes is poorly understood. Here, we outline a novel, integrated finite element - micro finite element (FE-µFE) workflow to analyse strain distributions across the internal bony architecture. We have applied this modelling approach to study functional adaptation in the bonobo thumb. More specifically, the approach allows us to evaluate how strain is distributed through the trapezium upon loading of its distal articular facet. As loading conditions, we use pressure distributions for different types of grasping that were estimated in a previous study. Model evaluation shows that the simulated strain values fall within realistic boundaries of the mechanical response of bone. The results show that the strain distributions between the simulated grasps are highly similar, with dissipation towards the proximo-ulnar cluster of trabeculae regardless of trapezial bone architecture. This study presents an innovative FE-µFE approach to simulating strain distributions, and yields insight in the functional adaptation of the TMC joint in bonobos.

Material properties of the skull layers of the primate parietal bone: A single-subject study

The outer cortical table of the parietal bone has been commonly used as a calvarial bone graft site for the craniofacial reconstruction. However, little is known about how removing the outer table may affect the function and structure of the inner table, and how the knowledge of the biomechanics and material properties of cortical bones will help the calvarial graft to better integrate into the biological and mechanical functions of its surrounding native tissues. In this study, it was hypothesized that there were significant differences in both density and material properties between inner and outer cortical plates in cranial bones. Twelve cylindrical specimens, including inner-outer layers, of cortical parietal bone of a female baboon were collected. Cortical thicknesses and densities were measured, and elastic properties were assessed using an ultrasonic technique. Results demonstrated remarkable difference in both thickness (t = 8.248, p ≤0.05) and density (t = 4.926, p≤0.05) between inner and outer cortical paired samples. Orthotropic characteristics of the cortical plates were detected as well, these findings suggest that there are differences in biomechanical properties between two surfaces of cranial bones at both tissue and organ levels. How these differences are linked to the stress environments of the inner and outer cranial cortical layers awaits further studies. Further study will greatly enhance our ability to address questions derived from both morphological and craniofacial medicine fields about the development and biomechanics of craniofacial skeletons.

Evolution of the Jugal/Zygomatic Bones

This issue of the Anatomical Record is the second of a two-volume set on the zygoma (also called the cheek bone, the zygomatic bone, the malar, or the jugal, the latter term being used in vertebrates other than mammals). The zygoma is an important component of the craniofacial skeleton, in which the zygoma is a connection between the midfacial and the cranial skeletons; has a functional role as the origin of one of the masticatory muscles, the masseter muscle, and several facial muscles; has been considered as an essential buttress of the facial skeleton for resisting masticatory forces; and has importance for determining phylogenetic relationships. In humans, the zygoma is also of aesthetic significance for facial appearance, and its restoration following trauma has resulted in a large clinical literature. In this second half of the special issue on the zygoma, a series of papers discuss studies related to evolution of the zygoma and related parts of the craniofacial skeleton throughout the vertebrates, and in particular in human evolution. There are also a series of articles discussing variation of the zygoma in modern humans. Development, Structure, and Function of the Zygomatic Bones: What is New and Why Do We Care?

This issue of The Anatomical Record is the first of a two-volume set on the zygoma (also called the cheek bone, the zygomatic bone, the malar, or the jugal, the latter term being used in vertebrates other than mammals). The zygoma is an important component of the craniofacial skeleton, in which the zygoma is a connection between the midfacial and the cranial skeletons; has a functional role as the origin of one of the masticatory muscles, the masseter muscle, and several facial muscles; has been considered as an essential buttress of the facial skeleton for resisting masticatory forces; and has importance for determining phylogenetic relationships. In this first volume of this Special Issue, a wide ranging series of papers discuss studies related to issues of development, structure, and function of the zygoma and closely related parts of the craniofacial skeleton in mammals, and in particular primates. The second volume, which will be published as the January 2017 issue of The Anatomical Record, will focus on variation and evolution of the zygoma throughout the vertebrates. Biomechanical implications of cortical elastic properties of the macaque mandible

Knowledge of the variation in the elastic properties of mandibular cortical bone is essential for modeling bone function. Our aim was to characterize the elastic properties of rhesus macaque mandibular cortical bone and compare these to the elastic properties from mandibles of dentate humans and baboons. Thirty cylindrical samples were harvested from each of six adult female rhesus monkey mandibles. Assuming orthotropy, axes of maximum stiffness in the plane of the cortical plate were derived from ultrasound velocity measurements. Further velocity measurements with longitudinal and transverse ultrasonic transducers along with measurements of bone density were used to compute three-dimensional cortical elastic properties using equations based on Hooke's law. Results showed regional variations in the elastic properties of macaque mandibular cortical bone that have both similarities and differences with that of humans and baboons. So far, the biological and structural basis of these differences is poorly understood.
