Colorectal cancer metastasis to the thyroid: A case report and review of the literature

Metastatic thyroid cancer is rare. Here, the case of a patient with colon cancer that metastasized to the thyroid is described. The patient underwent radical rectal cancer surgery in August 2017 and received six cycles of chemotherapy with oxaliplatin and capecitabine postoperatively. On August 4, 2018, the patient was admitted to the hospital due to the discovery of thyroid nodules on ultrasound and carcinoembryonic antigen levels within the normal range. The biopsy from the fine needle aspiration suggested a malignant tumor. The patient underwent radical thyroid cancer surgery. Using intraoperative rapid frozen pathology, medullary carcinoma was diagnosed. Using postoperative routine pathology combined with immunohistochemistry results, thyroid metastasis from colorectal adenocarcinoma was diagnosed. After surgery, the patient regularly visited the outpatient clinic for chemotherapy with capecitabine. As of May 2023, the patient is still alive with no recurrence.

Metastasis of liver cancer to the thyroid after surgery: A case report

BACKGROUND

Secondary thyroid malignancies are rarely reported, especially thyroid metastasis after resection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We report a patient with thyroid metastasis after resection of HCC.

CASE SUMMARY

A 42-year-old female underwent partial hepatectomy for HCC three years ago. She attended hospital because of neck discomfort. After various examinations, she was diagnosed with metastatic HCC. She survived after surgical resection of the affected side of the thyroid.

CONCLUSION

Although secondary malignant tumor of the thyroid is classified as distant metastasis, surgical resection is still necessary according to the patient's condition.

Thyroid metastasis from rectal adenocarcinoma involving the airway treated by crico-tracheal resection and anastomosis: the role of palliative surgery

A 59-year-old woman underwent surgical removal of a pT3N3M0 rectal adenocarcinoma (RAC) through an abdominal-perineal approach followed by chemoradiotherapy (CHT-RT) in 1995. She underwent a right inferior lobectomy for a lung metastasis 3 years later, followed in 2000 by an additional intervention for a second metastasis that was treated by a left superior atypical lobectomy and CHT. The patient complained 1 year later of dysphagia and an anterior neck mass was found. US examination detected a multifocal lesion in the thyroid gland with involvement of the strap muscles, which was confirmed by FNAB to be a third RAC metastasis. A palliative course of RT was performed, but no regression of the lesion was observed. Crico-tracheal infiltration was also suspected after CT scan. The patient was in good general condition and strongly favored surgery. In August 2001 she underwent total thyroidectomy, total parathyroidectomy, strap muscles excision, central compartment neck dissection and crico-tracheal resection and anastomosis involving the anterior arch of the cricoid between the crico-thyroid joints and the first three tracheal rings. She was extubated at the end of the surgical procedure with no tracheotomy, started an oral diet the day after, and was discharged without complications 9 days later. She was followed up monthly by endoscopy and has undergone one CT and two MR scans at 6-month intervals. The patient had no RAC recurrence in the neck when last seen 26 months after surgery. During this time, she underwent four further lung metastasectomies followed by CHT.

Metastatic adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix to the thyroid gland

Clinically diagnosed metastasis to the thyroid gland is rare. The authors present the first reported case of metastasis to the thyroid gland from a primary adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix.

Metastatic adenocarcinoma in a thyroid colloid nodule: a rare presentation of colon cancer

Colorectal cancer can remain asymptomatic for years. Frequently symptoms develop insidiously and may often remain unnoticed for long periods, even in the presence of disseminated disease. We herein report an unusual case of a patient with carcinoma of the sigmoid colon and multiple liver metastases. The diagnosis was established only after the patient was operated on for a large colloid nodule, a single microscopic metastatic focus being noticed in the histologic sections. The differential diagnosis compared with the columnar type of papillary carcinoma is discussed.

Solitary thyroid nodule: diagnosis and management

Thyroid nodules are common. Most are benign lesions since clinically important thyroid carcinoma is a relatively rare disease. The most sensitive and specific test for the diagnosis of thyroid cancer is fine-needle aspiration biopsy, but its diagnostic accuracy depends upon whether or not one excises all suspicious nodules, thus including them as correctly diagnosed. Nevertheless, fine-needle aspiration biopsy is the most sensitive, specific, and cost-effective test for thyroid cancer. Therapy depends upon the cause of the thyroid nodule.
