Effect of CNT over structural properties of SAPO-34 in MTO process: Experimental and molecular simulation studies

The hierarchical silicoaluminophosphate (SAPO-34) catalyst was synthesized using the mixtures of diethylamine (D) and butylamine (B) as a structure-directing agent (SDA), and carbon nanotube (CNT) as a secondary template in the hydrothermal method. The catalysts were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), N2 physisorption, and temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD) techniques and evaluated for the catalytic activity in the Methanol to Olefins (MTO) process. The results showed that the use of CNT as the secondary template improved the hierarchical structure of SAPO-34 due to increasing the external surface area and mesoporosity and decreasing the particle size and as a result, made better the performance of the prepared SAPO-34 zeolite in the MTO process. Among all the prepared samples, the CNT-B-D catalyst synthesized by mixing three templates displayed the highest ethylene and propylene selectivity of 49% and 34%, respectively. Also, using CNT in the synthesis of samples increased the catalytic stability. In addition, pure, binary, and ternary adsorption isotherms and diffusivities of the main products and reactants over the SAPO-34 were investigated by theoretical measurements, because sorption and diffusion affect the catalyst stability and C2-C3 selectivity in the MTO reaction. The higher diffusion rate of ethylene leads to following the aromatic-based cycle in the MTO process.

Dynamic Adsorption/Desorption of NOx on MFI Zeolites: Effects of Relative Humidity and Si/Al Ratio

Adsorption is a potential technology that is expected to meet NO_x ultra-low emission standards and achieve the recovery of NO₂. In this study, the adsorption/desorption behavior of NO_x with competitive gases (e.g., H₂O(g) and CO₂) was studied on MFI zeolites with different Si/Al ratios and under different relative humidity (0~90% RH). Sample characterization of self-synthesizing zeolites was conducted by means of X-ray diffraction, Ar adsorption-desorption, and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that low-silica HZSM-5(35) showed the highest NO_x adsorption capacity of 297.8 μmol/g (RH = 0) and 35.4 μmol/g (RH = 90%) compared to that of other adsorbents, and the efficiency loss factor of NO_x adsorption capacity at 90%RH ranged from 85.3% to 88.1%. A water-resistance strategy was proposed for NO_x multicomponent competitive adsorption combined with dynamic breakthrough tests and static water vapor adsorption. The presence of 14% O₂ and lower adsorption temperature (25 °C) favored NO_x adsorption, while higher CO₂ concentrations (~10.5%) had less effect. The roll-up factor (η) was positively correlated with lower Si/Al ratios and higher H₂O(g) concentrations. Unlike Silicalite-1, HZSM-5(35) exhibited an acceptable industrial desorption temperature window of NO₂ (255~265 °C). This paper aims to provide a theoretical guideline for the rational selection of NO_x adsorbents for practical applications.

Size controllable synthesis of ZSM-5 zeolite and its catalytic performance in the reaction of methanol conversion to aromatics

ZSM-5 zeolites were hydrothermally synthesized with commercial silica sol, and the crystal size was controlled by adding silicalite-1 seed in the synthetic system. The crystal size of ZSM-5 was affected by the crystallization time of seed, seed content and seed size. ZSM-5 zeolites with controllable particle size in the range of 200-2200 nm could be obtained. The prepared samples with different particle sizes were used for the reaction of methanol conversion to aromatics (MTA). The results suggested that the HZSM-5 catalyst with small crystal size showed much longer catalyst lifetime and higher selectivity for C₅ ⁺ hydrocarbons and aromatics, especially C₉ ⁺ aromatics in the MTA reaction. Moreover, the introduction of zinc (Zn) into the HZSM-5 zeolites can considerably promote the selectivity to aromatics in the products. Zn modified HZSM-5 zeolites with different Zn loading amounts were prepared by the incipient wetness impregnation method, and the highest aromatics selectivity was obtained when the Zn loading was 1.0%. The improvement of methanol aromatization was ascribed to the synergistic effect of Brønsted acid sites and the newly formed Zn-Lewis acid sites.

Molecular dynamic simulation studies of adsorption and diffusion behaviors of methanol and ethanol through ZSM-5 zeolite

Due to the importance of synthesis gas's entire conversion to methanol, the separation of methanol from unconverted synthesis gas is an industrial challenge. In this work, the influence of temperature, guest molecules concentrations (methanol and ethanol), and acid site density (Si/Al) of zeolites on the diffusion of methanol and ethanol, pure and binary mixture (80% methanol and 20% ethanol) in silicalite-1 and HZSM-5 (Si/Al = 47 and 23) were studied by using of the COMPASS force-field molecular dynamics method. Also, the adsorption of pure methanol and ethanol and binary mixture through these zeolites has been studied by using the Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) method. The calculated adsorption rate and isosteric heat of adsorption for ethanol are lower and higher than methanol, respectively. The results of the binary mixture show that HZSM-5 (Si/Al = 23) has the lowest adsorption selectivity and most diffusion selectivity. The calculated diffusion coefficients of methanol and ethanol guest molecules decreased with rising guest molecule concentration and Si/Al-ratios. The effect of both agents was investigated by analysis of mean square displacement (MSD) and RDF diagram.
