Abstract
New Y-shaped ferrocene conjugated imidazole chromophores were prepared and fully characterized. The Y-shaped structure was confirmed by the single crystal X-ray diffraction technique. The chromophores show interesting second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties in solution, as determined by the Electric-Field Induced Second Harmonic generation (EFISH) technique. Remarkably, the trifluoro substituted compound 3 is characterized by a high μβEFISH value and has good potential as a molecular building block for composite films with Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) properties. For all compounds, the dipole moments and frontier orbital energies were calculated by the Density Functional Theoretical method.

Abstract
We present organic, diamagnetic materials based on structurally simple (hetero-)tolane derivatives. They form crystalline thin-film aggregates that are suitable for Faraday rotation (FR) spectroscopy. The resulting new materials are characterized appropriately by common spectroscopic (NMR, UV-Vis), microscopy (POM), and XRD techniques. The spectroscopic studies give extremely high FR activities, thus making these materials promising candidates for future practical applications. Other than a proper explanation, we insist on the complexity of designing efficient FR materials starting from single molecules.

Molecular understanding of label-free second harmonic imaging of microtubules. Nat Commun 2019; 10:3530. Abstract
Microtubules are a vital component of the cell’s cytoskeleton and their organization is crucial for healthy cell functioning. The use of label-free SH imaging of microtubules remains limited, as sensitive detection is required and the true molecular origin and main determinants required to generate SH from microtubules are not fully understood. Using advanced correlative imaging techniques, we identified the determinants of the microtubule-dependent SH signal. Microtubule polarity, number and organization determine SH signal intensity in biological samples. At the molecular level, we show that the GTP-bound tubulin dimer conformation is fundamental for microtubules to generate detectable SH signals. We show that SH imaging can be used to study the effects of microtubule-targeting drugs and proteins and to detect changes in tubulin conformations during neuronal maturation. Our data provide a means to interpret and use SH imaging to monitor changes in the microtubule network in a label-free manner. Microtubules (MTs) are well-studied cytoskeleton components, but have primarily been investigated using fixation or invasive techniques. Here, the authors use label-free second harmonic (SH) fluorescence and correlative light electron microscopy to pinpoint determinants required for SH from MTs.

Abstract
Two hexadentate bipyridine ligands and their RuII and NiII complexes were prepared. The helical alignment of the three electron-donor-π-bridge-electron-acceptor (d-π-A) single-strands with bundle architecture in cooperation with the metal center can strongly enhance the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. The complexation of the novel cage-type hexadentate ligands with a paramagnetic NiII -core almost doubles the βHRS values compared with the corresponding diamagnetic RuII complexes. The hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) was performed with a highly sensitive setup for simultaneous discrimination between multi-photon fluorescence and the molecular first hyperpolarizability.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive mental disorder disease, which affects 26.6 million people worldwide and estimated increments can be 100 millions by 2050. Since there is no cure at present, early diagnosis of AD is crucial for the current drug treatments. Driven by the need, here we demonstrate for the first time that monoclonal anti-tau antibody-coated gold nanoparticle based two-photon scattering assay can be used for the detection of Alzheimer's tau protein in the 1 pg/mL level which is about 2 orders of magnitude lower than cutoff values (195 pg/mL) for tau protein in CSF (cerebrospinal fluid). We have shown that when anti-tau antibody-coated gold nanoparticles were mixed with 20 ng/mL of tau protein, two-photon Rayleigh scattering intensity (TPRS) increases by about 16 times. The mechanism of TPRS intensity change has been discussed. Our data demonstrated that our TPRS assay is highly sensitive to tau protein and it can distinguish from BSA, which is one of the most abundant protein components in CSF. Our results demonstrate the potential for a broad application of this type of nanobionanotechnology in practical biomedical applications.

Abstract
Infectious diseases caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remain the leading killers of human beings worldwide, and function to destabilize societies in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Driven by the need to detect the presence of HIV viral sequence, here we demonstrate that the second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of gold nanorods can be used for screening HIV-1 viral DNA sequence without any modification, with good sensitivity (100 pico-molar) and selectivity (single base-pair mismatch). The hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) intensity increases 45 times when a label-free 145-mer, ss-gag gene DNA, was hybridized with 100 pM target DNA. The mechanism of HRS intensity change has been discussed with experimental evidence for higher multipolar contribution to the NLO response of gold nanorods.
