Abstract
Fused polycyclic aromatic compounds are interesting materials for organic electronics applications. To fine-tune photophysical or electrochemical properties, either various substituents can be attached or heteroatoms (such as N or S) can be incorporated into the fused aromatic backbone. Coronenes and heterocoronenes are promising compounds in this respect. Up until now, the possibilities for varying the attached fused heteroaromatics at the coronene core were quite limited, and realizing both electron-withdrawing and -donating rings at the same time was very difficult. Here, a series of pyridine, anisole and thiophene annulated tetraareno[a,d,j,m]coronenes has been synthesized by a facile two-step route that is a combination of Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling and a following cyclization step, starting from three different diarenoperylene dibromides. The contorted molecular π-planes of the obtained cata-condensed tetraarenocoronenes were analyzed by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and the photophysical and electrochemical properties were systematically investigated by UV/Vis spectroscopy and cyclovoltammetry.

Abstract
Nanographenes (NGs) and graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are unique connectors between the domains of 1D-conjugated polymers and 2D-graphenes. They can be synthesized with high precision by oxidative flattening processes from dendritic or branched 3D-polyphenylene precursors. Their size, shape and edge type enable not only accurate control of classical (opto)electronic properties, but also access to unprecedented high-spin structures and exotic quantum states. NGs and GNRs serve as active components of devices such as field-effect transistors and as ideal objects for nanoscience. This field of research includes their synthesis after the deposition of suitable monomers on surfaces. An additional advantage of this novel concept is in situ monitoring of the reactions by scanning tunnelling microscopy and electronic characterization of the products by scanning tunnelling spectroscopy.

Abstract
Solid-state packing plays a defining role in the properties of a molecular organic material, but it is difficult to elucidate in the absence of single crystals that are suitable for X-ray diffraction. Herein, we demonstrate the coupling of divergent synthesis with microcrystal electron diffraction (MicroED) for rapid assessment of solid-state packing motifs, using a class of chiral nanocarbons-expanded helicenes-as a proof of concept. Two highly selective oxidative dearomatizations of a readily accessible helicene provided a divergent route to four electron-deficient analogues containing quinone or quinoxaline units. Crystallization efforts consistently yielded microcrystals that were unsuitable for single-crystal X-ray diffraction, but ideal for MicroED. This technique facilitated the elucidation of solid-state structures of all five compounds with <1.1 Å resolution. The otherwise-inaccessible data revealed a range of notable packing behaviors, including four different space groups, homochirality in a crystal for a helicene with an extremely low enantiomerization barrier, and nanometer scale cavities.

Abstract
Oxygen migration and spectroscopic properties of coronene (C24) epoxides and persulfurated coronene (PSC) oxides have been investigated by using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). The rim-oxide is predicted to be more energetically favorable than the oxygen-centered configuration, and the application of an external electric field can accelerate the epoxy migration from the middle to the edge of the molecule. The predicted electronic absorptions and emissions of the C24 epoxides strongly depend on the location of oxygen. In particular, the stable edge-epoxide C24d3 has the largest radiative decay rate (kr) and the smallest non-radiative decay rate (knr), suggesting relatively strong fluorescence emission. On the contrary, absorptions and emissions of the PSC oxides are less changed, compared to those of the pristine PSC. On-the-fly trajectory surface hopping dynamics simulations reveal that the nonadiabatic S1 → S0 decay of the C24 epoxides is triggered by C-O bond stretching, and thus the radiative and nonradiative features depend on the C-O bond strength. The present results indicate that the oxygen diffusion on the basal plane of graphene oxides is easily tuned by the external electric field and their optoelectronic properties show a notable oxygen-site dependence.

Abstract
The density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT methods have been used to investigate the persulfurated coronene (PSC) and its chalcogenide analogues (POC and PSeC), derived from the substitution of sulfur, oxygen, and selenium for all hydrogen atoms in coronene, respectively. The presence of peripheral S-S in PSC results in a σ-type lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and the dark low-lying states (S1 ∼ S15). The peripheral S-S bond is responsible for its electron capture, which maintains a planar configuration of the singly and doubly negative-charged PSC. POC is predicted to have the most stable saddle-shaped structure with the C═O group, and its bowl-shaped isomer with the O-O moiety is less stable by 279.2 kcal/mol energetically. PSeC has similar electronic and structural features with PSC, but its dimer is predicted to have much better hole mobility, compared to PSC. The present results indicate that the chalcogenide substitution at the periphery of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons may remarkably change their electronic and spectroscopic properties as well as the carrier transport behavior of their molecular materials.

Abstract
Energy-level alignment at organic-metal interfaces plays a crucial role for the performance of organic electronic devices. However, reliable models to predict energetics at strongly coupled interfaces are still lacking. We elucidate contact formation of 1,2,5,6,9,10-coronenehexone (COHON) to the (1 1 1)-surfaces of coinage metals by means of ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the x-ray standing wave technique, and density functional theory calculations. While for low COHON thicknesses, the work-functions of the systems vary considerably, for thicker organic films Fermi-level pinning leads to identical work functions of 5.2 eV for all COHON-covered metals irrespective of the pristine substrate work function and the interfacial interaction strength.

Abstract
A series of benzo[ghi]perylene (Bp) and coronene (Cor) derivatives substituted with electron-withdrawing methoxycarbonyl (COOMe) or electron-donating methoxyl (MeO) groups was synthesized. The electrochemical, spectroscopic, and photophysical properties of these compounds were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy, and quantum-yield measurements. Introduction of suitable substituents onto the aromatic rings enabled control of electrochemical and spectroscopic behavior. Examination of excited-state dynamics revealed that fluorescence quantum yields increased with increasing number of COOMe groups in both Bp and Cor derivatives, consistent with the findings of DFT calculations. Single-crystal analysis allowed the performance of field-effect transistors containing single crystals of the derivatives to be rationalized.

Abstract
Three derivatives of 4,7-substituted [2.2.2]paracyclophane-trienes were synthesized and used in ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), resulting in well-soluble poly(para-phenylenevinylene)s (PPV). The paracyclophane-trienes were prepared using an iterative buildup of a phenylene-ethynylene backbone, followed by a cis selective Grignard reduction and an intramolecular McMurry reaction. The monomers were applied in ROMP to result in well-soluble PPV derivatives with an unusual substituent pattern. The PPVs were spin-coated into amorphous, highly fluorescent films. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to synthesize 4,7-substituted [2.2.2]paracyclophane-trienes and use them as ROMP monomers.
