Abstract
Phthalazine can behave as a diene in Diels-Alder (DA) cycloadditions, typically at the pyridazine ring, however, its application is somewhat limited because these reactions usually require harsh conditions or sophisticated catalysts. As an unconventional example, phthalazine was reported to undergo cycloaddition with the [PCO]- anion without any catalyst. In this computational study, we scrutinise the mechanism of the DA reactions between phthalazine and the so far known [ECX]- (E: P, As; X: O, S, Se) anions as dienophiles. In principle, the attack of an [ECX]- anion may occur at two different sites of phthalazine, either at the benzene or the pyridazine ring, and both of these possible reaction channels were juxtaposed on the basis of energetic aspects. In all of the investigated cases, the analysis of the energy profiles reveals a clear regioselectivity that favours the attack at the pyridazine ring. As a result, so far unprecedented 2-pnictanaphth-3-olate analogues seem achievable as final products. Comparing the characteristics of these pathways allowed us to clarify the source of this regioselectivity: The pyridazine ring of phthalazine exhibits lower aromaticity than the benzene subring; therefore, in the DA step, the former ring shows a higher affinity toward a dienophile than the latter, leading to lower activation barriers. To further map the electronic and structural features of the cycloaddition steps, the local interactions evolving in the transition states were analysed and compared using global and local descriptors. In most aspects, the characteristics of both pathways were found to be rather similar, in contrast to the markedly differing activation barriers on the two routes.

Abstract
Even at the end of the twentieth century, the view of the one-step [4+2] cycloaddition (Diels-Alder) reaction mechanism was widely accepted as the only possible one, regardless of the nature of the reaction components. Much has changed in the way these reactions are perceived since then. In particular, multi-step mechanisms with zwitterionic or diradical intermediates have been proposed for a number of processes. This review provided a critical analysis of such cases.

Abstract
1,3-Dipolar dearomatizing cycloadditions between a non-stabilized azomethine ylide and 3-cyanoindoles or benzofuran afford the corresponding 3D-heterocycles bearing a quaternary carbon centre at the ring junction. While 6 equivalents of ylide precursor 1 are required for full conversion in a classical flask, working under flow conditions limits the excess (3 equiv., tR = 1 min) and leads to a cleaner process, affording cycloadducts that are easier to isolate.

Abstract
A series of dispiro[indoline-3,2'-pyrrolidine-3',3″-indolines] was synthesized via a multicomponent polar [3 + 2] cycloaddition (32CA) reaction of isatin derivatives, sarcosine and (E)-3-(2-oxo-2-(pyren-1-yl)ethylidene)indolin-2-one derivatives. The regio- and stereochemistries of the cycloadducts were established on the basis of one-dimensional (1D) (1H-, 13C-, 13C-CRAPT NMR) and two-dimensional (2D) homonuclear and heteronuclear correlation NMR spectrometry experiments (1H-1H gDQFCOSY, 13C-1H-HSQCAD, 13C-1H-HMBCAD, 1H-1H-ROESYAD). The molecular mechanism and regio- and stereoselectivities of the cycloaddition (CA) reaction have been investigated utilizing a density functional theory (DFT) method and were thoroughly explained based on the transition-state stabilities and global/local electrophilicity/nucleophilicity reactivity indices of the reactants.

Abstract
Rolf Huisgen explored the Diels-Alder reactions of 1,3,5-cycloheptatriene (CHT) and cyclooctatetraene (COT) with the dienophiles maleic anhydride and 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione (PTAD) to determine the kinetics and mechanisms of various electrocyclizations and Diels-Alder reactions. These reactions have been examined with density functional theory. Modern computational chemistry has provided information not previously available by experiment. Transition states for all the reactions have been identified, and their Gibbs energies are used to explain the experimental reactivities. Zwitterionic intermediates were not found in the [4+2] cycloadditions of both CHT or COT with PTAD and are thus not involved in these reactions. [2+2+2] cycloadditions, as an alternative path to the Diels-Alder products, are highly disfavored. Rapid double nitrogen inversion was found for the cycloaddition products with PTAD.

Abstract
The regio- and stereochemical polar [3 + 2] cycloaddition of azomethine ylides, which were generated in situ by the reaction of isatin and sarcosine or benzylamine, with (E)-3-aryl-1-(pyren-1-yl)prop-2-en-1-ones as dipolarophiles, was studied using experimental and theoretical methods. The chemical structures and relative configurations of all products have been fully established by 1D and 2D homonuclear and heteronuclear correlation NMR spectrometry. The effects of the electronic and steric factors of the reactions were discussed. The photophysical properties of the synthesized spiro[indoline-3,2'-pyrrolidin]-2-ones and 5'-phenyl-spiro[indoline-3,2'-pyrrolidin]-2-ones were studied. The mechanism of the reactions was investigated using global and local reactivity indices and frontier molecular orbital (FMO) analysis at the B3LYP/6-31G level of theory. The relationship between the electrophilicity index ω of the dipolarophiles and the Hammett constant σ p has been studied. The theoretical scale of reactivity correctly explains the electrophilic activation/deactivation effects promoted by electron-withdrawing and electron-releasing substituents in the para-position of the dipolarophiles.

Abstract
An efficient and alternative synthesis of exo-imidazolidin-2-one dienes is described. A condensation reaction was carried out with bis-imino derivatives, diacetyl, and triphosgene, affording symmetrically N, N-disubstituted dienes. The use of alkyl methyl α-diketones led to the formation of nonsymmetrical dienes, which underwent isomerization to provide more stable inner-outer-ring dienes under Lewis acid conditions. Evaluation was made of the reactivity as well as regio- and stereoselectivity of these dienes in Diels-Alder reactions. They proved to be highly reactive and selective. DFT calculations of the transition states accounted for their behavior.

Abstract
The cycloaddition reaction between 2,3‑dimethylbuta-1,3-diene and methylacrylate proceeds by the second order kinetics. The rate constants increase with the increase in the excess of one of the reactants. The change in the effective rate constants is described by the Michaelis–Menten equation indicating that the reaction proceeds through the initial equilibrium stage of formation of a molecular complex stabilized by van der Waals interaction which then transforms into the product. The limiting stage of the reaction is established and its mechanism is suggested.

Abstract
Abstract B3LYP/6-31++G(d) calculations indicated that the reaction of (2E)-3-phenyl-2-nitroprop-2-enenitrile with cyclopentadiene catalyzed by cations of 1,3-dialkylimidazolium ionic liquid shall not take place according to the classical scheme of one-step [2+4] Diels–Alder cycloaddition. Along the path finally leading to bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-ene (norbornene) with a nitro group in endo orientation, the process of bicarbocyclic skeleton formation shall take place according to the domino mechanism, via [2+4] heterocycloadduct. On the other hand, along the path leading finally to bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-ene with a nitro group in exo orientation, acyclic adduct with a zwitterionic nature is formed in the first reaction, which undergoes cyclisation next in the second step of the reaction. Abstract
We have employed hybrid DFT and SCS-MP2 calculations at the SMD-PCM-6-311++G(2d,2p)//6-31+G(d) level to investigate the relationship between three possible channels for forming a Diels-Alder adduct from a highly nucleophilic diene and moderately to highly electrophilic dienophiles. We discuss geometries optimized using the B3LYP and M06-2X functionals with the 6-31+(d) basis set. The transition states and intermediates are characterized on the basis of geometric and electronic properties, and we also address the possibility of predicting detectability of a zwitterionic intermediate based on its relative stability. Our results show that a conventional Diels-Alder transition state conformation yields intermediates in all four investigated cases, but that these are too short-lived to be detected experimentally for the less activated reactants. The stepwise trans pathway, beginning with a conjugate addition-like transition state, becomes increasingly competitive with more activated reactants and is indeed favored for the most electrophilic dienophiles. Addition of a trans diene leads to a dead-end as the trans intermediates have insurmountable rotation barriers that prohibit formation of the second bond, unless another, heterocyclic intermediate is formed. We also show that introduction of a hydrogen bond donating catalyst favors a stepwise pathway even for less activated dienophiles.

Abstract
ABSTRACT The electrophilicity of (E)-2-aryl-1-cyano-1-nitroethenes is not sufficient to induce a zwitterionic course of their [4+2] cycloaddition to cyclopentadiene. The one-step mechanism of these reactions is indicated by the activation parameters, and the substituent and solvent effects on the reaction. GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT
