Abstract
![]()
The
reaction of mid to late lanthanide ions with the N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-bis(2-hydroxy-3-formyl-5-bromobenzyl)ethylene-diamine organic
ligand and monolacunary Keggin type [α-SiW11O39]8– anion affords a series of isostructural
compounds, namely, K5[LnIII(α-SiW11O39)(C20H22Br2N2O4)]·14H2O (1-Ln, Ln = Sm to Lu). The molecular structure of these sandwich-type
complexes is formed by the LnIII ion in a biaugmented trigonal
prismatic geometry, which occupies the external O4 site
of the organic ligand and the vacant site of the lacunary polyoxometalate
(POM) unit. The empty N2O2 coordination site
of the organic ligand allows its unprecedented folding, which displays
a relative perpendicular arrangement of aromatic groups. Weak Br···Br
and π–π interactions established between adjacent
molecular units govern the crystal packing, which results in the formation
of assemblies containing six hybrid species assembled in a chairlike
conformation. 1-Gd and 1-Yb display slow
relaxation of the magnetization after the application of an external
magnetic field with maxima in the out-of-phase magnetic susceptibility
plots below ∼5–6 K, which is ascribed to the presence
of various relaxation mechanisms. Moreover, photoluminescent emission
is sensitized for 1-Sm and 1-Eu in the visible
region and 1-Er and 1-Yb in the NIR. In
contrast, the quenching of metal-centered luminescence in the 1-Tb derivative has been attributed to the out-of-pocket coordination
mode of the lanthanide center within the POM fragment. It is demonstrated
that the 1-Yb dual magneto-luminescent material represents
the first lanthanide-containing POM reported to date with simultaneous
slow magnetic relaxation and NIR emission. Solution stability of the
hybrid molecular species in water is also confirmed by ESI-mass spectrometry
experiments carried out for 1-Tb and 1-Tm. A series of solution stable, molecular
polyoxometalate hybrids,
namely, [α-SiW11O39LnIII(C20H22N2Br2O4)]5− (LnIII = Sm to Lu) have been synthesized
from the combination of mid-to-late lanthanides, lacunary Keggin-type
anions, and a compartmental organic ligand. Metal-centered luminescence
in both the visible and NIR region as well as slow relaxation of magnetization
was found for different members of this family, including the Yb derivative,
which represents the first POM-based system with slow magnetic relaxation
and sensitized emission in the NIR region.

Abstract
A series of benzoate-decorated lanthanide (Ln)-containing tetrameric Dawson-type phosphotungstates [N(CH3)4]6H20[{(P2W17O61)Ln(H2O)3Ln(C6H5COO)(H2O)6]}{[(P2W17O61)Ln(H2O)3}]2Cl2·98H2O [Ln = Sm (1), Eu (2), and Gd (3)] were made using a facile one-step assembly strategy and characterized by several techniques. Notably, the Ln-containing tetrameric Dawson-type polyoxoanions [{(P2W17O61)Ln(H2O)3Ln(C6H5COO)(H2O)6]}{[(P2W17O61)Ln(H2O)3}]224- are all established by four monolacunary Dawson-type [P2W17O61]10- segments, encapsulating a Ln3+ ion with two benzoates coordinating to the Ln3+ ions. 1-3 exhibit reversible photochromism, which can change from intrinsic white to blue for 6 min upon UV irradiation, and their colors gradually recover for 30 h in the dark. The solid-state photoluminescence spectra of 1 and 2 display characteristic emissions of Ln components based on 4f-4f transitions. Time-resolved emission spectra of 1 and 2 were also measured to authenticate the energy transfer from the phosphotungstate and organic chromophores to Eu3+. In particular, 1 shows an effectively switchable luminescence behavior induced by its fast photochromism.

Abstract
A novel tetrahedral μ-AsO4-bridging hexadecanuclear Ni-substituted silicotungstate (ST) Na21H10[(AsO4){Ni8(OH)6(H2O)2(CO3)2(A-α-SiW9O34)2}2]·60H2O (1) was made by the reactions of trivacant [A-α-SiW9O34]10- ({SiW9}) units with Ni2+ cations and Na3AsO4·12H2O and characterized by IR spectrometry, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). 1 contains a novel polyoxoanion [(AsO4){Ni8(OH)6(H2O)2(CO3)2(A-α-SiW9O34)2}2]31- built by four trivacant Keggin [A-α-SiW9O34]10- fragments linked through an unprecedented [(AsO4){Ni8(OH)6(H2O)2(CO3)2}2]9+ cluster, where the tetrahedral AsO4 acts as an exclusively μ2-bridging unit to link multiple Ni centers; such a connection mode appears for the first time in polyoxometalate chemistry. Furthermore, the electrochemical and catalytic oxidation properties of compound 1 have been investigated.

Abstract
We report on the synthesis and structural characterization of two series of lanthanide-containing 22-tungsto-2-germanates. The first series corresponds to a family of polyanions with the formula [Ln(β2-GeW11O39)2]13- (LnIII = La (1), Ce (2), Pr (3), Nd (4), Sm (5), Gd (6), Dy (7)), and the second series corresponds to a family with the formula [Ln(β2-GeW11O39)(α-GeW11O39)]13- (LnIII = Ho (8), Er (9), Tm (10)). All compounds were characterized in the solid state by single-crystal and powder XRD, IR, TGA, and SQUID magnetometry. The polyanions were synthesized in aqueous medium by direct reaction of the monolacunary [β2-GeW11O39]8- POM precursor with the corresponding lanthanide salts. The structure of the polyanions consists of an 8-coordinated lanthanide ion in a square-antiprismatic geometry, which is sandwiched either between two [β2-GeW11O39]8- units for 1-7 or between a [β2-GeW11O39]8- and a [α-GeW11O39]8- unit for 8-10. Furthermore, the effect of the central paramagnetic lanthanide ion on the magnetic behavior of the polyanions was investigated, with the erbium-derivative [Er(β2-GeW11O39)(α-GeW11O39)]13- (9) showing single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior.

Abstract
Two monolanthanide-containing polyanions based on monolacunary Keggin germanotungstates [Ln(H2O) n GeW11O39]5- (Ln = Dy, Er, n = 4,3) have been synthesized in simple one-pot synthetic procedure and compositionally characterized in solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and elemental analysis. Electronic absorption and emission spectra of the title compounds in solution were also studied. The [DyIII(H2O)4GeW11O39]5- Keggin POM exhibits a slow relaxation of magnetization. The cyclic voltammetry measurements and mass spectrometry were carried out to check the stability of the compounds in solution. Both polyanions prove efficient in the electrocatalytic reduction of nitrite. To our knowledge, this observation establishes the first example of electrocatalysis of nitrite reduction by all inorganic monolanthanide-containing germanotungstates family.

Abstract
White light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) are of scientific significance in terms of their wide applications, and few uminescent materials based on white-light-emitting polyoxometalate (POM) derivatives have been reported till now. Herein, a series of organic chromophores modified POM derivatives [N(CH3)4]3K2Ln(C7H5O2)(H2O)2(α-PW11O39)]·11H2O (Ln3+ = Eu3+ (1), Tb3+ (2), Tm3+ (3), Lu3+ (4)) and multicenter-Ln analogues [N(CH3)4]3K2EuxTbyTm1-x-y(C7H5O2)(H2O)2(α-PW11O39)·11H2O (5-11) were synthesized successfully and were characterized by various physico-chemical analysis. The investigations indicate the white-light-emitting behavior can be well tuned by adjusting the molar ratio of Eu3+/Tb3+/Tm3+ = 0.06:0.10:0.84 in 9. The energy transfer process from organic benzoic and POM ligands to Eu3+, Tb3+ and Tm3+ emitting centers were detected through time-resolved emission spectroscopy (TRES) and the comparison of excitation of single-, double-, treble-Ln3+ mixed, indicating the energy can transfer from the photoexcitation O → M LMCT state of POM components and π → π* transition of organic ligand to sensitize the emissions of Ln3+ ions via intramolecular energy transition mechanism. The energy transfer between Eu3+ and Tb3+, Tm3+ and Eu3+, Tm3+ and Tb3+ ions also have been recorded and carefully studied by TRES and variations of Tm3+ luminescence lifetime in this context, and the results show a low-effectively process of energy transfer between Tm3+/Eu3+, Tm3+/Tb3+ ions and a relatively good energy transfer efficiency between Eu3+/Tb3+ ions.

Abstract
The reaction of mid-lanthanide (Ln) ions with the preformed {Se6W39} precursor under reasonably acidic aqueous conditions in the presence of organic amine cations results in an unprecedented nanoscale lanthanide-functionalized polyoxotungstate family, which are rare examples of mid-lanthanide-containing selenotungstates. (C4H10NO)9Na3[Dy3Se3.5W30O107.5(H2O)10]·22H2O (1) and (NH4)3(C2H8N)Na2[Dy4Se6W38O132(H2O)26(OH)6]·18H2O (2) reveal a trimeric Keggin assembly and a cyclic {Se6W38}-based chain, respectively, whereas (NH4)4Na8[Gd4Se6W48O166(H2O)20(OH)4]·21H2O (3) and (NH4)9(C2H8N)4Na5[Ln6Se6W58O202(H2O)20(OH)4]·58H2O (4; Ln = Gd, Tb, or Dy) are a few examples of polyoxometalates consisting of both classical Keggin and Wells-Dawson building blocks, and (NH4)4(C2H8N)5Na13[Ln4Se8W56O196(H2O)x(OH)10]·40H2O (5; Ln = Gd, Tb, or Dy; x = 12 for Gd and Tb and 10 for Dy) features the largest "pure" Wells-Dawson selenotungstate {Se8W56} bearing a length of 3.73 nm. A library of Se-templated species involving the first reported Keggin {α-SeW8} and Wells-Dawson {α-Se2W16} building blocks as well as some decisive assembly factors during the synthesis is responsible for these architectures. All of the compounds were structurally characterized in the solid and solution by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR, thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Magnetic properties indicate that 1 and 4-Dy show probable single-molecule-magnet behavior with obvious frequency dependence, whereas 3 and 4-Gd present the antiferromagnetic interactions between the GdIII centers.

Abstract
A series of 14 isostructural [Cu(cyclam)]2[{Cu(cyclam)}4{(α-GeW11O39)Ln(H2O)(OAc)}2]·18H2O (1-Ln, where Ln = La-Lu; cyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) polyoxometalate-based hybrids reported herein represent (i) the first example of a two-dimensional covalent hybrid lattice involving the [{(α-XW11O39)Ln(H2O)(OAc)}2] n- archetype and (ii) the first structural characterization of such a dimeric polyoxotungste for Ln = La and Pr as well as for the combination of X = Ge and Ln = Ce, Nd, Sm, or Lu. Compounds 1-Ln have been characterized by elemental analyses, infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis, and their thermostructural behavior has been monitored by powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The title compounds undergo two single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations triggered by thermal dehydration leading to the [{Cu(cyclam)}6{(α-GeW11O39)Ln(H2O)(OAc)}2]·4H2O intermediate (2-Ln, where Ln = Eu or Er) and [Cu(cyclam)]0.5[{Cu(cyclam)}5.5{(α-GeW11O39)Ln(OAc)}2] (3-Ln, where Ln = Ce or Eu) final anhydrous phases, the latter evidencing a coordinatively unsaturated derivative of the dimeric archetype for the first time. These transitions involve formation and disruption of Cu-OPOM bonds that result in different {Cu(cyclam)}2+ moieties grafting onto and being released from Keggin surfaces, which reduces the dimensionality of 1-Ln to one-dimensional covalent assemblies for 2-Ln and 3-Ln. While all 3-Ln phases rehydrate fully upon exposure to air for 24 h, the kinetics governing the crystal transitions back toward 1-Ln through 2-Ln depend on the nature of Ln. Under ambient moisture, the anhydrous structures fully revert back to the parent framework for Ln = La-Sm, while the samples containing Eu to Lu afford mixtures of 1-Ln and 2-Ln and require immersion in water for the structural reversion to reach completion. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses of the rehydrated 1R-Ln samples (Ln = Ce, Eu, and Er) support these observations.

Abstract
Three rare-earth containing docosatungstates Na3H2[RE(H2O)4][RE(H2O)5]2[W22O74H2]·36H2O [RE=DyIII (1), HoIII (2), YIII (3)] have been synthesized by reaction of Na2WO4·2H2O, dimethylamine hydrochloride (DMAHC) and RE(NO3)3·6H2O in the aqueous solution and characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectra, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 1-3 are isomorphous and each molecular unit consists of a S-shaped docosatungstate [W22O74H2]14- polyoxoanion with two supporting [RE(H2O)5]3+ cations and one disordered [RE(H2O)4]3+ cation. The [W22O74H2]14- polyoxoanion can be viewed as combination of two hendecatungstate [W11O38H]9- subunits in the staggered fashion by sharing two μ2-O atoms. The TG curves of 1-3 reveal the one-step weight loss between 25°C to 700°C. Moreover, both 1 and 2 demonstrate the characteristic luminescence emission behaviors of the corresponding RE3+ ions and their lifetime decay curves can be well fitted to the double exponential function. In addition, the CIE chromaticity coordinates of 1 and 2 have been obtained based on their corresponding emission spectra, and their dominant wavelengths and color purities have been also calculated.

Abstract
We chose a Sm-containing sandwich-type tungstophosphate K3Cs8[Sm(PW11O39)2]·10H2O (SmPW11) as a molecular dyad, which contains photoluminescence and electrochromism components in a skeletal structure, and investigated its electrofluorochromic performance both in solution and in composite films. First, the electrochemical activity and luminescence property of SmPW11 were studied in different pH solutions to determine the optimal pH solution medium; and then, the electrofluorochromic performance of SmPW11 was investigated under the optimized pH solution medium. Subsequently, the composite films containing SmPW11 were prepared on quartz substrates and conductive ITO substrates through a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly method, using PDDA and PEI as molecular linkers. Characterization methods of the composite films include UV-vis spectra, fluorescence spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV), bulk electrolysis with coulometry, chronoamperometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Finally, in situ UV-vis and fluorescence spectroelectrochemical systems were used to research electrofluorochromic properties for the composite films under electrochemical modulation. The results indicate that the composite films display not only orange luminescence emission but also reversible orange luminescence switching behaviors manipulated by the redox process of tungstophosphate species PW11 via the energy transfer between the orange luminescence component Sm and electroreduced species of tungstophosphate PW11.

Abstract
A new class of hexameric Ln12 -containing 60-tungstogermanates, [Na(H2 O)6 ⊂Eu12 (OH)12 (H2 O)18 Ge2 (GeW10 O38 )6 ](39-) (Eu12 ), [Na(H2 O)6 ⊂Gd12 (OH)6 (H2 O)24 Ge(GeW10 O38 )6 ](37-) (Gd12 ), and [(H2 O)6 ⊂Dy12 (H2 O)24 (GeW10 O38 )6 ](36-) (Dy12 ), comprising six di-Ln-embedded {β(4,11)-GeW10 } subunits was prepared by reaction of [α-GeW9 O34 ](10-) with Ln(III) ions in weakly acidic (pH 5) aqueous medium. Depending on the size of the Ln(III) ion, the assemblies feature selective capture of two (for Eu12 ), one (for Gd12 ), or zero (for Dy12 ) extra Ge(IV) ions. The selective encapsulation of a cationic sodium hexaaqua complex [Na(H2 O)6 ](+) was observed for Eu12 and Gd12 , whereas Dy12 incorporates a neutral, distorted-octahedral (H2 O)6 cluster. The three compounds were characterized by single-crystal XRD, ESI-MS, photoluminescence, and magnetic studies. Dy12 was shown to be a single-molecule magnet.
