A nested spin structure and single molecule magnet behaviour in an Fe8Dy12 heterometallic cyclic coordination cluster

The 20-nuclearity compound [Fe8Dy12(tea)8(teaH)12(NO3)12]·8MeCN (where teaH3 = triethanolamine) was synthesised and characterised through single crystal X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. The shape of the magnetic hysteresis in the microSQUID measurements was rationalised using the MAGELLAN program.

An Effectively Uncoupled Gd8 Cluster Formed through Fixation of Atmospheric CO2 Showing Excellent Magnetocaloric Properties

The [Gd8(opch)8(CO3)4(H2O)8]·4H2O·10MeCN coordination cluster (1) crystallises in P1¯. The Gd8 core is held together by four bridging carbonates derived from atmospheric CO2 as well as the carboxyhydrazonyl oxygens of the 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidenepyrazine-2-carbohydrazide (H2opch) Schiff base ligands. The magnetic measurements show that the GdIII ions are effectively uncoupled as seen from the low Weiss constant of 0.05 K needed to fit the inverse susceptibility to the Curie-Weiss law. Furthermore, the magnetisation data are consistent with the Brillouin function for eight independent GdIII ions. These features lead to a magnetocaloric effect with a high efficiency which is 89% of the theoretical maximum value.

A nickel(II) complex with an unsymmetrical tetra-dentate chelating ligand derived from pyridine-2,6-dicarbaldehyde and 2-amino-thio-phenol

[(2-{[6-(1,3-Benzo-thia-zol-2-yl)pyridin-2-yl]carbonyl-aza-nid-yl}phen-yl)sulf-anido]nickel(II), [Ni(C19H11N3OS2)], crystallizes in the centrosymmetric monoclinic space group P21/n with one mol-ecule in the asymmetric unit. The expected ligand, a bis-Schiff base derived from pyridine-2,6-dicarbaldehyde and 2-amino-thio-phenol, had modified in situ in a both unexpected and unsymmetrical fashion. One arm had cyclized to form a benzo[d]thia-zol-2-yl functionality, while the imine linkage of the second arm had oxidized to an amide group. The geometry about the central NiII atom is distorted square-planar N3S. The mol-ecules form supra-molecular face-to-face dimers via rather strong π-π stacking inter-actions, with these dimers then linked into chains via pairwise C-H⋯O inter-actions.

Fe-Gd Ferromagnetic Cyclic Coordination Cluster [FeIII4GdIII4(teaH)8(N3)8(H2O)] with Magnetic Anisotropy─Theory and Experiment

The synthesis, structural, and magnetic characterization of [Fe^III₄Ln^III₄(teaH)₈(N₃)₈(H₂O)] (Ln = Gd and Y) and the previously reported isostructural Dy analogue are discussed. The commonly held belief that both Fe^III and Gd^III can be regarded as isotropic ions is shown to be an oversimplification. This conclusion is derived from the magnetic data for the Y^III analogue in terms of the zero-field splitting seen for Fe^III and from the fact that the magnetic data for the new Gd^III analogue can only be fit employing an additional anisotropy term for the Gd^III ions. Furthermore, the Fe₄Gd₄ ring shows slow relaxation of magnetization. Our analysis of the experimental magnetic data employs both density functional theory as well as the finite-temperature Lanczos method which finally enables us to provide an almost perfect fit of magnetocaloric properties.

Breaking Symmetry Relaxes Structural and Magnetic Restraints, Suppressing QTM in Enantiopure Butterfly Fe2 Dy2 SMMs*

The {Fe2 Dy2 } butterfly systems can show single molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour, the nature of which depends on details of the electronic structure, as previously demonstrated for the [Fe2 Dy2 (μ3 -OH)2 (Me-teaH)2 (O2 CPh)6 ] compound, where the [N,N-bis-(2-hydroxyethyl)-amino]-2-propanol (Me-teaH3 ) ligand is usually used in its racemic form. Here, we describe the consequences for the SMM properties by using enantiopure versions of this ligand and present the first homochiral 3d/4 f SMM, which could only be obtained for the S enantiomer of the ligand for [Fe2 Dy2 (μ3 -OH)2 (Me-teaH)2 (O2 CPh)6 ] since the R enantiomer underwent significant racemisation. To investigate this further, we prepared the [Fe2 Dy2 (μ3 -OH)2 (Me-teaH)2 (O2 CPh)4 (NO3 )2 ] version, which could be obtained as the RS-, R- and S-compounds. Remarkably, the enantiopure versions show enhanced slow relaxation of magnetisation. The use of the enantiomerically pure ligand suppresses QTM, leading to the conclusion that use of enantiopure ligands is a "gamechanger" by breaking the cluster symmetry and altering the intimate details of the coordination cluster's molecular structure.

Assisted Self-Assembly to Target Heterometallic Mn-Nd and Mn-Sm SMMs: Synthesis and Magnetic Characterisation of [Mn7 Ln3 (O)4 (OH)4 (mdea)3 (piv)9 (NO3 )3 ] (Ln=Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd)*

In an assisted self-assembly approach starting from the [Mn6 O2 (piv)10 (4-Me-py)2 (pivH)2 ] cluster a family of Mn-Ln compounds (Ln=Pr-Yb) was synthesised. The reaction of [Mn6 O2 (piv)10 (4-Me-py)2 (pivH)2 ] (1) with N-methyldiethanolamine (mdeaH2 ) and Ln(NO3 )3  ⋅ 6H2 O in MeCN generally yields two main structure types: for Ln=Tb-Yb a previously reported Mn5 Ln4 motif is obtained, whereas for Ln=Pr-Eu a series of Mn7 Ln3 clusters is obtained. Within this series the GdIII analogue represents a special case because it shows both structural types as well as a third Mn2 Ln2 inverse butterfly motif. Variation in reaction conditions allows access to different structure types across the whole series. This prompts further studies into the reaction mechanism of this cluster assisted self-assembly approach. For the Mn7 Ln3 analogues reported here variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements suggest that antiferromagnetic interactions between the spin carriers are dominant. Compounds incorporating Ln=NdIII (2), SmIII (3) and GdIII (5) display SMM behaviour. The slow relaxation of the magnetisation for these compounds was confirmed by ac measurements above 1.8 K.

Terminal Ligand and Packing Effects on Slow Relaxation in an Isostructural Set of [Dy(H2 dapp)X2 ]+ Single Molecule Magnets*

We report three structurally related single ion Dy compounds using the pentadentate ligand 2,6-bis((E)-1-(2-(pyridin-2-yl)-hydrazineylidene)ethyl)pyridine (H2 dapp) [Dy(H2 dapp)(NO3 )2 ]NO3 (1), [Dy(H2 dapp)(OAc)2 ]Cl (2) and [Dy(H2 dapp)(NO3 )2 ]Cl0.92 (NO3 )0.08 (3). The (H2 dapp) occupies a helical twisted pentagonal equatorial arrangement with two anionic ligands in the axial positions. Further influence on the electronic and magnetic structure is provided by a closely associated counterion interacting with the central N-H group of the (H2 dapp). The slow relaxation of the magnetisation shows that the anionic acetates give the greatest slowing down of the magnetisation reversal. Further influence on the relaxation properties of compounds1 and 2 is the presence of short nitrate-nitrate intermolecular ligand contact opening further lattice relaxation pathways.

Cyan-Emitting Cu(I) Complexes and Their Luminescent Metallopolymers

Copper complexes have shown great versatility and a wide application range across the natural and life sciences, with a particular promise as organic light-emitting diodes. In this work, four novel heteroleptic Cu(I) complexes were designed in order to allow their integration in advanced materials such as metallopolymers. We herein present the synthesis and the electrochemical and photophysical characterisation of these Cu(I) complexes, in combination with ab initio calculations. The complexes present a bright cyan emission (λem ~ 505 nm) in their solid state, both as powder and as blends in a polymer matrix. The successful synthesis of metallopolymers embedding two of the novel complexes is shown. These copolymers were also found to be luminescent and their photophysical properties were compared to those of their polymer blends. The chemical nature of the polymer backbone contributes significantly to the photoluminescence quantum yield, paving a route for the strategic design of novel luminescent Cu(I)-based polymeric materials.

A multifunctional use of bis(methylene)bis(5-bromo-2-hydroxyl salicyloylhydrazone): from metal sensing to ambient catalysis of A3 coupling reactions

The potential use of bis(methylene)bis(5-bromo-2-hydroxylsalicyloylhydrazone) as a multifunctional fluorescence sensor for Cu²⁺, Ni²⁺, Co²⁺ and Fe²⁺ ions was investigated. The optical behaviour shows an increase in an absorption band at 408 nm which can be ascribed to the d-d transition (UV-vis) of the metal ions and a concomitant decrease in fluorescence intensity at 507 nm. The crystallographic analysis shows the binding site of the sensor to two Cu²⁺ ions and confirms the stoichiometry of 1 : 2 (ligand to metal) which is in good agreement with a Job plot analysis. Furthermore the Cu²⁺-complex catalyses A3 coupling reactions at 1 mol% catalytic loading; chiral propargylamine derivatives were obtained in high yield after 24 h reaction time under ambient conditions.

The First Use of a ReX5 Synthon to Modulate FeIII Spin Crossover via Supramolecular Halogen⋅⋅⋅Halogen Interactions

We have added the {ReIV X5 }- (X=Br, Cl) synthon to a pocket-based ligand to provide supramolecular design using halogen⋅⋅⋅halogen interactions within an FeIII system that has the potential to undergo spin crossover (SCO). By removing the solvent from the crystal lattice, we "switch on" halogen⋅⋅⋅halogen interactions between neighboring molecules, providing a supramolecular cooperative pathway for SCO. Furthermore, changes to the halogen-based interaction allow us to modify the temperature and nature of the SCO event.

Inorganic Approach to Stabilizing Nanoscale Toroidicity in a Tetraicosanuclear Fe18Dy6 Single Molecule Magnet

Cyclic coordination clusters (CCCs) are proving to provide an extra dimension in terms of exotic magnetic behavior as a result of their finite but cyclized chain structures. The Fe₁₈Dy₆ CCC is a Single Molecule Magnet with the highest nuclearity among Ln containing clusters. The three isostructural compounds [Fe₁₈Ln₆(μ-OH)₆(ampd)₁₂(Hampd)₁₂(PhCO₂)₂₄](NO₃)₆·38MeCN for Ln = Dy^III (1), Lu^III (2), or Y^III (3), where H₂ampd = 2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-propanediol, are reported. These can be described in terms of the cyclization of six {Fe₃Ln(μOH)(ampd)₂(Hampd)₂(PhCO₂)₄}⁺ units with six nitrate counterions to give the neutral cluster. The overall structure consists of two giant Dy₃ triangles sandwiching a strongly antiferromagnetically coupled Fe₁₈ ring, leading to a toroidal arrangement of the anisotropy axis of the Dy ions, making this the biggest toroidal arrangement on a molecular level known so far.

The Influence of Halide Substituents on the Structural and Magnetic Properties of Fe6Dy3 Rings

We report the synthesis and magnetic properties of three new nine-membered Fe(III)-Dy(III) cyclic coordination clusters (CCCs), with a core motif of [Fe₆Dy₃(μ-OMe)₉(vanox)₆(X-benz)₆] where the benzoate ligands are substituted in the para-position with X = F (1), Cl (2), Br (3). Single crystal X-ray diffraction structure analyses show that for the smaller fluorine or chlorine substituents the resulting structures exhibit an isostructural Fe₆Dy₃ core, whilst the 4-bromobenzoate ligand leads to structural distortions which affect the dynamic magnetic behavior. The magnetic susceptibility and magnetization of 1-3 were investigated and show similar behavior in the dc (direct current) magnetic data. Additional ac (alternating current) magnetic measurements show that all compounds exhibit frequency-dependent and temperature-dependent signals in the in-phase and out-of-phase component of the susceptibility and can therefore be described as field-induced SMMs. The fluoro-substituted benzoate cluster 1 shows a magnetic behavior closely similar to that of the corresponding unsubstituted Fe₆Dy₃ cluster, with U_eff = 21.3 K within the Orbach process. By increasing the size of the substituent toward 4-chlorobenzoate within 2, an increase of the energy barrier to U_eff = 36.1 K was observed. While the energy barrier becomes higher from 1 to 2, highlighting that the introduction of different substituents on the benzoate ligand in the para-position has an impact on the magnetic properties, cluster 3 shows a significantly different SMM behavior where U_eff is reduced in the Orbach regime to only 4.9 K.

Di- and Tri-nuclear VIII and CrIII Complexes of Dipyridyltriazoles: Ligand Rearrangements, Mixed Valency and Ferromagnetic Coupling

The first dinuclear and trinuclear chromium(III) and dinuclear vanadium(III) complexes of N⁴-R-substituted-3,5-di(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole (Rdpt) ligands have been prepared by solvothermal complexations under inert atmospheres, and characterized. The reactions of Cr^III and V^III with adpt (R = amino) resulted in deamination of the ligand and yielded the dinuclear doubly-triazolate bridged complexes [V2III(dpt⁻)₂Cl₄] (1) and [Cr2III(dpt⁻)₂Cl₄] (2). In the case of the Cr^III complex 2 this bridging results in a rare example of ferromagnetic coupling for a dinuclear Cr^III compound. DFT studies confirm that in 2 the ferromagnetic coupling pathways dominate over the antiferromagnetic pathways, whereas in 1 the reverse occurs, consistent with the observed overall antiferromagnetic coupling in that case. It was also found that the use of different additives in the reaction allows the nuclearity of the Cr^III product to be manipulated, giving either the dinuclear system, or the first example of a trinuclear circular helicate for a Rdpt complex, [Cr3III(dpt)₃Cl₆]·1¾MeCN·¼DCM (3). Reaction of N⁴-pydpt (R = 4-pyridyl) with V^III led to an unusual shift of the pyridyl substituent from N⁴ to N¹ of the triazole, forming the ligand isomer N¹-pydpt, and giving a dinuclear doubly-triazole bridged complex, [V2III(N¹-pydpt)₂Cl₆]·2MeCN (4). Reaction with Cr^III results in loss of the 4-pyridyl ring and a mixture of the di- and trinuclear complexes, 2 and 3. Interestingly, partial oxidation of the V^III in dinuclear complex 4 to vanadyl V^IV=O was identified by crystallographic analysis of partially oxidized single crystals, [(V^IVO)_0.84(V^III)_1.16(N¹-pydpt)₂Cl_5.16]·0.84H₂O·1.16MeCN (5).

Exploring the Vibrational Side of Spin-Phonon Coupling in Single-Molecule Magnets via 161 Dy Nuclear Resonance Vibrational Spectroscopy

Synchrotron-based nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopy (NRVS) using the Mössbauer isotope 161 Dy has been employed for the first time to study the vibrational properties of a single-molecule magnet (SMM) incorporating DyIII , namely [Dy(Cy3 PO)2 (H2 O)5 ]Br3 ⋅2 (Cy3 PO)⋅2 H2 O ⋅2 EtOH. The experimental partial phonon density of states (pDOS), which includes all vibrational modes involving a displacement of the DyIII ion, was reproduced by means of simulations using density functional theory (DFT), enabling the assignment of all intramolecular vibrational modes. This study proves that 161 Dy NRVS is a powerful experimental tool with significant potential to help to clarify the role of phonons in SMMs.

Syntheses, Crystal Structure, Electrocatalytic, and Magnetic Properties of the Monolanthanide-Containing Germanotungstates [Ln(H2O) n GeW11O39]5- (Ln = Dy, Er, n = 4,3)

Two monolanthanide-containing polyanions based on monolacunary Keggin germanotungstates [Ln(H2O) n GeW11O39]5- (Ln = Dy, Er, n = 4,3) have been synthesized in simple one-pot synthetic procedure and compositionally characterized in solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and elemental analysis. Electronic absorption and emission spectra of the title compounds in solution were also studied. The [DyIII(H2O)4GeW11O39]5- Keggin POM exhibits a slow relaxation of magnetization. The cyclic voltammetry measurements and mass spectrometry were carried out to check the stability of the compounds in solution. Both polyanions prove efficient in the electrocatalytic reduction of nitrite. To our knowledge, this observation establishes the first example of electrocatalysis of nitrite reduction by all inorganic monolanthanide-containing germanotungstates family.

Multimodeling Approach to Ferromagnetic Spin-Wave Excitations in the High-Spin Cluster Mn18Sr Observed by Inelastic Neutron Scattering

The magnetism of the mixed-valence high-spin cluster [Mn₁₈SrO₈(N₃)₇Cl(MedhmpH)₁₂(MeCN)₆]Cl₂ (1) exhibiting intramolecular ferromagnetic interactions was studied using inelastic neutron scattering (INS), and reliable values for the exchange coupling constants were determined based on the quality of simultaneous fits to the INS and magnetic data. The challenge of the huge size of the Hilbert space (3 375 000) and many exchange coupling constants (7 assuming a C₃ symmetry) generally encountered in large spin clusters was resolved as follows: (a) The results of the restricted Hilbert space ferromagnetic cluster spin wave theory were compared to the experimental spectroscopic data. The observed INS transitions were thus assigned to spin wave excitations in a bounded ferromagnetic spin cluster and moreover could be visualized in a straightforward way based on this theory. (b) Simultaneously, Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations of the temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility with the same parameter set were compared to the experimental data. Application of state-of-the-art QMC algorithms, as available in the open source ALPS package, in ferromagnetic clusters avoids the full Hamiltonian diagonalization without sacrificing calculation accuracy of the magnetic susceptibility down to the lowest temperatures, which was crucial for the successful analysis. The combined fits revealed two exchange-coupling models with equally good overall agreement to the data. Our preferred model was inspired by magnetostructural correlations and is consistent with them. The model involves three different exchange interactions, one describing the interaction between the core Mn^III spins J_a = 14.3(1.0) K and two interactions linking the core and the peripheral Mn^II spins: J_b = 8.3(4) K and J₆ = 3.6(4) K. The use of open-source QMC software and our systematic approach to fitting multiple sets of data obtained by different experimental techniques are described in detail and are generally applicable for understanding large ferromagnetically coupled clusters.

Mechanism of magnetisation relaxation in {MIII2DyIII2} (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, Al) "Butterfly" complexes: how important are the transition metal ions here?

We describe the synthesis, characterisation and magnetic studies of four tetranuclear, isostructural "butterfly" heterometallic complexes: [MIII2LnIII2(μ3-OH)2(p-Me-PhCO2)6(L)2] (H2L = 2,2'-((pyridin-2-ylmethyl)azanediyl)bis(ethan-1-ol), M = Cr, Ln = Dy (1), Y (2), M = Mn, Ln = Dy (3), Y (4)), which extend our previous study on the analogous 5 {Fe2Dy2}, 6 {Fe2Y2} and 7 {Al2Dy2} compounds. We also present data on the yttrium diluted 7 {Al2Dy2}: 8 {Al2Dy0.18Y1.82}. Compounds dc and ac magnetic susceptibility data reveal single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour for complex 3 {Mn2Dy2}, in the absence of an external magnetic field, with an anisotropy barrier U eff of 19.2 K, while complex 1 {Cr2Dy2}, shows no ac signals even under applied dc field, indicating absence of SMM behaviour. The diluted sample 8 {Al2Dy0.18Y1.82} shows field induced SMM behaviour with an anisotropy barrier U eff of 69.3 K. Furthermore, the theoretical magnetic properties of [MIII2LnIII2(μ3-OH)2(p-Me-PhCO2)6(L)2] (M = Cr, 1 or Mn, 3) and their isostructural complexes: [MIII2DyIII2(μ3-OH)2(p-Me-PhCO2)6(L)2] (M = Fe, 5 or Al, 7) are discussed and compared. To understand the experimental observations for this family, DFT and ab initio CASSCF + RASSI-SO calculations were performed. The experimental and theoretical calculations suggest that altering the 3dIII ions can affect the single-ion properties and the nature and the magnitude of the 3dIII-3dIII, 3dIII-DyIII and DyIII-DyIII magnetic coupling, thus quenching the quantum tunneling of magnetisation (QTM) significantly, thereby improving the SMM properties within this motif. This is the first systematic study looking at variation and therefore role of trivalent transition metal ions, as well as the diamgnetic AlIII ion, on slow relaxation of magnetisation within a series of isostructural 3d-4f butterfly compounds.

Single Crystal Investigations Unravel the Magnetic Anisotropy of the "Square-In Square" Cr4Dy4 SMM Coordination Cluster

In the search for new single molecule magnets (SMM), i.e., molecular systems that can retain their magnetization without the need to apply an external magnetic field, a successful strategy is to associate 3d and 4f ions to form molecular coordination clusters. In order to efficiently design such systems, it is necessary to chemically project both the magnetic building blocks and the resultant interaction before the synthesis. Lanthanide ions can provide the required easy axis magnetic anisotropy that hampers magnetization reversal. In the rare examples of 3d/4f SMMs containing Cr^III ions, the latter turn out to act as quasi-isotropic anchors which can also interact via 3d-4f coupling to neighbouring Ln centres. This has been demonstrated in cases where the intramolecular exchange interactions mediated by Cr^III ions effectively reduce the efficiency of tunnelling without applied magnetic field. However, describing such high nuclearity systems remains challenging, from both experimental and theoretical perspectives, because the overall behaviour of the molecular cluster is heavily affected by the orientation of the individual anisotropy axes. These are in general non-collinear to each other. In this article, we combine single crystal SQUID and torque magnetometry studies of the octanuclear [Cr₄Dy₄(μ₃-OH)₄(μ-N₃)₄(mdea)₄(piv)₈]·3CH₂Cl₂ single molecule magnet (piv=pivalate and mdea=N-methyldiethanol amine). These experiments allowed us to probe the magnetic anisotropy of this complex which displays slow magnetization dynamics due to the peculiar arrangement of the easy-axis anisotropy on the Dy sites. New ab initio calculations considering the entire cluster are in agreement with our experimental results.

Synthesis, structure and electrochemical characterization of an isopolytungstate (W4O16) held by MnII anchors within a superlacunary crown heteropolyanion {P8W48}

The first example of an isopolyanion (W₄O₁₆) held by redox-active Mn^II anchors within an archetypal superlacunary heteropolyanion {P₈W₄₈}.

Tetranuclear Cu(ii)-chiral complexes: synthesis, characterization and biological activity

A pair of tetranuclear chiral Cu(ii)-Schiff-base complexes were synthesized using enantiomerically pure (S)-H₂L and (R)-H₂L ligands. These were characterised using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and CD spectroscopy and their biological activity tested.

A W-Shaped Ga-Dy-Dy-Dy-Ga Cluster: Synthesis, Characterization, and Magnetic Properties

A W-shaped {Ga-Dy-Dy-Dy-Ga} coordination cluster, [Ga₂ Dy₃ (L)₆ (MeO)₂ (MeOH)₃ ]⋅NO₃ ⋅7 MeOH (1) with H₂ L, (E)-2-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-benzylideneamino)phenol was synthesized, characterized, and the magnetic properties investigated. The magnetic measurements indicate that the compound shows single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior under zero dc field. This suggests that the combination of Ga^III ions and Dy^III ions (4 f) is a successful strategy to assemble SMM clusters. The combination of these metal ions also offers prospects in dual functionality therapeutics for medical applications.

Butterfly M2 IIIEr2 (MIII = Fe and Al) SMMs: Synthesis, Characterization, and Magnetic Properties

The reaction of N-(2-pyridylmethyl)iminodiethanol (H₂L, pmide), FeCl₂·4H₂O or AlCl₃·6H₂O with ErCl₃·6H₂O and p-Me-PhCO₂H in the ratio of 2:1:1:4 in the presence of Et₃N in MeOH and MeCN yielded compounds [Fe₂Er₂(μ₃-OH)₂(pmide)₂(p-Me-PhCO₂)₆]·2MeCN (1) and [Al₂Er₂(μ₃-OH)₂(pmide)₂(p-Me-PhCO₂)₆]·2MeCN (2). These two complexes are isostructural, possessing a planar butterfly motif with the Er^III ions in the wingtip positions. Both compounds show single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior. For the [Al₂Er₂] compound, the slow relaxation of the magnetization under zero applied direct current (dc) field does not show maxima, but the relaxation processes could be analyzed using an applied dc field of 1000 Oe. In-depth alternating current measurements under different dc fields on the [Fe₂Er₂] compound reveals that the Fe-Fe and Fe-Er interactions speed up the relaxation and decrease the energy barrier height of the SMM in comparison with the [Al₂Er₂] case.

Synthesis and Characterization of a Heterometallic Extended Architecture Based on a Manganese(II)-Substituted Sandwich-Type Polyoxotungstate

The reaction of [α-P₂W₁₅O₅₆]¹²⁻ with Mn^II and Dy^III in an aqueous basic solution led to the isolation of an all inorganic heterometallic aggregate Na₁₀(OH₂)₄₂[{Dy(H₂O)₆}₂Mn₄P₄W₃₀O₁₁₂(H₂O)₂]·17H₂O (Dy₂Mn₄-P₂W₁₅). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that Dy₂Mn₄-P₂W₁₅ crystallizes in the triclinic system with space group P1¯, and consists of a tetranuclear manganese(II)-substituted sandwich-type phosphotungstate [Mn₄(H₂O)₂(P₂W₁₅O₅₆)₂]¹⁶⁻ (Mn₄-P₂W₁₅), Na, and Dy^III cations. Compound Dy₂Mn₄-P₂W₁₅ exhibits a 1D ladder-like chain structure based on sandwich-type segments and dysprosium cations as linkers, which are further connected into a three-dimensional open framework by sodium cations. The title compound was structurally and compositionally characterized in solid state by single-crystal XRD, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric (TGA), and elemental analyses. Further, the absorption and emission electronic spectra in aqueous solutions of Dy₂Mn₄-P₂W₁₅ and Mn₄-P₂W₁₅ were studied. Also, magnetic properties were studied and compared with the magnetic behavior of [Mn₄(H₂O)₂(P₂W₁₅O₅₆)₂]¹⁶⁻.

Effect of ligand substitution on the SMM properties of three isostructural families of double-cubane Mn4Ln2 coordination clusters

Three isostructural Mn–Ln families consists of 22 complexes have been presented. Only 7, 15, and 22 for Tb, 8 and 16 for Dy, and 20 for Sm displayed slow magnetization relaxation.

A tetranuclear CuII2DyIII2 coordination cluster as a Suzuki (C–C) coupling reaction promoter

The air stable and high yielding tetranuclear coordination cluster [CuII2DyIII2L₄(NO₃)₂(CH₃CN)₂]·2(CH₃CN) promotes the Suzuki coupling reaction of phenylboronic acid with substituted aryl halides under environmentally benign conditions.

Field-Induced Co(II) Single-Ion Magnets with mer-Directing Ligands but Ambiguous Coordination Geometry

Three air-stable Co(II) mononuclear complexes with different aromatic substituents have been prepared and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The mononuclear complexes [Co(H₂L1)₂]·2THF (1), [Co(HL2)₂] (2), and [Co(H₂L3)₂]·CH₂Cl₂ (3) (where H₃L1, H₂L2, and H₃L3 represent 3-hydroxy-naphthalene-2-carboxylic acid (6-hydroxymethyl-pyridin-2-ylmethylene) hydrazide, nicotinic acid (6-hydroxymethyl-pyridin-2-ylmethylene) hydrazide, and 2-hydroxy-benzoic acid (6-hydroxymethyl-pyridin-2-ylmethylene) hydrazide, respectively) feature a distorted mer octahedral coordination geometry. Detailed magnetic studies of 1-3 have been conducted using direct and alternating current magnetic susceptibility data. Field-induced slow magnetic relaxation was observed for these three complexes. There are few examples of such behavior in (distorted) octahedral coordination geometry (OC) Co(II) mononuclear complexes with uniaxial anisotropy. Analysis of the six-coordinate Co(II) mononuclear single-ion magnets (SIMs) in the literature using the SHAPE program revealed that they all show what is best described as distorted trigonal prismatic (TRP) coordination geometry, and in general, these show negative D zero-field splitting (ZFS) values. On the other hand, all the Co(II) mononuclear complexes displaying what is best approximated as distorted octahedral (OC) coordination geometry show positive D values. In the new Co(II) mononuclear complexes we describe here, there is an ambiguity, since the rigid tridentate ligands confer what is best described for an octahedral complex as a mer coordination geometry, but the actual shape of the first coordination sphere is between octahedral and trigonal prismatic. The negative D values observed experimentally and supported by high-level electronic structure calculations are thus in line with a trigonal prismatic geometry. However, a consideration of the rhombicity as indicated by the E value of the ZFS in conjunction with the SHAPE analysis shows that in this case it is difficult to distinguish between the OC and TRP descriptions.

A Three-Pronged Attack To Investigate the Electronic Structure of a Family of Ferromagnetic Fe4Ln2 Cyclic Coordination Clusters: A Combined Magnetic Susceptibility, High-Field/High-Frequency Electron Paramagnetic Resonance, and 57Fe Mössbauer Study

We present the synthesis, structure, magnetic properties, as well as the Mössbauer and electron paramagnetic resonance studies of a ring-shaped [Fe^III₄Ln^III₂(Htea)₄(μ-N₃)₄(N₃)₃(piv)₃] (Ln = Y 1, Gd 2, Tb 3, Dy 4, Ho 5, Er, 6) coordination cluster. The Dy, Tb, and Ho analogues show blocking of the magnetization at low temperatures without applied fields. The anisotropy of the 3d ion and the exchange interaction between 3d and 4f ions in Fe₄Ln₂ complexes are unambiguously determined by high-field/high-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance measurements at low temperature. Ferromagnetic exchange interaction J_Fe-Ln is found which decreases upon variation of the Ln ions to larger atomic numbers. This dependence is similar to the behavior shown in the effective barrier values of complexes 3-5. Further information about the anisotropy of the Ln³⁺ ions was gathered with ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, and the combination of these methods provides detailed information regarding the electronic structure of these complexes.

A Redox-Switchable Germylene and its Ligating Properties in Selected Transition Metal Complexes

The synthesis, structure, and full characterization of a redox-switchable germylene based on a [3]ferrocenophane ligand arrangement, [Fc(NMes)₂ Ge] (4), is presented. The mesityl (Mes)-substituted title compound is readily available from Fc(NHMes)₂ (2) and Ge{N(SiMe₃ )₂ }₂ , or from the dilithiated, highly air- and moisture-sensitive compound Fc(NLiMes)₂ ⋅3 Et₂ O (3) and GeCl₂ . Cyclic voltammetry studies are provided for 4, confirming the above-mentioned view of a redox-switchable germylene metalloligand. Although several 1:1 Rh^I and Ir^I complexes of 4 (5-7) are cleanly formed in solution, all attempts to isolate them in pure form failed due to stability problems. However, crystalline solids of [Mo(κ¹ Ge-4)₂ (CO)₄ ] (8) and [W(κ¹ Ge-4)₂ (CO)₄ ] (9) were isolated and fully characterized by common spectroscopic techniques (8 by X-ray diffraction). DFT calculations were performed on a series of model compounds to elucidate a conceivable interplay between the metal atoms in neutral and cationic bimetallic complexes of the type [Rh(κ¹ E-qE)(CO)₂ Cl]^0/+ (qE=[Fc(NPh)₂ E] with E=C, Si, Ge). The bonding characteristics of the coordinated Fc-based metalloligands (qE/qE⁺ ) are strongly affected upon in silico oxidation of the calculated complexes. The calculated Tolman electronic parameter (TEP) significantly increases by approximately 20 cm^-1 (E=C) to 25 cm^-1 (E=Si, Ge) upon oxidation. The change in the ligand-donating abilities upon oxidation can mainly be attributed to Coulombic effects, whereas an orbital-based interaction appears to have only a minor influence.

The role of coordinated solvent on Co(ii) ions in tuning the single molecule magnet properties in a {CoII2DyIII2} system

The anisotropy of a single Dy^III can be steered through subtle changes in the coordination geometry of the Co^II ions in CoII2DyIII2 butterfly compounds resulting from changing the coordinated solvent molecule on the Co^II ion.

A switchable self-assembling and disassembling chiral system based on a porphyrin-substituted phenylalanine-phenylalanine motif

Artificial light-harvesting systems have until now not been able to self-assemble into structures with a large photon capture cross-section that upon a stimulus reversibly can switch into an inactive state. Here we describe a simple and robust FLFL-dipeptide construct to which a meso-tetraphenylporphyrin has been appended and which self-assembles to fibrils, platelets or nanospheres depending on the solvent composition. The fibrils, functioning as quenched antennas, give intense excitonic couplets in the electronic circular dichroism spectra which are mirror imaged if the unnatural FDFD-analogue is used. By slightly increasing the solvent polarity, these light-harvesting fibres disassemble to spherical structures with silent electronic circular dichroism spectra but which fluoresce. Upon further dilution with the nonpolar solvent, the intense Cotton effects are recovered, thus proving a reversible switching. A single crystal X-ray structure shows a head-to-head arrangement of porphyrins that explains both their excitonic coupling and quenched fluorescence.
