Abstract
Carbazoles are an important class of nitrogen-containing heterocycles found in diverse natural products, bioactive molecules, and functional materials. Their broader applications have driven extensive research into their synthesis and functionalization. Among various approaches, transition metal-catalyzed C-H activation has emerged as a powerful tool for direct functionalization, offering regioselectivity, efficiency, and sustainability. This review comprehensively summarizes advancements in transition metal-catalyzed C-H functionalization of carbazoles. Various catalytic systems employing palladium, ruthenium, rhodium, nickel, cobalt, copper, and iron have enabled alkylation, alkenylation, acylation, arylation, alkynylation, and heteroatom incorporation in carbazoles. These methodologies enabled late-stage diversification and have opened avenues for accessing structurally complex carbazole derivatives with tailored properties. The review aims to provide a comprehensive guide for researchers exploring carbazole functionalization via C-H activation, highlighting key mechanistic insights, scope, and emerging trends in this field.

Abstract
Methods enabling direct C-H alkylation of heterocycles are of fundamental importance in the late-stage modification of natural products, bioactive molecules, and medicinally relevant compounds. However, there is a scarcity of a general strategy for the direct C-H alkylation of a variety of heterocycles using commercially available alkyl surrogates. We report an operationally simple palladium-catalyzed direct C-H alkylation of heterocycles using alkyl halides under the visible light irradiation with good scalability and functional group tolerance. Our studies suggest that the photoinduced alkylation proceeds through a cascade of events comprising, site-selective alkyl radical addition, base-assisted deprotonation, and oxidation. A combination of experiments and computations was employed for the generalization of this strategy, which was successfully translated towards the modification of natural products and pharmaceuticals.

Abstract
Polycyclic heterocycles are the most common and critical structural motifs found in a variety of natural products, medicines, fertilizers, and advanced materials. Because of their widespread use in biologically active compounds and material chemistry, functionalised dibenzo heterocyclic compounds, especially dibenzofuran, dibenzothiophene, and carbazole derivatives, garnered much attention over time. Scientists are especially interested in elucidating more efficient techniques for developing these industrially essential compounds. Dibenzo-fused heterocycles can rapidly be synthesised using highly efficient transition metal-catalysed strategies as well as by economic metal-free reaction conditions. This review includes a detailed overview of the most recent significant synthetic techniques, both metal-catalysed and metal-free, to produce these industrially significant and medicinally important dibenzo-fused heterocycles.

Abstract
The synthesis of monofluorinated heterocyclic compounds by C-H activation combined with defluorination is useful. Studies on the reaction mechanism and selectivity have shown that these processes play a positive role in promoting the development of monofluorinated reactions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to investigate the mechanism and selectivity of Ru(II)-catalyzed 2-arylbenzimidazole with trifluoromethyl diazo. DFT calculations showed that C-H activation occurs through a concerted metalation/deprotonation (CMD) mechanism. After that, deprotonation and defluorinative cyclization are assisted by acetate and trifluoroethanol (TFE). Further mechanistic insights through noncovalent interaction (NCI) analysis were also obtained to elucidate the origin of the selectivity in the defluorination process.

Abstract
The directing group-assisted regioselective C-H activation of carbazoles and indolines is achieved via transition metal-catalyzed reactions. This C-H functionalization protocol provides a rapid approach to install diversely functionalized succinimide groups at the C-1 position of the carbazole moiety. In addition, this protocol demonstrates the intrinsic reactivity of indolines in providing C-2 succinimide-substituted indoles via cascade direct oxidation and C-H functionalization. This protocol also provides C-7 succinimide-substituted indolines under mild reaction conditions. The features of this reaction include a wide substrate scope and excellent regioselectivity for the installation of the succinimide moiety on biologically interesting molecules.

Abstract
Aryl trifluoromethyl diazomethanes 2-R (R=Ph, OMe, CF3 ) are readily decomposed by the (o-carboranyl)diphosphine gold(I) complex 1. The resulting α-CF3 substituted carbene complexes 3-R have been characterized by multi-nuclear NMR spectroscopy as well as X-ray crystallography (for 3-Ph). The bonding situation was thoroughly assessed by computational means, showing stabilization of the electrophilic carbene center by π-donation from the aryl substituent and backdonation from Au, as enhanced by the chelating P^P ligand. Reactivity studies under stoichiometric and catalytic conditions substantiate typical carbene-type behavior for 3-Ph.

Abstract
C-H functionalization has been emerging as a powerful method to establish carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. Many efforts have been devoted to transition-metal-catalyzed direct transformations of C-H bonds. Metal carbenes generated in situ from transition-metal compounds and diazo or its equivalents are usually applied as the transient reactive intermediates to furnish a catalytic cycle for new C-C and C-X bond formation. Using this strategy compounds from unactivated simple alkanes to complex molecules can be further functionalized or transformed to multi-functionalized compounds. In this area, transition-metal-catalyzed carbene insertion to C-H bonds has been paid continuous attention. Diverse catalyst design strategies, synthetic methods, and potential applications have been developed. This critical review will summarize the advance in transition-metal-catalyzed carbene insertion to C-H bonds dated up to July 2021, by the categories of C-H bonds from aliphatic C(sp3)-H, aryl (aromatic) C(sp2)-H, heteroaryl (heteroaromatic) C(sp2)-H bonds, alkenyl C(sp2)-H, and alkynyl C(sp)-H, as well as asymmetric carbene insertion to C-H bonds, and more coverage will be given to the recent work. Due to the rapid development of the C-H functionalization area, future directions in this topic are also discussed. This review will give the authors an overview of carbene insertion chemistry in C-H functionalization with focus on the catalytic systems and synthetic applications in C-C bond formation.

Abstract
A BF3·OEt2 catalyzed highly chemoselective formal CC double bond cleavage reaction of α,β-enones with diazoamides for the synthesis of 3-alkylated oxindoles is developed. Boron trifluoride etherate is found to be an effective catalyst for the chemoselective Cα-Cβ cleavage of enones to obtain 3-alkylated oxindoles. The product formation indicates a selective β-carbon elimination pathway of α,β-enones using the inexpensive BF3·OEt2 as a catalyst, transition metal-free conditions, an open-air environment, good functional tolerance and broad substrate scope. The synthetic utility of this protocol is highlighted by synthesizing spiro-indolooxiranes.

Abstract
A gold catalyzed formal intermolecular [2+3] cyclo-coupling of 1,3-enynes with phenols was developed to prepare dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with the addition of 2,6-dichloropyridine N-oxide, in which, a highly ortho-selective phenol SEAr functionalization was achieved by using 1,3-enynes as α-oxo vinyl gold carbenoid surrogates.

Abstract
Herein we describe a multiple C-H functionalization reaction of carbazole heterocycles with diazoalkanes. We show that gold catalysts play a distinct role in enabling a multiple C-H functionalization reaction to introduce up to six carbene fragments onto molecules containing multiple carbazole units or to link multiple carbazole units into a single molecule. A one-pot stepwise approach enables the introduction of two different carbene fragments to allow orthogonal deprotection and straightforward derivatization.

Abstract
A site-selective direct arylation reaction of carbazole and other N-heterocycles with diazo-naphthalen-2(1H)-ones has been developed. While Au(i)-NHC catalysts lead to selective C3-arylation, palladium acetate allows for selective N-H arylation, displaying complete site-selectivity each. To show the applicability of these arylation reactions, one-pot, two-fold diarylation reactions of carbazole were demonstrated.
