Regioselective Fluorination of Acenes: Tailoring of Molecular Electronic Levels and Solid State Properties

π-Expanded azaullazines: synthesis of quinolino-azaullazines by Povarov reaction and cycloisomerisation

Doping and extension of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by simple and efficient synthetic methods is of increased demand for the development of novel and improved organic electronics. Diarylindolizino[6,5,4,3-ija]quinolino[2,3-c][1,6]naphthyridines (quinolino-azaullazines) were prepared by combination of Pd catalyzed cross-coupling with Povarov and cycloisomerisation reactions. The products contain an electron-rich ullazine and an electron-poor quinoline moiety and show intramolecular charge transfer properties that can be tuned by the substitution pattern. The optical properties were studied experimentally and further elaborated by (TD)DFT calculations.

Synthesis, Structures, and Aggregation-Induced Emission Properties of Distyrylbenzene Derivatives Containing Fluorine Groups

Distyrylbenzene derivatives with substituents on the vinylene moieties have been studied due to interest in their optoelectronic properties. In this study, we focused on distyrylbenzene derivatives with monofluoroolefin structures, expecting intermolecular H-F interactions in the solid state. UV-vis and fluorescence spectra of the obtained compounds were measured and compared with those of unsubstituted distyrylbenzene. The crystal structures of each compound were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction and Hirshfeld surface analysis to understand the intermolecular contacts.

Effect of Chalcogenophenes on Chiroptical Activity of Twisted Tetracenes: Computational Analysis, Synthesis and Crystal Structure Thereof

The synthesis of multiply substituted acenes is still a relevant research problem, considering their applications and future potential. Here we present an elegant synthetic protocol to afford tetra-peri-substituted naphthalene and tetracene from their tetrahalo derivatives by a Pd(0)-catalyzed C-C cross-coupling method in a single step. The newly synthesized tetracenes were characterized by NMR, HRMS, UV-vis spectrophotometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). In addition, the first systematic computational study of the effect of chalcogenophenyl substitutions on the chiroptical properties of twistacenes was reported here. The gas phase computational studies using density functional theory (DFT) on a series of chalcogenophene-substituted tetracenes revealed that their chiroptical activity could be systematically increased via the atomistic tuning of peripheral substituents.

Shape control in 2D molecular nanosheets by tuning anisotropic intermolecular interactions and assembly kinetics

Since molecular materials often decompose upon exposure to radiation, lithographic patterning techniques established for inorganic materials are usually not applicable for the fabrication of organic nanostructures. Instead, molecular self-organisation must be utilised to achieve bottom-up growth of desired structures. Here, we demonstrate control over the mesoscopic shape of 2D molecular nanosheets without affecting their nanoscopic molecular packing motif, using molecules that do not form lateral covalent bonds. We show that anisotropic attractive Coulomb forces between partially fluorinated pentacenes lead to the growth of distinctly elongated nanosheets and that the direction of elongation differs between nanosheets that were grown and ones that were fabricated by partial desorption of a complete molecular monolayer. Using kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, we show that lateral intermolecular interactions alone are sufficient to rationalise the different kinetics of structure formation during nanosheet growth and desorption, without inclusion of interactions between the molecules and the supporting MoS₂ substrate. By comparison of the behaviour of differently fluorinated molecules, experimentally and computationally, we can identify properties of molecules with regard to interactions and molecular packing motifs that are required for an effective utilisation of the observed effect.

Chemical Doping by Fluorination and Its Impact on All Energy Levels of π-Conjugated Systems

Halogenation of organic molecules causes chemical shifts of C1s core-level binding energies that are commonly used as fingerprints to identify chemical species. Here, we use synchrotron-based X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations to unravel such chemical shifts by examining different partially fluorinated pentacene derivatives. Core-level shifts occur even for carbon atoms distant from the fluorination positions, yielding a continuous shift of about 1.8 eV with increasing degree of fluorination for pentacenes. Since also their LUMO energies shift markedly with the degree of fluorination of the acenes, core-level shifts result in a nearly constant excitation energy of the leading π* resonance as obtained in complementary recorded K-edge X-ray absorption spectra, hence demonstrating that local fluorination affects the entire π-system, including valence and core levels. Our results thus challenge the common picture of characteristic chemical core-level energies as fingerprint signatures of fluorinated π-conjugated molecules.

Total Synthesis of the Antimycobacterial Natural Product Chlorflavonin and Analogs via a Late-Stage Ruthenium(II)-Catalyzed ortho-C(sp2)-H-Hydroxylation

The continuous, worldwide spread of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) tuberculosis (TB) endanger the World Health Organization’s (WHO) goal to end the global TB pandemic by the year 2035. During the past 50 years, very few new drugs have been approved by medical agencies to treat drug-resistant TB. Therefore, the development of novel antimycobacterial drug candidates to combat the threat of drug-resistant TB is urgent. In this work, we developed and optimized a total synthesis of the antimycobacterial natural flavonoid chlorflavonin by selective ruthenium(II)-catalyzed ortho-C(sp²)-H-hydroxylation of a substituted 3′-methoxyflavonoid skeleton. We extended our methodology to synthesize a small compound library of 14 structural analogs. The new analogs were tested for their antimycobacterial in vitro activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and their cytotoxicity against various human cell lines. The most promising new analog bromflavonin exhibited improved antimycobacterial in vitro activity against the virulent H37Rv strain of Mtb (Minimal Inhibitory Concentrations (MIC₉₀) = 0.78 μm). In addition, we determined the chemical and metabolic stability as well as the pK_a values of chlorflavonin and bromflavonin. Furthermore, we established a quantitative structure–activity relationship model using a thermodynamic integration approach. Our computations may be used for suggesting further structural changes to develop improved derivatives.
