Fast purification of graphene oxide solution by continuous counter current hollow fibre dialysis: A step towards large scale production

Unveiling the Role of Fractionated Graphene Oxide in Nitric Oxide Scavenging

The feasibility of saturating aqueous anoxic solutions with in situ-generated high-purity nitric oxide (NO) is shown herein. A methemoglobin assay estimated the average nitric oxide concentration to be ca. 20 ± 3 µM. Graphene oxide aqueous dispersions were prepared by ultrasound-assisted extra exfoliation. These dispersions, including unpurified (pristine) samples and samples purified from transition metal impurities (bulk) fractions (bulkGO) and (nano) separated fractions (nanoGO) in a range of 0.5 to 14 kDa were prepared with ppm level concentrations. A robust and reproducible chemiluminescence (CL) assay validated the interaction between graphene oxide and NO in a luminol-based system. The results showed a significant increase in NO scavenging activity within the bulkGO fractions to nanofractions ranging from 14 to 3.5 kDa. The different reaction pathways underlying the transformation of nitric oxide are being evaluated, focusing on understanding how its presence or absence affects these processes. Our kinetic model suggests a significant difference in nitric oxide regulation; nanoGO demonstrates an interception rate seventy-times higher than that achieved through CL quenching.

Progress and challenges of graphene and its congeners for biomedical applications

Nanomaterials by virtue of their small size and enhanced surface area, present unique physicochemical properties that enjoy widespread applications in bioengineering, biomedicine, biotechnology, disease diagnosis, and therapy. In recent years, graphene and its derivatives have attracted a great deal of attention in various applications, including photovoltaics, electronics, energy storage, catalysis, sensing, and biotechnology owing to their exceptional structural, optical, thermal, mechanical, and electrical. Graphene is a two-dimensional sheet of sp2 hybridized carbon atoms of atomic thickness, which are arranged in a honeycomb crystal lattice structure. Graphene derivatives are graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), which are highly oxidized and less oxidized forms of graphene, respectively. Another form of graphene is graphene quantum dots (GQDs), having a size of less than 20 nm. Contemporary graphene research focuses on using graphene nanomaterials for biomedical purposes as they have a large surface area for loading biomolecules and medicine and offer the potential for the conjugation of fluorescent dyes or quantum dots for bioimaging. The present review begins with the synthesis, purification, structure, and properties of graphene nanomaterials. Then, we focussed on the biomedical application of graphene nanomaterials with special emphasis on drug delivery, bioimaging, biosensing, tissue engineering, gene delivery, and chemotherapy. The implications of graphene nanomaterials on human health and the environment have also been summarized due to their exposure to their biomedical applications. This review is anticipated to offer useful existing understanding and inspire new concepts to advance secure and effective graphene nanomaterials-based biomedical devices.

High-Throughput Preparation of Uncontaminated Graphene-Oxide Aqueous Dispersions with Antioxidant Properties by Semi-Automated Diffusion Dialysis

A semi-automated diffusion-dialysis purification procedure is proposed for the preparation of uncontaminated graphene oxide (GO) aqueous dispersions. The purification process is integrated with analytical-signal processing to control the purification degree online by several channels: oxidation-reduction potential, conductivity, and absorbance. This approach reduces the amounts of reagents for chemical treatment during dialysis. The total transition metal (Mn and Ti) content was reduced to a sub-ppb level (assessed by slurry nebulization in inductively coupled plasma optical atomic emission spectroscopy). Purified aqueous GO samples possess good stability for about a year with a zeta-potential of ca. -40 mV and a lateral size of ca. sub-µm. Purified GO samples showed increased antioxidant properties (up to five times compared to initial samples according to chemiluminometry by superoxide-radical (O₂^-) generated in situ from xanthine and xanthine oxidase with the lucigenin probe) and significantly decreased peroxidase-like activity (assessed by the H₂O₂-L-012 system).
