A computational study on brain tissue under blast: primary and tertiary blast injuries

Numerical Investigation of the Blast-Induced Injuries Using an Open-Source Detailed Human Model

Blasts are a threat both in military and civil contexts due not only to explosive devices but also to gas leakages or other accidents. Numerical models could aid to plan response strategies in the short and long term. Nevertheless, due to modeling complexities, a standardized computational framework has not been established yet. In this challenging context, the present study assesses the prediction of blast-induced traumas by using the total human model for safety (THUMS) human model, which has never been attempted before to the authors knowledge. The pedestrian model is publicly available, hence the demonstration of its suitability to predict blast injuries could benefit the establishment of a common modeling framework. Therefore, the THUMS human model was exposed to different blast scenarios both in free field and partially confined spaces and the response of vital organs was investigated. Trauma patterns to internal organs of the THUMS were consistent with available experimental data and injury thresholds. In conclusion, THUMS open-source human model demonstrated its validity to reproduce primary blast-related injuries, addressing the development of standardization of numerical simulations of human response to explosions.

Design of Mechanics-Guided Helmet Pad and Its Protection Performance Against the Blast Shock Waves

The blast shock waves generated by the explosion are severe threat to soldiers on the battlefield, while the helmets currently equipped for the soldiers cannot offer sufficient blast protection. Some helmet pads have been developed to improve the protection performance of the combat helmets against shock waves. However, it remains unclear how to design the helmet pads to protect the head more effectively against blast shock waves. This study aims to design a new mechanics-guided helmet pad and evaluate its protection performance by numerical simulations. The design of the new helmet pad is guided by the oblique reflection theory (ORT), and the advanced combat helmet (ACH) pad is applied for comparison. The protection performance of the pads against blast waves from two directions (frontal and lateral) was investigated. The differences in the distributions of overpressure inside the helmet using two types of pads were analyzed, and the intracranial pressure (ICP) of head was compared. The ORT-guided pads can reduce the overpressure inside the helmet, minimizing the possibility of blast-induced traumatic brain injury. Furthermore, the underwash phenomenon can also be controlled when the new pads are applied. The results in this study provide an important theoretical basis and some guidelines on the design of helmet pads for the protection of human brain from blast shock waves.

Modal Analysis of the Human Brain Using Dynamic Mode Decomposition

The majority of observations and criteria related to brain injuries predominantly focus on acceleration and forces, leaving the understanding of the brain in the frequency domain relatively limited. The impact of an injury can be more profound when considering the brain's resonant frequencies in conjunction with external applied loading and motion. This paper employs a finite element method to conduct an analysis of a human brain under impacts from various angles on the human head. A numerical technique, specifically dynamic mode decomposition (DMD), is utilized to extract modal properties for brain tissue in regions proximate to the corpus callosum and brain stem. Three distinct modal frequencies have been identified, spanning the ranges of 44-68 Hz, 68-155 Hz, and 114-299 Hz. The findings underscore the significance of impact angle, displacement direction, and the specific region of the brain in influencing the modal response of brain tissue during an impact event.

The Strain Rates in the Brain, Brainstem, Dura, and Skull under Dynamic Loadings

Knowing the precise material properties of intracranial head organs is crucial for studying the biomechanics of head injury. It has been shown that these biological tissues are significantly rate-dependent; hence, their material properties should be determined with respect to the range of deformation rate they experience. In this paper, a validated finite element human head model is used to investigate the biomechanics of the head in impact and blast, leading to traumatic brain injuries (TBI). We simulate the head under various directions and velocities of impacts, as well as helmeted and unhelmeted head under blast shock waves. It is demonstrated that the strain rates for the brain are in the range of 36 to 241 s−1, approximately 1.9 and 0.86 times the resulting head acceleration under impacts and blast scenarios, respectively. The skull was found to experience a rate in the range of 14 to 182 s−1, approximately 0.7 and 0.43 times the head acceleration corresponding to impact and blast cases. The results of these incident simulations indicate that the strain rates for brainstem and dura mater are respectively in the range of 15 to 338 and 8 to 149 s−1. These findings provide a good insight into characterizing the brain tissue, cranial bone, brainstem and dura mater, and also selecting material properties in advance for computational dynamical studies of the human head.

Computational modeling of blast induced whole-body injury: a review

Blast injuries affect millions of lives across the globe due to its traumatic after effects on the brain and the whole body. To date, military grade armour materials are designed to mitigate ballistic and shrapnel attacks but are less effective in resisting blast impacts. In order to improve blast absorption characteristics of armours, the first key step is thoroughly understands the effects of blasts on the human body itself. In the last decade, a plethora of experimental and computational work has been carried out to investigate the mechanics and pathophysiology of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). However, very few attempts have been made so far to study the effect of blasts on the various other parts of the body such as the sensory organs (eyes and ears), nervous system, thorax, extremities, internal organs (such as the lungs) and the skeletal system. While an experimental evaluation of blast effects on such physiological systems is difficult, developing finite element (FE) models could allow the recreation of realistic blast scenarios on full scale human models and simulate the effects. The current article reviews the state-of-the-art in computational research in blast induced whole-body injury modelling, which would not only help in identifying the areas in which further research is required, but would also be indispensable for understanding body location specific armour design criteria for improved blast injury mitigation.

Evaluation of brain tissue responses because of the underwash overpressure of helmet and faceshield under blast loading

Head protective tools such as helmets and faceshields can induce a localized high pressure region on the skull because of the underwash of the blast waves. Whether this underwash overpressure can affect the brain tissue response is still unknown. Accordingly, a computational approach was taken to confirm the incidence of underwash with regards to blast direction, as well as examine the influence of this effect on the mechanical responses of the brain. The variation of intracranial pressure (ICP) as one of the major injury predictors, as well as the maximum shear stress were mainly addressed in this study. Using a nonlinear finite element (FE) approach, generation and interaction of blast waves with the unprotected, helmeted, and fully protected (helmet and faceshield protected) FE head models were modeled using a multi-material arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method and a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) coupling algorithm. The underwash incidence overpressure was found to greatly change with the blast direction. Moreover, while underwash induced ICP (U-ICP) did not exceed the peak ICP of the unprotected head, it was comparable and even more than the peak ICP imposed on the protected heads by the primary shockwaves (Coup-ICP). It was concluded that while both helmet and faceshield protected the head against blast waves, the underwash overpressure affected the brain tissue response and altered the dynamic load experienced by the brain as it led to increased ICP levels at the countercoup site, imparted elevated skull flexure, and induced high negative pressure regions.
