Abstract
Anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions contribute significantly to global warming and deplete fossil carbon resources, prompting a shift to bio-based raw materials. The two main technologies for reducing CO2 emissions are capturing and either storing or utilizing it. However, while capture and storage have high reduction potential, they lack economic feasibility. Conversely, by utilizing the CO2 captured from streams and air to produce valuable products, it can become an asset and curb greenhouse gas effects. CO2 is a challenging C1-building block due to its high kinetic inertness and thermodynamic stability, requiring high temperature and pressure conditions and a reactive catalytic system. Nonetheless, cyclic carbonate production by reacting epoxides and CO2 is a promising green and sustainable chemistry reaction, with enormous potential applications as an electrolyte in lithium-ion batteries, a green solvent, and a monomer in polycarbonate production. This review focuses on the most recent developments in the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from glycerol and bio-based epoxides, as well as efficient methods for chemically transforming CO2 using flow chemistry and novel reactor designs.

Abstract
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a renewable carbon resource that can be effectively used in the production of polycarbonate (PPC) and cyclic carbonate (CPC) through open-loop copolymerization with epoxides and CO2. SalenCo(iii) can successfully break the carbon-oxygen link between propylene oxide (PO) and CO2. On this basis, we prepared four different types of photosensitive salenCo(iii) complexes and investigated their catalytic copolymerization of CO2 and PO. The results show that the catalytic performance of 1,2-cyclohexamediamine complexes is better than that of 1,2-o-phenylenediamine complexes. The catalytic efficiency of salenCo(iii) catalyst increases with the expansion of the photosensitive conjugate system. In addition, the introduction of light can improve the catalytic efficiency. When we increased the power of the external light source from 100 W to 200 W, the TON of the catalyst [C4] increased by nearly 50%.

Abstract
![]()
We present a continuous flow method for the conversion
of bioderived
limonene oxide and limonene dioxide to limonene carbonates using carbon
dioxide in its supercritical state as a reagent and sole solvent.
Various ammonium- and imidazolium-based ionic liquids were initially
investigated in batch mode. For applying the best-performing and selective
catalyst tetrabutylammonium chloride in continuous flow, the ionic
liquid was physisorbed on mesoporous silica. In addition to the analysis
of surface area and pore size distribution of the best-performing
supported ionic liquid phase (SILP) catalysts via nitrogen physisorption,
SILPs were characterized by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform
spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis and served as heterogeneous
catalysts in continuous flow. Initially, the continuous flow conversion
was optimized in short-term experiments resulting in the desired constant
product outputs. Under these conditions, the long-term behavior of
the SILP system was studied for a period of 48 h; no leaching of catalyst
from the supporting material was observed in the case of limonene
oxide and resulted in a yield of 16%. For limonene dioxide, just traces
of leached catalysts were detected after reducing the catalyst loading
from 30 to 15 wt %, thus enabling a constant product output in 17%
yield over time.

Abstract
Conversion of β-elemene into new β-elemene dicarbonates through epoxidation and halide salt-catalyzed CO2 cycloaddition reactions is reported. Step-growth polyaddition of this dicarbonate to five different, commercial diamines was investigated under neat conditions at 150 °C yielding non-isocyanate-based low molecular weight oligo(hydroxyurethane)s with 1.3≤Mn ≤6.3 kDa and 1.3≤Ð≤2.1, and with glass transition temperatures ranging from -59 to 84 °C. The preparation of one selected polyhydroxyurethane material, obtained in the presence of Jeffamine® D-2010 was scaled-up to 43 g. The latter, when combined in a formulation using Irgacure® 2100 and Laromer® LR 9000 allowed the preparation of coatings that were analyzed with several techniques showing the potential of these biobased oligourethanes towards the preparation of commercially relevant materials.

Abstract
Nonisocyanate polyurethane materials with pending alcohol groups in the polymeric chain were synthesized by polyaddition reaction of bis(cyclic carbonates) onto diamines. For the platform molecule, 1,4-butanediol bis(glycidyl ether carbonate) (BGBC, 1) was used. The polyaddition reaction of 1 onto a wide range of diamines with different electronic and physical properties was explored. All PHUs were obtained quantitatively after 16 h at 80 °C temperature in MeCN as solvent. The low nucleophilicity of L-lysine has proven unable to ring-open the cyclic carbonate and, thus, no reaction occurred. The addition of DBU or TBD as the catalyst was tested and allows the obtention of the desired PHU. However, the presence of strong bases also led to the formation of polyurea fragments in the new PHU. The different poly(hydroxyurethane) materials were characterized using a wide range of spectroscopic techniques such as NMR, IR, MALDI-ToF, and using GPC studies. The thermal properties of the NIPUs were investigated by DSC and TGA analyses. Moreover, reactions employing different monomer ratios were performed, obtaining novel hydroxycarbamate compounds. Finally, sequential and one-pot experiments were also carried out to synthesize the PHUs polymers in one-step reaction.

Abstract
Homoleptic ceric pyrazolates (pz) Ce(RR’pz)4 (R = R’ = tBu; R = R’ = Ph; R = tBu, R’ = Me) were synthesized by the protonolysis reaction of Ce[N(SiHMe2)2]4 with the corresponding pyrazole derivative. The resulting complexes were investigated in their reactivity toward CO2, revealing a significant influence of the bulkiness of the substituents on the pyrazolato ligands. The efficiency of the CO2 insertion was found to increase in the order of tBu2pz < Ph2pz < tBuMepz < Me2pz. For comparison, the pyrrole-based ate complexes [Ce2(pyr)6(µ-pyr)2(thf)2][Li(thf)4]2 (pyr = pyrrolato) and [Ce(cbz)4(thf)2][Li(thf)4] (cbz = carbazolato) were obtained via protonolysis of the cerous ate complex Ce[N(SiHMe2)2]4Li(thf) with pyrrole and carbazole, respectively. Treatment of the pyrrolate/carbazolate complexes with CO2 seemed promising, but any reversibility could not be observed.

Abstract
Bio-derived furan- and diacid-derived cyclic carbonates have been synthesized in high yields from terminal epoxides and CO2 . Furthermore, four highly substituted terpene-derived cyclic carbonates were isolated in good yields with excellent diastereoselectivity in some cases. Eleven new cyclic carbonates derived from 10-undecenoic acid under mild reaction conditions were prepared, providing the corresponding carbonate products in excellent yields. The catalyst system also performed the conversion of an epoxidized fatty acid n-pentyl ester into a cyclic carbonate under relatively mild reaction conditions (80 °C, 20 bar, 24 h). This bis(cyclic carbonate) was obtained in high yields and with different cis/trans ratios depending on the co-catalyst used. An allyl alcohol by-product was only observed as a minor product when bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium chloride was used as co-catalyst. Finally, two cyclic carbonates were used as building blocks for the preparation of non-isocyanate poly(hydroxy)urethanes by reaction with 1,4-diaminobutane.

Abstract
A set of tetranuclear alkyl aluminum adducts 1 and 2 supported by benzodiimidazole-diylidene ligands L1, N,N’-(1,5-diisopropylbenzodiimidazole-2,6-diylidene)bis(propan-2-amine), and L2, N,N’-(1,5-dicyclohexyl-benzodiimidazole-2,6-diylidene)dicyclohexanamine were synthetized in exceptional yields and characterized by spectroscopic methods. These compounds were studied as catalysts for cyclic carbonate formation (3a–o) from their corresponding terminal epoxides (2a–o) and carbon dioxide utilizing tetrabutylammonium iodide as a nucleophile in the absence of a solvent. The experiments were carried out at 70 °C and 1 bar CO2 pressure for 24 h and adduct 1 was the most efficient catalyst for the synthesis of a large variety of monosubstituted cyclic carbonates with excellent conversions and yields.

Abstract
The unparalleled potential of substrate-induced reactivity modes in the catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide and alcohol or amine functionalized epoxides is discussed in relation to more conventional epoxide/CO2 coupling strategies. This conceptually new approach allows for a substantial extension of the substitution degree and functionality of cyclic carbonate/carbamate products, which are predominant products in the area of nonreductive CO2 transformations. Apart from the creation of an advanced library of CO2 -based heterocyclic products and intermediates, also the underlying mechanistic reasons for this novel reactivity profile are debated with a prominent role for the design and structure of the involved catalysts.

Abstract
The activation and catalytic conversion of CO2 is a current topic relating to molecular chemistry and materials science alike. As a transdisciplinary field of research, surface organometallic chemistry (SOMC) might be applicable to perform synergistically, thus striking a new path in sustainable chemistry. Both ceric and cerous rare-earth-metal pyrazolates, which were recently shown to reversibly insert CO2 and to promote the catalytic cycloaddition of epoxides and carbon dioxide, were grafted onto large-pore mesoporous silica SBA-15500, thermally pretreated at 500 °C. The obtained hybrid materials [Ce(Me2pz)4]2@SBA-15500, Ce(Me2pz)4(thf)@SBA-15500, Ce4(Me2pz)12@SBA-15500, and [Ce(Me2pz)3(thf)]2@SBA-15500 (Me2pz = 3,5-dimethylpyrazolato) were characterized by DRIFTS (diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy), solid-state 1H/13C NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, ICP/OES, and N2 physisorption. The lanthanum(III)-based material [La(Me2pz)3(thf)]2@SBA-15500 was synthesized for better assessment of the cerous materials being highly sensitive to oxidation. To mimic ceric surface species, Ce[OSi(OtBu)3]3Cl was treated with 1 equiv of K(Me2pz), generating the mixed pyrazolyl/siloxy complex KCe[OSi(OtBu)3]4(Me2pz) featuring a cerium(IV)-bonded terminal pyrazolato ligand. All hybrid materials show efficient and reversible carbon dioxide uptake of maximum 20 wt % in the solid state. When combined with tetra-n-butylammonium bromide (TBAB), the hybrid materials catalyze the cycloaddition of CO2 and epoxides, displaying good conversion of various epoxides and reusability.

Abstract
In the present research, the synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, and structural investigations of a unique ZnII complex of imine-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) is designed, and hereby described, as a catalyst for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from epoxides and CO2. The uncommon features of the designed catalytic system is the elimination of the need for a high pressure of CO2 and the significant shortening of reaction times commonly associated with such difficult transformations like that of styrene oxide to styrene carbonate. Our studies have shown that imine-POSS is able to chelate metal ions like ZnII to form a unique coordination complex. The silsesquioxane core and the hindrance of the side arms (their steric effect) influence the construction process of the homoleptic Zn4@POSS-1 complex. The compound was characterized in solution by NMR (1H, 13C, 29Si), ESI-MS, UV/Vis spectroscopy and in the solid state by thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), elemental analysis, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CP MAS) NMR (13C, 29Si) spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
The selective catalytic synthesis of limonene-derived monofunctional cyclic carbonates and their subsequent functionalisation via thiol-ene addition and amine ring-opening is reported. A phosphotungstate polyoxometalate catalyst used for limonene epoxidation in the 1,2-position is shown to also be active in cyclic carbonate synthesis, allowing a two-step, one-pot synthesis without intermittent epoxide isolation. When used in conjunction with a classical halide catalyst, the polyoxometalate increased the rate of carbonation in a synergistic double-activation of both substrates. The cis isomer is shown to be responsible for incomplete conversion and by-product formation in commercial mixtures of 1,2-limomene oxide. Carbonation of 8,9-limonene epoxide furnished the 8,9-limonene carbonate for the first time. Both cyclic carbonates underwent thiol-ene addition reactions to yield linked di-monocarbonates, which can be used in linear non-isocyanate polyurethanes synthesis, as shown by their facile ring-opening with N-hexylamine. Thus, the selective catalytic route to monofunctional limonene carbonates gives straightforward access to monomers for novel bio-based polymers.

Abstract
The homoleptic pyrazolate complexes [CeIII 4 (Me2 pz)12 ] and [CeIV (Me2 pz)4 ]2 quantitatively insert CO2 to give [CeIII 4 (Me2 pz⋅CO2 )12 ] and [CeIV (Me2 pz⋅CO2 )4 ], respectively (Me2 pz=3,5-dimethylpyrazolato). This process is reversible for both complexes, as observed by in situ IR and NMR spectroscopy in solution and by TGA in the solid state. By adjusting the molar ratio, one molecule of CO2 per [CeIV (Me2 pz)4 ] complex could be inserted to give trimetallic [Ce3 (Me2 pz)9 (Me2 pz⋅CO2 )3 (thf)]. Both the cerous and ceric insertion products catalyze the formation of cyclic carbonates from epoxides and CO2 under mild conditions. In the absence of epoxide, the ceric catalyst is prone to reduction by the co-catalyst tetra-n-butylammonium bromide (TBAB).

Abstract
The rare-earth elements (Ln = Sc, Y, La-Lu) are widely used in stoichiometric and catalytic carbonyl group transformations. Sufficient availability, non-toxicity, high oxophilicity, tunable ion size/Lewis acidity and enhanced ligand exchangeability have been major driving factors for their successful implementation. Routinely employed reagents for stoichiometric carbonyl group transformations are divalent ytterbium and samarium compounds (e.g., ketone reduction), bimetallic CeCl3/LiR (C-C coupling), or ceric ammonium nitrate CAN (cyclic ketone oxidation). Rare-earth-metal triflates, and in particular Sc(OTf)3, are prominent examples of Lewis acid catalysts for versatile use in organic synthesis (e.g., Aldol and Michael reactions). Moreover, Ln(ii) and Ln(iii) complexes efficiently catalyze the (co)polymerization of carbonyl group-containing monomers including lactones, lactides, acrylates, and carbon dioxide. Featuring the most notorious greenhouse gas, CO2 is currently assessed as a cheap, abundant, and non-toxic C1 building block. Ln(iii) complexes are not only capable of efficient CO2 capture via reversible insertion but also of CO2 activation for catalytic conversions (copolymerization/cycloaddition with epoxides). This perspective focuses on structurally elucidated Ln complexes resulting from ketone or carbonyl derivative activation/insertion as well as carbon dioxide insertion products. The respective compounds will be sorted by structural motifs and, if applicable, details on reactivity and feasibility of catalytic reactions are presented. The article is subdivided in three parts: (i) donor and insertion products of ketones and aldehydes, (ii) redox-enhanced activation of carbonyl derivatives, and (iii) CO2 insertion/redox products and homogeneous catalytic conversion.

Abstract
A series of novel hexanuclear 3d-4f complexes formulated as {[Ln2Zn4(μ3-OH)2L4(AcO)2(NO3)2(DMF)2]·2(CH3OH), LnIII = Dy3+ (1), Nd3+ (2), Tb3+ (3)} have been synthesized and characterized. These complexes 1-3 show excellent catalytic performance for the cycloaddition of CO2 and epoxides to obtain cyclic carbonates. The catalytic system has a wide substrate scope with high turnover numbers (9700) and high turnover frequencies (808 h-1) under mild conditions. Additionally, the catalysts could be conveniently prepared on a large scale and recycled.

Abstract
Given the large amount of anthropogenic CO2 emissions, it is advantageous to use CO2 as feedstock for the fabrication of everyday products, such as fuels and materials. An attractive way to use CO2 in the synthesis of polymers is by the formation of five-membered cyclic organic carbonate monomers (5CCs). The sustainability of this synthetic approach is increased by using scaffolds prepared from renewable resources. Indeed, recent years have seen the rise of various types of carbonate syntheses and applications. 5CC monomers are often polymerized with diamines to yield polyhydroxyurethanes (PHU). Foams are developed from this type of polymers; moreover, the additional hydroxyl groups in PHU, absent in classical polyurethanes, lead to coatings with excellent adhesive properties. Furthermore, carbonate groups in polymers offer the possibility of post-functionalization, such as curing reactions under mild conditions. Finally, the polarity of carbonate groups is remarkably high, so polymers with carbonates side-chains can be used as polymer electrolytes in batteries or as conductive membranes. The target of this Review is to highlight the multiple opportunities offered by polymers prepared from and/or containing 5CCs. Firstly, the preparation of several classes of 5CCs is discussed with special focus on the sustainability of the synthetic routes. Thereafter, specific classes of polymers are discussed for which the use and/or presence of carbonate moieties is crucial to impart the targeted properties (foams, adhesives, polymers for energy applications, and other functional materials).

Abstract
In order to produce versatile and potentially functional terpene-based compounds, a (R)-limonene-derived diol and its corresponding five-membered cyclic carbonate were prepared. The diol (cyclic carbonate) comprises four diastereomers based on the stereochemical configuration of the diol (and cyclic carbonate) moiety. By choosing the appropriate starting compounds (trans- and cis-limonene oxide) and conditions, the desired diastereomers were synthesised in moderate to high yields with, in most cases, high stereoselectivity. Comparison of the NMR data of the obtained diols and carbonates revealed that the four different diastereomers of each compound could be distinguished by reference to their characteristic signals.

Abstract
New bifunctional aluminum complexes have been prepared with the aim of studying the effect of a counterion on the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from epoxides and carbon dioxide (CO2). Neutral ligand 1 was used as a precursor to obtain four novel mesylate, chloride, bromide, and iodide zwitterionic NNO ligands (2-5). The reaction of these ligands with 1 or 2 equiv of AlR3 (R = Me, Et) allowed the synthesis of mono- and bimetallic bifunctional aluminum complexes [AlR2(κ2-mbpzappe)]X [X = Cl, R = Me (6), Et (7); X = Br, R = Me (8), Et (9); X = I, R = Me (10), Et (11)] and [{AlR2(κ2-mbpzappe)}(μ-O){AlR3}]X [X = MeSO3, R = Me (12), Et (13); X = Cl, R = Me (14), Et (15); X = Br, R = Me (16), Et (17); X = I, R = Me (18), Et (19)] via alkane elimination. These complexes were studied as catalysts for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from epoxides and CO2. Iodide complex 11 showed to be the most active catalyst for terminal epoxides, whereas bromide complex 9 was found to be the optimal catalyst when internal epoxides were used, showing the importance of the nucleophile cocatalyst on the catalytic activity.

Abstract
Two-dimensional ZnII /CdII -based dual ligand metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) {[M(CHDC)(L)]⋅H2 O}n involving 4-pyridyl carboxaldehyde isonicotinoylhydrazone (L) in combination with flexible 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid (H2 CHDC) as linkers have been synthesized by adaptable synthetic protocols including a green mechanochemical (grinding) method. Characterization, chemical/thermal stability, phase purity, and solid-state luminescent properties of both MOFs have been established by various analytical methods. Structural analysis revealed dimeric metal clusters composed of [M2 (CHDC)2 ]n loops doubly pillared with L, generating a 2D framework. Both MOFs can be used as highly active solvent-free binary catalysts for CO2 cycloaddition with epoxides in the presence of the co-catalyst tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) with good catalytic conversion in up to six catalytic cycles without significant loss of activity. The present investigation demonstrates the application of MOFs as efficient heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 utilization under moderate reaction conditions. Based on the single-crystal X-ray data, a probable mechanism for the cycloaddition reaction has also been proposed.
