Abstract
Background: Retrogenesis is the process by which the degenerative and vascular mechanisms of dementia reverse the order of acquisition in the normal development. Objective: The development of memory/knowledge after birth may help to know the biopsychosocial and functional characteristics (biosphere) of the retrogenesis. Methods: A literature review was performed in the PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases using 43 keywords related to retrogenesis: 234 eligible records were selected. Results: The infantile amnesia, characterized from anoesis, was described along the infant/child's biosphere in which the limbic system progressively develops the acquisition of the body knowledge (Anoetic Body Consciousness, AnBC). Anoesis is the infant memory state characterized by the absence of long-term memories of the many stressful/painful experiences that accompany the acquisition under the long-life voluntary control of the long-term memories fundamental for the body growth and survival (mainly chewing/swallowing and walking). At the age of 3-4 years, usually, the AnBC evolves, as a continuum, into the adulthood autonoesis with the emergence, in the child/adolescent, of the consciousness of "self" trough the development of the Episodic Autobiographic Memory (EAM) and the Autonoetic Mind Consciousness (AuMC). The development of cognition and knowledge is due to the progressive maturation of the whole limbic system and not only of the hippocampus. In the biopsychosocial retrogenesis, the EAM/AuMC vanishes progressively along the mild, moderate, and severe stages of dementia when the infant AnBC resurfaces, losing progressively the basic activities of daily living in a retrogenetic order of acquisition where the last functions to disappear are chewing/swallowing. Conclusion: The transition from the adult EAM-AuMC to the infant AnBC, as a continuum in the individual biosphere, adds a contribution to the assessment of the retrogenesis in dementia from a multidimensional person-centered model.

Abstract
Early childhood events are rarely remembered in adulthood. In fact, memory for these early experiences declines during childhood itself. This holds regardless of whether these memories of autobiographical experiences are traumatic or mundane, everyday experiences. Indeed, what people tend to remember from their childhoods involves relatively innocuous experiences, ones often devoid of emotion. In this article, I provide an overview of the types of memories adults recall from their childhoods and the ages at which these memories are believed to have been formed. Along the way, I provide a brief exegesis of the neurobiological and cognitive underpinnings of early memory development. I will show that changes and growth in neural interconnectivity as well as the development of various cognitive structures (e.g., the inception of the cognitive self) help propel the emergence of a mature autobiographical memory system, one that can and does serve as a reconstructive base for remembering events that occur in later childhood and adulthood. During the course of this review, I detail the nature of early memories, their fragility, and the adaptive consequences of forgetting and supplanting these memories with newer, more age-appropriate experiences throughout childhood.

Abstract
Young children and aged individuals are more prone to memory loss than young adults. One probable reason is insufficient sleep-dependent memory consolidation. Sleep timing and sleep-stage duration differ between children and aged individuals compared to adults. Frequent daytime napping and fragmented sleep architecture are common in children and older individuals. Moreover, sleep-dependent oscillations that play crucial roles in long-term memory storage differ among age groups. Notably, the frontal cortex, which is important for long-term memory storage undergoes major structural changes in children and aged subjects. The similarities in sleep dynamics between children and aged subjects suggest that a deficit in sleep-dependent consolidation contributes to memory loss in both age groups.

Abstract
Biological and psychological processes have been conceptualized as emerging from intricate multiplicative interactions among component processes across various spatial and temporal scales. Among the statistical models employed to approximate these intricate nonlinear interactions across scales, one prominent framework is that of cascades. Despite decades of empirical work using multifractal formalisms, several fundamental questions persist concerning the proper interpretations of multifractal evidence of nonlinear cross-scale interactivity. Does multifractal spectrum width depend on multiplicative interactions, constituent noise processes participating in those interactions, or both? We conducted numerical simulations of cascade time series featuring component noise processes characterizing a range of nonlinear temporal correlations: nonlinearly multifractal, linearly multifractal (obtained via the iterative amplitude adjusted wavelet transform of nonlinearly multifractal), phase-randomized linearity (obtained via the iterative amplitude adjustment Fourier transform of nonlinearly multifractal), and phase and amplitude randomized (obtained via shuffling of nonlinearly multifractal). Our findings show that the multiplicative interactions coordinate with the nonlinear temporal correlations of noise components to dictate emergent multifractal properties. Multiplicative cascades with stronger nonlinear temporal correlations make multifractal spectra more asymmetric with wider left sides. However, when considering multifractal spectral differences between the original and surrogate time series, even multiplicative cascades produce multifractality greater than in surrogate time series, even with linearized multifractal noise components. In contrast, additivity among component processes leads to a linear outcome. These findings provide a robust framework for generating multifractal expectations for biological and psychological models in which cascade dynamics flow from one part of an organism to another.

Abstract
Children born extremely preterm (EPT) or very preterm (VPT) are at risk of neurodevelopmental impairment. How the interaction between biological and social risk factors affects cognitive development has not yet been completely understood. The objectives of this study are to analyze and compare the language, memory, and learning outcomes of five-year-old children born EPT (<28 weeks' gestational age) and VPT (28-31+6 weeks' gestational age) and to determine the risk of having poor outcomes attending to perinatal and maternal characteristics. The analysis included 377 children born VPT (n = 284) and EPT (n = 93) in 2011-2012. Maternal, neonatal, and clinical information was obtained at birth, and maternal education was obtained at five years using a parental questionnaire. At five years, the language, memory, and learning outcomes were assessed with the developmental NEuroPSYchological assessment second edition (NEPSY-II®). Logistic regression models were applied to assess the association of biological and social risk factors with performance below the expected level for the child's age in language, memory, and learning subtests. Lower maternal age and education increased the odds of having language performance below the expected level for the child's age, while lower maternal educational level and gestational age increased the likelihood of having memory performance below the expected level. Children living in the most social disadvantage contexts are at a higher risk of suboptimal cognitive development. Implementing intervention programs in disadvantaged contexts and targeting specific cognitive domains may enable EPT and VPT children to reach and fulfill their potential in society.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE As the COVID-19 pandemic brings widespread changes in families, the sociology of sleep becomes noticeable. Yet, the socio-contextual determinants of a biopsychosocial phenomenon as sleep are poorly investigated. We examine changes concomitantly occurring in the child's sleep per familial and community stressors. METHODS During the pre-COVID-19 outbreak period, in 24 minority children (5.4 ± 1.7 years old, 54.2% girls), sleep was objectively measured 24 h for two consecutive weeks, and this was repeated three times over the study period of three months. The caregiver filled out questionnaires surveying sociodemographic, community and family aspects. RESULTS Children went to bed at 22:26 and woke up at 07:04, with each a variability of about 50 min. Money and time were revealed as related key stressors to sleep. Five dimensions best fitted their association. In general, concurrent changes within the individual child indicate that mean sleep variables seem to relate to predominantly features of the stressors (explained variance of 34.7 to 56.7%), while variability of sleep tends to associate to situational aspects of the stressors (explained variance of 30.4 to 61.8%). Associations were best explained in terms of the 24 h dimension, particularly exposing sleep variability. CONCLUSION Individual variabilities in a child's sleep are associated with familial resources, such as caregiver's time to self, money and basic needs. Time spent in bed, a modifiable factor by society and shaper of sleep quantity and quality, plays a key role in stressor-sleep associations. Insights from biopsychosocial perspectives may be valuable for understanding COVID-19 sleep studies, and the development of (post-) COVID-19 sleep recommendations.

Abstract
From birth to 15 months infants and caregivers form a fundamentally intersubjective, dyadic unit within which the infant's ability to recognize gender/sex in the world develops. Between about 18 and 36 months the infant accumulates an increasingly clear and subjective sense of self as female or male. We know little about how the precursors to gender/sex identity form during the intersubjective period, nor how they transform into an independent sense of self by 3 years of age. In this Theory and Hypothesis article I offer a general framework for thinking about this problem. I propose that through repetition and patterning, the dyadic interactions in which infants and caregivers engage imbue the infant with an embodied, i.e., sensori-motor understanding of gender/sex. During this developmental period (which I label Phase 1) gender/sex is primarily an intersubjective project. From 15 to 18 months (which I label Phase 2) there are few reports of newly appearing gender/sex behavioral differences, and I hypothesize that this absence reflects a period of developmental instability during which there is a transition from gender/sex as primarily inter-subjective to gender/sex as primarily subjective. Beginning at 18 months (i.e., the start of Phase 3), a toddler's subjective sense of self as having a gender/sex emerges, and it solidifies by 3 years of age. I propose a dynamic systems perspective to track how infants first assimilate gender/sex information during the intersubjective period (birth to 15 months); then explore what changes might occur during a hypothesized phase transition (15 to 18 months), and finally, review the emergence and initial stabilization of individual subjectivity-the period from 18 to 36 months. The critical questions explored focus on how to model and translate data from very different experimental disciplines, especially neuroscience, physiology, developmental psychology and cognitive development. I close by proposing the formation of a research consortium on gender/sex development during the first 3 years after birth.

Abstract
The formation of memories that contain information about the specific time and place of acquisition, which are commonly referred to as "autobiographical" or "episodic" memories, critically relies on the hippocampus and on a series of interconnected structures located in the medial temporal lobe of the mammalian brain. The observation that adults retain very few of these memories from the first years of their life has fueled a long-standing debate on whether infants can make the types of memories that in adults are processed by the hippocampus-dependent memory system, and whether the hippocampus is involved in learning and memory processes early in life. Recent evidence shows that, even at a time when its circuitry is not yet mature, the infant hippocampus is able to produce long-lasting memories. However, the ability to acquire and store such memories relies on molecular pathways and network-based activity dynamics different from the adult system, which mature with age. The mechanisms underlying the formation of hippocampus-dependent memories during infancy, and the role that experience exerts in promoting the maturation of the hippocampus-dependent memory system, remain to be understood. In this review, we discuss recent advances in our understanding of the ontogeny and the biological correlates of hippocampus-dependent memories.

Abstract
Episodic memory, or the ability to remember past events with specific detail, is central to the human experience and is related to learning and adaptive functioning in a variety of domains. In typically developing children, episodic memory emerges during infancy and improves during early childhood and beyond. Developmental processes within the hippocampus are hypothesized to be primarily responsible for both the early emergence and persistence of episodic memory in late infancy and early childhood. However, these hypotheses are based on non-human models. In-vivo investigations in early human development of hippocampal processes have been significantly limited by methodological challenges in acquiring neuroimaging data, particularly task-related functional neuroimaging data, from infants and toddlers. Recent studies in adults have shown neural activity in the brain regions supporting episodic memory during slow-wave sleep using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and fMRI has been increasingly utilized in infancy and early childhood to address other research questions. We review initial evidence and present preliminary data showing the promise of this approach for examining hippocampal contribution to how infants and toddlers remember individual events, and their association with information about the context in which the event occurred. Overall, our review, integrated with the presentation of some preliminary data provides insight on leveraging sleep to gain new perspectives on early memory functioning.
