Effects of Livestock Grazing On The Ecology Of Sierra Meadows: A Review of The Current State of Scientific Knowledge To Inform Meadow Restoration And Management

Wet montane meadows are an important component of the Sierra Nevada, CA ecosystem that provide diverse ecological services when in functional condition. Efforts are underway to restore meadows that have been degraded from past and historic land uses. Livestock grazing is a common land use in meadows with the potential to impact Sierra meadow ecology and may be a critical determinant of restoration success. We used a systematic literature review (SLR) method to identify, review, and synthesize scientific literature about the ecological effects of livestock grazing on Sierra meadow ecology resource areas, including hydrologic function, water quality, plants, soil, fens, and fish and wildlife species. We found 47 studies that matched our search criteria for inclusion in this SLR. Livestock grazing was associated with predominantly negative effects for each resource area reviewed, suggesting that achieving functional ecological condition in Sierra meadows that are currently used for livestock grazing may be challenging. Nevertheless, there was some evidence for compatibility with certain resource areas and certain management regimes. We discuss livestock management options, ecological objectives, and research questions that emerge from the literature to help inform meadow restoration and management.

Visualization of the Distance among Fishes by MALDI MS for Rapid Determination of the Taxonomic Status of Fish Fillets

Taxonomic research plays an important role in the classification of organisms. Molecular techniques provide useful tools for the determination of the taxonomic status of species, although often time-consuming and not cost-efficient. Herein, we developed a strategy to analyze fish samples in a rapid mode. Experimentally, fish fillet samples were pretreated with trifluoroacetic acid aqueous solution, and the obtained protein fraction was analyzed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry. Principal component analysis of mass spectrometric datasets was used to visualize the taxonomical distance among the analyzed 13 seafood species. The results were illustrated using treemaps where the fish relationship distance can be visualized. The obtained mass spectral results can be taken as reference and successfully used for the identification of unknown fish fillet samples. It is promising to utilize the present strategy to provide clues for the taxonomy study among ambiguous species and identify fish species.

Did changes in western federal land management policies improve salmonid habitat in streams on public lands within the Interior Columbia River Basin?

Historic management actions authorized or allowed by federal land management agencies have had a profound negative effect on salmon, trout, and char populations and their habitats. To rectify past failings, in the 1990s, federal agencies in the Interior Columbia River Basin modified how they conducted land management activities to foster the conservation of aquatic species. The primary policy changes were to provide additional protection and restoration of lands near streams, lakes, and wetlands. What remains uncertain was whether these changes have altered the trajectory of stream habitat conditions. To address this question, we evaluate the status and trends of ten stream habitat attributes; wood frequency, wood volume, residual pool depth, percent pool, pool frequency, pool tail fines (< 6 mm), median particle size, percent undercut banks, bank angle, and streambank stability in managed and reference catchments following changes in management policies. Our review of these data support the hypothesis that changes made in management standards and guidelines in the 1990s are related to improved stream conditions. Determining the precise magnitude of changes in stream conditions that resulted from the modification of land management policies is difficult due to the shifting environmental baseline. By understanding and accounting for how changes in stream conditions reflect improved land management policies and broader environmental trends, federal agencies will be better situated to make project level decisions that benefit aquatic resources.

Livestock management, beaver, and climate influences on riparian vegetation in a semi-arid landscape

Riparian and aquatic habitats support biodiversity and key environmental processes in semi-arid and arid landscapes, but stressors such as conventional livestock grazing, wildfire, and drought can degrade their condition. To enhance habitat for fish and wildlife and increase resiliency in these critical areas, land managers in the interior western United States increasingly use alternative grazing strategies, beaver management, or beaver dam surrogates as low-effort, low-expense restoration approaches. In this study we used historical archives of satellite and aerial imagery spanning three decades to characterize riparian vegetation productivity and document beaver dam occurrences, then evaluated vegetation productivity relative to land management associated with livestock grazing and beaver dam densities while accounting for climate and wildfire. After controlling for stream characteristics such as stream size, elevation, and stream slope, we demonstrate a positive response of riparian area vegetation to conservation-oriented grazing approaches and livestock exclosures, extensive beaver dam development, increased precipitation, and lack of wildfire. We show that livestock management which emphasizes riparian recovery objectives can be an important precursor to beaver activity and describe 11-39% increases in floodplain vegetation productivity where conservation-oriented grazing approaches or livestock exclosures and high beaver activity occur together on low-gradient sites. Land management decisions can therefore potentially confer resiliency to riparian areas under changing and variable climate conditions-the increased vegetation productivity resulting from conservation-oriented grazing or exclosures and high amounts of beaver activity at our sites is the equivalent to moving conventionally-grazed, low-gradient sites without beaver up at least 250 m in elevation or increasing water year precipitation by at least 250 mm.
