Abstract
Deep eutectic solvents are a new class of green solvents that are being explored as an alternative for used nuclear fuel and critical material recycling. However, there is a paucity of knowledge regarding metal behavior in them. This paper explores the underlying chemistry of rare-earth elements in choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvents by using a multi-technique spectroscopic methodology. Results show that speciation is highly dependent on the choice of the hydrogen-bond donor. Collected EXAFS data showed Ln3+ coordination with ethylene glycol and urea in their respective solvents and coordination with chloride in the lactic acid system. Generalized coordination environments were determined to be [LnL4-5], [LnL7-10], and [LnL5-6] in the ethylene glycol, urea, and lactic acid systems, respectively. Collected UV/vis spectra for Nd3+ and Er3+ showed variations with changing solvents, showing that Ln-Cl interactions do not dominate in these systems. Luminescence studies were consistent, showing varying emission spectra with varying solvent systems. The shortest luminescent lifetimes were observed in the choline chloride-ethylene glycol deep eutectic solvent, suggesting coordination through O-H groups. Combining all collected data allowed Eu3+ coordination geometries to be assigned.

Abstract
Three new mercury(II) coordination compounds, {[HgCl(pic)]}n (1), [HgCl(pic)(picH)] (2), and [HgBr(pic)(picH)] (3) (picH = pyridine-2-carboxylic acid, picolinic acid) were prepared by reactions of the corresponding mercury(II) halides and picolinic acid in an aqueous (1) or alcohol–methanol or ethanol (2 and 3) solutions. Two different types of coordination compounds were obtained depending on the solvent used. The crystal structures were determined by the single-crystal X-ray structural analysis. Compound 1 is a one-dimensional (1-D) coordination polymer with mercury(II) ions bridged by chelating and bridging N,O,O′-picolinate ions. Each mercury(II) ion is four-coordinated with a bidentate picolinate ion, a carboxylate O atom from the symmetry-related picolinate ion and with a chloride ion; the resulting coordination environment can be described as a highly distorted tetrahedron. Compounds 2 and 3 are isostructural mononuclear coordination compounds, each mercury(II) ion being coordinated with the respective halide ion, N,O-bidentate picolinate ion, and N,O-bidentate picolinic acid in a highly distorted square-pyramidal coordination environment. Compounds 1–3 were characterized by IR spectroscopy, PXRD, and thermal methods (TGA/DSC) in the solid state and by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy in the DMSO solution.

Abstract
The solvated yttrium iodide precursors [Y(L)(8)]I(3) (L = DMSO or DMF), prepared in situ by stirring YI(3)(Pr(i)OH)(4) in DMSO or DMF, react with CuI in the presence of NH(4)I to give ionic hetero-metallic species [Y(DMSO)(8)][Cu(2)(mu-I)I(4)] (1) and [Y(DMF)(8)][Cu(4)(mu(3)-I)(2)(mu-I)(3)I(2)] (2) in excellent yields. Re-crystallization of 1 from DMF afforded the mixed-solvate complex [Y(DMSO)(6)(DMF)(2)][CuI(3)][I] (3). Compounds 2 and 3 undergo unique crystal-to-crystal transformation via progressive substitution of DMF by water molecules in a confined, solvent-free environment. Thus, crystals of 3 transform into [Y(DMSO)(6)(H(2)O)(2)][CuI(3)][I] (4), whereas a discrete ion-pair assembly of 2 is first converted into a 1-D zig-zag structure [Y(DMF)(6)(H(2)O)(2)](3+)[Cu(7)(mu(4)-I)(3)(mu(3)-I)(2)(mu-I)(4)(I)](1infinity)(3-) (5) and finally into a 2-D sheet containing mixed-valent copper atoms, [Y(DMF)(6)(H(2)O)(3)](3+)[Cu(I)(7)Cu(II)(2)(mu(3)-I)(8)(mu-I)(6)](2infinity)(3-) (6). The bi- and tetrafurcate H-bonding between water ligands on yttrium and iodides of the Cu-I cluster plays a pivotal role in the evolution of structures 4-6. Formation of a wide range of iodocuprate structures in 1-6, from discrete mono-, di- or tetranuclear units to one- and two-dimensional extended arrays, reflects the influence of solvated yttrium cations on the nuclearity and dimensionality of Cu-I clusters. TG-DTA-MS studies and DFT calculations for these complexes have also been carried out in order to determine their thermal stability and have insight about aforesaid transformations.

Abstract
Based on an unsymmetrical 2-pyridylphosphonate ligand, two types of Ln(III)-Cu(II) compounds with three-dimensional structures were obtained under hydrothermal conditions, namely, Ln(2)Cu(3)(C(5)H(4)NPO(3))(6).4H(2)O (1.Ln; Ln=La, Ce, Pr, Nd) and Ln(2)Cu(3)(C(5)H(4)NPO(3))(6) (2.Ln; Ln=Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho). Compounds 1.Ln are isostructural and crystallize in chiral cubic space group I2(1)3. In these structures, each Ln ion is nine-coordinate and has a tricapped triprismatic geometry, while each Cu center is six-coordinate with an octahedral environment. The {LnO(9)} polyhedra and {CuN(2)O(4)} octahedra are connected by edge sharing to form an inorganic open framework structure with a 3-connected 10-gon (10,3) topology in which the Ln and Cu atoms are alternately linked by the phosphonate oxygen atoms. Compounds 2.Ln are isostructural and crystallize in trigonal space group R3. In these structures, the {LnO(6)} octahedra are triply bridged by the {CPO(3)} tetrahedra by corner sharing to form an infinite chain along the c axis. Each chain is connected to its six equivalents through corner sharing of {CPO(3)} tetrahedra and {CuN(2)O(2)} planes to form a three-dimensional framework structure in which the Ln and Cu atoms are linked purely by O-P-O units. The formation of these two types of structures is rationalized by quantum chemical calculations, which showed that both the lanthanide contraction and the electron configuration of Cu(II) play important roles. When Cu(II) was replaced by Zn(II), only the first type of compounds resulted. The magnetic properties of complexes 1.Ln and 2.Ln were investigated. The nature of Ln(III)-Cu(II) (Ln=Ce, Pr, Nd) interactions is illustrated by comparison with their Ln(III)-Zn(II) analogues.

Abstract
Three series of porous lanthanide metal-organic coordination polymers, namely [Cu(bpy)Ln(3)(ip)(5)(Hip)(H(2)O)] [Ln = Er (1a), Y (1b), Eu (1c); bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, H(2)ip=isophthalic acid], [Cu(3)(bpy)(2)Ln(2)(ip)(6)(H(2)O)(5)] [Ln = Yb (2a), Gd (2b), Tb (2c)], and [Cu(3)Ln(2)(ip)(6)] [Ln = Eu (3a), Gd (3b)] have been synthesized hydrothermally by the reaction of the combination of 3d-4f metal centers and N-/O-donor ligands. X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that polymers 1a-c and 2a-c, as well as 3a, b are isomorphous in structure. Polymers 1a-c consist of 3D alpha-Po networks based on a inorganic rod-shaped secondary building units (SBUs) of {Er(6)Cu(2)(bipy)(2)(O(2)C)(11)} which are 27.03 A in length. Polymers 2a-c also contain 3D alpha-Po networks, constructed from shorter (14.79 A) but similarly rod-shaped SBUs of {Yb(2)Cu(3)(bpy)(2)(O(2)C)(12)}. The structure also contains hydrogen-bonded (H(2)O)(6) chains which can be reversibly dehydrated/rehydrated. Polymers 3a, b contain metal carboxylate substructures which have 2D (6,3) topologies; these layers are bridged by the ip(2-) ligands to give an overall 3D network which contains two sorts of cavities. This series of Ln-Cu coordination polymers are further characterized by antiferromagnetic behavior.

Abstract
The reaction of [M(H(2)L(i))] (M = Cu, Zn) and U(acac)(4) in refluxing pyridine produced the trinuclear complexes [[ML(i)(py)(x)](2)U] [L(i) = N,N'-bis(3-hydroxysalicylidene)-R, R = 1,2-ethanediamine (i = 1), 2-methyl-1,2-propanediamine (i = 2), 1,2-cyclohexanediamine (i = 3), 1,2-phenylenediamine (i = 4), 4,5-dimethyl-1,2-phenylenediamine (i = 5), 1,3-propanediamine (i = 6), 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediamine (i = 7), 2-amino-benzylamine (i = 8), or 1,4-butanediamine (i = 9); x = 0 or 1]. The crystal structures show that the central U(IV) ion adopts the same dodecahedral configuration in all of these compounds, while the Cu(II) ion coordination geometry and the Cu...U distance vary with the length of the diimino chain of the Schiff base ligand L(i). These geometrical parameters have a major influence on the magnetic properties of the complexes. For the smallest Cu...U distances (i = 1-5), the Cu-U coupling is antiferromagnetic and weak antiferromagnetic interactions are present between the Cu(II) ions, while for the largest Cu...U distances (i = 6-9), the Cu-U coupling is ferromagnetic and no interaction is observed between the Cu(II) ions. The magnetic behavior of the [[CuL(i)](2)Th] compounds (i = 1, 2), in which the Th(IV) ion is diamagnetic, confirms the presence of weak intramolecular antiferromagnetic coupling between the Cu(II) ions.
