5‐Methylthiophene‐2,3‐dithiolene Transition Metal Complexes

Mixed-Valence Conductors from Ni Bis(diselenolene) Complexes with a Thiazoline Backbone

Highly conducting, mixed-valence, multi-component nickel bis(diselenolene) salts were obtained by electrocrystallization of the monoanionic species [Ni(Me-thiazds)₂]^-1 (Me-thiazds: N-methyl-1,3-thiazoline-2-thione-4,5-diselenolate), with 1:2 and 1:3 stoichiometries depending of the counter ion used (Et₄N⁺ and nBu₄N⁺ vs Ph₄P⁺, respectively). This behavior strongly differs from that of the corresponding monoanionic dithiolene complexes whose oxidation afforded the single component neutral species. This provides additional rare examples of mixed-valence conducting salts of nickel diselenolene complexes, only known in two examples with the dsit (1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-diselenolate) and dsise (1,3-dithiole-2-selone-4,5-diselenolate) ligands. The mixed-valence salts form highly dimerized or trimerized bi- and trimetallic units, rarely seen with such nickel complexes. Transport measurements under a high pressure (up to 10 GPa) and band structure calculations confirm the semiconducting character of [Ph₄P][Ni(Me-thiazds)₂]₃ and the quasi metallic character of [Et₄N][Ni(Me-thiazds)₂]₂ and [NBu₄]_x[Ni(Me-thiazds)₂]₂ salts (0 < x < 1).

Broadband near-IR absorbing Au-dithiolene complexes bearing redox-active oligothiophene ligands

A series of three homoleptic, monoanionic gold dithiolene complexes of oligothiophene ligands which coordinate via a central thiophene-3,4-dithiolate chelate are presented. The oligomer chains are three, five and seven thiophenes long and the complexes display hybrid optoelectronic properties featuring characteristics of both the oligothiophene chains and the delocalised metal dithiolene centre. The properties of the complexes have been characterised using a variety of spectroscopic and electrochemical methods complemented by computational studies. Solid state spectroelectrochemistry has revealed that upon oxidation these complexes display intense and broad absorption across the visible spectrum. In attempting to produce nickel analogues of these materials a single crystal of a photo-oxidised nickel dithiolene complex has also been isolated.

Gold and Nickel Extended Thiophenic-TTF Bisdithiolene Complexes

Gold and nickel bisdithiolene complexes with methyl and tert-butyl substituted thiophenetetrathiafulavalenedithiolate ligands (α-mtdt and α-tbtdt) were prepared and characterized. These complexes were obtained, under anaerobic conditions, as tetrabutylammonium salts. The diamagnetic gold monoanion (n-Bu₄N)[Au(α-mtdt)₂] (3) and nickel dianionic species (n-Bu₄N)_x[Ni(α-mtdt)₂] (x = 1,2) (4) were similar to the related non-substituted extended thiophenic-TTF (TTF = tetrathiafulvalene) bisdithiolenes. However the introduction of the large, bulky substituent tert-butyl, led to the formation of a Au (I) dinuclear complex, (n-Bu₄N)₂[Au₂(α-tbtdt)₂] (5). The neutral methyl substituted gold and nickel complexes were easily obtained through air or iodine exposure as polycrystalline or amorphous fine powder. [Au(α-mtdt)₂] (6) and [Ni(α-mtdt)₂] (7) polycrystalline samples display properties of a metallic system with a room temperature electrical conductivity of 0.32 S/cm and ≈4 S/cm and a thermoelectric power of ≈5 µV/K and ≈32 µV/K, respectively. While [Au(α-mtdt)₂] (6) presented a Pauli-like magnetic susceptibility typical of conducting systems, in [Ni(α-mtdt)₂] (7) large magnetic susceptibilities indicative of high spin states were observed. Both electric transport properties and magnetic properties for gold and nickel [M(α-mtdt)₂] are indicative that these compounds are single component molecular conductors.

Gold and nickel alkyl substituted bis-thiophenedithiolene complexes: anionic and neutral forms

The effect of substituents on the magnetic and transport properties is assessed for Au and Ni alkyl substituted bisthiophenedithiolates.

Gold dithiolene complexes: easy access to 2-alkylthio-thiazoledithiolate complexes

In the presence of MeI or EtI, N-tert-butyl-1,3-thiazoline-2-thione derivatives undergo a transformation to 2-alkylthio-thiazoledithiolate pro-ligands with elimination of the tert-butyl substituent. The corresponding Au(III) dithiolene complexes [Au(RS-tzdt)2](-) (R = Me, Et) oxidize readily to the neutral radical species, such as the semi-conducting [Au(EtS-tzdt)2]˙, which organizes into dimers in the solid state.

TTFs nonsymmetrically fused with alkylthiophenic moieties

Two new dithiolene ligand precursors, containing fused TTF and alkyl thiophenic moieties 3,3'-{[2-(5-(tert-butyl)thieno[2,3-d][1,3]dithiol-2-ylidene)-1,3-dithiole-4,5-diyl]bis[sulfanediyl]}dipropanenitrile (α-tbtdt, 1), and 3,3'-{[2-(5-methylthieno[2,3-d][1,3]dithiol-2-ylidene)-1,3-dithiole-4,5-diyl]bis[sulfanediyl]}dipropanenitrile (α-mtdt, 2), were synthesized and characterized. The electrochemical properties of these electronic donors were studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) in dichloromethane. Both compounds show two quasi-reversible oxidation processes, versus Ag/AgCl, typical of TTF donors at E¹_1/2 = 279 V and E²_1/2 = 680 V for 1 and E¹_1/2 = 304 V and E²_1/2 = 716 V in the case of 2. The single-crystal X-ray structure of 1 and of a charge transfer salt of 2, (α-mtdt)[Au(mnt)₂] (3), are reported.
