Dihydrogen Bonding and Proton Transfer from MH and OH Acids to Group 10 Metal Hydrides [(tBuPCP)MH] [tBuPCP = κ3-2,6-(tBu2PCH2)2C6H3; M = Ni, Pd]

Rearrangement of a carboxy-substituted spiro[4.4]nonatriene to annulated fulvenes through a Pd(ii)-mediated 1,5-vinyl shift

A novel synthesis of aryl-substituted, enantioenriched fulvenes from an oxidative Heck cascade and rearrangement of a carboxy-substituted spiro[4.4]nonatriene is disclosed. Mechanistic investigations with density functional theory (DFT) calculations and empirical results support the net transformation occurring through a novel Pd(ii)-mediated 1,5-vinyl shift from a vinyl-palladium intermediate that terminates with protodepalladation. This spiro-to-fused bicycle conversion tolerates a range of electron-rich and deficient arylboronic acids to give a range of mono- and diaryl substituted annulated fulvenes in moderate to good yields and enantiomeric ratios. Overall, this work connects two classes of molecules with a rich history in physical organic chemistry.

The Dichotomy of Mn-H Bond Cleavage and Kinetic Hydricity of Tricarbonyl Manganese Hydride Complexes

Acid-base characteristics (acidity, pKa, and hydricity, ΔG°_H- or k_H-) of metal hydride complexes could be a helpful value for forecasting their activity in various catalytic reactions. Polarity of the M-H bond may change radically at the stage of formation of a non-covalent adduct with an acidic/basic partner. This stage is responsible for subsequent hydrogen ion (hydride or proton) transfer. Here, the reaction of tricarbonyl manganese hydrides mer,trans-[L₂Mn(CO)₃H] (1; L = P(OPh)₃, 2; L = PPh₃) and fac-[(L-L')Mn(CO)₃H] (3, L-L' = Ph₂PCH₂PPh₂ (dppm); 4, L-L' = Ph₂PCH₂-NHC) with organic bases and Lewis acid (B(C₆F₅)₃) was explored by spectroscopic (IR, NMR) methods to find the conditions for the Mn-H bond repolarization. Complex 1, bearing phosphite ligands, features acidic properties (pKa 21.3) but can serve also as a hydride donor (ΔG^≠_298K = 19.8 kcal/mol). Complex 3 with pronounced hydride character can be deprotonated with KHMDS at the CH₂-bridge position in THF and at the Mn-H position in MeCN. The kinetic hydricity of manganese complexes 1-4 increases in the order mer,trans-[(P(OPh)₃)₂Mn(CO)₃H] (1) < mer,trans-[(PPh₃)₂Mn(CO)₃H] (2) ≈ fac-[(dppm)Mn(CO)₃H] (3) < fac-[(Ph₂PCH₂NHC)Mn(CO)₃H] (4), corresponding to the gain of the phosphorus ligand electron-donor properties.

Detection and Structural Investigation of Elusive Palladium Hydride Intermediates Formed from Simple Metal Salts

The Mizoroki-Heck reaction is one of the most known and best studied catalytic transformations and has provided an outstanding driving force for the development of catalysis and synthetic applications. Three out of four classical Mizoroki-Heck catalytic cycle intermediates contain Pd-C bonds and are well known and studied in detail. However, a simple palladium hydride (which is formed after the product-releasing β-H-elimination step) is a kind of elusive intermediate in the Mizoroki-Heck reaction. In the present study, we performed a combined theoretical and mass spectrometry (MS) study of palladium hydride complexes [PdX₂H]^- (X = Cl, Br, and I), which are reactive intermediates in the Mizoroki-Heck reaction. Static and molecular dynamic calculations revealed that these species have a T-shaped structure with a trans-arrangement of halogen atoms. Other isomers of [PdX₂H]^- are unstable and easily rearrange into the T-shaped form or decompose. These palladium hydride intermediates were detected by MS in precatalyst activation using NaBH₄, Et₃N, and a solvent molecule as reducing agents. Online MS monitoring allowed the detection of [PdX₂H]^- species in the course of the Mizoroki-Heck reaction.

Bifunctional activation of amine-boranes by the W/Pd bimetallic analogs of "frustrated Lewis pairs"

The reaction between basic [(PCP)Pd(H)] (PCP = 2,6-(CH2P(t-C4H9)2)2C6H4) and acidic [LWH(CO)3] (L = Cp (1a), Tp (1b); Cp = η5-cyclopentadienyl, Tp = κ3-hydridotris(pyrazolyl)borate) leads to the formation of bimolecular complexes [LW(CO)2(μ-CO)⋯Pd(PCP)] (4a, 4b), which catalyze amine-borane (Me2NHBH3, t BuNH2BH3) dehydrogenation. The combination of variable-temperature (1H, 31P{1H}, 11B NMR and IR) spectroscopies and computational (ωB97XD/def2-TZVP) studies reveal the formation of an η1-borane complex [(PCP)Pd(Me2NHBH3)]+[LW(CO3)]- (5) in the first step, where a BH bond strongly binds palladium and an amine group is hydrogen-bonded to tungsten. The subsequent intracomplex proton transfer is the rate-determining step, followed by an almost barrierless hydride transfer. Bimetallic species 4 are easily regenerated through hydrogen evolution in the reaction between two hydrides.

Kinetic and Potential Energy Contributions to a Chemical Bond from the Charge and Energy Decomposition Scheme of Extended Transition State Natural Orbitals for Chemical Valence

This work provides novel physical insight into the nature of a chemical bond by exploring qualitative and quantitative relations between the natural orbitals for chemical valence (NOCV)-based deformation density bonding channels Δρ _i ( i = σ, π, δ, etc.) and the corresponding kinetic Δ T_i and potential energy Δ V_i contributions within the charge and energy decomposition scheme ETS-NOCV implemented in the Kohn-Sham-based Amsterdam Density Functional (ADF) package. It is determined that interfragment dative and covalent-type electron charge reorganizations upon formation of a series of strong and weak bonds employing main-group elements are due to lowering of the negative kinetic energy contributions, as opposed to the intrafragment polarizations (e.g., hyperconjugations in ethane), which are, in contrary, driven by the potential energy (electrostatic) component. Complementary, formation of π-contributions in N₂ is accompanied by lowering of both kinetic and potential energy constituents. Remarkably, well-known globally stabilizing back-donation (M → ligand, where M is a transition metal) and donation (ligand → M) processes, ubiquitous in organometallic species, have been discovered for the first time to be driven by the opposite Δ T_i/Δ V_i mechanisms, namely, the former contribution is associated with the negative kinetic term (which outweighs the positive potential energy), whereas the latter charge delocalization into electrophilic transition metals leads to an attractive electrostatic stabilization (and positive kinetic energy).

Synthesis, structural properties and reactivity of ruthenocene-based pincer Pd(ii) tetrahydroborate

Non-covalent interactions determine the structure, crystal packing and reactivity of isolated ruthenocene-based pincer Pd(ii) complexes. Bifurcate dihydrogen-bonded complexes are active intermediates of tetrahydroborate alcoholysis.

Evidence of Intermediate Hydrogen States in the Formation of a Complex Hydride

A complex hydride (LaMg₂NiH₇) composed of La³⁺, two Mg²⁺, [NiH₄]^4- with a covalently bonded hydrogen, and three H^- was formed from an intermetallic LaMg₂Ni via an intermediate phase (LaMg₂NiH_4.6) composed of La, Mg, NiH₂, NiH₃ units, and H atoms at tetrahedral sites. The NiH₂ and NiH₃ units in LaMg₂NiH_4.6 were reported as precursors for [NiH₄]^4- in LaMg₂NiH₇ [ Miwa et al. J. Phys. Chem. C 2016 , 120 , 5926 - 5931 ]. To further understand the hydrogen states in the precursors (the NiH₂ and NiH₃ units) and H atoms at the tetrahedral sites in the intermediate phase, LaMg₂NiH_4.6, we observed the hydrogen vibrations in LaMg₂NiH_4.6 and LaMg₂NiH₇ by using inelastic neutron scattering. A comparison of the hydrogen vibrations of the NiH₂ and NiH₃ units with that of [NiH₄]^4- shows that the librational modes of the NiH₂ and NiH₃ units were nonexistent; librational modes are characteristic modes for complex anions, such as [NiH₄]^4-. Furthermore, the hydrogen vibrations for the H atoms in the tetrahedral sites showed a narrower wavenumber range than that for H^- and a wider range than that for typical interstitial hydrogen. The results indicated the presence of intermediate hydrogen states before the formation of [NiH₄]^4- and H^-.

Hydrogen and Dihydrogen Bonds in the Reactions of Metal Hydrides

The dihydrogen bond-an interaction between a transition-metal or main-group hydride (M-H) and a protic hydrogen moiety (H-X)-is arguably the most intriguing type of hydrogen bond. It was discovered in the mid-1990s and has been intensively explored since then. Herein, we collate up-to-date experimental and computational studies of the structural, energetic, and spectroscopic parameters and natures of dihydrogen-bonded complexes of the form M-H···H-X, as such species are now known for a wide variety of hydrido compounds. Being a weak interaction, dihydrogen bonding entails the lengthening of the participating bonds as well as their polarization (repolarization) as a result of electron density redistribution. Thus, the formation of a dihydrogen bond allows for the activation of both the MH and XH bonds in one step, facilitating proton transfer and preparing these bonds for further transformations. The implications of dihydrogen bonding in different stoichiometric and catalytic reactions, such as hydrogen exchange, alcoholysis and aminolysis, hydrogen evolution, hydrogenation, and dehydrogenation, are discussed.
