Stability, Chemical Bonding, and Electron Lone Pair Localization in AsN at High Pressure by Density Functional Theory Calculations

The covalent bonding framework of crystalline single-bonded cubic AsN, recently synthesized under high pressure and high temperature conditions in a laser-heated diamond anvil cell, is here studied by means of density functional theory calculations and compared to single crystal X-ray diffraction data. The precise localization of the nonbonding electron lone pairs and the determination of their distances and orientations are related to the presence of characteristic structural motifs and space regions of the unit cell dominated by repulsive electronic interactions, with the relative orientation of the electron lone pairs playing a key role in minimizing the energy of the structure. We find that the vibrational modes associated with the expression of the lone pairs are strongly localized, an observation that may have implications for the thermal conductivity of the compound. The results indicate the thermodynamic stability of the experimentally observed structure of AsN above ∼17 GPa, provide a detailed insight into the nature of the chemical bonding network underlying the formation of this compound, and open new perspectives to the design and high pressure synthesis of new pnictogen-based advanced materials for potential applications of energetic and technological relevance.

Anisotropic thermo-mechanical response of layered hexagonal boron nitride and black phosphorus: application as a simultaneous pressure and temperature sensor

Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and black phosphorus (bP) are crystalline materials that can be seen as ordered stackings of two-dimensional layers, which lead to outstanding anisotropic physical properties. Knowledge of the thermal equations of state of hBN and bP is of great interest in the field of 2D materials for a better understanding of their anisotropic thermo-mechanical properties and exfoliation mechanism towards the preparation of important single-layer materials like hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets and phosphorene. Despite several theoretical and experimental studies, important uncertainties remain in the determination of the thermoelastic parameters of hBN and bP. Here, we report accurate thermal expansion and compressibility measurements along the individual crystallographic axes, using in situ high-temperature and high-pressure high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction. In particular, we have quantitatively determined the subtle variations of the in-plane and volumetric thermal expansion coefficients and compressibility parameters by subjecting these materials to hydrostatic conditions and by collecting a large number of data points in small pressure and temperature increments. In addition, based on the anisotropic behavior of bP, we propose the use of this material as a sensor for the simultaneous determination of pressure and temperature in the range of 0-5 GPa and 298-1700 K, respectively.

High-pressure and high-temperature synthesis of crystalline Sb3 N5

A chemical reaction between Sb and N2 was induced under high-pressure (32-35 GPa) and high-temperature (1600-2200 K) conditions, generated by a laser heated diamond anvil cell. The reaction product was identified by single crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction at 35 GPa and room temperature as crystalline antimony nitride with Sb3 N5 stoichiometry and structure belonging to orthorhombic space group Cmc21 . Only Sb-N bonds are present in the covalent bonding framework, with two types of Sb atoms respectively forming SbN6 distorted octahedra and trigonal prisms and three types of N atoms forming NSb4 distorted tetrahedra and NSb3 trigonal pyramids. Taking into account two longer Sb-N distances, the SbN6 trigonal prisms can be depicted as SbN8 square antiprisms and the NSb3 trigonal pyramids as NSb4 distorted tetrahedra. The Sb3 N5 structure can be described as an ordered stacking in the bc plane of bi- layers of SbN6 octahedra alternated to monolayers of SbN6 trigonal prisms (SbN8 square antiprisms). The discovery of Sb3 N5 finally represents the long sought-after experimental evidence for Sb to form a crystalline nitride, providing new insights about fundamental aspects of pnictogens chemistry and opening new perspectives for the high-pressure chemistry of pnictogen nitrides and the synthesis of an entire class of new materials.

Base- and Additive-Free Carbon Dioxide Hydroboration to Methoxyboranes Catalyzed by Non-Pincer-Type Mn(I) Complexes

Well-defined, bench stable Mn(I) non-pincer-type complexes were tested as earth-abundant transition metal catalysts for the selective reduction of CO₂ to boryl-protected MeOH in the presence of pinacolborane (HBpin). Essentially, quantitative yields were obtained under mild reaction conditions (1 bar CO₂, 60 °C), without the need of any base or additives, in the presence of the alkylcarbonyl Mn(I) bis(phosphine) complexes fac-[Mn(CH₂CH₂CH₃)(dippe)(CO)₃] [Mn1, dippe = 1,2-bis(diisopropylphosphino)ethane] and [Mn(dippe)(CO)₂{(μ-H)₂(Bpin)}] (Mn4), that is obtained by reaction of the bench-stable precatalyst Mn1 with HBpin via elimination of butanal. Preliminary mechanistic details were obtained by a combination of NMR experiments and monitoring of the catalytic reactions.

Unraveling the Role of Nickel Nanoparticles Functionalization in the Electronic Properties and Structural Features of 2D Black Phosphorene Exposed to Ambient Conditions

Layered black phosphorus (BP) is endowed with peculiar chemico-physical properties that make it a highly promising candidate in the field of electronics. Nevertheless, as other 2D materials with atomic scale thickness, it suffers from easy degradation under ambient conditions. Herein, it is shown that the functionalization of BP with preformed and in situ grown Ni NPs, affects the electronic properties of the material. In particular, Ni functionalization performed in situ leads to a narrowing of the average BP band gap from 1.15 to 0.95 eV and to a marked shift in the conduction band maximum from -0.33 V to -0.07 V, which, in turn, improve the ambient stability. Structural studies carried out by XAS can well distinguish the two nanohybrids and reveal that once Ni NPs are grown on BP nanosheets, a Ni-P coordinative bond is formed, featuring a short Ni-P distance of 2.27 Å, which is not observed when preformed Ni NPs are immobilized on BP. Comparing the XANES and EXAFS spectra of fresh and aged samples of both nanohybrids, suggests that the interaction between Ni and P atoms results in a stabilization effect exerted via a dual electronic and redox mechanism, that infers a much superior ambient stability to BP, even if the surface functionalization is far to achieve a full coverage.

High-Pressure and High-Temperature Chemistry of Phosphorus and Nitrogen: Synthesis and Characterization of α- and γ-P3N5

The direct chemical reactivity between phosphorus and nitrogen was induced under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions (9.1 GPa and 2000–2500 K), generated by a laser-heated diamond anvil cell and studied by synchrotron X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. α-P₃N₅ and γ-P₃N₅ were identified as reaction products. The structural parameters and vibrational frequencies of γ-P₃N₅ were characterized as a function of pressure during room-temperature compression and decompression to ambient conditions, determining the equation of state of the material up to 32.6 GPa and providing insight about the lattice dynamics of the unit cell during compression, which essentially proceeds through the rotation of the PN₅ square pyramids and the distortion of the PN₄ tetrahedra. Although the identification of α-P₃N₅ demonstrates for the first time the direct synthesis of this compound from the elements, its detection in the outer regions of the laser-heated area suggests α-P₃N₅ as an intermediate step in the progressive nitridation of phosphorus toward the formation of γ-P₃N₅ with increasing coordination number of P by N from 4 to 5. No evidence of a higher-pressure phase transition was observed, excluding the existence of predicted structures containing octahedrally hexacoordinated P atoms in the investigated pressure range.

The α- and γ-P₃N₅ phosphorus nitride polymorphs have been obtained by direct chemical reactivity between phosphorus and molecular nitrogen under high pressure (9.1 GPa) and high-temperature (2000−2500 K) conditions, generated using a laser heated diamond anvil cell. Insights on the reaction mechanism, involving the preliminary formation of α-P₃N₅, and on the structural properties of γ-P₃N₅ have been evinced by synchrotron X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and DFT calculations.

Evidence of Josephson Coupling in a Few-Layer Black Phosphorus Planar Josephson Junction

Setting up strong Josephson coupling in van der Waals materials in close proximity to superconductors offers several opportunities both to inspect fundamental physics and to develop cryogenic quantum technologies. Here we show evidence of Josephson coupling in a planar few-layer black phosphorus junction. The planar geometry allows us to probe the junction behavior by means of external gates, at different carrier concentrations. Clear signatures of Josephson coupling are demonstrated by measuring supercurrent flow through the junction at milli-Kelvin temperatures. Manifestation of a Fraunhofer pattern with a transverse magnetic field is also reported, confirming the Josephson coupling. These findings represent evidence of proximity Josephson coupling in a planar junction based on a van der Waals material beyond graphene and will expedite further studies, exploiting the peculiar properties of exfoliated black phosphorus thin flakes.

Single-Bonded Cubic AsN from High-Pressure and High-Temperature Chemical Reactivity of Arsenic and Nitrogen

Chemical reactivity between As and N₂, leading to the synthesis of crystalline arsenic nitride, is here reported under high pressure and high temperature conditions generated by laser heating in a diamond anvil cell. Single‐crystal synchrotron X‐ray diffraction at different pressures between 30 and 40 GPa provides evidence for the synthesis of a covalent compound of AsN stoichiometry, crystallizing in a cubic P2₁3 space group, in which each of the two elements is single‐bonded to three atoms of the other and hosts an electron lone pair, in a tetrahedral anisotropic coordination. The identification of characteristic structural motifs highlights the key role played by the directional repulsive interactions between non‐bonding electron lone pairs in the formation of the AsN structure. Additional data indicate the existence of AsN at room temperature from 9.8 up to 50 GPa. Implications concern fundamental aspects of pnictogens chemistry and the synthesis of innovative advanced materials.

Air Stable Nickel-Decorated Black Phosphorus and Its Room-Temperature Chemiresistive Gas Sensor Capabilities

In the rapidly emerging field of layered two-dimensional functional materials, black phosphorus, the P-counterpart of graphene, is a potential candidate for various applications, e.g., nanoscale optoelectronics, rechargeable ion batteries, electrocatalysts, thermoelectrics, solar cells, and sensors. Black phosphorus has shown superior chemical sensing performance; in particular, it is selective for the detection of NO2, an environmental toxic gas, for which black phosphorus has highlighted high sensitivity at a ppb level. In this work, by applying a multiscale characterization approach, we demonstrated a stability and functionality improvement of nickel-decorated black phosphorus films for gas sensing prepared by a simple, reproducible, and affordable deposition technique. Furthermore, we studied the electrical behavior of these films once implemented as functional layers in gas sensors by exposing them to different gaseous compounds and under different relative humidity conditions. Finally, the influence on sensing performance of nickel nanoparticle dimensions and concentration correlated to the decoration technique and film thickness was investigated.

Easy and fast in situ functionalization of exfoliated 2D black phosphorus with gold nanoparticles

Heterostructures of single- and few-layer black phosphorus (2D bP) functionalized with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) have been recently reported in the literature, exploiting their intriguing properties and biocompatibility for catalytic, therapeutical and diagnostic applications. However, a deeper insight on the structural and electronic properties at the interface of the 2D bP/Au NP heterostructure is still lacking. In this work, 2D bP is functionalized with Au nanoparticles (NPs) through in situ deposition-precipitation heterogeneous reaction. The smallest realized Au NPs have a diameter around 10 nm as revealed by atomic-force and scanning electron microscopy, and are partially positively charged as revealed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). XPS, UV-vis and Raman spectroscopy, supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, confirmed that while the structural and electronic properties of 2D bP are overall preserved, a soft-pairing between P atoms at the surface of 2D bP and Au atoms at the surface of Au NPs occurs, leading to a partial charge transfer at the 2D bP/Au interface, with a positive charge being localized on the Au atoms directly bonded to 2D bP. DFT calculations also predicted a band gap lowering, by 0.8 eV, for phosphorene functionalized with a tetranuclear Au cluster. Larger effects are expected as the Au cluster nuclearity (and coverage) increases.

The use of virtual tours to stimulate consumers’ buying and visit intentions: an application to the Parmigiano Reggiano cheese

The purpose of this paper is to explore how the use of virtual tours may represent a lever to improve customers’ intention to buy food products and/or visit places where products are manufactured. Emerging virtual reality and augmented reality can allow people to interact with products and places where products are produced even from very distant places, with a positive impact on their purchase intentions. Applying the theory of planned behaviour, this study focuses on the Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, one of the most exported Italian foods. A sample of consumers was surveyed online to explore the role of virtually visiting the food production place on consumers’ intention to physically visit the production place and on their intention to buy the food. The empirical results deriving from a structural equation model developed on 399 completed and valid questionnaires indicate that the opportunity to experience products through virtual tours positively influences consumer behaviours. Young males show the highest intention to physically visit the food production place and to buy the cheese. Findings provide new insights for the emerging literature on the use of virtual reality to experience products through virtual interaction and the impact that interactive technologies have on consumer purchase intentions. Local areas can use virtual tours to improve food tourism and stimulate food product sales. To our knowledge, this paper represents one of the first empirical endeavours aimed at exploring the impact of virtual tours on consumers’ buying and visiting intentions when a food product and a dairy are concerned.

Interlayer Coordination of Pd-Pd Units in Exfoliated Black Phosphorus

The chemical functionalization of 2D exfoliated black phosphorus (2D BP) continues to attract great interest, although a satisfactory structural characterization of the functionalized material has seldom been achieved. Herein, we provide the first complete structural characterization of 2D BP functionalized with rare discrete Pd₂ units, obtained through a mild decomposition of the organometallic dimeric precursor [Pd(η³-C₃H₅)Cl]₂. A multitechnique approach, including HAADF-STEM, solid-state NMR, XPS, and XAS, was used to study in detail the morphology of the palladated nanosheets (Pd₂/BP) and to unravel the coordination of Pd₂ units to phosphorus atoms of 2D BP. In particular, XAS, backed up by DFT modeling, revealed the existence of unprecedented interlayer Pd–Pd units, sandwiched between stacked BP layers. The preliminary application of Pd₂/BP as a catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic medium highlighted an activity increase due to the presence of Pd₂ units.

Carbon Dioxide Hydrogenation to Formate Catalyzed by a Bench-Stable, Non-Pincer-Type Mn(I) Alkylcarbonyl Complex

The catalytic reduction of carbon dioxide is a process of growing interest for the use of this simple and abundant molecule as a renewable building block in C1-chemical synthesis and for hydrogen storage. The well-defined, bench-stable alkylcarbonyl Mn(I) bis(phosphine) complex fac-[Mn(CH₂CH₂CH₃)(dippe)(CO)₃] [dippe = 1,2-bis(diisopropylphosphino)ethane] was tested as an efficient and selective non-precious-metal precatalyst for the hydrogenation of CO₂ to formate under mild conditions (75 bar total pressure, 80 °C), in the presence of a Lewis acid co-catalyst (LiOTf) and a base (DBU). Mechanistic insight into the catalytic reaction is provided by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Large-Area Oxidized Phosphorene Nanoflakes Obtained by Electrospray for Energy-Harvesting Applications

Bidimensional (2D) materials are nowadays being developed as outstanding candidates for electronic and optoelectronic components and devices. Targeted applications include sensing, energy conversion, and storage. Phosphorene is one of the most promising systems in this context, but its high reactivity under atmospheric conditions and its small-area/lab-scale deposition techniques have hampered the introduction of this material in real-world applications so far. However, phosphorene oxides in the form of low-dimensional structures (2D PO _x ) should behave as an electroresponsive material according to recent theoretical studies. In the present work, we introduce electrospraying for the deposition of stoichiometric and large-area 2D PO _x nanoflakes starting from a suspension of liquid-phase-exfoliated phosphorene. We obtained 2D PO _x nanostructures with a mean surface area two orders of magnitude larger than phosphorene structures obtained with standard mechanical and liquid exfoliation techniques. X-ray spectroscopy and high-resolution electron microscopy confirmed the P₂O₅-like crystallographic structure of the electrosprayed flakes. Finally, we experimentally demonstrated for the first time the electromechanical responsivity of the 2D P₂O₅ nanoflakes, through piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). This work sheds light on the possible implementation of phosphorus oxide-based 2D nanomaterials in the value chain of fabrication and engineering of devices, which might be easily scaled up for energy-harvesting/conversion applications.

2D exfoliated black phosphorus influences healthy and cancer prostate cell behaviors

Nowadays, prostate cancer is the most widespread tumour in worldwide male population. Actually, brachytherapy is the most advanced radiotherapy strategy for the local treatment of prostate cancer. It consists in the placing of radioactive sources closed to the tumour side thus killing cancer cells. However, brachytherapy causes the same adverse effects of external-beam radiotherapy. Therefore, alternative treatment approaches are required for enhancing radiotherapy effectiveness and reducing toxic symptoms. Nanostructured exfoliated black phosphorus (2D BP) may represent a strategic tool for local cancer therapy because of its capability to induce singlet oxygen production and act as photosensitizer. Hence, we investigated 2D BP in vitro effect on healthy and cancer prostate cell behavior. 2D BP was obtained through liquid exfoliation. 2D BP effect on healthy and cancer prostate cell behaviors was analyzed by investigating cell viability, oxidative stress and inflammatory marker expression. 2D BP inhibited prostate cancer cell survival, meanwhile promoted healthy prostate cell survival in vitro by modulating oxidative stress and immune response with and without near-infrared light (NIR)-irradiation. Nanostructured 2D BP is able to inhibit in vitro prostate cancer cells survival and preserve healthy prostate cell vitality through the control of oxidative stress and immune response, respectively.

Bifunctional activation of amine-boranes by the W/Pd bimetallic analogs of "frustrated Lewis pairs"

The reaction between basic [(PCP)Pd(H)] (PCP = 2,6-(CH2P(t-C4H9)2)2C6H4) and acidic [LWH(CO)3] (L = Cp (1a), Tp (1b); Cp = η5-cyclopentadienyl, Tp = κ3-hydridotris(pyrazolyl)borate) leads to the formation of bimolecular complexes [LW(CO)2(μ-CO)⋯Pd(PCP)] (4a, 4b), which catalyze amine-borane (Me2NHBH3, t BuNH2BH3) dehydrogenation. The combination of variable-temperature (1H, 31P{1H}, 11B NMR and IR) spectroscopies and computational (ωB97XD/def2-TZVP) studies reveal the formation of an η1-borane complex [(PCP)Pd(Me2NHBH3)]+[LW(CO3)]- (5) in the first step, where a BH bond strongly binds palladium and an amine group is hydrogen-bonded to tungsten. The subsequent intracomplex proton transfer is the rate-determining step, followed by an almost barrierless hydride transfer. Bimetallic species 4 are easily regenerated through hydrogen evolution in the reaction between two hydrides.

Interfacial chemistry and electroactivity of black phosphorus decorated with transition metals

Black phosphorus (BP) exhibits a significant chemical reactivity toward transition metals at room temperature, forming metal–BP nanohybrids that have much higher catalytic activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction with respect to the bare BP.

High pressure synthesis of phosphine from the elements and the discovery of the missing (PH3)2H2 tile

High pressure reactivity of phosphorus and hydrogen is relevant to fundamental chemistry, energy conversion and storage, and materials science. Here we report the synthesis of (PH3)2H2, a crystalline van der Waals (vdW) compound (I4cm) made of PH3 and H2 molecules, in a Diamond Anvil Cell by direct catalyst-free high pressure (1.2 GPa) and high temperature (T ≲ 1000 K) chemical reaction of black phosphorus and liquid hydrogen, followed by room T compression above 3.5 GPa. Group 15 elements were previously not known to form H2-containing vdW compounds of their molecular hydrides. The observation of (PH3)2H2, identified by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and vibrational spectroscopy (FTIR, Raman), therefore represents the discovery of a previously missing tile, specifically corresponding to P for pnictogens, in the ability of non-metallic elements to form such compounds. Significant chemical implications encompass reactivity of the elements under extreme conditions, with the observation of the P analogue of the Haber-Bosch reaction for N, fundamental bond theory, and predicted high pressure superconductivity in P-H systems.

Ohmic contact engineering in few-layer black phosphorus: approaching the quantum limit

Achieving good quality Ohmic contacts to van der Waals materials is a challenge, since at the interface between metal and van der Waals material different conditions can occur, ranging from the presence of a large energy barrier between the two materials to the metallization of the layered material below the contacts. In black phosphorus (bP), a further challenge is its high reactivity to oxygen and moisture, since the presence of uncontrolled oxidation can substantially change the behavior of the contacts. Here we study three of the most commonly used metals as contacts to bP, chromium, titanium, and nickel, and investigate their influence on contact resistance against the variability between different flakes and different samples. We investigate the gate dependence of the current-voltage characteristics of field-effect transistors fabricated with these metals on bP, observing good linearity in the accumulation regime for all metals investigated. Using the transfer length method, from an analysis of ten devices, both at room temperature and at low temperature, Ni results to provide the lowest contact resistance to bP and minimum scattering between different devices. Moreover, we observe that our best devices approach the quantum limit for contact resistance both for Ni and for Ti contacts.

Enhanced ambient stability of exfoliated black phosphorus by passivation with nickel nanoparticles

Since its discovery, the environmental instability of exfoliated black phosphorus (2D bP) has emerged as a challenge that hampers its wide application in chemistry, physics, and materials science. Many studies have been carried out to overcome this drawback. Here we show a relevant enhancement of ambient stability in few-layer bP decorated with nickel nanoparticles as compared to pristine bP. In detail, the behavior of the Ni-functionalized material exposed to ambient conditions in the dark is accurately studied by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Raman Spectroscopy, and high resolution x-ray Photoemission and Absorption Spectroscopy. These techniques provide a morphological and quantitative insight of the oxidation process taking place at the surface of the bP flakes. In the presence of Ni nanoparticles (NPs), the decay time of 2D bP to phosphorus oxides is more than three time slower compared to pristine bP, demonstrating an improved structural stability within 20 months of observation.

Anisotropic thermal expansion of black phosphorus from nanoscale dynamics of phosphorene layers

Black phosphorus (bP) is a crystalline material which can be seen as an ordered stacking of two-dimensional layers, referred to as phosphorene. The knowledge of the linear thermal expansion coefficients (LTECs) of bP is of great interest in the field of 2D materials for a better understanding of the anisotropic thermal properties and exfoliation mechanism of this material. Despite several theoretical and experimental studies, important uncertainties remain in the determination of the LTECs of bP. Here, we report accurate thermal expansion measurements along the three crystallographic axes using in situ high temperature X-ray diffraction. From the progressive reduction of the diffracted intensities with temperature, we monitored the loss of the crystal structure of bP across the investigated temperature range, evidencing two thermal expansion regimes at temperature below and above 706 K. Below 706 K, a strong out-of-plane anisotropy can be observed, while at temperatures above 706 K a larger thermal expansion occurs along the a crystallographic direction. From our data and by taking advantage of ab initio optimization, we propose a detailed anisotropic thermal expansion mechanism of bP, which leads to an inter- and intra-layer destabilization. An interpretation of it, based on the high T perturbation of the stabilizing sp orbital mixing effect, is provided, consistent with the high pressure data.

On the comparison of oxygen and sulfur transfer reactivities in phosphine and phosphorene: the case of R3Sb(X) carriers (X = O or S)

Functionalization is one of the most powerful tools in materials science for the development of new and innovative materials with tailored properties purposefully designed to enhance the overall stability of the system. This is particularly true for exfoliated black phosphorus, which suffers from easy decomposition by air and moisture, hampering its highly desirable applications, especially in electronics. The present work suggests an innovative approach to the functionalization process of this 2D-material based on the selective introduction of chalcogen atoms on the material surface through a reaction with suitable molecular precursors such as stibine chalcogenides (R3Sb(X), X = O or S; R = organyl group). These molecules may readily act as chalcogen-transfer agents and, upon releasing the chalcogen atom atop the bP surface, leave stable stibines (R3Sb) as byproducts, which may be easily removed from the functionalized bP surface. The work provides an overview of all the possible structural, electronic and energy aspects associated with the chalcogen-atom transfer from the stibine to phosphorus based compounds, exemplified by trialkyl phosphines and single layer exfoliated black phosphorus, i.e. phosphorene, Pn. In both cases the oxygen transfer is more exergonic than the sulfur transfer, with the associated free energy barrier for the phosphine process being higher. Although the sulfur transfer for the Pn is found to be endergonic (ca. +3.6 kcal mol-1), the process may surely occur at high temperature. The evolution of the band structure upon the chalcogen transfer has been depicted in detail.

Epitaxial multilayers of alkanes on two-dimensional black phosphorus as passivating and electrically insulating nanostructures

Mechanically exfoliated two-dimensional (2D) black phosphorus (bP) is epitaxially terminated by monolayers and multilayers of tetracosane, a linear alkane, to form a weakly interacting van der Waals heterostructure. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and computational modelling show that epitaxial domains of alkane chains are ordered in parallel lamellae along the principal crystalline axis of bP, and this order is extended over a few layers above the interface. Epitaxial alkane multilayers delay the oxidation of 2D bP in air by 18 hours, in comparison to 1 hour for bare 2D bP, and act as an electrical insulator, as demonstrated using electrostatic force microscopy. The presented heterostructure is a technologically relevant insulator-semiconductor model system that can open the way to the use of 2D bP in micro- and nanoelectronic, optoelectronic and photonic applications.

Phosphorene and Black Phosphorus: The 31P NMR View

This work aims at characterizing for the first time the ³¹P spin interactions determining the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) properties of solid black phosphorus (bP) and of its few-layer exfoliated form (fl-bP). Indeed, the knowledge of these properties is still very poor, despite the great interest received by this layered phosphorus allotrope and its exfoliated 2D form, phosphorene. By combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations and solid-state NMR experiments on suspensions of fl-bP nanoflakes and on solid bP, it has been possible to characterize the ³¹P homonuclear dipolar and chemical shift interactions, identifying the network of ³¹P nuclei more strongly dipolarly coupled and highlighting two kinds of magnetically nonequivalent ³¹P nuclei. These results add an important missing piece of information to the fundamental chemico-physical knowledge of bP and support future extensive applications of NMR spectroscopy to the characterization of phosphorene-based materials.

Black Phosphorus/Palladium Nanohybrid: Unraveling the Nature of P-Pd Interaction and Application in Selective Hydrogenation

The burgeoning interest in two-dimensional (2D) black phosphorus (bP) contributes to the expansion of its applications in numerous fields. In the present study, 2D bP is used as a support for homogeneously dispersed palladium nanoparticles directly grown on it by a wet chemical process. Electron energy loss spectroscopy-scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis evidences a strong interaction between palladium and P atoms of the bP nanosheets. A quantitative evaluation of this interaction comes from the X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements that show a very short Pd-P distance of 2.26 Å, proving for the first time the existence of an unprecedented Pd-P coordination bond of a covalent nature. Additionally, the average Pd-P coordination number of about 1.7 reveals that bP acts as a polydentate phosphine ligand toward the surface of the Pd atoms of the nanoparticles, thus preventing their agglomeration and inferring with structural stability. These unique properties result in a superior performance in the catalytic hydrogenation of chloronitroarenes to chloroanilines, where a higher chemoselectivity in comparison to other heterogeneous catalyst based on palladium has been observed.

Noncovalent Functionalization of 2D Black Phosphorus with Fluorescent Boronic Derivatives of Pyrene for Probing and Modulating the Interaction with Molecular Oxygen

We studied the chemical-physical nature of interactions involved in the formation of adducts of two-dimensional black phosphorus (2D BP) with organoboron derivatives of a conjugated fluorescent molecule (pyrene). Time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy showed a stabilization effect of 2D BP on all derivatives, in particular for the adducts endowed with the boronic functionalities. Also, a stronger modulation of the fluorescence decay with oxygen was registered for one of the adducts compared to the corresponding organoboron derivative alone. Nuclear magnetic resonance experiments in suspension and density functional theory simulations confirmed that only noncovalent interactions were involved in the formation of the adducts. The energetic gain in their formation arises from the interaction of P atoms with both C atoms of the pyrene core and the B atom of the boronic functionalities, with a stronger contribution from the ester with respect to the acid one. The interaction results in the lowering of the band gap of 2D BP by around 0.10 eV. Furthermore, we demonstrated through Raman spectroscopy an increased stability toward oxidation in air of 2D BP in the adducts in the solid state (more than 6 months). The modification of the electronic structure at the interface between 2D BP and a conjugated organic molecule through noncovalent stabilizing interactions mediated by the B atom is particularly appealing in view of creating heterojunctions for optoelectronic, photonic, and chemical sensing applications.

A Perspective on Recent Advances in Phosphorene Functionalization and Its Applications in Devices

Phosphorene, the 2D material derived from black phosphorus, has recently attracted a lot of interest for its properties, suitable for applications in materials science. The physical features and the prominent chemical reactivity on its surface render this nanolayered substrate particularly promising for electrical and optoelectronic applications. In addition, being a new potential ligand for metals, it opens the way for a new role of the inorganic chemistry in the 2D world, with special reference to the field of catalysis. The aim of this review is to summarize the state of the art in this subject and to present our most recent results in the preparation, functionalization, and use of phosphorene and its decorated derivatives. We discuss several key points, which are currently under investigation: the synthesis, the characterization by theoretical calculations, the high pressure behavior of black phosphorus, as well as its decoration with nanoparticles and encapsulation in polymers. Finally, device fabrication and electrical transport measurements are overviewed on the basis of recent literature and the new results collected in our laboratories.

Ruthenium mediated halogenation of white phosphorus: synthesis and reactivity of the unprecedented P4Cl2 moiety

The transition metal mediated functionalization of P4 is an approach to develop a more sustainable production of organophosphorus compounds. In this paper a ruthenium complex is presented, in which the P4 unit can be selectively converted into new P4R2 molecules in a two-step synthesis. The unsaturated 16 electron species [RuX(Cp*)(PCy3)] (Cp* = C5Me5, X = Cl, Br) reacts with a half equivalent of P4 affording a bimetallic complex bearing a planar P4X2 moiety as a ligand. The latter eliminates chloride anions under reduction with magnesium. In this process the butadiene-like P4Cl2 ligand is converted into two weakly bound P2 units which bridge the ruthenium centers. In the presence of n-BuLi, the P4Cl2 unit can be selectively alkylated, yielding the planar organophosphorus ligand P4nBu2. A detailed analysis of the electronic properties and solid state structures of the compounds combined with DFT calculations and AIM analyses demonstrate that the P4 unit in all complexes acts as an electronically highly flexible, non-innocent ligand.

Exfoliated Black Phosphorus Promotes in Vitro Bone Regeneration and Suppresses Osteosarcoma Progression through Cancer-Related Inflammation Inhibition

Nowadays chemotherapy is the main treatment for osteosarcoma disease, even if limited by the lack of selectivity between healthy and cancer cells during the inhibition of cell division. Herein, we propose the use of few-layer two-dimensional black phosphorous (2D bP) as an alternative tool for osteosarcoma treatment and report how 2D bP can stimulate newly forming bone tissue generation after osteosarcoma resection. In our study, we have developed an in vitro model to evaluate the efficacy of 2D bP material with and without near-infrared light irradiation treatment, and we have demonstrated that the presence of 2D bP without treatment inhibits the metabolic activity of osteosarcoma cells (SAOS-2) while inducing both the proliferation and the osteogenic differentiation of human preosteoblast cells (HOb) and mesenchymal stem cells. Furthermore, we also propose an in vitro coculture model (SAOS-2 and HOb cell lines) in order to study the effect of 2D bP on inflammatory response related to cancer. On this coculture model, 2D bP may increase anti-inflammatory cytokine generation (i.e., interleukin-10) and inhibit proinflammatory mediators synthesis (i.e., interleukin-6), thus suggesting the opportunity to prevent cancer-related inflammation. Finally, we have demonstrated that 2D bP represents a promising candidate for future regenerative medicine and anticancer applications.

Modelling strategies for the covalent functionalization of 2D phosphorene

This paper is a comparative outline of the potential acid-base adducts formed by an unsaturated main group or transition metal species and P atoms of phosphorene (Pn), which derives from black phosphorus exfoliation. Various possibilities of attaining a realistic covalent functionalization of the 2D material have been examined via DFT solid state calculations. The distribution of neighbor P atoms at one side of the sheet and the reciprocal directionalities of their lone pairs must be clearly understood to foreshadow the best possible acceptor reactants. Amongst the latter, the main group BH3 or I2 species have been examined for their intrinsic acidity, which favors the periodic mono-hapto anchoring at Pn atoms. The corresponding adducts are systematically compared with other molecular P donors from a phosphine to white phosphorus, P4. Significant variations emerge from the comparison of the band gaps in the adducts and the naked phosphorene with a possible electronic interpretation being offered. Then, the Pn covalent functionalization has been analyzed in relation to unsaturated metal fragments, which, by carrying one, two or three vacant σ hybrids, may interact with a different number of adjacent P atoms. For the modelling, the concept of isolobal analogy is important for predicting the possible sets of external coligands at the metal, which may allow the anchoring at phosphorene with a variety of hapticities. Structural, electronic, spectroscopic and energy parameters underline the most relevant pros and cons of some new products at the 2D framework, which have never been experimentally characterized but appear to be reasonably stable.

The p-sc structure in phosphorus: bringing order to the high pressure phases of group 15 elements

High pressure state-of-the-art synchrotron XRD in black-phosphorus has solved apparent contradictions about the stability of the A7 layered structure in pnictogens, highlighting the importance of the s–p orbital mixing in the formation of the p-sc structure.

Black phosphorus was studied by state-of-the-art synchrotron X-ray diffraction in a Diamond Anvil Cell during room temperature compression in the presence of He, H₂, N₂ and Daphne Oil 7474. The data demonstrate that the existence of the pseudo simple-cubic (p-sc) structure above 10.5 GPa is an intrinsic feature of P independent from the pressure transmitting medium. In the case of He, the pressure evolution of the lattice parameters and unit cell volume of P across the A17, A7 and p-sc structures was obtained and the corresponding EOS derived, providing a deeper insight on the recently reported p-sc structure. The results presented in this letter highlight the key role of the s–p orbital mixing in the formation and stabilization of the p-sc structure up to ∼30 GPa, solving apparent contradictions emerging from previous literature and finally bringing order to the sequence of the high pressure A7 layered structure in group 15 elements.

Hybrid nanocomposites of 2D black phosphorus nanosheets encapsulated in PMMA polymer material: new platforms for advanced device fabrication

Hybrid materials, containing a 2D filler embedded in a polymeric matrix, are an interesting platform for several applications, because of the variety of properties that the filler can impart to the polymer matrix when dispersed at the nanoscale. Moreover, novel properties could arise from the interaction between the two. Mostly the bulk properties of these materials have been studied so far, especially focusing on how the filler changes the polymeric matrix properties. Here we propose a complete change of perspective by using the hybrid nanocomposite material as a platform suitable to engineer the properties of the filler and to exploit its potential in the fabrication of devices. As a proof of concept of the versatility and the potential of the new method, we applied this approach to prepare black phosphorus (bP) nanocomposites through its dispersion in poly (methyl methacrylate). bP is a very interesting 2D material, whose application have so far been limited by its high reactivity to oxygen and water. In this respect, we show that electronic-grade bP flakes, already embedded in a protecting matrix since their exfoliation from the bulk material, are endowed with significantly increased stability and can be further processed into devices without degrading their properties.

Spray-loading: A cryogenic deposition method for diamond anvil cell

An efficient loading technique has been developed for flammable, toxic, or explosive gases which can be condensed at liquid nitrogen temperature and ambient pressure in membrane diamond anvil cells (DACs). This cryogenic technique consists in a deposition of small quantities of the desired gas directly into the sample chamber. The deposition is performed using a capillary that reaches the space between the diamond anvils. The DAC is kept under inert gas overpressure during the whole process, in order to avoid contamination from atmospheric O₂, CO₂, and H₂O. This technique provides significant advantages over standard cryo-loading and gas-loading when the condensation of dangerous samples at liquid nitrogen temperature raises safety concerns because it allows dealing with minimum quantities of condensed gases. The whole procedure is particularly fast and efficient. The "spray-loading" has been successfully used in our laboratory to load several samples including acetylene, ammonia, ethylene, and carbon dioxide/water or red phosphorus/NH₃ mixtures.

Polymer-Based Black Phosphorus (bP) Hybrid Materials by in Situ Radical Polymerization: An Effective Tool To Exfoliate bP and Stabilize bP Nanoflakes

Black phosphorus (bP) has been recently investigated for next generation nanoelectronic multifunctional devices. However, the intrinsic instability of exfoliated bP (the bP nanoflakes) toward both moisture and air has so far overshadowed its practical implementation. In order to contribute to fill this gap, we report here the preparation of new hybrid polymer-based materials where bP nanoflakes (bPn) exhibit a significantly improved stability. The new materials have been prepared by different synthetic paths including: (i) the mixing of conventionally liquid-phase exfoliated bP (in dimethyl sulfoxide, DMSO) with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) solution; (ii) the direct exfoliation of bP in a polymeric solution; (iii) the in situ radical polymerization after exfoliating bP in the liquid monomer (methyl methacrylate, MMA). This last methodology concerns the preparation of stable suspensions of bPn-MMA by sonication-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) of bP in the presence of MMA followed by radical polymerization. The hybrids characteristics have been compared in order to evaluate the bP dispersion and the effectiveness of the bPn interfacial interactions with polymer chains aimed at their long-term environmental stabilization. The passivation of the bPn is particularly effective when the hybrid material is prepared by in situ polymerization. By using this synthetic methodology, the nanoflakes, even if with a gradient of dispersion (size of aggregates), preserve their chemical structure from oxidation (as proved by both Raman and 31P-solid state NMR studies) and are particularly stable to air and UV light exposure. The feasibility of this approach, capable of efficiently exfoliating bP while protecting the bPn, has been then verified by using different vinyl monomers (styrene and N-vinylpyrrolidone), thus obtaining hybrids where the nanoflakes are embedded in polymer matrices with a variety of intriguing thermal, mechanical, and solubility characteristics.

Two pathways of proton transfer reaction to (triphos)Cu(η(1)-BH4) via a dihydrogen bond [triphos = 1,1,1-tris(diphenylphosphinomethyl)ethane]

The interaction of the η(1)-tetrahydroborate copper(i) complex (triphos)Cu(η(1)-BH4) () with proton donors [CF3CH2OH (TFE), (CF3)2CHOH (HFIP), (CF3)3COH (PFTB), PhOH, p-NO2C6H4OH (PNP), p-NO2C6H4N[double bond, length as m-dash]NC6H4OH (PNAP), CF3OH] was a subject of a combined IR spectroscopic and theoretical investigation. Spectral (Δν) and thermodynamic (ΔH) parameters of dihydrogen bond (DHB) formation were determined experimentally. The terminal hydride ligand (characterized by the basicity factor Ej(BH) = 0.87 ± 0.01) is found to be a site of proton transfer which begins with nucleophilic substitution of BH4(-) by the alcohol oxygen atom on the copper center (BH pathway). The activation barrier computed for (CF3)2CHOH in CH2Cl2 - ΔG = 20.6 kcal mol(-1) - is in good agreement with the experimental value (ΔG = 20.0 kcal mol(-1)). An abnormal dependence of the reaction rate on the proton donor strength found experimentally in dichloromethane is explained computationally on the basis of the variation of the structural and energetic details of this process with the proton donor strength. In the second reaction mechanism found (CuH pathway), DHB complexes with the initial ROH coordination to the bridging hydride lead to B-Hbr bond cleavage with BH3 elimination. "Copper assistance" via the CuO interaction is not involved. This mechanism can be evoked to explain the occurrence of proton transfer in coordinating solvents.
