Abstract
C1 coupling reactions over zeolite catalysts are central to sustainable chemical production strategies. However, questions persist regarding the involvement of CO in ketene formation, and the impact of this elusive oxygenate intermediate on reactivity patterns. Using operando photoelectron photoion coincidence spectroscopy (PEPICO), we investigate the role of CO in methyl chloride conversion to hydrocarbons (MCTH), a prospective process for methane valorization with a reaction network akin to methanol to hydrocarbons (MTH) but without oxygenate intermediates. Our findings reveal the transformative role of CO in MCTH at the low pressures, inducing ketene formation in MCTH and boosting olefin production, confirming the Koch carbonylation step in the initial stages of C1 coupling. We uncover pressure-dependent product distributions driven by CO-induced ketene formation, and its subsequent desorption from the zeolite surface, which is enhanced at low pressure. Inspired by the above results, extension of the co-feeding approach to CH3OH as another simple oxygenate showcases the additional potential for improved catalyst stability in MCTH at ambient pressure.

Abstract
Layered black phosphorus (BP) is endowed with peculiar chemico-physical properties that make it a highly promising candidate in the field of electronics. Nevertheless, as other 2D materials with atomic scale thickness, it suffers from easy degradation under ambient conditions. Herein, it is shown that the functionalization of BP with preformed and in situ grown Ni NPs, affects the electronic properties of the material. In particular, Ni functionalization performed in situ leads to a narrowing of the average BP band gap from 1.15 to 0.95 eV and to a marked shift in the conduction band maximum from -0.33 V to -0.07 V, which, in turn, improve the ambient stability. Structural studies carried out by XAS can well distinguish the two nanohybrids and reveal that once Ni NPs are grown on BP nanosheets, a Ni-P coordinative bond is formed, featuring a short Ni-P distance of 2.27 Å, which is not observed when preformed Ni NPs are immobilized on BP. Comparing the XANES and EXAFS spectra of fresh and aged samples of both nanohybrids, suggests that the interaction between Ni and P atoms results in a stabilization effect exerted via a dual electronic and redox mechanism, that infers a much superior ambient stability to BP, even if the surface functionalization is far to achieve a full coverage.

Abstract
In the rapidly emerging field of layered two-dimensional functional materials, black phosphorus, the P-counterpart of graphene, is a potential candidate for various applications, e.g., nanoscale optoelectronics, rechargeable ion batteries, electrocatalysts, thermoelectrics, solar cells, and sensors. Black phosphorus has shown superior chemical sensing performance; in particular, it is selective for the detection of NO2, an environmental toxic gas, for which black phosphorus has highlighted high sensitivity at a ppb level. In this work, by applying a multiscale characterization approach, we demonstrated a stability and functionality improvement of nickel-decorated black phosphorus films for gas sensing prepared by a simple, reproducible, and affordable deposition technique. Furthermore, we studied the electrical behavior of these films once implemented as functional layers in gas sensors by exposing them to different gaseous compounds and under different relative humidity conditions. Finally, the influence on sensing performance of nickel nanoparticle dimensions and concentration correlated to the decoration technique and film thickness was investigated.

The chemical functionalization of
2D exfoliated black phosphorus
(2D BP) continues to attract great interest, although a satisfactory
structural characterization of the functionalized material has seldom
been achieved. Herein, we provide the first complete structural characterization
of 2D BP functionalized with rare discrete Pd2 units, obtained
through a mild decomposition of the organometallic dimeric precursor
[Pd(η3-C3H5)Cl]2. A multitechnique approach, including HAADF-STEM, solid-state NMR,
XPS, and XAS, was used to study in detail the morphology of the palladated
nanosheets (Pd2/BP) and to unravel the coordination of
Pd2 units to phosphorus atoms of 2D BP. In particular,
XAS, backed up by DFT modeling, revealed the existence of unprecedented
interlayer Pd–Pd units, sandwiched between stacked BP layers.
The preliminary application of Pd2/BP as a catalyst for
the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic medium highlighted
an activity increase due to the presence of Pd2 units.

Abstract
In 2015 bladder cancer was the fourth most frequent malignancy and the eighth cause of death for cancer. At diagnosis, about 30% of bladder cancer (BC) patients present a muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) and 5% a metastatic bladder carcinoma (MBC). For fit MBC patients, combination chemotherapy (CC) is the standard of care for first-line treatment. CC includes both the treatment with methotrexate, vinblastine, doxorubicin, and cisplatin (MVAC) either the classical or the dose-dense MVAC regimen, and the doublet therapy with cisplatin and gemcitabine (CG). Median progression free survival (PFS) was 7 months and median overall survival (OS) was 15 months. The present review provides an update on the management of MBC, with focus on target therapies, immune checkpoint inhibition, looking for prognostic and predictive factors.

Abstract
Penile cancer (PC) is a typical tumor of non-industrialized countries. The incidence is 20-30 times higher in Africa and South America, considering the elevated prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases. Histologically, PC includes squamous cell carcinoma (SCPC), the most frequent, and nonsquamous carcinoma (NSCPC). Early diagnosis is the goal, whereas later diagnosis relates to poor functional outcomes and worse prognosis. The 5-year survival rate is 85% for patients with histologically regional negative lymph nodes, compared to 29%-40% for those with histologically regional positive lymph nodes. To date no new drugs are approved, and there are few new data about molecular mechanisms underlying tumorigenesis. The SCPC remains a rare tumor and the current therapeutic algorithm is based principally on retrospective analysis and less on prospective trials. In this review article, biomarkers of prognosis and efficacy of current treatments are summarized with a focus on those that have the potential to affect treatment decision-making in SCPC.

Abstract
This work aims at characterizing for the first time the 31P spin interactions determining the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) properties of solid black phosphorus (bP) and of its few-layer exfoliated form (fl-bP). Indeed, the knowledge of these properties is still very poor, despite the great interest received by this layered phosphorus allotrope and its exfoliated 2D form, phosphorene. By combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations and solid-state NMR experiments on suspensions of fl-bP nanoflakes and on solid bP, it has been possible to characterize the 31P homonuclear dipolar and chemical shift interactions, identifying the network of 31P nuclei more strongly dipolarly coupled and highlighting two kinds of magnetically nonequivalent 31P nuclei. These results add an important missing piece of information to the fundamental chemico-physical knowledge of bP and support future extensive applications of NMR spectroscopy to the characterization of phosphorene-based materials.

Abstract
The burgeoning interest in two-dimensional (2D) black phosphorus (bP) contributes to the expansion of its applications in numerous fields. In the present study, 2D bP is used as a support for homogeneously dispersed palladium nanoparticles directly grown on it by a wet chemical process. Electron energy loss spectroscopy-scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis evidences a strong interaction between palladium and P atoms of the bP nanosheets. A quantitative evaluation of this interaction comes from the X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements that show a very short Pd-P distance of 2.26 Å, proving for the first time the existence of an unprecedented Pd-P coordination bond of a covalent nature. Additionally, the average Pd-P coordination number of about 1.7 reveals that bP acts as a polydentate phosphine ligand toward the surface of the Pd atoms of the nanoparticles, thus preventing their agglomeration and inferring with structural stability. These unique properties result in a superior performance in the catalytic hydrogenation of chloronitroarenes to chloroanilines, where a higher chemoselectivity in comparison to other heterogeneous catalyst based on palladium has been observed.

Abstract
Phosphorene, the 2D material derived from black phosphorus, has recently attracted a lot of interest for its properties, suitable for applications in materials science. The physical features and the prominent chemical reactivity on its surface render this nanolayered substrate particularly promising for electrical and optoelectronic applications. In addition, being a new potential ligand for metals, it opens the way for a new role of the inorganic chemistry in the 2D world, with special reference to the field of catalysis. The aim of this review is to summarize the state of the art in this subject and to present our most recent results in the preparation, functionalization, and use of phosphorene and its decorated derivatives. We discuss several key points, which are currently under investigation: the synthesis, the characterization by theoretical calculations, the high pressure behavior of black phosphorus, as well as its decoration with nanoparticles and encapsulation in polymers. Finally, device fabrication and electrical transport measurements are overviewed on the basis of recent literature and the new results collected in our laboratories.

Abstract
Escherichia coli are a common inhabitant of the gastrointestinal tract of mammals and birds; nevertheless, they may be associated with a variety of severe and invasive infections. Whereas fluoroquinolones (FQ) have been banned in the United States for use in poultry production, the use of these antimicrobials in poultry husbandry is still possible in the European Union, although with some restrictions. The aim of this study was to investigate the FQ resistance of 235 E. coli isolates recovered from chickens and turkeys. Minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined by a microdilution method, whereas mutations in the quinolone resistance-determining regions of the target genes, gyrA and parC, were detected by a PCR-based method. High resistance rates (>60%) were observed for nalidixic acid, flumequine, and difloxacin, whereas resistance to ciprofloxacin, danofloxacin, enrofloxacin, marbofloxacin, and sarafloxacin was less frequently reported (<40%). Sixty-four isolates (27.2%) showed full susceptibility toward the tested FQ, but 57 isolates (24.2%) were resistant to all tested FQ. The remaining 114 E. coli isolates (48.5%) were grouped in 5 different resistance patterns. Isolates resistant only to flumequine or nalidixic acid or both possessed 1 gyrA mutation, whereas isolates with further resistance to enrofloxacin, difloxacin, danofloxacin, and sarafloxacin had in addition 1 or 2 parC substitutions. Two gyrA mutations coupled with 1 substitution in parC were detected in isolates resistant to all tested FQ. The number of mutations and their correlation with the in vitro activity of FQ reflected the currently accepted model, according to which a single gyrA substitution is associated with resistance or decreased susceptibility to older quinolones, whereas further gyrA or parC substitutions are needed for a higher level of resistance.

Abstract
The susceptibility to 23 antimicrobial agents was determined in 114 isolates of Staphylococcus intermedius and eight isolates of Staphylococcus schleiferi of canine origin. Overall, 73% of S. intermedius isolates and 37.5% of S. schleiferi isolates were susceptible to all the 23 antimicrobials tested. The large majority of S. intermedius strains retained susceptibility to antimicrobials currently employed in treatment of pyoderma (cephalosporins, cotrimoxazole and association amoxicillin-clavulanic acid) as well as to those effective against staphylococci (fusidic acid, rifampicin and fluoroquinolones). Resistance in S. intermedius was observed mainly against macrolides, chloramphenicol and lincosamides, while S. schleiferi isolates retained susceptibility to all antimicrobials except three of six fluoroquinolones. Although, our results confirm susceptibility to antimicrobials currently employed in pyoderma treatment, the several different resistance patterns observed for S. intermedius emphasize the importance of antimicrobial susceptibility testing of canine staphylococci to choose the most appropriate treatment of infections and to allow the prudent use of antimicrobial drugs in companion animals.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of 136 canine isolates of Staphylococcus intermedius and 10 canine isolates of S. schleiferi subspecies coagulans to 16 fluoroquinolones (FQs), and to investigate the mechanisms of resistance in the nonsusceptible isolates. Of the 136 of S. intermedius tested 98.5% were susceptible to all 16 FQs whereas only 40% of the 10 isolates of S. schleiferi subspecies coagulans were susceptible. Two isolates of S. intermedius and six isolates of S. schleiferi, were found to be resistant to 13 out of 16 FQs, while they retained their susceptibility to fourth generation FQs such as gatifloxacin, moxifloxacin and trovafloxacin. Sequencing of the quinolone-resistance determining regions of gyrA and grlA genes showed that in S. intermedius, dichotomous resistance to FQs was associated with the occurrence of one alteration in GyrA-84 and one in GrlA-80, while in S. schleiferi the same pattern of resistance was observed in isolates showing these changes only in gyrA. This study is the first to screen FQs of the second, third and fourth generation for antimicrobial resistance in clinical isolates of S. intermedius and S. schleiferi of canine origin, and to describe mutations in gyrA and grlA associated with FQ resistance in these bacterial species.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) prevents in vitro gallbladder (GB) muscle damage caused by acute cholecystitis and reduces risk of biliary pain and complications in gallstone (GS) patients. These effects could be partially explained by the improved GB bile turnover. OBJECTIVES To assess the effect of short-term UDCA treatment on GB motility and bile turnover. METHODS Ultrasonographic (US) assessment of GB volumes was performed in 16 GS patients, in the postprandial phase, for 90 min with a time sampling of 1 min, before and after 30 days of UDCA (10 mg kg(-1) die(-1)) or placebo, randomly assigned. US data were analysed with statistical tools and with computer fluido-dynamic (CFD) software Fluent(TM) to simulate GB bile flow. RESULTS After therapy, fasting volume (FV) increased from 21.6 +/- 9 to 28.2 +/- 12 mL (p < 0.001) while the ejection fraction (EF) remained unchanged (44.5 +/- 17% vs 45.1 +/- 20%; p: ns). Volumes before and after treatment were poorly correlated (0.02 < r < 0.35), unlike those in placebo patients (r > 0.6). The average GB volume was increased in 7 out of 10 patients following UDCA (range 7-67%). CFD analysis supports the finding of improved bile flow after treatment. CONCLUSIONS Unlike results of conventional US parameters of GB motility, CFD analysis shows that UDCA improves GB bile turnover in GS patients.

Abstract
Detailed knowledge of the transport of air and particles in the human lungs is needed for two reasons: the selection of the right dosage of aerosol drugs used in respiratory therapy and the analysis of the maximum allowable concentration for particulate in air. This work is the first step of a more complex study, purpose of which is to provide some predictive relationships in order to evaluate the depth reached by the particles in the lungs as a function of their size using numerical modeling. In this phase we validated our numerical method, comparing the obtained results with those found in the literature. The Computational Fluid Dynamics code FLUENT 6 with the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach was used to simulate particle trajectories. A model of double bifurcation, based on the morphometric studies by Weibel and Hammersley and Olson, was adopted in order to represent the whole central part of the respiratory system with the same geometry, appropriately scaled down. A method to create a realistic velocity profile at the inlet of the domain was developed, in order to obtain data about particle deposition also reliable about the first bifurcation, unlike previous works.

Abstract
Axenfeld-Rieger anomaly (ARA) is an autosomal dominant disorder of the anterior chamber of the eye that includes a prominent and anteriorly displaced Schwalbe line and an iridocorneal synechiae, and is associated with iris hypoplasia, corectopia, and hole formation. Extraocular developmental abnormalities, especially of the teeth, facial bones, and periumbilical skin, have also been reported with ARA, in the context of the so-called Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome (ARS). Genetic heterogeneity exists, as ARA maps to chromosome 6p25, whereas ARS can be linked to both chromosome 4q25 and chromosome 13q14. Here we describe a new family in which ARA is associated with cardiac malformations and sensorineural hearing loss. No abnormalities of the teeth, facial bone, or periumbilical skin, which are considered of paramount importance in the diagnosis of ARS, were observed in our patients. Genetic studies will clarify if these patients represent a unique phenotypic expression of ARS or constitute the clinical presentation of a new genetic syndrome.

Abstract
A number of approximate methods for modeling aggregation of particulate suspensions have been extended to simulate breakup as well and have been tested by comparison with rigorous solutions for conditions representative of most aggregation-fragmentation processes. The simplest methods, based on a geometric discretization with size ratio equal to two, can calculate satisfactorily the average values of the population for particularly well-conditioned situations only and, even in those cases, are not capable of predicting the shape of the particle size distribution. Therefore more complex methods are usually required, capable of using denser size discretization. The characteristics of these models and the guidelines for their choice are discussed in the paper, by considering their accuracy, ability to produce error estimates, ease of implementation and speed. Abstract
We re-examined 21 children with the possible diagnosis of peripheral neurofibromatosis (NF1) based on the presence of café-au-lait (CAL) spots as the single clinical finding. We evaluated whether "typical" or "atypical" appearance of the spots was important for the final diagnosis and whether the co-existence of other non-specific signs (e.g. pectus excavatum) were of any significance for the final diagnosis. In 8/14 (57.1%) cases with "typical" CAL spots, the diagnosis of NF1 was finally established on the basis of other criteria. For the other 6 patients the diagnosis is not yet definitive but highly probable on the basis of the presence of macrocephaly, pectus excavatum and/or MRI findings. Only one patient among five with "atypical" CAL spots possibly has NF1.

Marinesco-Sjögren syndrome (MSS) is a rare inherited disease with neurological and ocular manifestations. The latter include bilateral cataracts and, less frequently, nystagmus and strabismus. The authors report here three cases of MSS syndrome, all with optic atrophy, an additional ocular feature not hitherto described in this syndrome.

Abstract
We have isolated from a genomic library of the pathogenic Neisseriae gonorrhoeae T2 strain, a gene encoding a putative protein of 268 amino acids which exhibited significant similarity to the hisJ and argT gene products of Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli, periplasmic proteins deputed to amino acid transport within the cell. The gene is transcribed as a monocistronic mRNA species of about 960 nucleotides flanked by regulatory elements for initiation and termination of transcription that are efficiently recognized in an E. coli host.

Abstract
Cataracts are often found in association with many systemic disorders. Some are congenital in origin but in other cases they develop in early infancy or later in life. They are found in association with disorders, connective tissue disorders, neurological conditions, chromosomal abnormalities and dermatological disorders. Some of these syndromes have a genetic basis but often it is uncertain whether they are hereditary and often their cause is unknown.

Abstract
Research was conducted in 39 cases of urinary infections caused by Pseudomonas Aeruginosa in patients in various hospital wards. The aim was to assess the onset of such opportunistic infections in the hospital environment as reported earlier by other authors. A comparison was then made between the most commonly used antibacterial drugs used to combat such infections assessing their percentage efficacy on the basis of the germs' resistance to the drug.

Abstract
The form of the kneecap is determined by heredity. It is modified by the various tissue-modeling, functional-mechanical forces acting on it in the course of life. The individual "face" of a patella is the result of these two factors, including any malformations or pathologic changes of the tissue (in particular the cartilage). Numerous measurements were made on patellae of elderly subjects - obtained from autopsies and without any apparent macroscopic changes apart from those which were age-related, such as cartilage color - in order to map the ideal patellar shape, which would appear to be unsusceptible (or less susceptible) to pathologic disturbances.

Abstract
Prolactin level, creatinine, urea nitrogen and plasmatic natrium were evaluated in 26 uremic patients undergoing regular haemodialytic treatment. Prolactin level was found to be over normal range in 60% of the female patients and in 12.5% of the male patients. There was no correlation between prolactin, creatinine, urea nitrogen and natrium levels. No significant variations of the prolactin level were evident after a single haemodialytic treatment.

The data revealed on the same subject by the indirect agglutination test and the immunoenzyme test for IgG and IgM anti-toxoplasma antibodies were compared. The analysis shows that neither the indirect agglutination test nor the antibody count is sufficient for the diagnosis of the disease and that both are more appropriately employed in statistical epidemiological surveys.

Abstract
The Kirby-Bauer technique was employed in an assessment of the in vitro resistance to 8 antibiotics of 166 Enterobacteriaceae strains, isolated during routine diagnostic operations from various biological materials derived from wards, and from hospital out-patients. Their chemoresistance characteristics were also examined. It was found that Proteus strains from in-patients were more resistant to some antibiotics than those from out-patients. E. coli strains from in-patients were more frequently resistant to gentamycin.

Abstract
Two hundred twenty-five consecutive total knee replacements were reviewed radiographically to determine final alignment of the leg and accuracy of component placement. Of the 126 knees that were in varus preoperatively, only one knee was found to be in varus after knee replacement. Eighty-nine percent of the knees were found to be in 7 degrees +/- 5 degrees of valgus postoperation, while 7 degrees were in greater than 12 degrees valgus, 4 percent were in neutral position. Severe instability in the mediolateral plane was noted preoperatively in 62 knees in this series. Correction of more than 15 percent of deformity was necessary in 34 varus knee and 15 valgus knees. However, there has been no failure in the series attributable to instability in the mediolateral plane. Anteroposterior stability is controlled by the prosthesis design.
